Although stream-discharge data have been collected for many years and at many points, relatively little accurate information on the physical features of the areas drained has been compiled. The floods resulted from runoff from warm, moderately heavy rain that continued most of the week, augmented by runoff from the rapid melting of a near-record snowpack that extended to low elevations. New record peak flows occurred at many gaging stations which have been operated continuously for 20 to 50 years and at on which has been operated since 1907. At least two deaths were attributable to the floods, and property damage in the four hardest hit counties were estimate by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to be $21 The assemblages critical to determining the conditions of metamorphism are (1) chlorite-epidote-hematite-pumpellyite-prehnite; actinolite-chlorite-hematite-pumpellyite-stilpnomelane; (2) actinolite-chlorite-epidote-stilpnomelane; chlorite-epidote-pumpellyite-stilpnomelane; chlorite-epidote-hematite-pumpellyite; (3) chlorite-epidote-hematite-pumpellyite-stilpnomelane; chlorite-epidote-pumpellyite-prehnite; and (4) chlorite-epidote-prehnite; chlorite-prehnite-stilpnomelane; chlorite-epidote-pumpellyite-prehnite. One pumpellyite-bearing rock from western Newfoundland shows a later vein of analcime-calcite. All the assemblages also include quartz, sphene, calcite, K-mica, and albite.</p><p class=\"chapter-para\">Analysis of the mineral assemblages by the Schreinemakers method for the phases actinolite-chlorite-epidote-hematite-prehnite-pumpellyite-stilpnomelane shows that the different localities can be assigned different metamorphic grades. Though the detailed results of the Schreinemakers analysis depend on the assumed source of ferric iron in epidote, the major conclusions are not affected. The thermodynamic role of calcite is more problematic, but it appears that CO<sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;</span>did not behave as a boundary-value component during metamorphism. If calcite is treated as an excess phase, the Schreinemakers bundle decomposes to a net in a multisystem. Plotted on such a net, the various localities again occupy different parts signifying different metamorphic grades.</p><p class=\"chapter-para\">The occurrence of pumpellyite-bearing assemblages on the west flank of the northern Appalachian metamorphic belt might suggest that these assemblages, contrary to the ideas of Miyashiro and of others, do not indicate high-pressure and low-temperature type of metamorphism. These assemblages, however, are compatible with an alternative interpretation as remnants of a high-pressure, low-temperature Taconic metamorphic regime, whose imprint within most of the Appalachian metamorphic belt has been obliterated by later events. It attains a maximum thickness of 750 ft. at the southeastern edge of the Appalachian coal field and thins northwestward by the tonguing out of lower beds and by the truncation of upper beds at an overlying unconformity.</p><p>Sandstone, which composes about 70 percent of the formation, occurs in lenticular bodies that have two distinct distribution patterns—lobate and linear—of contrasting orientation and composition. The lobate bodies are elongate to the northwest and contain sandstone having a quartz content of about 50 to 65 percent. Within a lobe, thickness lines show a northwestward bifurcating pattern similar to the pattern of channels in an alluvial distributary system of a modern delta. Laterally, lobate bodies merge to form northwestward-thinning sandstone wedges as much as 300 ft. thick. The linear pattern is shown by 3- to 8-mi.-wide sandstone lenses that extend north-northeast for about 45 mi. They are near the distal ends of the lobate sandstone and consist of 0 to 140 ft. of relatively pure quartzose sandstone. The well-washed character and orientation of the linear bodies, normal to the lobate bodies, indicate a barrier-bar origin.</p><p>These sediment distribution patterns show that the Pocahontas Formation was deposited mainly in deltaic complexes built out from the southeast during marine regression to the northwest. The model simulates the interrelations among ground water and surface water including reservoirs, losses, and transmountain diversions, utilizing various water-distribution rules. The model was used to analyze 24 water-management plans designed to reduce shortages in the irrigation supply. One management plan simulated salvage of water from phreatophyte evapotranspiration, different reservoir operation regulations, use of imported ground and surface water, a new reservoir, additional ground-water use, and application of excess streamflow. The resulting annual dependable supply was increased from 610,000 acre-feet to 870,000 acre-feet in relation to an annual demand of 1,100,000 acre-feet. The hydrometric programme in the United States consists of 8400 full-record stations and an equal number of partial-record stations operated by 47 district offices. A sampling of four districts selected to represent the range of hydrometric conditions in the country indicated that costs (in 1972) for installation of a full-record station intended for indefinite terms of operation ranged between $5000 and $10,000. Short-term stations range between $2500 and $4000. Costs of operation for full-record stations ranged between $800 and $1250 per year, whereas office costs for processing the record ranged between $500 and $1250. A very considerable emphasis is given in the programme to partial-record stations designed to furnish specific information for floods and droughts. Annual costs in terms of full-record stations range from only 5 per cent for a low-flow station, 15–20 per cent for a crest-stage record, to 50 per cent for a flood-hydrogram station. Publication costs average about $7 per page. This small sample survey shows considerable variations and even greater variations might be expected internationally. In any case, differences in costs nationally or internationally invite proper inquiry as to causes in the search for economy.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Very little is mentioned, however, on possible interferences. In an attempt to use this technique for the determination of selenium in natural waters, interferences were found. The most serious interference occurred when arsenic was present. As little as 5 μg of arsenic/l suppressed the formation of selenium hydride. Because arsenic may be present with selenium in natural waters, the above method was abandoned in favor of the following atomic absorption spectrophotometric method for the determination of both inorganic and organically bound selenium. Organic selenium compounds, if present, are first decomposed by digestion with potassium permanganate in hot acid solution. The solution is then made basic and the solution evaporated to dryness in the presence of calcium chloride which prevents the loss of selenate during the evaporation. Hydrochloric acid is added to the residue to reduce the selenate to selenite. Quantitative reduction is obtained without loss of selenium by controlling the temperature, time, and acid concentration. It should be emphasized that the selenium must be in the selenite form prior to its final reduction. The selenium is finally liberated from 6M hydrochloric acid solution with stannous chloride and the selenium hydride vapor subsequently removed from solution by aeration and swept by a flow of nitrogen into a hydrogen flame where it is determined by atomic absorption at 196.0 nm.
