Because the volume of use of these compounds is low, insufficient data is available on their toxic properties. This report is an attempt to summarize the known data from published and industry sources. The physical properties, hazards of handling,proper storage facilities, and adequate protective Clothing are discussed for each compound as well as for their common and less-common solvents. Toxicity data for these materials is listed along with exposure symptoms and suggested first aid treatments. Safety for the worker is emphasized. Three reclamation methods which recover the solvent used as a dilutant and purify the heavy liquid are discussed and illustrated. These include: the water cascade, re fluxing-distillation-condensation, and flash evaporation methods. Various techniques for restoration and stabilization of these heavy liquids are also included.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, Geological Survey ;\r\nFree on application to Branch of Distribution, U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/cir827","usgsCitation":"Hauff, P.L., and Airey, J., 1980, The handling, hazards, and maintenance of heavy liquids in the geologic laboratory: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 827, iv, 24 p. :10 ill. ;26 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir827.","productDescription":"iv, 24 p. :10 ill. ;26 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":118130,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1980/0827/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":30896,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1980/0827/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a90e4b07f02db655f41","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hauff, Phoebe L.","contributorId":10402,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hauff","given":"Phoebe","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147684,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Airey, Joseph","contributorId":92105,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Airey","given":"Joseph","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147685,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

This report updates a previous report with 2 years of additional data collection and presents statistics and regression equations for water-quality variables. The most apparent feature of the study is the variability of water quality. Time-trend differences are most noticeable, with areal differences being present but more subtle. In comparing stations at the mouths of the five major drainages entering the Yellowstone River from the study area, water from the Powder River ranks near the middle of the group in dissolved-solids concentration (mean of 1,390 mg/L), but far exceeds the other drainages in suspended-sediment concentration, often exceeding 10,000 mg/L. The Tongue River generally has the best overall quality with respect to dissolved constituents; extremes are moderated by mixing in the Tongue River Reservoir. Suspended sediment ranged from 5 to 4,360 mg/L. Rosebud Creek shows about a 50-percent average increase in dissolved-solids concentration from the most upstream station to the mouth. Armells and Sarpy Creeks, smallest of the five drainages, have a pool-riffle configuration that influences both dissolved and suspended constituents. Pools permit greater evaporation, thus increasing dissolved-constituent concentrations. They also act as sediment traps. Streamflow records presented for 45 gaging stations and 45 crest-stage gages for the period of record. Streamflow record collection in the Yellowstone River basin began in 1889. For each gaging station selected for this report, a brief description is given for station location, drainage area , period of record, revisions of previously published records, type and history of gages, regulation and diversions, and extremes of discharge. These data are followed by tables of monthly and annual flow statistics, high-flow and low-flow frequency data, flood-frequency data, flow-duration information, and for natural-flow sites selected basin characteristics. For each crest-stage gage, the brief description consists of location, drainage area, period of record, and type and history of gage. This information was gathered to provide a base for management and protection of the water resources of the reservation.</p><p>Ground water in the study area generally occurs in two aquifers. A shallow aquifer in weathered till (or fine sand and gravel) generally yields only enough water to wells to supply one or two households, and a lower artesian-aquifer system of sand and gravel layers near or below sea level produces higher yields--more than 65 gallons per minute to at least one well. Future supplies of ground water probably can be withdrawn from the lower artesian-aquifer system almost anywhere beneath the reservation. The estimated natural discharge of ground water from the lower artesian-aquifer system to Hood Canal and Port Gamble (bay) is about 42,000 cubic feet per day, or an average of about 220 gallons per minute. Of this amount, it is estimated that about 90 gallons per minute can be economically withdrawn, probably without greatly increasing chances of seawater intrusion. One well in the area taps a still deeper artesian aquifer that is otherwise unexplored. This aquifer, 75 to 80 feet or more below sea level, could possibly supply additional ground water for future use. Ground-water quality is good, but the water is moderately hard and has moderately high iron concentrations. Chloride analyses indicate that in 1977 there was no seawater intrusion into the lower aquifer tapped by wells in the community of Little Boston.