The Ogallala aquifer, which consists of unconsolidated sand, gravel, and clay, is the principal source of ground water in Texas County. Saturated thickness ranged from 0 feet to over 600 feet. The estimated value used for specific yield in most of the areas was 0.15 but 0.05 was used in some places. Hydraulic conductivity ranged from 0 to more than 200 feet per day, and recharge ranged from 0.2 to 2.2 inches per year.

Irrigation pumpage was estimated using crop acreage and estimate of irrigation requirements. For projection simulations with large stress, a reasonable maximum stress using a minimum of 4 wells per square mile and 1972 pumping rate per well, if saturated thickness was more than 38 feet, was used.

Four types of boundaries were used in the model. They are:

A zero-flux (impermeable) boundary on the perimeter of the modeled area.

A constant-head boundary for a reach of the Cimarron River.

A boundary which is a constant-head boundary initially but converts to an impermeable boundary (depending on the potentiometric gradient at the boundary) for a reach of Beaver River, Palo Duro Creek, and south of Palo Duro Creek.

A boundary which is a partially penetrating stream with leaky-stream bed for parts of Beaver River and Coldwater Creek.

The base period for calibration was 1966. The model was calibrated by a simulation from 1966 to 1968 in which pumpage was modified until the 1968 calculated heads matched closely the 1968 observed heads. The model was verified by a simulation from 1966 to 1972, using the 1966 to 1972 pumpage stress, in order to determine the degree of conformity between 1972 calculated heads and 1972 observed heads. The agreement was acceptable.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr79565","usgsCitation":"Morton, R.B., 1980, Digital-model projection of saturated thickness and recoverable water in the Ogallala Aquifer, Texas County, Oklahoma: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-565, Report: viii, 34 p.; 12 Plates: 18.86 x 16.81 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr79565.","productDescription":"Report: viii, 34 p.; 12 Plates: 18.86 x 16.81 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":346274,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0565/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143862,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0565/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":346275,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0565/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":346276,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0565/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":346277,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0565/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":346278,"rank":6,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0565/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":346279,"rank":7,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0565/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":346280,"rank":8,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0565/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":346281,"rank":9,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0565/plate-7.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":346282,"rank":10,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0565/plate-8.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":346283,"rank":11,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0565/plate-9.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":346284,"rank":12,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0565/plate-10.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":346285,"rank":13,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0565/plate-11.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":346286,"rank":14,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0565/plate-12.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Oklahoma","county":"Texas County","otherGeospatial":"Ogallala Aquifer","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-101.0671,36.9978],[-100.9536,36.9988],[-100.9441,36.9988],[-100.9448,36.8478],[-100.9534,36.8476],[-100.9524,36.4998],[-101.0908,36.5003],[-101.6255,36.5025],[-101.87,36.5034],[-102.0325,36.5041],[-102.0332,36.8493],[-102.0275,36.8495],[-102.0276,36.8672],[-102.0281,36.9925],[-101.9881,36.9925],[-101.918,36.9929],[-101.5552,36.9951],[-101.544,36.9952],[-101.2679,36.9967],[-101.0671,36.9978]]]},\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Texas\",\"state\":\"OK\"}}]}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a82e4b07f02db64ace2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Morton, Robert B.","contributorId":50899,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Morton","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161346,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

A regression model, relating flood-peak discharge to concurrent rainfall and antecedent soil moisture conditions, was used to simulate 67-year records of annual peak discharges. Flood-frequency characteristics were determined for the simulated annual peaks and for the observed annual peaks at each of 22 gaging stations. Drainage area, bank-full channel conveyance, and percentage of urban development were used as independent variables; and weighted flood-frequency discharges were used as dependent variables in the multiple regression analysis.
\n
Relationships applicable to unregulated streams were developed for predicting floods with recurrence intervals of 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, and 500 years. Drainage basins ranged in area from 1.33 to 182 square miles. The percentage of urban development in these basins ranges from 37 to 98.9 percent.
\n
The relationships indicate that as a basin changes from a completely natural state to one of complete urbanization, the magnitude of a 2-year peak discharge is increased by a factor of 4.2, the magnitude of a 50-year peak is increased by a factor of 4.9, and the magnitude of a 100-year peak is increased by a factor of 4. 9.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Austin, TX","doi":"10.3133/wri8017","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the City of Houston, the Harris County Flood Control District, the Texas Department of Water Resources, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers","usgsCitation":"Liscum, F., and Massey, B., 1980, Technique for estimating the magnitude and frequency of floods in the Houston, Texas, Metropolitan Area: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 80-17, iv, 29 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri8017.","productDescription":"iv, 29 p.","numberOfPages":"33","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":258640,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1980/0017/report.pdf","size":"2711","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":258641,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1980/0017/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","city":"Houston","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -95.8941650390625,\n              29.463514026304715\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.8941650390625,\n              30.197366063272245\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.8944091796875,\n              30.197366063272245\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.8944091796875,\n              29.463514026304715\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.8941650390625,\n              29.463514026304715\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a08e4b07f02db5fa364","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Liscum, Fred","contributorId":95463,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Liscum","given":"Fred","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":199737,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Massey, B.C.","contributorId":102483,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Massey","given":"B.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":199738,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

When supporting data from water analyses are available, the value of the cementation exponent m can be determined more precisely. Data for this study were taken from logs of oil-test wells, Amstrat sample studies, drill-stem tests and water test wells in parts of Montana, North and South Dakota, and Wyoming. The preferred resistivity curves for apparent water resistivity (Rwa) analyses are the deeply focused laterolog and the induction log. The standard electric log can be used if the drilling mud is not saturated with salt. The preferred porosity logs are the sonic, sidewall neutron, compensated neutron, and the density logs. Older, uncalibrated neutron curves can be empirically calibrated in some instances, however, resulting porosities are frequently anomalous when compared to those determined from core or modern logs. When apparent water resistivity is determined for many wells, the data can be plotted and contoured to outline areas of recharge, direction of probable ground-water movement, and location and salinity of brine areas. The effects of this additional stress on the ground-water system, particularly on the environmentally sensitive Barka, Slough, are of concern in the basin.

