A digital computer model was used to predict alternatives for future waste loadings on Little Lick and Big Lick Creeks that would be compatible with Indiana stream water-quality standards defined for two critical hydrologic conditions, summer and winter low flows.</p><p>The model parameters included atmospheric reaeration, carbonaceous and nitrogenous biochemical-oxygen demand, and benthic-oxygen demand. The model was calibrated with data collected during three water-quality surveys at low flow. Verification of the model was not possible owing to varied effluent discharge during sampling. During these surveys, in-stream dissolved-oxygen concentration averaged less than 3 milligrams per liter, well below the State minimum requirement of 5.0 milligrams per liter. The model indicated that these low concentrations were caused by high waste loadings, lack of dilution, low reaeration, and benthic-oxygen demand.</p><p>The hypothetical summer waste-assimilation study assumed that future reductions in discharge Loadings would decrease carbonaceous and benthic decay and increase nitrogenous decay. This hypothetical study indicated that projected effluent waste loads that would provide acceptable in-stream dis-solved-oxygen concentrations are highly dependent on rates of nitrification. Ammonia toxicity became the limiting water-quality criterion at low nitrification rates.</p><p>The hypothetical winter waste-assimilation study indicated that projected dissolved-oxygen concentrations in Little Lick and Big Lick Creeks did not fall below the State standard. Owing to a lack of dilution, however, ammonia-nitrogen concentrations would violate in-stream toxicity standards in both Little Lick and Big Lick Creeks. When supporting data from water analyses are available, the value of the cementation exponent m can be determined more precisely. Data for this study were taken from logs of oil-test wells, Amstrat sample studies, drill-stem tests and water test wells in parts of Montana, North and South Dakota, and Wyoming. The preferred resistivity curves for apparent water resistivity (Rwa) analyses are the deeply focused laterolog and the induction log. The standard electric log can be used if the drilling mud is not saturated with salt. The preferred porosity logs are the sonic, sidewall neutron, compensated neutron, and the density logs. Older, uncalibrated neutron curves can be empirically calibrated in some instances, however, resulting porosities are frequently anomalous when compared to those determined from core or modern logs. When apparent water resistivity is determined for many wells, the data can be plotted and contoured to outline areas of recharge, direction of probable ground-water movement, and location and salinity of brine areas. Through 1978, OCS oil and gas leases had yielded \\$40.5 billion in gross production value and produced over \\$28.3 billion in direct revenue to the federal government.</p><p>Policies and procedures for managing the oil and gas resources of the OCS were established by Congress in the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act of 1953. The Department of Interior was given the central responsibility for carrying out this management role in the 1953 Act; this responsibility has been re-established in the 1978 Amendments to the OCS Lands Act. As stated in the 1978 legislation, the goals of OCS management are to:</p><p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\" data-mce-style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">...preserve, protect and develop oil and natural gas resources in a manner which is consistent with the need (A) to make such resources available to meet the Nation's energy needs as rapidly as possible... (C) to insure the public a fair and equitable return on the resources of the Outer Continental Shelf, and (D) to preserve and maintain free enterprise competition.</p><p>As part of its continuing effort to monitor the effectiveness of federal policies relating to OCS oil and gas resources, the Conservation Division of U.S. Geological Survey, Department of Interior, has sponsored the research which is the basis for the present report. The transition zone between freshwater and saltwater is represented in this report by a series of maps showing the depths to chloride concentrations of 250, 1,000, 10,000, and 18,000 milligrams per liter. The maps are based on chloride concentrations obtained from self-potential logs as well as from water-quality analyses. </p><p>Depths to the designated chloride concentrations generally increase inland from the coast except in New Jersey where they are greatest along the coast and in North Carolina where depths to the 10,000 and 18,000 milligrams per liter concentrations are greatest beneath Pamlico Sound. The transition zone between 250 and 18,000 milligrams per liter of chloride is generally 1,500 to 2,300 feet thick except in part of North Carolina, where it is less than 1,000 feet. </p><p>Depths to 250 and 1,000 milligrams per liter of chloride are probably controlled by the natural flow pattern of fresh ground water. Areas where these concentrations are relatively shallow generally coincide with areas of natural ground-water discharge. Depths to 10,000 and 18,000 milligrams per liter of chloride, and the occurrence offshore of ground water that is fresher than seawater, is attributed to long-term hydrologic conditions during which sea level fluctuations of a few hundred feet recurred several times. A summary of the historical data from 24 sites throughout Florida indicate that the principal ionic composition of atmospheric precipitation samples is calcium-sodium and bicarbonate-chloride with an average specific conductance of 32 micromhos per centimeter at 25 C. Historically, much of the sampling focused on primary nutrients and selected trace elements. Historical data indicate that nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations averaged 1.1 and 0.1 milligrams per liter, respectively. The limited trace metal data indicate that motor-vehicle activity may have a significant impact on local precipitation quality. Lead, for example, was measured in concentrations of as much as 2,400 micrograms per liter in samples collected in a highly populated, commerical area in south Florida. Statistical testing indicated that most major inorganic constituents, primary nutrients, and trace metals were significantly differnet among the sampling sites. The pH data indicated a range of about 5.0 to 7.0, but only limited pH data were collected and analyzed at the historical sites in such a timely manner as to represent pH conditions of the atmospheric precipitation during active rainfall. A critical review of the historical data suggested that while they may reflect local atmospheric quality conditions they likely do not define baseline conditions from a regional perspective. The application of these data were generally limited regarding regional extrapolation due to lack of standardization of sampling techniques, variable methods of sample preservation, nonuniform sampling intervals, variable sample sizes, and different periods of record. The city of Memphis, which is situated very close to the inferred epicenter of one of the three major 1811-1812 earthquakes, is in a potentially hazardous zone which will be susceptible to the usual seismic hazards. By recognizing the high level of seismicity in the New Madrid area, this study attempts to microzone the potential hazards in the city of Memphis.