A method is described for estimating background phosphorus concentration in lakes of the Puget Sound lowland, Washington. Using a mass-balance ' Vollenweider-type ' model, phosphorus loadings were calculated from present-day phosphorus concentrations measured in lake water and from easily measured physical characteristics for 24 lakes in undeveloped, or insignificantly developed, watersheds. Phosphorus loading from forest (undeveloped) land was derived for each lake as the difference between the calculated phosphorus loading directly to the lake 's surface and loading by bulk precipitation (estimated from other studies). Forest-land loading to each lake was converted to the yield (mass per unit area) of the forested part of the watershed. The phosphorus yield from forest land was related to annual runoff, and the regression equation expressing this relationship explained 73% of the sample variance. By applying that regression equation to the appropriate annual-runoff data, the yield of phosphorus from forest land can be estimated for any lake in the study area. Phosphorus loading from forested land then can be added to direct loading by bulk precipitation to estimate background phosphorus loading for each lake. By applying the mass-balance model to calculated background loadings, background total-phosphorus concentration can also be calculated for all lakes in the study area that have stable thermal stratification during the summer. The standard error of estimate for calculated background loadings and concentrations averages about 25%. In Upper Klamath Lake, average accumulation rates range from 0.9 mm/yr at a site in Howard Bay to 12.5 mm/yr at a location near the input from Agency Lake. Divers collected cores, approximately 50 cm long, from eight locations in Upper Klamath Lake and from one location in Lake Euwana; coring sites were chosen to represent a variety of sedimentary environments. Plots of excess 210Pb activity versus depth show that a sediment-mixing layer, ranging from 5 to 20 cm in thickness, is below the sediment-water interface at all coring locations; the mixing is due to biological activity, wave and current action, and gas generation. Two cores show changes in accumulation rates during the past 100-150 years that are probably related to changes in land use. X-radiographs indicate the presence of pumice layers and allow assessment of biological activity; these two kinds of information are important to the interpretation of 210Pb activity data. Trace-metal contents were determined to establish baseline information. The eight cores from Upper Klamath Lake contain much lower concentrations of all metals measured (Cd, Cu, Cr, Fe, Pb, Mn, and Zn) than are found in other lacustrine environments. The core taken from Lake Euwana contained higher concentrations of metals than the cores collected from Upper Klamath Lake.

This study was initiated in response to a concern that possible rapid accumulation of sediments in Upper Klamath Lake poses a threat to the lake's ability to support economically critical activities. A regression model, relating flood-peak discharge to concurrent rainfall and antecedent soil moisture conditions, was used to simulate 67-year records of annual peak discharges. Flood-frequency characteristics were determined for the simulated annual peaks and for the observed annual peaks at each of 22 gaging stations. Drainage area, bank-full channel conveyance, and percentage of urban development were used as independent variables; and weighted flood-frequency discharges were used as dependent variables in the multiple regression analysis.
\n
Relationships applicable to unregulated streams were developed for predicting floods with recurrence intervals of 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, and 500 years. Much of the latter increase is due to depletion by agricultural use and irrigation return water with salts leached from soils under cultivation.

Forty sites in three agricultural areas--Fort Mojave, Bard Valley, and Palo Verde Valley--were sampled to describe the dissolved-solids concentrations in return flows. Emphasis was on Palo Verde Valley.

In the Fort Mojave area, the dissolved-solids concentration of Colorado River water was about 700 mg/L, while the concentration in water at the tile-drain convergence averaged about 2,500 mg/L. In the closed sump that presently receives all irrigation return, concentrations ranged from 812 to 1,760 mg/L.

In Bard Valley, water diverted from the river had an annual mean dissolved-solids concentration of about 835 mg/L. During the study, concentrations in the two main drains carrying irrigation return water ranged from 953 to 1,290 mg/L.

Selected drains in Palo Verde Valley were sampled several times to determine dissolved-solids loads from subareas within the valley. The effects of this additional stress on the ground-water system, particularly on the environmentally sensitive Barka, Slough, are of concern in the basin.

Expectations of the developer are that about 6,640 acre-feet per year of additional consumptive ground-water use will be required to irrigate an agricultural development of 2,500 acres of vineyards and 1,200 acres of truck-farmed vegetables. This represents an increase in net basin pumpage of about 60 percent. The developer plans to obtain this water from 12 large-diameter irrigation wells in the Harris Canyon area.

Analysis of the potential drawdowns in the vicinity of Barka Slough, by using the Theis nonequilibrium formula, indicates that drawdowns would average 6 feet after 10 years of pumping and would eventually exceed 10 feet. Because the artesian head in the aquifer that supplies the slough is generally less than 3 feet above land surface, these declines would probably mean that the wetlands of Barka Slough would disappear.

