Samples were collected monthly and during periods of storm runoff from December 1976 through July 1978. Concentrations of chemical constituents relevant to agricultural practices were found to be low, even during periods of storm runoff. Concentrations of total nitrogen and total phosphorus ranged from 0.30 to 1.60 and 0.01 to 0.42 milligrams per liter, respectively. Copper, arsenic, lead, mercury, and zinc concentrations were low and did not exceed Georgia Department of Natural Resources (1977) or U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (1977) standards for safe drinking water. Concentrations of suspended sediment and total nitrogen were found to remain relatively constant over a wide range of water discharge. Concentrations of total phosphorus showed a better relation to water discharge at Little River near Lenox than at Spring Creek near Iron City. Dissolved—solids concentrations in both streams generally decreased with an increase in water discharge. Average annual yields of selected constituents were low. Total nitrogen and total phosphorus yields were 0.60 to 0.63 and 0.04 to 0.06 tons per year per square mile in Little River and Spring Creek basins. Atrazine, butylate, and ethroprop pesticides were detected in concentrations up to 0.91 micrograms per liter in storm— runoff samples collected during the active farming season.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr80771","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Georgia Department of Natural A prominent reflector found at 27 m below the mudline (water depths 7-9 m) has a negative reflection coefficient greater than 0.5. The large acoustic impedance contrast, coupled with a report of gas encountered at a corresponding depth in a nearby drillhole, shows that the reflector is the upper boundary of a zone containing gas. The gas exists in sandy gravel capped by stiff, silty clay. Analysis of unprocessed conventional high-resolution records from the region indicates that the gas-bearing layer may extend over an area of at least 50 km at depths of 19-35 m below the mudline. Similar-appearing reflectors, previously unexplained, occur in patches over wide regions of the shelf where offshore oil development is beginning at a rapid pace. This suggests the exercise of caution with respect to possible hazards from shallow gas pockets.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr80809","usgsCitation":"Boucher, G.W., Reimnitz, E., and Kempema, E.W., 1980, Seismic evidence for an extensive gas-bearing layer at shallow depth, offshore from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-809, 20 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr80809.","productDescription":"20 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144745,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0809/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":418408,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0809/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Prudhoe Bay","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -149.21344983650238,\n              70.52714068198648\n            ],\n            [\n              -149.21344983650238,\n              70.14694737734465\n            ],\n            [\n              -147.76961148752463,\n              70.14694737734465\n            ],\n            [\n              -147.76961148752463,\n              70.52714068198648\n            ],\n            [\n              -149.21344983650238,\n              70.52714068198648\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ae4b07f02db5fb98f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Boucher, Gary Wynn","contributorId":72786,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Boucher","given":"Gary","email":"","middleInitial":"Wynn","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":166630,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Reimnitz, Erk","contributorId":17963,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reimnitz","given":"Erk","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":166628,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Kempema, Edward W.","contributorId":39780,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kempema","given":"Edward","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":166629,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The ground-water system that feeds the streams is a shallow subsystem that overlies the regional subsurface flow system. The Connetquot Brook basin was selected for study because it has not been appreciably affected by urbanization. Studies in the basin indicate that the shallow ground-water flow system circulates to a depth of less than 30 feet below the stream channel. Directly beneath the stream, shallow ground-water flow is upward toward the stream channel, but elsewhere in the basin it is predominantly horizontal. Relatively large increases in head with depth in the first 3 feet below the streambed suggest local differences in hydraulic conductivity or in size of area through which the water flows, or both. Water-table contour maps of the area adjacent to Connetquot River for September 1977 and March 1978 indicate that the shape of the water table and the direction of flow lines change seasonally. Variations in ground-water levels and gradients directly affect the rates of ground-water seepage to the stream. This conclusion is supported by iron and manganese concentrations in soils and carbon and oxygen isotope ratios in rock samples. Seeping hydrocarbons provided reducing conditions sufficient to enable divalent iron and manganese to be organically complexed or adsorbed on solids in the soils. These bound or adsorped elements in the divalent state are essential to plants, and the plants readily assimilate them. A recent estimate of the total annual cost of landslide damage is in excess of $1 billion {Schuster, 1978}. The damages can be significantly reduced, however, through the combined action of technical experts, government, and the public. \r\n\r\nBefore they can be expected to take action, local governments need to have an appreciation of costs of damage in their areas of responsibility and of the reductions in losses that can be achieved. Where studies of cost of landslide damages have been conducted, it is apparent that {1} costs to the public and private sectors of our economy due to landslide damage are much larger than anticipated; {2} taxpayers and public officials generally are unaware of the magnitude of the cost, owing perhaps to the lack of any centralization of data; and {3} incomplete records and unavailability of records result in lower reported costs than actually were incurred. \r\n\r\nThe U.S. Geological Survey has developed a method to estimate the cost of landslide damages in regional and local areas and has applied the method in three urban areas and one rural area. Costs are for different periods and are