Inventory data from 395 wells were compiled, observation well and rain-gage networks were established and 16 standard complete chemical analyses were made for samples from selected wells. The water resources of the area were overexploited. The chemical quality of the water is generally good. Four aquifer tests were run to determine transmissivity and storage characteristics. The pumping tests show that groundwater occurs under semi-confined leaky-aquifer conditions in the valley fill. Wells drilled in the alluvial fill of the south-central part of the valley have the highest yields. Wells penetrating the limestone and volcanic rocks generally have little or no yield except in fracture zones. Basalt flows occur interbedded with the wadi alluvium at several depths. Cropping out rocks in the Amran Valley range in age from late Jurassic to Holocene. Results of two dye traces indicate that Grove Creek probably is not an effective boundary. Therefore, higher water levels near the reservoir may cause more ground water to move into the mining belt and cause a greater discharge of zinc-laden mine water into Center Creek.</p><p>Ground-water-level measurements and seepage runs on Center Creek indicate a relationship between ground-water levels, mine-water discharge and seepage, and base flow in Center Creek. The U.S. Geological Survey obtained these data for the Soil Conservation Service in a water-quality survey of the watershed from March to August 1979. Past and present surface coal mining is the factor having the greatest impact on water quality in the watershed. The upper reaches of Cypress Creek receive acid-mine drainage from a coal-mine waste slurry during periods of intense rainfall. All the remaining tributaries, except Summer Pecka ditch, drain mined or reclaimed lands. The general water type of Cypress Creek and most of its tributaries is calcium and magnesium sulfate. In contrast, the water type at background site 21 on Summer Pecka ditch is calcium sulfate. Specific conductance ranged from 470 to 4,730 micromhos per centimeter at 25 degrees Celsius, and pH ranged from 1.2 to 8.8. Specific conductance, hardness, and concentrations of major ions and dissolved solids were highest in tributaries affected by mining. The pH was lowest in the same tributaries. Concentrations of iron, manganese, and sulfate in water samples and chlordane, DDT, and PCB 's in streambed samples exceeded water-quality limits set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The still water elevations ranged from about 5 feet above National Geodetic Vertical Datum in sheltered areas to about 7.5 feet in areas subject to wind setup. Storm-tide frequency and records of annual maximum tides at Mobile, Alabama, since 1772, are presented. Offshore winds reached about 160 miles per hour. Geologic and topographic features that control the movement and regional availability of ground water are explained and illustrated. Five aquifer systems beneath the most populous areas are described. Estimates of ground-water yield were determined for the region by using ground-water data for the populated areas and by extrapolating known subsurface conditions and interpreting subsurface conditions from surficial features in the other areas. Area maps of generalized geology, Quaternary sediment thickness, and general availability of ground water are shown. Surface-water resources are summarized by describing how basin characteristics affect the discharge in streams. Seasonal trend of streamflow for three types of streams is described. Regression equations for 4 streamflow characteristics (annual, monthly minimum, and maximum discharge) were obtained by using gaging station streamflow characteristics and 10 basin characteristics. In the 24 regression equations presented, drainage area is the most significant basin characteristic, but 5 others are used. Maps of mean annual unit runoff and minimum unit yield for 7 consecutive days with a recurrence interval of 10 years are shown. Historic discharge data at gaging stations is tabulated and representative low-flow and flood-flow frequency curves are shown. The storm tide went completely across the land between the beach and Mobile Bay throughout much of the area. Most homes on the beach side of Alabama State Highway 180 were completely destroyed, and the highway was washed out in several places. Damage to homes and other structures on the bay side was not as great. Storm-tide frequency and records of annual maximum tides at Mobile, Ala., since 1772, are presented. Offshore winds reached about 160 miles per hour. In 1974, the State of Maine </span><span>Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) adopted a pre</span><span>liminary set of procedures for establishing an index of lake </span><span>trophic status. Also in 1974, this three-year study of </span><span>selected Maine lakes was initiated to evaluate and improve </span><span>this trophic classification system. </span></p><p><span>Analyses of project results led to the following rec-commendations for modifications in Maine's lake-management program. Lake trophic state should be established using a mean annual value of twice monthly observations of chlorophyll a in epilimnetic waters during the open-water season. Actual Trophic State Index (TSI) values for lakes are calculated using the formula: TSI = 77.7 - 27.3 (log annual mean chlorophyll a, in mg/L). In lakes with colors less than or equal to TO platinum-cobalt units, mean annual Secchi disk transparencies may be used for calculation of lake TSI using the formula: TSI = 40.0 + 33.0 (log annual10mean Secchi disk, in meters).