The aquifer system is a major source of water supply in the area. About 1.4 billion gallons is withdrawn from its aquifers each day. Increasing withdrawal of ground water has created or intensified several problems such as declining water levels, development of large cones of depression, saltwater intrusion, spreading of ground-water contamination, and land subsidence. The U.S. Geological Survey has begun a comprehensive study that will define the geology, hydrology, and geochemistry of the aquifer system. The effects of future utilization of the aquifer system will be determined and alternative plans for water withdrawal will be evaluated through computer simulation modeling. This report describes the objectives, organization, and work plans of the study, and describes the work to be accomplished in each U.S. Geological Survey District of the study area.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Trenton, NJ","doi":"10.3133/wri8016","usgsCitation":"Meisler, H., 1980, Plan of study for the Northern Atlantic Coastal Plain Regional Aquifer System Analysis: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 80-16, iii; 27 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri8016.","productDescription":"iii; 27 p.","numberOfPages":"32","onlineOnly":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":470,"text":"New Jersey Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":159067,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/wri_80_16.gif"},{"id":261986,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1980/16/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":261987,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1980/16/pdf/wrir80-16.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Delaware;Maryl;New Jersey;North Carolina;Virginia","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -81,33.666666666666664 ], [ -81,41.333333333333336 ], [ -71.66666666666667,41.333333333333336 ], [ -71.66666666666667,33.666666666666664 ], [ -81,33.666666666666664 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adae4b07f02db68564d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Meisler, Harold","contributorId":34103,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Meisler","given":"Harold","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":200227,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

An investigation was conducted to determine the technical feasibility of artificially recharging aquifers through wells and through surface spreading by means of impoundments, pits, and canals. Information gained from a literature search and from preliminary tests was used to design several artificial-recharge experiments. The experiments showed that large quantities of water can be recharged through wells and by surface spreading if conditions are favorable.

In the well experiments, about 0.5 billion gallons of water from an aquifer recharged by the Platte River was transported 3 miles by pipeline and recharged through a well into a Pleistocene sand and gravel aquifer near Aurora where ground-water levels are declining. The recharge rate was about 730 gallons per minute during two tests of 6 and 8 months duration. The rise in ground-water levels due to recharge extended more than a mile from the recharge well in both tests.

The pattern of ground-water-level buildup during the 8-month test was similar to that during the 6-month test. Two-thirds of the way through the test the rate of water-level buildup in the recharge well increased greatly because casing failure allowed a large amount of sediment to enter the well.

Although the chemical quality of the recharge water was markedly different from that of the native aquifer water, no evidence of clogging due to chemical reaction was detected; also, there was no evidence of clogging due to air entrainment or bacterial growth. Evaluation of water-level changes in the recharge well and in observation wells during the 6-month test indicated some clogging of the aquifer in the immediate vicinity of the recharge well due to a small amount (0.04 milligram per liter) of fine sediment in the recharge water. Analysis of water-level buildup in the recharge well during the 6-month test indicated that recharge could have continued at a rate of about 700 gallons per minute for several years before rehabilitation of the recharge well would have been necessary.

In surface-spreading experiments, the maximum sustained infiltration rates from a 24-foot-diameter ring infiltrometer set in loess at the well-recharge site near Aurora were about 0.5 foot per day during a 140day test. The recharge water caused water levels in a perched zone of saturation at depths between 36 and 38 feet to rise 15 feet, to within 21 feet of the surface, indicating that if the test had continued or if the impoundment area had been larger, the water level in the perched zone of saturation might have risen to the surface thereby reducing the infiltration rate.

The maximum sustained infiltration rate from a similar experiment in the Sand Hills near Tryon was 11 feet per day. Perching layers also retarded downward infiltration and caused lateral movement of water in the subsurface at this site.

Infiltration rates from re-use pits near the Aurora site ranged from 0.01 to 1.60 feet per day, indicating that the permeability of the subsurface material is extremely variable and that perching layers probably are absent in some areas.