unadjusted for inflation; therefore, strict comparisons of data from different years should be avoided. Estimates of the average annual cost of landslide damage for the urban areas studied are $5,900,000 in the San Francisco Bay area; $4,000,000 in Allegheny County, Pa.; and $5,170,000 in Hamilton County, Ohio. Adjusting these figures for the population of each area, the annual cost of damages per capita are $1.30 in the nine-county San Francisco Bay region; $2.50 in Allegheny County, Pa.; and $5.80 in Hamilton County, Ohio. On the basis of data from other sources, the estimated annual damages on a per capita basis for the City of Los Angeles, Calif., are about $1.60. If the costs were available for the damages from landslides in Los Angeles in 1977-78 and 1979-80, the annual per capita costs probably would be much larger. \r\n\r\nThe landslide near the rural community of Manti, Utah, caused an expenditure of about $1,800,000 or about $1,000 per person during the period 1974-76. Because a recurrence for such a landslide cannot be established, it is not possible to develop a meaningful estimate of annual per capita damages. \r\n\r\nCommunities are urged to examine their costs of landslide damage and to evaluate the feasibility of several alternative programs that, for a modest investment, could significantly reduce these losses.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/cir832","usgsCitation":"Fleming, R.W., and Taylor, F.A., 1980, Estimating the costs of landslide damage in the United States: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 832, iii, 21 p. :ill., map ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir832.","productDescription":"iii, 21 p. :ill., map ;27 cm.","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":31031,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1980/0832/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":124694,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1980/0832/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ce4b07f02db5fc80a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fleming, Robert W.","contributorId":102062,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fleming","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147875,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Taylor, Fred A.","contributorId":38142,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Taylor","given":"Fred","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147874,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Comparison of results based on 3 years of data to those for the 10 water years, 1957-66, provides an indication of the adequacy of the data obtained during the short period to define the long-term relation between sediment transport and streamflow. During 1909-66, sediment was transported to the entire San Francisco Bay system at an average rate of 8.6 million cubic yards per year. The Sacramento and San Joaquin River basins provided about 83% of the sediment inflow to the system annually during 1957-66 and 86% during 1909-66. About 98% of this inflow was measured or estimated at sediment measuring sites. Measured sediment inflow directly to the bays comprised only about 40% of the total discharged by basins directly tributary to the bays. About 90% of the total sediment discharge to the delta and the bays in the San Francisco Bay system thus was determined on the basis of systematic measurements. Geologic and topographic features that control the movement and regional availability of ground water are explained and illustrated. Five aquifer systems beneath the most populous areas are described. Estimates of ground-water yield were determined for the region by using ground-water data for the populated areas and by extrapolating known subsurface conditions and interpreting subsurface conditions from surficial features in the other areas. Area maps of generalized geology, Quaternary sediment thickness, and general availability of ground water are shown. Surface-water resources are summarized by describing how basin characteristics affect the discharge in streams. Seasonal trend of streamflow for three types of streams is described. Regression equations for 4 streamflow characteristics (annual, monthly minimum, and maximum discharge) were obtained by using gaging station streamflow characteristics and 10 basin characteristics. In the 24 regression equations presented, drainage area is the most significant basin characteristic, but 5 others are used. Maps of mean annual unit runoff and minimum unit yield for 7 consecutive days with a recurrence interval of 10 years are shown. One geologic hazard to such development is landsliding. A landslide sufficiently representative of others in the area was chosen for detailed seismic studies. Studies of this landslide show that a low-velocity layer overlies a high-velocity layer both on the slide and away from it and that the contact between the volocity layers is nearly parallel with the preslide topographic surface. Computed shear and other elastic moduli of the low-velocity layer are about one-tenth those of the high-velocity layer. When failure occurs within the slope materials, it will very likely be confined to the low-velocity layer. The number and position of main shear planes in the landslide are unknown, but the main slippage surface is probably near the contact between the low- and high-velocity layers. The main cause of landslide failure in the study area is apparently the addition of moisture to the low-velocity layer.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/pp1170C","usgsCitation":"Miller, C., Ramirez, A., and Bullard, T., 1980, Seismic properties investigation of the Springer Ranch landslide, Powder River basin, Wyoming: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1170, 7 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp1170C.","productDescription":"7 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":119204,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1170c/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":60388,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1170c/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f6e4b07f02db5f1921","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Miller, C.H.","contributorId":19148,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Miller","given":"C.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":208679,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ramirez, A.L.","contributorId":14474,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ramirez","given":"A.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":208678,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Bullard, T.G.","contributorId":11262,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bullard","given":"T.G.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":208677,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