</span></p><p><span>Supplemental information recommended for inclusion in the lake management program should include: morphological, hydrologic, and geologic data; baseline profile water-quality surveys; and benthic invertebrate, vegetation, and cultural surveys. Another recommendation is to change DEP's method of calculating the mean annual runoff for a lake drainage basin to an empirical formula based on drainage area characteristics. This resulted in more accurate estimations of mean annual hydraulic retention times for lakes. Many of these parameters recommended for inclusion in the lake management program will allow comparisons with future surveys to determine the impacts of cultural development on Maine lakes. Only three wells were being used in 1979, two by the community of St. Paul and one by the Coast Guard Loran facility. All wells are in the southeastern part of the island. The island has no established surface drainage, and no springs were found on the eastern part of the island during the survey. Drainage of ground-water from the island is assumed to be by seepage through the sandy deposits along the east coast and possibly by undersea discharge elsewhere on the island. On the basis of present well yields, amount of freshwater inferred to be present below the water table, and potential recharge from precipitation, it is concluded that it should be possible to design a well field in the southeastern part of the island that could yield more than a million gallons per day without danger of inducing saline water into the well field. The water is of good chemical quality. Ground-water levels in the hills adjacent to the reservoir will rise when the impoundment is completed. One of the problems is that the proposed site of Prosperity Reservoir is a few miles upstream from the lead-zinc mining area known as the Oronogo-Duenweg belt. In this belt transmissivities are variable but appear to be higher than they are in the immediate area of the reservoir.</p><p>Grove Creek lies down-gradient from the reservoir area and separates it from the mining belt. A model study indicates that inflow from the proposed reservoir to the water table could cause water level rises varying from about 20 feet near the reservoir to 0.5 to 1.0 foot in the southern part of Grove Creek drainage basin. These rises will cause significant changes to the natural ground-water flow system. Increased ground-water elevations in the reservoir area could result in increased ground-water gradients and discharge to Grove and Center Creeks. The increase in ground-water discharge to Grove Creek, and in turn Center Creek, will have the beneficial effect of diluting mine-water discharge from the Oronogo-Duenweg belt during periods of low flow.</p><p>However, if Grove Creek does not act as an effective drain and if conduits extend beneath Grove Creek to transfer the increased water available to the Oronogo-Duenweg belt, the flow regimen could change in the mining belt west of Grove Creek increasing mine-water discharge to Center Creek downstream from the reservoir.</p><p>Bedrock in the area is Mississippian limestone, the deeply solutioned formation that contained the ore deposits. The limestone in the mining&nbsp;district was greatly altered by solution prior to ore deposition while the limestone in the area of the reservoir was altered less. The extent of the alteration is related to the aquifer characteristics in that high and low values of transmissivity and storage coefficient correspond to greatly altered brecciated rocks in the mining district and less altered, less brecciated rocks in the reservoir area, respectively.</p><p>The authors suggest that an ancestral east-flowing White River drained the area about Joplin in Late Mississippian time. This is based on the configuration of the contact between Meramecian and Osagean rocks of Mississippian age. A high topographic area existed in the region about Joplin in which the water table stood 200 feet below the land surface when sinkholes and caverns of that depth were formed. The large number of Pennsylvanian-filled sinkholes in the Joplin area and the smaller number to the east suggest a higher land surface to the west than that to the east. Average annual water levels in the Big Sioux aquifer and base flow discharge of the Big Sioux River near Brookings for 1970 through 1976 were used in the model. The model-computed water levels were within a few feet of the actual annual average water levels and the computed annual average base flow was 66 cubic feet per second compared to the actual base flow of 58 cubic feet per second.