The number of samples from each State are: Pennsylvania, 132; Ohio, 101; Maryland, 25; West Virginia, 254; Virginia, 33; Indiana, 49; Massachusetts, 5; and Rhode Island, 10. The analytic data are filed in the National Coal Resource Data System of the U.S. Geological Survey.</p><p>The U.S. Geological Survey has quantitatively determined 35 major, minor, and trace elements in each sample. Tests were also made for 35 other trace elements using semi-quantitative spectrographic methods. In addition, the Coal Analysis Section of the U.S. Department of Energy has determined proximate and ultimate analyses, 3cu, forms of sulfur, free-swelling indexes, and ash-fusion temperatures on 563 of the 659 samples.</p><p>Comparison of the geometric means of the 644 bituminous coal samples of this report with an additional 968 bituminous coal samples of the eastern United States reported by Swanson and others in 1976 and by Zubovic and others in 1979 is shown in tables 2a-c. As shown by the means for ultimate and proximate analyses, small differences exist between the two sets of data; however, only the moisture and oxygen contents are significantly different. The forms of sulfur, ash-fusion temperature and heat of combustion are similar. The means for the major and minor oxides in ash are similar for SiO<sub>2</sub>, K<sub>2</sub>O, Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>, TiO<sub>2</sub>, MgO, and P<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub> are lower, whereas, MnO is higher in the analyses of the samples of this report. Eighteen of the means for the trace elements in the coal are about equal for the two sets of samples. The references listed are selected in the sense that mainly statistical reports such as the annual Minerals Yearbook of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and many annual and biennial reports of the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys and its predecessor agencies are not included. Also not included are data on many claims about which little more than their locations is known (for example, localities 206 and 208 in Tysdal, 1978 (MF-880A)). These omissions should not be interpreted as a judgement that the claims are not on valid mineral occurrences, but only that there are insufficient data to describe any mineral deposit that might be present. In the subject index, subheadings under Areal Studies provide for a rapid survey of literature pertaining to a particular geographic area. Geographic boundaries are primarily those defined within the confines of the Egyptian Geological Survey's 1:500,000 base-map sheets (see figure 1).<br></p><p>This compilation has been made as part of a program of geological investigations of the energy resources of Egypt conducted cooperatively by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Geological Survey of Egypt for the Government of Egypt and the U.S. Department of Energy. Investigators from several different organizations were in the field shortly after the earthquake recording aftershocks and checking intensities. The data from postal intensity surveys and field personnel are still coming in, and it will be some time before it is all evaluated and analyzed. This preliminary list of the results of our own field investigations is being produced now in order that the information we gathered may be combined with that of other researchers for analysis.</p><p>Our investigation, conducted from July 28 to August 3, was designed to delineate the areal distribution of the intensities and to document the amount and type of damage in the epicentral region. Tentative intensities have been assigned to these reports and they have been plotted in figure 1. However, as more information becomes available from other investigators, some of these values may be changed and other locations may be added. Therefore no attempt has been made to contour the data. A maximum Modified Mercalli intensity of VII was assigned to Maysville, Ky., approximately 50 km north of the epicenter, based on the concentrated chimney and other types of building damage there. Stochastic processes are used to characterize both the spatial and temporal dependencies of seismic occurrences along a fault. Currently, only homogeneous space and time transitions are considered. The resulting process however is evolutionary and depends on the specific sequence of events over a period of time. The model provides estimates on the cumulative activity of a fault over a future time period. In addition, probabilities of occurrences of individual events along a geologic fault at some specified future time are obtained when a descritized time scale is used.
