Most occur on the flanks of basins, along Basin and Range (late Miocene to Holocene) faults, while some occur in the inner parts of the basins. Surface temperatures of the springs range from slightly above ambient to, boiling; some springs are superheated. Maximum subsurface water temperatures calculated on the basis of quartz solubility range as high as 252?C, although most are below 190?C. Flows range from a trickle to several hundred liters per minute. \r\n\r\nThe Nevada geothermal systems differ markedly from the power-producing system at The Geysers, Calif., and from those areas with a high potential, for power production (e.g., Yellowstone Park, Wyo.; Jemez Mountains, N. Mex.). These other systems are associated with Quaternary felsic volcanic rocks and probably derive their heat from cooling magma rather high in the crust. In northern Nevada, however, felsic volcanic rocks are virtually all older than 10 million years, and. analogous magmatic heat sources are, therefore, probably lacking. \r\n\r\nNevada is part of an area of much higher average heat flow than the rest of the United States. In north-central Nevada, geothermal gradients are as great as 64?C per kilometer in bedrock and even higher in basin fill. The Chicot aquifer overlies the Evangeline aquifer, which is underlain by the Burkeville confining layer. Both aquifers consist of unconsolidated and discontinuous layers of sand and clay that dip toward the Gulf of Mexico. Heavy pumping of fresh water has caused large declines in the altitudes of the potentiometric surfaces in both aquifers and has created large cones of depression around Houston. The declines have caused compaction of clay layers, which has resulted in land surface subsidence and the movement of saline ground water toward the centers of the cones of depression. An electric analog model was used to study the hydrologic system and to simulate the declines in the altitudes of the potentiometric surfaces for several alternative plans of ground-water development. The results indicate that the largest part. of the pumped water comes from storage in the water-table part of the Chicot aquifer. Vertical leakage from the aquifers and water derived from the compaction of clay layers in the aquifers are also large sources of the water being pumped. The response of the system, as observed on the model, indicates that development of additional ground-water supplies from the water-table part of the Chicot aquifer north of Houston would result in a minimum decline of the altitudes of the potentiometric surfaces. Total withdrawals of about 1,000 million gallons (5.8 million cubic meters) per day may be possible without seriously, increasing subsidence or salt-water encroachment. Analyses of the recovery of water levels indicate that both land-surface subsidence and salt-water encroachment could be reduced by artificially recharging the artesian part of the For convenience there are also included records for a few pertinent gaging stations in bordering States. The records were collected and computed by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey, under the direction of T.R. Cummings, district chief. These data represent that portion of the National Water Data System collected by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in Michigan. </p><p>Records of discharge and stage of streams, and contents and stage of lakes or reservoirs are published in a series of U.S. Geological Survey water-supply papers entitled \"Surface Water Supply of the United States\". Through September 30, 1960, these water-supply papers were in an annual series and since then are in a 5-year series. Since 1951 there have been 20 volumes in the series; each volume covered an area whose boundaries coincided with those of certain natural drainage areas. The records in Michigan are contained in Part 4 of that series. </p><p>Beginning with the 1961 water year, streamflow records and related data have been released by the Geological Survey in annual reports on a State-boundary basis. Water temperatures were strongly influenced by wind-driven currents and water depth. The duration of thermal stratification varied from about 3 wk in the upstream portion of the reservoir to about 15 wk near the dam in 1968 and from unstratified upstream to about 15 wk downstream in 1969. Dissolved oxygen was usually near saturation, although it fell to 30% in 1968 and 43% in 1969. Nitrate nitrogen and soluble phosphorous were present on all sampling dates in 1969. The geology of t he coastal zone and offshore islands from Point Conception to the Mexican boundary serves as a frame of reference from which rock units and structures can be extrapolated into submerged parts of the borderland (sheet 1). Such extrapolations should be used with caution, for the tectonic evolution and depositional history of parts of the borderland may not have paralleled those of the mainland. The spatial variation is described by the use of sample statistics such as minima, maxima, and means of the variables at each station. The temporal variation is described by using nonparametric statistical testing procedures to assess time trends in the data at each station.</p><p>Evaluation of the coefficients (mean, amplitude, phase coefficient] derived by harmonic analysis of available daily stream-temperature records indicates adequate depiction of yearly seasonal variability and provides information relative to spatial variation in stream temperatures at most sites. Lowest harmonic amplitudes, which are indicative of little seasonal variability in stream temperature, were observed in Florida, along the eastern Gulf coast, and along the Pacific coast. Greatest annual variations in stream temperature exists in the Souris, Red (of the North), and Missouri River basins.</p><p>Temporal variations in stream temperature denoted by significant changes (at the 99 percent level of confidence) in annual harmonic coefficients were indicated at 15 of 80 stations used in the evaluation. Trends in stream temperature were found to exist at one or more stations in each of the six following areas: the Atlantic coast above Florida; Florida and the eastern Gulf; the Souris River, Red River of the North, and Missouri River basins; the Texas Gulf and Rio Grande area; the Colorado River basin; and the Pacific coast area.</p><p>Significant trends (at the 99 percent level of confidence) were found in the long-term streamflow chemical quality record at 15 of 88 stations analyzed. Of these stations, 10 showed an increase in levels of specific conductances while 5- showed a decrease.