</p><p>This study examines the pertinent criteria necessary for any microzonation study. The subjects considered include:<br>(i) The seismicity of the central United States,<br>(ii) Design earthquakes,<br>(iii) Response analysis which allows us to construct the necessary microzonation maps.</p><p>The seismicity of the region is evaluated according to the state-of-the-art literature available as there is no recorded strong motion data available for the central U.S. The maximum credible earthquakes which are likely to affect Memphis are evaluated as the one in a thousand year occurrence. However, earthquakes of a lower intensity (and lower recurrence rates) are selected as design earthquakes to permit a more realistic microzonation to be performed.</p><p>For the response analysis, these earthquakes are simulated using synthetically generated accelerograms which exhibit the relevant parameters. These accelerograms displaying the significant characteristics of amplitude, predominant frequency and duration were selected to display, as accurately as possible, the anticipated nature of the horizontal bedrock-motions at Memphis. The horizontal motions (SH-waves) were applied at a depth of 45m below ground surface at numerous sites in the city of Memphis, where the soil stratigraphy had been conceptualized from borehole data.<br></p><p>The soils data made available by local sources was the only information used for this study as any laboratory testing was outside the scope of this study. The dynamic soil properties were thus established from the available Standard Penetration Resistances and soil classifications.</p><p>The results of the response analysis were transformed into microzonation maps depicting<br>(i) zones showing qualitative estimates of ground response,<br>(ii) zones showing the natural frequency of the soils,<br>(iii) zones showing the peak spectral acceleration for 2% damping ratio,<br>(iv) zones of liquefaction potential.</p><p>These maps are essentially useful for preliminary investigation and we do not expect them to be used on a quantitative basis. The 1977 daily use was 14,812 million gallons of saline water and 6,654 million gallons of freshwater. Most of the saline water, largely surface water, was pumped from tidal estuaries. Only 107.6 million gallons per day of saline water--less than 1 percent--was obtained from wells. Thermoelectric power generation used virtually all the saline water, 14,738 million gallons per day, whereas all other industrial uses were only 73 million gallons of saline water per day. The freshwater supply was almost equally divided between ground water (53 percent) and surface water (47 percent). Of the total freshwater used, 43 percent was for irrigation--an average of 2,873 million gallons of freshwater daily on the average. The remaining daily use of freshwater was 21 percent for thermoelectric power generation, 19 percent for public supply; 14 percent for industrial use other than thermoelectric power generation; and 3 percent for domestic and rural use. Irrigation was also responsible for the greatest consumption during 1977, with 1,255 million gallons consumed daily which also includes 192 million gallons per day conveyance loss. These data were acquired in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) as part of a study to determine potential geologic hazards or limitations to petroleum exploration or development on the northern Blake Plateau area. Fourteen lines were acquired perpendicular to the margin and were spaced about 25 km apart; two converging tie lines parallel the margin. The seismic-reflection profiles were placed to intersect similar seismic lines acquired in 1976 to 1977 on the Florida-Hatteras Shelf and inner Blake Plateau and to be tied to the offshore drill holes JOIDES 4 and 6 and ASP3. All acquired seismic-reflection data are of excellent quality, and for airgun data, penetration is to a depth equivalent to a two-way travel time of as much as 2.0 seconds.</p><p>Three acoustical energy sources were utilized simultaneously throughout the survey: two Bolt 40-in<sup>3</sup> airguns were fired simultaneously at <br>10-s intervals at a pressure of 2,000 psi; a Teledyne sparker unit of 600 joules was activated at a repetition rate of 1.5 s; and a ORE 3.5-kHz-tuned transducer was used in an overside fish. Return signals from the airguns were gathered by a 300-m-long hydrophone array consisting of 200 elements, and a shorter 20-element array received the sparker signal. Towing speeds were maintained between 5 and 6 knots and the hydrophones were streamed at a depth of 4 to 5 m. Analog signals were recorded on magnetic tape and graphically on EPI recorders after passing through band-pass filters set for 150/300 Hz for the sparker system and 65/150 Hz for the airgun unit. Sweep rates were 0.5 s for the sparker and 1.0 and 2.0 s for airgun.</p><p>Navigation was by Loran-C (5-minute fix interval) and satellite.</p><p>The original data may be inspected at the offices of the U.S. Geological Survey in Woods Hole, MA 02 543. These\r\nsolutions, compiled from hydrologic literature, span an\r\ninterval of time from Theis (1935) to Papadopulos, Bredehoeft,\r\nand Cooper (1973). Solutions are presented for\r\nconstant discharge, constant drawdown, and variable discharge\r\nfor pumping wells that fully penetrate leaky and\r\nnonleaky aquifers. Solutions for wells that partially penetrate\r\nleaky and nonleaky aquifers are included. Also, solutions\r\nare included for the effect of finite well radius and\r\nthe sudden injection of a volume of water for nonleaky\r\naquifers.