An empirical relation, based on historical records of base flow in San Antonio Creek and net pumpage in the basin, also indicates that the additional irrigation withdrawals would cause base flow in San Antonio Creek to cease.

Both of these analyses consider the effects of only this particular agricultural development, which would be in addition to any decline caused by other increases in pumpage in the basin.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri8095","usgsCitation":"Mallory, M.J., 1980, Potential effects of increased ground-water pumpage on Barka Slough, San Antonio Creek Valley, Santa Barbara County, California: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 80-95, iv, 16 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri8095.","productDescription":"iv, 16 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":159252,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1980/0095/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":359411,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1980/0095/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Santa Barbara County","otherGeospatial":"Barka Slough, San Antonio Creek valley","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b15e4b07f02db6a50c9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mallory, Michael J.","contributorId":59408,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mallory","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":199992,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Complex circulation patterns occur near the bay mouth in an area where there is (1) a change in thalweg alinement of the bay, (2) an intersection of three major ship channels, and (3) submergent and emergent dredged material located adjacent to each of the channels. The disturbance or disturbances appear to have culminated at different times in different parts of the region, ranging from 57 m.y. ago in the eastern San Gabriel Mountains to about 70 m.y. ago in the southern Mojave Desert.

The region can be subdivided into three parts on the basis of potassium-argon dating: (1) An inner area of anomalous ages in which the rocks yield apparent potassium-argon ages that indicate complete or nearly complete resetting of the isotopic system. (2) An outer area in which the rocks yield apparent ages that are, or approach, emplacement ages. (3) A zone separating these two areas from which rocks yield discordant apparent ages on coexisting mineral pairs. This discordant zone varies in width from about 6 to 12 km and grades inward to rocks reset to the degree that they yield concordant potassium-argon apparent ages on coexisting mineral pairs and outward toward rocks that yield near-concordant apparent ages. Rocks from the center and the inner parts of the discordant zone yield the most discordant apparent ages.

Contouring of the apparent ages defines the extent of the reset region that occurs on both sides of the San Andreas fault. The apparent ages can be contoured across the fault, although the position of the fault is well defined by abrupt deflection of the contours parallel to the fault. The reverse fault bounding the north side of the San Bernardino Mountains mayor may not be reflected by offset contours; correlation of possible offset features across the fault is uncertain. Several northwest-trending faults on the Mojave Desert strongly disrupt the contours but do not show the right-lateral displacements that have been attributed to them on the basis of apparent offsets of geologic features. These faults may have a component of vertical movement, and it is not known what effect this might have on the contours; even a small amount could be profound.

The cause of the isotopic disturbance is not well understood, as the area of most complete resetting does not appear to be coincident with any single batholithic mass. The apparent-age contours cross the boundaries of individual plutons, and the configuration of the contours shows no apparent relation to the shapes of plutons or groups of plutons. Even though there does appear to be a lack of correlation between individual plutons or batholith-size collections of plutons, this lack of correlation may be more apparent than real. It is possible that some of the plutons within the area of anomalous ages are part of an extensive batholithic mass of which only the uppermost part is exposed.

An alternative interpretation of the anomalous ages is that a continuing post-emplacement heat source generated by continued under thrusting of the Pacific plate beneath North America caused the region to remain at elevated temperatures such that argon retention by minerals datable by potassium-argon methods was not possible for some time after pluton emplacement. As suggested by Coney and Reynolds (1977), possibly the angle of underthrusting was shallower than when the Transverse Range plutons were emplaced.

Locally, the youngest ages show a spatial relation to the Vincent thrust fault and its correlatives. If this fault is the cause of the region-wide resetting, it has to have extended under most of the western part of southern California.

The configuration of the anomalous-age zone is roughly coincident with the position of the Transverse Ranges, the recently discovered southern California uplift, a relatively shallow high-velocity zone in southern California, and the projection of the Murray fracture zone. The eastward extent coincides roughly with the eastern limit of high seismicity in southern California.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/pp1152","usgsCitation":"Miller, F.K., and Morton, D.M., 1980, Potassium-argon geochronology of the eastern Transverse Ranges and southern Mojave Desert, southern California: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1152, Report: 30 p.; 1 Plate: 39.50 × 23.50 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/pp1152.","productDescription":"Report: 30 p.; 1 Plate: 39.50 × 23.50 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":65432,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1152/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":65433,"rank":301,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1152/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":104564,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_4741.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"4741"},{"id":120249,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1152/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"eastern Transverse Ranges and southern Mojave Desert,","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -118.5,\n 35\n ],\n [\n -116,\n 35\n ],\n [\n -116,\n 34\n ],\n [\n -118.5,\n 34\n ],\n [\n -118.5,\n 35\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad5e4b07f02db68397c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Miller, F.
