Maps are based on water levels measured in wells each May to coincide with seasonal low levels and each September to coincide with seasonal high levels. The mapped area shows 14 well fields that supplied 141.8 million gallons to municipalities on September 18, 1980. The water is withdrawn from the Floridan aquifer, the major aquifer in Florida. The effect of localized withdrawal of ground water is shown on the maps as depressions in both the potentiometric and water-table surfaces. Potentiometric levels in the Floridan aquifer were higher in September 1980 than in May 1980 and generally lower than in September 1979. Annual change of water levels ranged from a decrease of 6 feet at Morris Bridge well field to an increase of 2 feet at Eldridge-Wilde well field. Highly magnetic metasedimentary rocks of the Peters Creek Schist and Sykesville Formation produce most of the magnetic anomalies of Fairfax County. In contrast, the granitoid rocks of the Occoquan pluton are relatively non-magnetic and are characterized by broad magnetic and gravity lows. Linear magnetic highs without corresponding gravity anomalies, plus samples from a test well, indicate that Peters Creek Schist underlies the east side of the Triassic-Jurassic Culpeper basin. The continuation of the Piney Branch mafic-ultramafic complex beneath the basin is indicated by a gravity high. Basement lithology beneath the Coastal Plain sediments is interpreted by the following anomaly combinations: Sykesville Formation - magnetic high with no gravity expression; Chopawamsic Formation -magnetic and corresponding gravity high; Occoquan granitoid rocks -magnetic and corresponding gravity low.

Analysis of a detailed gravity profile across a diabase body near Herndon indicates that the intrusive is a sill which is partly discordant with the sedimentary rocks of the Culpeper basin. The limbs of the horseshoe-shaped exposure dip gently toward the center; the west limb, 500 m thick, dips 15° east and the east limb, 250 m thick, dips west 3° or less. A second gravity profile across a similar diabase body near Centreville suggests that part of its western limb consists of a narrow dike-like body projecting upwards from a 200 m-thick buried sill. Both of these bodies apparently have a spoon-shaped structure with a discordant northern edge which was probably controlled by faulting. Similarities between these intrusives apply also to the small Boyds diabase in Maryland. The three diabase bodies are aligned, have similar magnetic expressions, and abut the edge of the Culpeper basin, suggesting that they were intruded under similar structural settings at about the same time. The northward decrease in size of these intrusives may be a consequence of the inward-dipping shape and a greater degree of uplift and deeper erosion to the north. By this reasoning, the Boyds body represents only the basal remnant of a largely eroded structure with the Centreville body preserving more of the original form.

A ground magnetometer survey and an aeroradioactivity survey indicate the presence of additional zones in the thermal metamorphic aureole in the sedimentary rocks around the large diabase bodies. A 150-300-m-wide inner magnetite-rich zone above and below the Herndon sill is inferred from anomalies on a detailed ground magnetic profile. Aeroradioactivity data show a rim of high values outside the geologically mapped aureole of both the Herndon and Centreville bodies. This suggests a subtle outer zone slightly enriched in thermally expelled radio-elements.

