The ages suggest that rocks cropping \nout along Albatross Bank, at the shelf edge, are as old as middle or late \nMiocene, and that the anticline forming Albatross Bank, previously defined \nwith multi- and single-channel seismic records, plunges northeastward in the \nsampled area. Foraminiferal paleobathymetry further suggests that m.ajor \ntectonic activity has occurred on the Kodiak shelf since the early or middle \nPliocene, including two episodes of vertical movement--first subsidence on the \norder of 2000 m, then uplift of at least 3000 m. Suspended-sediment concentrations, particle size, and streamflow characteristics were measured at gaging stations upstream and downstream from the reservoir from November 1975 through September 1977. Characteristics of the sediments were determined from borings and samples taken while the reservoir was drained in September 1976. The sediment surface and the pre-reservoir topography were mapped. Sediment thickness ranged from less than 1 foot near the shore to more than 20 feet in the old stream channel. The original reservoir capacity and the volume of deposited sediment were calculated to be 815 acre-feet and 487 acre-feet, respectively. Sediment size ranged from clay and silt in the pool area to large cobbles and boulders at the upstream end of the reservoir. Analyses of all samples averaged 43 percent sand, 40 percent silt, and 17 percent clay, and particle size typically increased upstream. Cobbles, boulders, and gravel deposits were not sampled. The average density of the deposited sediment was about 80 pounds per cubic foot for the entire reservoir. The reservoir was able to trap about 80 percent of the sediment entering from upstream, early in its history. This trap efficiency has declined as the reservoir filled with sediment. Today (1976), it traps only sand and silt-sized sediment, or only about 20 percent of the sediment entering from upstream. Data collected during this study indicate that essentially all of the clay-sized sediment (&lt;0.062 mm) passes through the reservoir. The gross rate of deposition was 7.0 acre-feet per year over the reservoir history, 1907-76. Rates during 1907-63 and 1963-76 were 7.4 and 5.7 acre-feet per year, respectively, determined by the cesium-137 method. Based on scant data, the average annual sediment yield of the total 279 square mile drainage area above the gaging station at the powerhouse was about 50 tons per square mile. One of the methods by which the use of highly variable streamflow in the area can be evaluated is with the aid of multiyear low-flow frequency information. Using data form 19 streamflow-gaging stations in the study area, maps were developed from which the mean annual discharge and discharges for the 2- and 50-year recurrence interval for durations of 12,24, 36, 48, and 60 months can be obtained for rural ungaged sites that have drainage areas of less than 1,000 square miles. Discharges for intervening recurrence intervals can be obtained by interpolation. Extrapolation of regionalized discharges in this report to drainage areas smaller than about 50 square miles and larger than about 1,000 square miles has not been validated. Also provided for each site are regression equations relating specific conductance to each of 12 chemical constituents and a regression equation relating specific conductance to stream discharge. The descriptive statistics are presented by river basins. Water leaving these basins that has the lowest mean specific conductance (266 umho/cm) is from the Niobrara River at Verdel, and water that has the highest (1,890 umho/cm) is from the South Platte River at Roscoe. Statewide, the principal cations in streamflow are calcium and sodium, and the principal anions are bicarbonate and sulfate. Calcium and bicarbonate usually predominate where mean specific conductance is less than 1,000 umho/cm, and sodium and sulfate predominate where the mean exceeds 1,000 umho/cm. Based on regression equations, dissolved solids, hardness, calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate, with some exceptions, correlate well with specific conductance for all stream sites. Illustrations of how regression equations may be used to estimate water quality of streamflow are given and are compared with values from actual analyses. The herbicides primarily used were picloram, 2,4-D, and dicamba. The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Wyoming Department of Agriculture, sampled and analyzed water from selected streams for these herbicides plus silvex; 2,4,5-T; and 2,4-DP.</p><p>This report contains data for samples collected during 1977 and 1978. The most commonly detected herbicides in water samples were 2,4-D with 41-percent nonzero values and picloram with 34.5-percent nonzero values. Herbicide occurrence in bottom-material samples was uncommon; dicamba was found with 9-percent nonzero values. The maximum herbicide concentration in water was 1.1 micrograms per liter of 2,4-D, and the maximum herbicide concentration in bottom material was 8.0 micrograms per kilogram of 2,4-D. These samples, from water depths of 3,150 m to 200 m, combined with seismic reflection data, identify seven rock units in apparently normal stratigraphic position. From oldest to youngest they are: Unit A: Hard graywacke, argillite, and possible intrusive rocks of inferred Late Cretaceous age that crop out in the eastern part of the slope and probably underlie much of the Fairweather Ground. Unit B: At least 900 m of sandstone, conglomerate, shale, and subordinate basaltic volcanic rocks west of Yakutat Seavalley between 