Nitrate data for water samples collected during 1952-76 show that: (1) median nitrate concentration of water in the sewered part of the entire thickness of the upper glacial aquifer is not significantly different (at the 0.95 confidence limit, N = 1400) from that in the unsewered area, (2) median nitrate concentrations in the upper 3 meters of the upper glacial aquifer are significantly lower (at the 0.90 confidence limit, N = 15) in the sewered area than in the unsewered area, (3) in the sewered area, water from 8 of 10 wells in the upper glacial aquifer shows significantly decreasing nitrate concentration with time, (4) total nitrogen concentrations in streams draining the sewered area are significantly lower than in those draining the unsewered area, (5) from more than 2,000 nitrate analyses of water in the Magothy aquifer collected from 1952-76, it was found that nitrate is present at all depths but that nitrate concentrations decrease with depth, and (6) although water from most Magothy wells having long-term nitrate records shows no significant change in nitrate concentration with time, where the change is significant, nitrate is increasing. The required quantity of 100 gallons per minute probably could be obtained from one or more wells in the alluvium along Pescadero Creek; however, the quality of the water probably would deteriorate with time and might not be suitable for public supply for more than 20 or 30 years. This area has been divided into 22 basins. The study of the alluvial aquifer-system will be made in the following stages: (1) project planning, (2) literature searches, (3) compiling existing data, (4) data collection, (5) basin modeling, (6) regional aquifer modeling, and (7) reports. The regional aquifer study will be accomplished through studying each of the 22 basins. Data compilation and limited data collection will be part of each basin study. Digital computer models will be made for those basins where data are sufficient. A regional aquifer model will be developed from the basin models. In addition to this report, there will be basin hydrology reports and the final regional report. Included in the final report will be a description of the regional hydrology and geology. intensities as well as assignment of intensities to earthquakes that previously had none assigned. &nbsp;Intensity values were updated from new and additional data sources that were not available at the time of original compilation. &nbsp;Some epicenters were relocated on the basis of new information. &nbsp;The data shown in table 1 are estimates of the most accurate epicenter, magnitude, and intensity of each earthquake, on the basis of historical and current information. &nbsp;Some of the aftershocks from large earthquakes are listed but are incomplete in many instances, especially for The headwater areas are mountainous with steep, relatively narrow channels. Land in the headwater areas is heavily forested, but small towns and farms are common in the valleys of large streams. Downstream, the basin is characterized by low hills and wider stream channels. Land in this part of the basin is also predominantly forested; however, large agricultural and urban areas are common. Stable sulfur isotope </span><span>fractionation studies indicate a biological role in sulfate reduction. However, </span><span>sulfate—reducing activity as determined by use of a radioactive sulfur isotope </span><span>was observed in only 1 of 16 samples. Bacterial dissimilatory sulfate reduction </span><span>is postulated to be responsible for a major part of the sulfide produced in </span><span>these ground waters. The ground-water system that feeds the streams is a shallow subsystem that overlies the regional subsurface flow system. The Connetquot Brook basin was selected for study because it has not been appreciably affected by urbanization. Studies in the basin indicate that the shallow ground-water flow system circulates to a depth of less than 30 feet below the stream channel. Directly beneath the stream, shallow ground-water flow is upward toward the stream channel, but elsewhere in the basin it is predominantly horizontal. Relatively large increases in head with depth in the first 3 feet below the streambed suggest local differences in hydraulic conductivity or in size of area through which the water flows, or both. Water-table contour maps of the area adjacent to Connetquot River for September 1977 and March 1978 indicate that the shape of the water table and the direction of flow lines change seasonally. Variations in ground-water levels and gradients directly affect the rates of ground-water seepage to the stream. Geologic and topographic features that control the movement and regional availability of ground water are explained and illustrated. Five aquifer systems beneath the most populous areas are described. Estimates of ground-water yield were determined for the region by using ground-water data for the populated areas and by extrapolating known subsurface conditions and interpreting subsurface conditions from surficial features in the other areas. Area maps of generalized geology, Quaternary sediment thickness, and general availability of ground water are shown. Surface-water resources are summarized by describing how basin characteristics affect the discharge in streams. Seasonal trend of streamflow for three types of streams is described. Regression equations for 4 streamflow characteristics (annual, monthly minimum, and maximum discharge) were obtained by using gaging station streamflow characteristics and 10 basin characteristics. In the 24 regression equations presented, drainage area is the most significant basin characteristic, but 5 others are used. Maps of mean annual unit runoff and minimum unit yield for 7 consecutive days with a recurrence interval of 10 years are shown. Historic discharge data at gaging stations is tabulated and representative low-flow and flood-flow frequency curves are shown. Mapping of outwash sands and gravels delineated two distinct layers of sand and gravel in the southern and eastern parts of the county that merge into one aquifer more than 100 feet thick to the north and west. A digital model that simulates groundwater flow in three dimensions was used to integrate the geologic and hydrologic conditions into a suitable analog of the groundwater system surrounding Fort Wayne. The model consisted of three layers representing (1) the upper till, (2) the upper sand and gravel, and (3) the lower aquifer. The lower aquifer represents a combination of the lower sand and gravel and a section of limestone aquifer immediately underlying the glacial sediments. The model, calibrated against water-level and streamflow data collected during September 1976, was used to simulate pumping and to evaluate the effects of pumping on groundwater levels and streamflows. Two distribution schemes of pumping were tested, each with two different boundary conditions (constant heads and constant flows). The results of these simulated pumping schemes indicate that between 30 and 40 million gallons per day can be produced and that the streamflow losses resulting from this pumping would be between 17 and 25 million gallons per day.