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7966","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Little Boston Tribe of the Klallam Indian Nation","usgsCitation":"Lum, W.E., 1980, Water resources of the Port Gamble Indian Reservation, Washington: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 79-66, vi, 52 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7966.","productDescription":"vi, 52 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":159656,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1979/0066/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":363543,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1979/0066/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States ","state":"Washington","otherGeospatial":"Port Gamble Indian Reservation","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -123.07708740234374,\n              47.455951443369926\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.14736938476562,\n              47.455951443369926\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.14736938476562,\n              48.011975126709956\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.07708740234374,\n              48.011975126709956\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.07708740234374,\n              47.455951443369926\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac7e4b07f02db67af17","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lum, W. The mean annual precipitation varies locally from a high of 5,000 mm (millimeters) to a low of 730 mm. Maximum precipitation occurs within the peaks of Sierra de Luquillo, and minimum precipitation occurs along the windward parts of the smaller islands and in southwestern Puerto Rico, which lies in a rain shadow. The annual average precipitation is 1,800 mm in Puerto Rico and 1,061 mm in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Of this amount 1,130 mm in Puerto Rico and 990 mm in the U.S. Virgin Islands are lost to evapotranspiration.</p>\n<p>Aquifers constitute a valuable resource in the Caribbean Region. In Puerto Rico, ground-water withdrawals supply about 38 percent of the total water requirements, whereas in the U.S. Virgin Islands they supply 10 percent. Of the ground-water withdrawal of 350 hm<sup>3</sup>/yr (cubic hectometers per year) in Puerto Rico, 54 percent is used for irrigation, 29 percent is used by industry, and 17 percent is used for public water supply. Ground-water withdrawal in the U.S. Virgin Islands is about 1.9 hm<sup>3</sup>/yr and is almost equally distributed between public supply and privately owned wells. Based on past trends and future economic expectations in the region, estimates are that by 1985 ground-water pumpage in Puerto Rico will be about 426 hm<sup>3</sup>/yr with additional future development potential; U.S. Virgin Islands pumpage may amount to 4.5 hm<sup>3</sup>/yr, which is the estimated maximum sustained yield of all aquifers under natural recharge conditions.</p>\n<p>Most large ground-water developments in Puerto Rico have been in the North Coast and South Coast ground-water provinces. The North Coast province contains the island's most productive aquifer, which was virtually undeveloped until 1968, when an artesian system having a 150-meter head was tapped. Since then, the artesian aquifer has undergone rapid development for industrial water supply. The extent of the artesian system is unknown, but it has been tapped within the Montebello Limestone Member of the Cibao Formation and in the upper part of the Lares Limestone. The south-coast aquifer consists of deep alluvial deposits. This aquifer has been extensively developed for irrigation and industrial water supply and can sustain only minor future development under present water-management conditions.</p>\n<p>In the U.S. Virgin Islands the most extensive aquifer is fragmented igneous rock, but the most productive aquifers are the marl and alluvial deposits of central St. Croix. Although yields from wells in central St. Croix are low (less than 6.3 liters per second), the aquifer provides about 0.86 hm<sup>3</sup>/yr to public water-supply wells and 0.54 hm<sup>3</sup>/yr to private wells. Future development within this aquifer could probably produce an additional 1.0 hm<sup>3</sup>/yr under natural infiltration conditions.</p>\n<p>Ground-water resources will continue to be important within the region. In order to meet future needs, it is necessary that hydrologic principles be applied in managing the total water resource. Optimal use of the water resources can be accomplished through conjunctive use of surface and ground waters and through conservation practices. Optimal use may involve artificial recharge, ground-water salvage, saline-ground-water mining, use of seawater, desalination of saline ground water, waste-water reuse, and use of underground space for temporary storage of wastes, which could otherwise contaminate valuable water supplies.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/pp813U","usgsCitation":"Gómez-Gómez, F., and Heisel, J.E., 1980, Summary appraisals of the nation's ground-water resources – Caribbean region: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 813, Report: vi, 32 p.; The aquifer system is a major source of water supply in the area. About 1.4 billion gallons is withdrawn from its aquifers each day. Increasing withdrawal of ground water has created or intensified several problems such as declining water levels, development of large cones of depression, saltwater intrusion, spreading of ground-water contamination, and land subsidence. The U.S. Geological Survey has begun a comprehensive study that will define the geology, hydrology, and geochemistry of the aquifer system. The effects of future utilization of the aquifer system will be determined and alternative plans for water withdrawal will be evaluated through computer simulation modeling. In Johnson County, on the west flank of the basin, the lower Upper Cretaceous strata are included in the Frontier Formation and the overlying Cody Shale. The Frontier Formation and some of the laterally equivalent strata in the Rocky Mountain region contain major resources of oil and gas. These rocks also include commercial deposits of bentonite. \r\n\r\nOutcrop sections, borehole logs, and core studies of the lower Upper Cretaceous rocks near Osage, in Weston County, and Kaycee, in Johnson County, supplement comparative studies of the fossils in the formations. Fossils of Cenomanian, Turonian, and Coniacian Age are abundant at these localities and form sequences of species which can be used for the zonation and correlation of strata throughout the region. \r\n\r\nThe Belle Fourche Shale near Osage is about 115 m (meters) thick and consists mainly of noncalcareous shale, which was deposited in offshore-marine environments during Cenomanian time. These strata are overlain by calcareous shale and limestone of the