Flow measurements in an irrigation canal excavated in loess near Farwell indicate an infiltration rate of 0.36 foot per day from a 2.7mile reach.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological By virtue of the physical and chemical processing of the ore and the redistribution of the contained radionuclides at the Earth's surface, these tailings constitute a technologically enhanced source of natural radiation exposure. Sources of potential human radiation exposure from uranium mill tailings include the emanation of radon gas, the transport of particles by wind and water, and the transport of soluble radionuclides, seeping from disposal areas, by ground water. Due to the 77,000 year half-life of thorium-230, the parent of radium-226, the environmental effects associated with radionuclides contained in these railings must be conceived of within the framework of geologic processes operating over geologic time. The magnitude of erosion of cover materials and tailings and the extent of geochemical mobilization of the contained radionuclides to the atmosphere and hydrosphere should be considered in the evaluation of the potential, long-term consequences of all proposed uranium mill tailings management plans.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Dept. of the Interior, Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/cir814","usgsCitation":"Landa, E., 1980, Isolation of uranium mill tailings and their component radionuclides from the biosphere; some earth science perspectives: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 814, iii, 32 p. :ill., map ;26 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir814.","productDescription":"iii, 32 p. :ill., map ;26 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":124670,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1980/0814/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":30808,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1980/0814/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9fe4b07f02db660e2e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Landa, Edward","contributorId":100368,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Landa","given":"Edward","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147523,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The investigation of the Apalachicola River and flood plain is designed to quantify the organic detritus and nutrient yield to the productive, estuarine Apalachicola Bay. The extensive riverine flood plain is subject to seasonal flooding which transports large quantities of accumulated, decaying leaf litter from the flood plain into the river and ultimately into Apalachicola Bay. The Apalachicola River Quality Assessment has four major objectives; (1) Determine the accumulation of organic substances and trace elements in benthic organisms and fine-grained sediments; (2) Define the distribution of the major tree communities on the flood plain; (3) Assess the role of leaf fall and decomposition on nutrient yield; and (4) Identify and quantify major sources and pathways of nutrients to the river. Extensive emphasis is given to investigation approaches and techniques to facilitate technology transfer to similar wetland ecosystems. Aerial photographs taken in 1957 and a sequence of photographs taken at about 2-month intervals since 1976, when analyzed photogrammetrically, provided detailed data on changes in Columbia Glacier's thickness, flow rate, and terminal position. Annual embayments in the glacier 's terminus form during the summer-autumn season in most years; the size of embayments appears to be related to (1) the thickness of the glacier, and (2) the position and nature of subglacial freshwater discharge. Embayments have apparently increased in size in recent years; the largest embayments yet observed formed in 1975, 1976, 1977, and 1978. From April 1, 1977, to April 1, 1978, the total volume of ice calved was about 1.0 cubic kilometer. By January 1979 the glacier front had retreated from Heather Island. Glacier flow varies seasonally and synchronously in the lower 17 kilometers of the glacier; large accelerations occur near the terminus in response to embayment formation. Daily speed within 5 kilometers of the terminus increased from about 1.9 meters per day between 1963 and 1968 to about 2.7 meters per day between 1977 and 1978. In the lowest 15 kilometers, the glacier surface was lowered about 9 meters between 1957 and 1974, and about 13 meters between 1974 and 1978. Columbia Glacier is being reduced in mass due, in part, to recent losses caused by large embayments forming annually. If such reduction continues it will result in a drastic retreat.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ha619","usgsCitation":"Sikonia, W., and Post, A., 1980, Columbia Glacier, Alaska: Recent ice loss and its relationship to seasonal terminal embayments, thinning, and glacial flow: U.S. Geological Survey Hydrologic Atlas 619, 3 Plates: 33.50 × 41.18 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ha619.","productDescription":"3 Plates: 33.50 × 41.18 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":394726,"rank":5,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_16015.htm"},{"id":89230,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ha/619/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":89229,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ha/619/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":89228,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ha/619/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":186284,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"}],"scale":"100000","country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Columbia Glacier","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -147.30056762695312,\n              60.99974987461457\n            ],\n            [\n              -146.78009033203125,\n              60.99974987461457\n            ],\n            [\n              -146.78009033203125,\n              61.390143658580335\n            ],\n            [\n              -147.30056762695312,\n              61.390143658580335\n            ],\n            [\n              -147.30056762695312,\n              60.99974987461457\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae79d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sikonia, W. This information was gathered to provide a base for management and protection of the water resources of the reservation.

Ground water in the study area generally occurs in two aquifers. A shallow aquifer in weathered till (or fine sand and gravel) generally yields only enough water to wells to supply one or two households, and a lower artesian-aquifer system of sand and gravel layers near or below sea level produces higher yields--more than 65 gallons per minute to at least one well. Future supplies of ground water probably can be withdrawn from the lower artesian-aquifer system almost anywhere beneath the reservation. The estimated natural discharge of ground water from the lower artesian-aquifer system to Hood Canal and Port Gamble (bay) is about 42,000 cubic feet per day, or an average of about 220 gallons per minute. Of this amount, it is estimated that about 90 gallons per minute can be economically withdrawn, probably without greatly increasing chances of seawater intrusion. One well in the area taps a still deeper artesian aquifer that is otherwise unexplored. This aquifer, 75 to 80 feet or more below sea level, could possibly supply additional ground water for future use. Ground-water quality is good, but the water is moderately hard and has moderately high iron concentrations. Chloride analyses indicate that in 1977 there was no seawater intrusion into the lower aquifer tapped by wells in the community of Little Boston.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7966","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Little Boston Tribe of the Klallam Indian Nation","usgsCitation":"Lum, W.E., 1980, Water resources of the Port Gamble Indian Reservation, Washington: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 79-66, vi, 52 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7966.","productDescription":"vi, 52 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":159656,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1979/0066/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":363543,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1979/0066/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States ","state":"Washington","otherGeospatial":"Port Gamble Indian Reservation","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -123.07708740234374,\n              47.455951443369926\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.14736938476562,\n              47.455951443369926\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.14736938476562,\n              48.011975126709956\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.07708740234374,\n              48.011975126709956\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.07708740234374,\n              47.455951443369926\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac7e4b07f02db67af17","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lum, W.