Deep resistivity soundings in the Culpeper basin indicate that the sedimentary rocks may reach a thickness of about 3600 feet (1100 m) at the western edge of the county.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr801165","usgsCitation":"Daniels, D.L., 1980, Though confirming a deformational style first reported in a 1963 study by Michael Churkin, our data suggest that the complexity and regional extent of the thrust zone were not previously recognized. Most previously published sections of the Phi Kappa and Trail Creek Formations were measured across unrecognized thrust faults and therefore include not only structural repetitions of graptolitic Ordovician and Silurian rocks but also other tectonically juxtaposed lithostratigraphic units of diverse ages as well. Because of this discovery, the need to reconsider the stratigraphic validity of these formations and their lithology, nomenclature, structural distribution, facies relations, and graptolite faunas has arisen. \r\n\r\nThe Phi Kappa Formation in most thrust slices has internal stratigraphic continuity despite the intensity of deformation to which it was subjected. As revised herein, the Phi Kappa Formation is restricted to a structurally repeated succession of predominantly black, carbonaceous, graptolitic argillite and shale. Some limy, light-gray-weathering shale occurs in the middle part of the section, and fine-grained locally pebbly quartzite is present at the base. The basal quartzite is here named the Basin Gulch Quartzite Member of the Phi Kappa. The Phi Kappa redefined on a lithologic basis represents the span of Ordovician time from W. B. N. Berry's graptolite zones 2-4 through 15 and also includes approximately 17 m of lithologically identical shale of Early and Middle Silurian age at the top. The lower contact of the formation as revised is tectonic. The Phi Kappa is gradationally overlain by the Trail Creek Formation as restricted herein. Most of the coarser clastic rocks reported in previously measured sections of the Phi Kappa, as well as the sequence along Phi Kappa Creek from which the name originates, are excluded from the Phi Kappa as revised and are reassigned to two structural plates of Mississippian Copper Basin Formation; other strata now excluded from the formation are reassigned to the Trail Creek Formation and to an unnamed Silurian and Devonian unit. As redefined, the Phi Kappa Formation is only about 240 m thick, compared with the 3,860 m originally estimated, and it occupies only about 25 percent of the outcrop area previously mapped in 1930 by H. G. Westgate and C. P. Ross. Despite this drastic reduction in thickness and the exclusion of the rocks along Phi Kappa Creek, the name Phi Kappa is retained because of widely accepted prior usage to denote the Ordovician graptolitic shale facies of central Idaho, and because the Phi Kappa Formation as revised is present in thrust slices on Phi Kappa Mountain, at the head of Phi Kappa Creek. The lithic and faunal consistency of this unit throughout the area precludes the necessity for major facies telescoping along individual faults within the outcrop belt. However, tens of kilometers of tectonic shortening seems required to juxtapose the imbricated Phi Kappa shale facies with the Middle Ordovician part of the carbonate and quartzite shale sequence of east central Idaho. The shelf rocks are exposed in the Wildhorse structural window of the northeastern Pioneer Mountains, and attain a thickness of at least 1,500 m throughout the region north and east of the Pioneer Mountains. The Phi Kappa is in direct thrust contact on intensely deformed medium- to high-grade metamorphic equivalents of the same shelf sequence in the Pioneer window at the south end of the Phi Kappa-Trail Creek outcrop belt. Along East Pass, Big Lake, and Pine Creeks, north of the Pioneer Mountains, some rocks previously mapped as Ramshorn Slate are lithologically and faunally equivalent to the P","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/pp1090","usgsCitation":"Dover, J.H., Berry, W.B., and Ross, R.J., 1980, Ordovician and Silurian Phi Kappa and Trail Creek formations, Pioneer Mountains, central Idaho: Stratigraphic and structural revisions, and new data on graptolite faunas: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1090, Report: vi, 54 p.; 1 Plate: 29.00 x 39.00 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/pp1090.","productDescription":"Report: vi, 54 p.; 1 Plate: 29.00 x 39.00 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":104549,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_4718.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"4718"},{"id":32698,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1090/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":32699,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1090/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":121437,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1090/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho","otherGeospatial":"Pioneer Mountains","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -114.3333,\n 43.9297\n ],\n [\n -114.3333,\n 43.7728\n ],\n [\n -114.1667,\n 43.7728\n ],\n [\n -114.1667,\n 43.9297\n ],\n [\n -114.3333,\n 43.9297\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a60e4b07f02db635245","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dover, James H.","contributorId":43382,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dover","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":151728,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Berry, William B. The Jackson Group consists entirely of marine strata in the region of study. It includes the fossiliferous greensands of the Moodys Branch Formation at the base and the calcareous Yazoo Clay at the top. \r\n\r\nOne hundred seventy-four sporomorph (spore and pollen) types are known from the Jackson Group and adjacent strata in the area of study; all but four of them were observed by the writer. The 174 types are assigned to 74 form genera, 37 modern genera, and 25 new species. \r\n\r\nEleven species of pollen grains appear to have accurately determined restricted stratigraphic ranges within the sequence studied. Parsonsidites conspicuus Frederiksen and Ericipites aff. E. ericius (Potonie) Potonie have first occurrences (range bottoms) at the base of the Jackson Group. Aglaoreidia pristina Fowler has its first occurrence near the top of the Jackson. Eight species have last occurrences at or just below the top of the Jackson Group. These are Casuarinidites cf. C. granilabratus (Stanley) Srivastava, Chrysophyllum brevisulcatum (Frederiksen) n. comb., Cupanieidites orthoteichus Cookson and Pike, Symplocos gemroota n. sp., Nudopollis terminalis (Pflug and Thomson) Elsik, Sabal cf. S. granopollenites Rouse, Caprifoliipites tantulus n. sp., and Nypa echinata (Muller) n. comb. \r\n\r\nFrom the upper part of the Claiborne Group up through most of the Jackson, the dominant sporomorph types are Cupuliferdipollenites spp., Momipites coryloides Wodehouse, Cupuliferoidaepollenites liblarensis (Thomson) Potonie, Momipites micTofoveolatus (Stanley) Nichols, Quercoidites microhenricii (Potonie) Potonie, and Araliaceoipollenites granulatus (Potonie) n. comb. All these were probably produced by trees of the Juglandaceae and Fagaceae. Relative frequencies of each of these pollen types fluctuate little within the interval from the upper part of the Claiborne to near the top of the Jackson. Near the top of the Jackson Group, there is a rapid rise to dominance or near dominance of the sporomorph assemblages by Quercoidites inamoenus (Takahashi) n. comb. (Fagaceae, Dryophyllum or Quercus). This remains the dominant sporomorph species through the lower part of the Vicksburg Group. \r\n\r\nOn the basis of these range and relative-frequency data for spores and pollen grains, the Jackson Group is divided into two zones. Zone I includes the upper part of the Claiborne Group and all but the uppermost part of the Jackson Group; zone II includes the uppermost part of the Yazoo Clay and extends into the overlying Vicksburg Group. The two zones and the boundary between them can be traced from western Mississippi to western Alabama. Sporomorph data support evidence from physical stratigraphy and from other fossils that only a minor disconformity is present between the Claiborne and Jackson Groups in this region. In western Mississippi, the zone I-zone II boundary is below the minor disconformity separating the open marine Yazoo Clay from the uppermost lagoonal part of that formation. Sporomorph data agree with faunal evidence that no unconformity is between the Jack son and Vicksburg Groups in eastern Mississippi. No sporomorph-bearing samples were available from the uppermost part of the Yazoo Clay at Little Stave Creek in western Alabama; however, samples from above and below the uppermost part of the Yazoo show that the zone I-zone II boundary either coincides with, or is slightly below, the unconformity separating the Jackson and Vicksburg Groups there. \r\n\r\nThe information on sporomorph ranges and relative frequencies suggests that the flora and the vegetation of southeastern North America changed little from late middle Eocene time until almost the end of the late Eocene. Lectotypes are designated for all species which have syntypic suites and the lectotypes, holotypes, or hypotypes for all but two species are illustrated. A new genus Otikocythere is proposed, with Cythere punctistriata Ulrich and Bassler 1904 as the type species. A new species, Hulingsina calvertensis, is also proposed. All of the species are placed in an updated biostratigraphic framework.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. Print.