Greenhorn Formation. In this area, the Greenhorn is about 85 m thick and accumulated in offshore, open-marine environments during the Cenomanian and early Turonian. The Carlile Shale overlies the Greenhorn and is composed of, from oldest to youngest, the Pool Creek Member, Turner Sandy Member, and Sage Breaks Member. In boreholes, the Pool Creek Member is about 23 m thick and consists largely of shale. The member was deposited in offshoremarine environments in Turonian time. These rocks are disconformably overlain by the Turner Sandy Member, a sequence about 50 m thick of interstratified shale, siltstone, and sandstone. The Turner accumulated during the Turonian in several shallow-marine environments. Conformably overlying the Turner is the slightly calcareous shale of the Sage Breaks Member, which is about 91 m thick. The Sage Breaks was deposited mostly during Coniacian time in offshore-marine environments. \r\n\r\nIn Johnson County, the Frontier Formation consists of the Belle Fourche Member and the overlying Wall Creek Member, and is overlain by the Sage Breaks Member of the Cody Shale. Near Kaycee, the Belle Fourche Member is about 225 m thick and is composed mostly of interstratified shale, siltstone, and sandstone. These strata are mainly of Cenomanian age and were deposited largely in shallow-marine environments. In this area, the Belle Fourche Member is disconformably overlain by the Wall Creek Member, which is about 30 m thick and grades from interlaminated shale and siltstone at the base of the member to sandstone at the top. The Wall Creek accumulated during Turonian time in shallowmarine environments. These beds are overlain by the Sage Breaks Member of the Cody. Near Kaycee, the Sage Breaks is about 65 m thick and consists mainly of shale which was deposited in offshoremarine environments during Turonian and Coniacian time. \r\n\r\nLower Upper Cretaceous formations on the east side of the Powder River Basin can be compared with strata of the same age on the west side of the basin. The Belle Fourche Shale at Osage is represented near Kaycee by most of the Belle Fourche Member of the Frontier. The Greenhorn at Osage contrasts with beds of similar age in the Belle Fourche at Kaycee. An upper part of the Greenhorn Formation, the Pool Creek Member of the Carlile Shale, and the basal beds of the Turner Sandy Member of the Carlile, in Weston County, are represented by a disconformity at the base of the Wall Creek Member of the Frontier in southern Johnson County. A middle part of the Turner in the vicinity of Osage is the same age as the Wall Creek Member near Kaycee. Plans to recharge the local aquifers with imported surface water would raise the water table and intercept that nitrogen. This study was made to describe the distribution of inorganic nitrogen and other chemical constituents and nitrogen-using bacteria in the unsaturated zone, to relate nitrogen occurrences, in a general way, to present and historical land use, and to attempt to predict nitrogen concentrations in ground water after recharge. Some generalized correlations between nitrogen occurrence and land use were observed. In 11 of 13 test holes, the maximum nitrate-nitrogen (NO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup>-N) concentrations occurred within 10 feet of the surface, suggesting that the major source of nitrogen is from the surface at these sites. Test holes were ranked according to maximum NO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup>-N in the top 10 feet, total NO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup>-N in the top 10 feet, and total NO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup>-N in the top 40 feet. In all three rankings, the top seven test holes were the same--five in or near present or historical agricultural areas (primarily citrus groves), one in a feedlot, and one adjacent to an abandoned sewage-treatment plant. Two test holes in historically uninhabited areas ranked lowest. The control test hole  in an uninhabited area ranked high in geometric mean of ammonium-nitrogen concentration (NH<sub>4</sub><sup>+</sup>-N), suggesting that present in freshly weathered granite. The geometric means of NH<sub>4</sub><sup>+</sup>-N concentrations in six of eight citrus-related test holes were significantly lower than in the control hole, suggesting that irrigation in citrus groves may have created conditions favoring nitrification of the primary NH<sub>4</sub><sup>+</sup>-N. Rank correlation analyses between various measurements in test holes showed that high NO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup>-N concentrations tend to occur with high specific conductance and chloride concentrations in soil extracts. If recharge is carried out as planned, assuming complete mixing of the recharge water and interstitial pore water in the top 20 feet of the saturated zone, NO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup>-N concentrations in water at the top of the saturated zone may exceed 10 milligrams per liter in seven areas studied. Concentrations could reach as high as 66 milligrams per liter in the worst case projected. The highest concentrations may be found in three areas that are now, or were recently, citrus groves.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/wri8048","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District","usgsCitation":"Klein, J.M., and Bradford, W.L., 1980, Distribution of nitrate in the unsaturated zone, Highland-East Highlands area, San Bernardino County, California: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 80-48, v, 70 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri8048.","productDescription":"v, 70 p.","numberOfPages":"78","costCenters":[{"id":154,"text":"California Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":157990,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/wri8048.png"},{"id":269696,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1980/0048/WRIR80-48.