The samples were collected during reconnaissance geochemical studies as part of the U.S. Geological Survey's Alaskan Mineral Resource Assessment Program. Included are estimates of low-flow frequency and flow duration at 7 gaging stations, low-flow frequency characteristics at 23 low-flow partial-record stations and 78 miscellaneous sites, and a list of base-flow discharge measurements at 29 miscellaneous sites. Equations are provided to estimate low-flow characteristics at ungaged sites and at sites where one base-flow discharge measurement is available. The equations were determined from multiple-regression analyses that related low-flow characteristics at gaging stations and low-flow partial-record stations to basin characteristics. The standard error of estimate is provided for each method of estimating the annual minimum 7-day mean flow below which the flow will fall on the average of once in 2 years and once in 10 years. Standard error provides the user with the expected degree of accuracy for each method. The earlier work consisted mainly of data collection at a few spring and river sites at intermittent intervals with the exception of a statewide groundwater study made during 1910-12 (Matson and Sanford, 1913).</p><p>Since 1930, when an office was established for surface-water studies and in 1938 for ground-water studies in Florida, practically all of the water resources investigations made by the U.S. Geological Survey have been in cooperation with state and local agencies.</p><p>The bibliographic list of publications which follows is arranged alphabetically by senior author.</p><p>The publications are also indexed by geographic area and by subject. In the Pacific, State jurisdiction extends for 3 geographical (nautical) miles (5.56 km) from the coastline. The OCS, which comprises the submerged lands of the Continental Shelf seaward of the California, Oregon, and Washington State boundaries, is under Federal jurisdiction. Activities occurring offshore must be supplied and supported from land, and the onshore activities required may have significant effects on the communities in which they occur. For example, oil and gas production might involve the expansion of existing transportation and processing facilities and the construction of new ones, and it might trigger an influx of workers and change employment patterns. Predominant rock types in the basin include granitic rocks of the Idaho batholith and basalt flows of the Columbia River Basalt Group. Waters from thermal springs in the basin, temperatures of which range from 34 to 86 degrees Celsius, are sodium bicarbonate types and are slightly alkaline. Dissolved-solids concentrations range from 173 to 470 milligrams per liter. Reservoir temperatures determined from the sodium-potassium-calcium and silicic acid-corrected silica geothermometers range from 53 to 143 degrees Celsius. Tritium, present in concentrations between 0 and 2 tritium units, indicate sampled thermal waters are at least 100 years old and possibly more than 1,000 years old. Stable isotope data indicate it is unlikely any of the nonthermal waters sampled are representative of precipitation that recharges the thermal springs in the basin. Thermal springs discharged about 5,700 acre-feet of water in 1979. Associated convective heat flux is 1.1x10 to the 7th power calories per second. Dissolved-solids concentrations range from 23 to 2,100 milligrams per liter. Waters having low dissolved-solids concentrations are calcium bicarbonate waters. Sodium, sulfate, and chloride increase as mineralization increases. Iron, aluminum, and titanium are higher at some locations than is common in most natural waters. Lead concentrations exceed those desirable in drinking water at some locations in the northern part of the Lower Peninsula. Generalized areal patterns of water quality variation suggest that geology is a primary cause of differences across the State. Examples of chemical associations in water suggest that chemical analyses may be valuable in tracing and identifying mineral deposits.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Included are estimates of low-flow frequency at 10 gaging stations, flow duration at 8 gaging stations, and low-flow frequency characteristics at 13 low-flow partial-record stations and 81 miscellaneous sites. Equations are provided to estimate low-flow characteristics at ungaged sites and at sites where one base-flow discharge measurement is available. The equations were determined from multiple-regression analyses that related low-flow characteristics at gaging stations and low-flow partial-record stations to basin characteristics. The standard error of estimate is provided for each method of estimating the annual minimum 7-day mean flow below which the flow will fall on the average of once in 2 years and once in 10 years. The standard error of estimate for the 7-day 10-year low flow ranged from 9% to 113% depending on the type of data available. Standard error provides the user with the expected degree of accuracy for each method. The purpose of these logging measurements is to provide in-situ physical properties information that is not commercially available on drill hole UE25a-3. Well logs are presented in this paper for dual-detector density, normal resistivity, gamma-ray, neutron-neutron, induced polarization, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. These data are analyzed for correlations with the core lithology. Hole-to-surface measurements made from drill hole UE25a-3 indicate the presence of two resistive bodies at depth. Two of the holes were partially cored. The purpose of the drilling was to obtain information on the thickness, quality, and extent of the coal in the Cretaceous Ferron Sandstone Member of the Mancos Shale, and on the lithology of the surrounding rocks. Core samples were obtained to be used for coal quality and trace element analyses.