142° W. and 143° W. that is not dated but is probably of late Paleocene to early Eocene age. Unit C: 1,300 m of basaltic flow and pyroclastic rocks with associated clastic marine sedimentary rocks that makes up much of the rugged lower slope throughout the area. This sequence is largely, or entirely, of early Eocene age. Unit D: Up to 2,100 m of early and middle Eocene sandstone, conglomerate, siltstone, and tuffaceous organic-rich shale that partly overlies, and partly intertongues with, the volcanic unit. Unit E: 800 m of early to late Eocene and early Oligocene(?) organic-rich shale, tuffaceous shale, siltstone, and sandstone that partly intertongues with, and partly overlies units C and D. Unit F: 300+ m of siltstone, at least in part of late Oligocene age, that crops out locally along the upper slope where it unconformably overlies Unit E. Unit G: Up to 2,000 m of late Cenozoic (middle Miocene? and younger) clastic sedimentary rocks including abundant glaciomarine deposits that unconformably overlie all the older units.</p><p>The early Tertiary sequence sampled on the continental slope differs strikingly in lithology and structure from coeval rocks exposed onshore or penetrated in unsuccessful exploratory wells on the adjacent mainland. Units B, D, and E include abundant source rocks that have undergone a thermal history resulting in local generation of hydrocarbons. Sandstones from Units D and E locally have secondary porosities up to 31 percent and permeabilities to 36 md. Seismic reflection data indicate that the sequence with the most favorable source and reservoir potential (Units B, D, E) dips northeastward beneath OCS Lease Sale 55 where it could be a favorable exploratory target if involved in suitable traps. He reported encountering water at a depth of about 8 feet in June 1975 and also reported a rise in water level to approximately land surface by early August. Neither incident was expected by the developer. The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Municipality of Anchorage, had conducted an artificial-recharge experiment approximately 9,000 feet northeast of Spring Acres Subdivision from May 20 through September 19, 1975. Recharge experiments were also conducted in 1971, 1973, and 1974. The proximity of the 1975 recharge experiment to the subdivision caused speculation on the possible connection between the experiment and the water problems encountered by the developer.</p><p>The effect of the artificial-recharge experiments on water levels at Spring Acres Subdivision was evaluated by using two digital-computer models constructed to simulate the water-level rises induced by the artificial recharge. The models predicted that the artificial recharge would have caused water levels in the aquifer immediately underlying Spring Acres Subdivision to rise approximately 0.2 foot from May 20 to August 7, 1975. The models also predicted a total rise in ground-water levels of 1.1 feet at this location from July 16, 1973, to August 7, 1975, as a result of the artificial-recharge experiments.</p><p>Water-level data collected for auger holes in March 1975 by a consulting firm for the contractor indicated a depth to water of 6 to 7 feet below land surface at Spring Acres Subdivision at this time. Water levels measured in and near Spring Acres Subdivision several years before and after the 1973-75 artificial-recharge experiments showed seasonal rises of 2 to 12.4 feet. A depth to water below land surface of 2.6 feet was measured 600 feet from the subdivision in 1971 and in the subdivision in 1977. Four of fourteen known shallow piercement salt domes within the basin--Keechi, Mount Sylvan, Oakwood, and Palestine Salt Domes&mdash;have been selected as candidate domes for further study and possible selection as storage sites.</p>\n<p>The salt within these domes has penetrated as much as 20,000 feet of Mesozoic and Cenozoic strata, and presently .extends to within 120 to 800 feet of the land surface. The salt penetrates or closely underlies major freshwater and salinewater aquifers within the basin. To provide a safe repository for radioactive wastes within one or more of these domes, a thorough understanding of the geohydrology needs to be obtained, and the hydrologic stability of the domes needs to be established for the expected life of the storage facility.</p>\n<p>Dissolution may exist at all four candidate salt domes, possibly through contact with Cretaceous or Tertiary aquifers, or through fault systems in the vicinity of the domes. Strata overlying and surrounding Palestine and Keechi Salt Domes have been arched into steeply-dipping folds that are complexly faulted. Similar conditions exist at Oakwood and Mount Sylvan Domes, except that the Tertiary strata have been only moderately disturbed.</p>\n<p>Cap rock, which is generally accepted to be an indication of salt dissolution, is present in varying amounts over all four domes. Salinewater has been reported at the surface at all candidate domes except Oakwood, but only two water wells near the domes yield water containing possible anomalous concentrations of dissolved chloride--one at Keechi and one at Oakwood. Possible subsurface plumes of salinewater, which are indications of instability, exist at all four domes.</p>\n<p>Additional problems concerning the hydrologic stability of Oakwood and Palestine Salt Domes have resulted from the disposal of oil-field salinewater in the cap rock at the Oakwood Dome and previous solution mining of salt at the Palestine Dome Additional investigations are needed to determine if a selected dome is hydrologically stable.
