The earthquake data shown on this map and listed in table 1 are a list of earthquakes that were originally used in preparing the Seismic Risk Studies in the United States in the United States (Algermissen, 1969) which have been recompiled and updated through 1977. These data have been reexamined which resulted in some revisions of epicenters and intensities as well as assignment of intensities to earthquakes that previously had none assigned. Intensity values were updated from new and additional data sources that were not available at the time of original compilation. Some epicenters were relocated on the basis of new information. The data shown in table 1 are estimates of the most accurate epicenter, magnitude, and intensity of each earthquake, on the basis of historical and current information. Some of the aftershocks from large earthquakes are listed but are incomplete in many instances, especially for ones that occurred before seismic instruments were in univeral usage.

The study was also designed to evaluate the effectiveness of different erosion-control measures in reducing sediment discharge. Although highway construction increased suspended-sediment discharges from two to four-fold, the rate of sediment discharge quickly returned to pre-construction levels when construction ended. The most effective sediment control evaluated was offstream ponds, which were designed to trap and store sediment laden water from the construction area. The offstream ponds trapped about 70 percent of the sediment that reached them during most storms. Seeding and mulching generally reduced sediment loads about 20 percent. Rock dams and bales reduced loads about 5 percent. An onstream pond, constructed on a large stream below the construction area, reduced sediment loads about 80 percent. results between the quantitative method and the semiquantitative six-step optical-emission spectrographic method commonly shows significantly lower values for the semiquantitative method. The lower values are most obvious for splits from the same samples of fine-grained organic-rich rocks where the concentrations of the metals chromium, nickel, zinc, vanadium, and molybdenum are greater than about 200 ppm (parts per million). Samples compared are Paleozoic marine rocks from the Western United States; they include the Permian Phosphoria Formation (Idaho, Montana, Utah, Wyoming), Mississippian Chainman Shale (Nevada and Utah), Mississippian Heath Formation (Montana), Mississippian Doughnut Formation (Utah), Devonian Woodruff Formation (Nevada), and Ordovician Vinini Formation (Nevada).
The semiquantitative method consistently underestimates the concentration of the five metals studied by a factor of 1.7 to 2.7 and, thus, cannot be considered reliable for determining the concentration of metals in these rocks if the reported semiquantitative values exceed about 100 ppm. It is noteworthy that the most comprehensive analytical and statistical studies of metal concentrations in black shales of the United States have used the semiquantitative six-step optical-emission method of analysis.

The strongly implicit procedure (SIP) numerical method is used to solve the set of simultaneous equations. New data processing techniques and program input and output options are emphasized. The quifer system to be modeled may be heterogeneous and anisotropic, and may include both artesian and water-table conditions. Systems which consist of well defined alternating layers of highly permeable and poorly permeable material may be represented by a sequence of equations for two dimensional flow in each of the highly permeable units. Boundaries where head or flux is user-specified may be irregularly shaped. The program also allows the user to represent streams as limited-source boundaries when the streamflow is small in relation to the hydraulic stress on the system. The data-processing techniques relating to ' cube ' input and output, to swapping of layers, to restarting of simulation, to free-format NAMELIST input, to the details of each sub-routine 's logic, and to the overlay program structure are discussed. The program is capable of processing large models that might overflow computer memories with conventional programs. Detailed instructions for selecting program options, for initializing the data arrays, for defining ' cube ' output lists and maps, and for plotting hydrographs of calculated and observed heads and/or drawdowns are provided. Output may be restricted to those nodes of particular interest, thereby reducing the volumes of printout for modelers, which may be critical when working at remote terminals. ' Cube ' input commands allow the modeler to set aquifer parameters and initialize the model with very few input records. Appendixes provide instructions to compile the program, definitions and cross-references for program variables, summary of the FLECS structured FORTRAN programming language, listings of the FLECS and FORTRAN source code, and samples of input and output for example simulations. One successful case of dispute avoidance was in the conversion of an abandoned railroad right-of-way to a linear park in Columbia, Missouri. The potential disputes in this case were twofold: the first centered on the question of ownership of the right-of-way where the railroad holds easements; the second was the issue of how the right-of-way would be developed. This second issue was addressed through the use of third party assistance.
A member of the American Arbitration Association and a member of the Heritage Conservation and Recreation Service acted as an outside third party to facilitate negotiations between the city and adjacent landowners. The result of these negotiations is that the proposal to convert the right-of-way to a linear park has met with acceptance and the project to acquire the land is progressing.
In a similar case in Douglas County, Nebraska, third party assistance was not employed and an impasse resulted. Plans to convert the railroad right-of-way have been terminated.