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","city":"San Bernardino County","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -117.8026,33.871 ], [ -117.8026,35.8093 ], [ -114.1308,35.8093 ], [ -114.1308,33.871 ], [ -117.8026,33.871 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a6fe4b07f02db64096a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Klein, John M.","contributorId":27036,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Klein","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":199149,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bradford, Wesley L.","contributorId":95451,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bradford","given":"Wesley","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":199150,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Western United States. Although the milling process yields a uranium concentrate, the large volume of tailings remaining contains about 85 percent of the radioactivity originally associated with the ore. By virtue of the physical and chemical processing of the ore and the redistribution of the contained radionuclides at the Earth's surface, these tailings constitute a technologically enhanced source of natural radiation exposure. Sources of potential human radiation exposure from uranium mill tailings include the emanation of radon gas, the transport of particles by wind and water, and the transport of soluble radionuclides, seeping from disposal areas, by ground water. Due to the 77,000 year half-life of thorium-230, the parent of radium-226, the environmental effects associated with radionuclides contained in these railings must be conceived of within the framework of geologic processes operating over geologic time. The magnitude of erosion of cover materials and tailings and the extent of geochemical mobilization of the contained radionuclides to the atmosphere and hydrosphere should be considered in the evaluation of the potential, long-term consequences of all proposed uranium mill tailings management plans.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Dept. of the Interior, Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/cir814","usgsCitation":"Landa, E., 1980, Isolation of uranium mill tailings and their component radionuclides from the biosphere; some earth science perspectives: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 814, iii, 32 p. :ill., map ;26 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir814.","productDescription":"iii, 32 p. :ill., map ;26 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":124670,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1980/0814/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":30808,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1980/0814/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9fe4b07f02db660e2e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Landa, Edward","contributorId":100368,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Landa","given":"Edward","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147523,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

In order to ascertain the viability of a proposed waste isolation site, it is necessary to study its geology without extensive drilling that might destroy its structural integrity. Hole-to-surface and hole-to-hole geophysical measurements can be useful in supplementing geologic data obtained from a few drill holes and can be used to aid the interpretation of surface geophysical measurements. The study presented in this paper was conducted at Salt Valley, Utah to test the feasibility of using hole-to-surface direct-current resistivity measurements to detect geologic inhomogeneities in evaporites. These measurements show the following:<br>(1) It is feasible to make hole-to-surface resistivity measurements over evaporites. However, near-surface steel casing can make it difficult to quantitatively analyze the field data with present interpretation techniques. Future investigations should include theoretical studies to solve interpretation problems when steel casing is in the hole and the mud is a high-conductivity brine.<br>(2) A comparison of measurements made from the three different source drill holes shows that the halite acts as an electrical insulator and most of the current emitted from the source is contained in the caprock.<br>(3) A comparison of measurements made parallel and perpendicular to the valley walls shows that there are more variations in the halitecaprock&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; interface perpendicular than parallel to the axis of the Salt Valley anticline.<br>(4) Structurally complex interbeds within the salt may cause differences in the current distribution measured at the surface from current sources buried at different depths.<br>(5) Total field mapping would be more useful than the single-component data that were collected in this study.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr80981","usgsCitation":"Daniels, J.J., and Scott, J.H., 1980, Hole-to-surface resistivity measurements at Salt Valley, Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-981, 35 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr80981.","productDescription":"35 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":403965,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0981/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":142157,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0981/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","otherGeospatial":"Salt Valley","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -109.80903625488281,\n              38.852542390364235\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.65385437011719,\n              38.852542390364235\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.65385437011719,\n              38.93858247125804\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.80903625488281,\n              38.93858247125804\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.80903625488281,\n              38.852542390364235\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a54e4b07f02db62bfab","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Daniels, Jeffrey J.","contributorId":87938,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Daniels","given":"Jeffrey","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157841,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Scott, James H.","contributorId":73579,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Scott","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157840,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
