The monitoring sites are: Susquehanna River at Conowingo, Md.; Potomac River at Washington, D.C.; and James River at Cartersville, Va. Water-quality data collected from October 1978 to April 1980 are presented in tables. Concentrations of major ions, nutrient and carbon species, metals, pesticides, suspended sediment, and other selected constituents are presented for a range of flows. The mean, standard deviation, minimum, maximum, and median values for each constituent were determined by standard methods and are presented for each sampling station. Bivariate linear regressions were run for all constituents versus streamf low, specific conductance, and suspended sediment. Most of the inundated areas shown are marshlands or flood plains of small tributary streams. Storm-tides frequency and records of annual maximum tides at Mobile, Alabama, since 1772, are presented. Offshore winds reached about 160 miles per hour. A wind-velocity of about 145 miles per hour was recorded near Dauphin Island, Alabama. Three portable flowmeters that might be suitable for obtaining fast and accurate discharge measure-ments on large irrigation systems were tested during 1979 under both laboratory and field conditions: propeller type gated-pipe meter, a Doppler meter, and a transient-time meter.</p><p>The gated-pipe meter was found to be difficult to use and sensitive to particulate matter in the fluid. The Doppler meter, while easy to use, would not function suitably on steel pipe 6 inches or larger in diameter, or on aluminum pipe larger than 8 inches in diameter. The transient-time meter was more difficult to use than the other two meters; however, this instrument provided a high degree of accuracy and reliability under a variety of conditions. Because the volume of use of these compounds is low, insufficient data is available on their toxic properties. This report is an attempt to summarize the known data from published and industry sources. The physical properties, hazards of handling,proper storage facilities, and adequate protective Clothing are discussed for each compound as well as for their common and less-common solvents. Toxicity data for these materials is listed along with exposure symptoms and suggested first aid treatments. Safety for the worker is emphasized. Three reclamation methods which recover the solvent used as a dilutant and purify the heavy liquid are discussed and illustrated. These include: the water cascade, re fluxing-distillation-condensation, and flash evaporation methods. At the present time this work is still very much a research effort focused largely on earthquake occurrence within the San Andreas fault system and related faults in California. Major aspects of this research include 1) studies of the spatial-temporal patterns of earthquake occurrence as a basis for recognizing distinctive sequences of events that may precede moderate-to-large earthquakes, 2) studies of Earth structure as a basis for the accurate location of earthquake hypocenters and understanding the physical properties and state of active fault zones, and 3) studies of the earthquake source mechanisms as a basis for recognizing possible variations in stress-drop, rupture direction, and so on that may precede moderate-to-large The model also was used to predict the effects of pro-</span><span>posed surface mining and the resulting mine dewatering on potentiometric sur-</span><span>faces of the aquifer. The model was calibrated in a steady-state simulation </span><span>using water levels and manmade discharges from the aquifer that were measured </span><span>during 1979. Too few data were available to verify the calibrated model in a </span><span>transient-state simulation with historical aquifer response to manmade dis-</span><span>charges. Predictions made with the model are considered to be semiquantita</span><span>tive. Discharge from the proposed surface mine was predicted to average 0.3 </span><span>cubic foot per second during the 15 years of operation. In the analysis, several different groupings of stations were investigated, including divisions by geographic location and size of drainage area. The grouping consisting of two leeward divisions and one windward division produced the best results. Drainage basins ranged in area from 0.03 to 45.7 square miles. Equations relating flood magnitudes of selected frequencies to basin characteristics were developed for the three divisions of Oahu. These equations can be used to estimate the magnitude and frequency of floods for any site, gaged or ungaged, for any desired recurrence interval from 2 to 100 years. Data on basin characteristics, flood magnitudes for various recurrence intervals from individual station-frequency curves, and computed flood magnitudes by use of the regression equation are tabulated to provide the needed data. It occurs in the central part of </span><span>the area and extends inland about half a mile. </span></p><p><span>The potential yields of the two principal aquifers in the Soquel-Aptos area are 4,400 acre-feet per year from the Purisima Formation and 1,500 acre-feet per year from the Aromas Sand.