The survey was conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey as part of the Massachusetts Cooperative Marine Geologic Program.
The seismic systems used included a 1Del Norte minisparker and streamer, an Energy International Streamer, and EPC 3200 and 4100 recorders. Navigational control was established by Radar and Loran-C. The Loran-C navigation data were recorded on a Northstar 6000 system.
The purpose of the cruise was to discover the significance and extent of the folded and faulted internal reflections that were first noticed on the esternmost tip of Jeffreys Ledge in line 14 of esternmost tip of Jeffreys Ledge in line 14 of rninisparker data from the 1976 R/V FAY 023 cruise.
Sixteen northwest-trending lines were run off Cape Ann to investigate the deformed reflectors, now thought to represent a moraine formed by readvance of continental ice over the last glacial marine Presurnpscot Formation. Lines north and south of Cape Ann were run to locate the offshore extension of the Clinton-Newbury and Bloody Bluff fault systems.

The Sheffield low-level radioactive-waste disposal site is located on 20 acres of rolling terrain about 3 miles southwest of Sheffield, Illinois. Twenty-one trenches were constructed and filled with radioactive waste from August 1967 through April 1978. Forty-three test wells were installed by the U.S. Geological Survey on and adjacent to the site. Continuous cores were collected from 36 wells to help in defining the subsurface geology. The wells have been used for water sample collection and to monitor water-level changes. A tunnel. 6.5 feet in diameter by 290 feet in length, was constructed beneath four burial trenches to provide access for collection of hydrologic and geologic data.
Pennsylvanian shale and mudstone deposits are overlain by Pleistocene glacial deposits consisting of the Teneriffe Silt, Glasford Formation, Roxana Silt, Peoria Loess, Parkland Sand, Cahokia Alluvium, and Henry Formation. Three till units of the Glasford Formation, the Hulick Till Member, the Radnor Till Member, and Till A have been identified on the site. Stratigraphic position indicates that the Hulick Till Member and Till A are probably variations of the same till. A continuous pebbly sand deposit, classified as part of the Toulon Member, extends across the middle of the site and continues off site on the northeast and southwest corners. Because of its relatively high hydraulic conductivity, this deposit will be a controlling factor in shallow groundwater movement and in any radionuclide migration.
Ground water at the site is derived through infiltration of precipitation and as underflow from adjacent highlands. Precipitation averages 35 inches per year, 1 or 2 inches of which probably recharge the ground water. Runoff is estimated to be 12 to 15 inches per year and evapotranspiration about 20 inches.
The fluctuation of water levels has been about 2.5 feet in hilltop wells, 3.6 feet in sidehill wells, and 5.9 feet in valley wells.
Hydraulic conductivity of the materials comprising the hydrogeologic system vary widely from about 2.8 to 2.8 x 10-6 feet/day. Tritium in ground water near the southeast corner of the site has moved about 25 feet per year since June 1975.

Data presented in tabular form consist of: (1) Estimated daily precipitation at one site (April through October, 1978 and 1979); (2) mean daily streamflow at two sites (December 1977 through September 1979); (3) instantaneous streamflow at two sites along Grange Hall Creek and corresponding cumulative rainfall at one to three sites for 17 storms (April 1, 1978, to August 26, 1979); (4) concentrations of selected major ions, fecal-coliform bacteria, suspended sediment, nutrients, and trace elements at five sites during dry-weather flow, at three sites during rainfall runoff, and at five sites during snowmelt runoff; and (5) concentrations of pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls at two sites during dry-weather flow and rainfall runoff.