Expectations of the developer are that about 6,640 acre-feet per year of additional consumptive ground-water use will be required to irrigate an agricultural development of 2,500 acres of vineyards and 1,200 acres of truck-farmed vegetables. This represents an increase in net basin pumpage of about 60 percent. The developer plans to obtain this water from 12 large-diameter irrigation wells in the Harris Canyon area.

Analysis of the potential drawdowns in the vicinity of Barka Slough, by using the Theis nonequilibrium formula, indicates that drawdowns would average 6 feet after 10 years of pumping and would eventually exceed 10 feet. Because the artesian head in the aquifer that supplies the slough is generally less than 3 feet above land surface, these declines would probably mean that the wetlands of Barka Slough would disappear.

An empirical relation, based on historical records of base flow in San Antonio Creek and net pumpage in the basin, also indicates that the additional irrigation withdrawals would cause base flow in San Antonio Creek to cease.

Both of these analyses consider the effects of only this particular agricultural development, which would be in addition to any decline caused by other increases in pumpage in the basin.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri8095","usgsCitation":"Mallory, M.J., 1980, Potential effects of increased ground-water pumpage on Barka Slough, San Antonio Creek Valley, Santa Barbara County, California: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 80-95, iv, 16 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri8095.","productDescription":"iv, 16 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":159252,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1980/0095/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":359411,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1980/0095/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Santa Barbara County","otherGeospatial":"Barka Slough, San Antonio Creek valley","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b15e4b07f02db6a50c9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mallory, Michael J.","contributorId":59408,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mallory","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":199992,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The two-dimensional finite-difference model of Trescott, Pinder, and Larson was used with slight modification. The way ground-water evapotranspiration varies with depth was modified, and a minimum transmissivity was used to prevent the model from \"going dry\" during water-table simulations.
\n
Tests of the model showed good correlation with field data, but also showed that certain additional types of information would be useful to make the model more reliable. Particularly helpful would be more water-level and evapotranspiration data, synoptic base-flow measurements in the subbasins, and better information on the variation of permeability and specific yield with depth.
\n
Predictive simulations made by the model show the effects of imposing various changes on the hydrologic system. Residential development was simulated in 1 square mile of the basin by combinations of the following conditions: 1-acre, 1/2-acre, and 1/4-acre lot size; wastewater disposal by septic systems or by public sewers; domestic wells or public-supply wells for water supply; and 0, 1, and 5 percent reduction in recharge in the developed area. Where water is supplied locally by wells, decreased lot size and reduced recharge result in increased drawdowns and reduced base flow. When wastewater is exported by sewers, these effects are magnified. Through 1978, OCS oil and gas leases had yielded \\$40.5 billion in gross production value and produced over \\$28.3 billion in direct revenue to the federal government.

Policies and procedures for managing the oil and gas resources of the OCS were established by Congress in the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act of 1953. The Department of Interior was given the central responsibility for carrying out this management role in the 1953 Act; this responsibility has been re-established in the 1978 Amendments to the OCS Lands Act. The transition zone between freshwater and saltwater is represented in this report by a series of maps showing the depths to chloride concentrations of 250, 1,000, 10,000, and 18,000 milligrams per liter. The maps are based on chloride concentrations obtained from self-potential logs as well as from water-quality analyses.

Depths to the designated chloride concentrations generally increase inland from the coast except in New Jersey where they are greatest along the coast and in North Carolina where depths to the 10,000 and 18,000 milligrams per liter concentrations are greatest beneath Pamlico Sound. The transition zone between 250 and 18,000 milligrams per liter of chloride is generally 1,500 to 2,300 feet thick except in part of North Carolina, where it is less than 1,000 feet.

Depths to 250 and 1,000 milligrams per liter of chloride are probably controlled by the natural flow pattern of fresh ground water. Areas where these concentrations are relatively shallow generally coincide with areas of natural ground-water discharge. Depths to 10,000 and 18,000 milligrams per liter of chloride, and the occurrence offshore of ground water that is fresher than seawater, is attributed to long-term hydrologic conditions during which sea level fluctuations of a few hundred feet recurred several times. The origin of ground water that is saltier than seawater is attributed to the leaching of evaporitic strata beneath the Continental Shelf and Slope followed by westward movement of the brines during periods of sea-level rise.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr8171","usgsCitation":"Meisler, H., 1980, Preliminary delineation of salty ground water in the northern Atlantic Coastal Plain: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 81-71, Report: 41 p.; 4 Figures: 50.22 x 22.92 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr8171.","productDescription":"Report: 41 p.; 4 Figures: 50.22 x 22.92 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":484706,"rank":6,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0071/figure-5.pdf","text":"Figure 5","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":484705,"rank":5,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0071/figure-4.pdf","text":"Figure 4","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":484704,"rank":4,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0071/figure-3.pdf","text":"Figure 3","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":484703,"rank":3,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0071/figure-2.pdf","text":"Figure 2","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":484702,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0071/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":144076,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0071/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Northern Atlantic Coastal Plain","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e47e4e4b07f02db4bb3fb","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Meisler, Harold","contributorId":34103,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Meisler","given":"Harold","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161159,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