</p><p>The computer model was used to model transient conditions by simulating water levels and base flow from April through August 1976 and comparing the results with actual data. Evapotranspiration and pumpage changes were made for each month. There was no recharge from precipitation during the test period.</p><p>Several different computer simulations were made using different estimates of hydrologic parameters and conditions. Specific yield was increased from 10 to 15 percent which resulted in a much greater base flow for each month. Effective depth of evapotranspiration was changed from 5 to 10 feet which resulted in a very large decrease in base flow. A computer simulation made without irrigation pumpage resulted in an increase in the base flow from 0.66 to 9 cubic feet per second for August 1976 in the Big Sioux River near Brookings. The actual base flow for August 1976 was .01 cubic foot per second.</p><p>A water budget showed 22.2 inches of precipitation (average annual), 0.65 inch of surface runoff, 1.06 inches of ground-water outflow (base flow to river, 1970-76), and 20.49 inches of evapotranspiration.</p><p>The water from the Big Sioux aquifer is a calcium bicarbonate type and specific conductance ranged from 407 to 1,790 micromhos per centimeter at 25°C. The water is generally very hard, having a mean of 454 milligrams per liter of hardness.</p><p>A model simulation using all the pumpage that would be allowed by irrigation permits approved as of February 1979 simulated the withdrawal of 43,900 acre-feet of water for about 4 months during which time there was no recharge from precipitation. The general hydrogeology of the area around the lake was defined and the hydrology of the lake was studied in detail.</p>\n<p>There are two aquifer systems in the Cedar Lake area, and in general, throughout eastern Wisconsin. The shallow aquifer system is composed of unconsolidated glacial drift of Quaternary age and consolidated bedrock of Silurian age. Cedar Lake is located in a local recharge area within this system. The saturated thicknesses of the glacial drift and Silurian dolomite beneath the lake are approximately 100 feet and 500 feet, respectively. This aquifer system is separated from an underlying aquifer system by a layer of shale approximately '200 feet thick that forms an effective barrier to water movement. The deep aquifer system is composed of dolomites and sandstones of Ordovician and Cambrian age whose composite thickness is 600 to 650 feet.</p>\n<p>A water budget was prepared to quantify the components of the hydrologic system of Cedar Lake. Inflow to the lake averaged approximately ^5 inches per water year for the 2-year period October 197^ through September 1976. Inflow consisted of precipitation on the lake surface (28 inches), groundwater seepage to the lake (2 inches), and overland flow (15 inches) to the lake. Outflow averaged approximately U9 inches per year for the same 2- year period. Outflow consisted of evaporation (31 inches) from the lake surface and ground-water seepage from the lake (18 inches).</p>\n<p>A volume of water equivalent to that needed to raise the lake level 1*7 inches was pumped from the shallow aquifer system into Cedar Lake between February 1 and September 30, 1977. The water budget for the lake during this period indicated that approximately 90 percent of pumped water was either recycled from the lake to the well or otherwise lost as seepage from the lake.</p>\n<p>Selected physical and chemical characteristics of the lake water were measured periodically between October 197^ and September 1977- The water temperature ranged between 26&deg;C in August to approximately 2&deg;C in December during each year of the study. The dissolved-oxygen concentration of the water ranged from 13 milligrams per liter at the time ice cover first developed in December to h milligrams per liter at the time ice cover broke up the following April. The total nitrogen concentration of the water varied from 1.0 milligrams per liter during winter to 0.5 milligrams per liter during summer. The total phosphorus concentration of the water was fairly uniform throughout the year, averaging 0.01 milligrams per liter.</p>\n<p>The phytoplankton population was sampled periodically. The total phytoplankton count was small during winter, generally less than 250 cells per milliliter. These phytoplankton were composed of euglenoids, diatoms, green algae, and blue-green algae. The count increased to 50,000 to 100,000 cells per milliliter during summer. One or two species of blue-green algae dominated during these times.</p>\n<p>There were no identifiable changes in measured physical and chemical characteristics of lake water during sustained pumping of ground water into the lake, nor were there identifiable changes in the number or makeup of the phytoplankton community.
