Holocene estuarine silt and clay cover most of the bay floor; relict eolian and deltaic sand occurs along the eastern shore; sandy patches are present in the main channel owing to higher tidal current velocities. Organic content is high along the western shore, where tidal flats are extensive, and in the slough at the mouth of Coyote Creek where wastewaters discharge.</p>\n<p>Thirty-one species of benthonic foraminifera were identified in surficial sediments of San Francisco Bay estuary; of these, 20 species were stained red by rose Bengal and are considered as live. Water depth, sediment textural characteristics, salinity, organic matter, sediment pH, and biological competition were considered as factors that might affect distribution of foraminifera. Four ecologic zones based on observed trends in the distribution and abundance of several species correlate well with some environmental factors. Four groups based on the Q-mode analysis of frequency counts of foraminiferal assemblages are reasonably similar to the four ecologic zones. These zones, showing restricted depth ranges, are: Inner Coastal Zone, where Elphidium incertum obscurum and Trochammina infiata are prominent; Outer Coastal Zone, dominated by Ammonia beccarii tepida and Elphidium incatum; Deep Bay Zone, where Elphidietla hannai, Elphidium incertum clavatum, Hopkinsina pacifica, and Bolivina spp. appear in abundance; and Deep Channel Zone, where Elphidiella hannai is most abundant. In the Inner Coastal Zone, salinity due to large fluctuations is a limiting factor for many species. Substrate textural characteristics are primary determinants of the distribution of agglutinated foraminifers. The percentage of organic matter in the sediment correlates well with the abundance of Elphidium incertum obscurum, a ubiquitous species in San Francisco Bay. Sediment pH is not critical. In order to achieve this goal, CODE has been designed (1) to define the different space and time scales of the physical parameters important to the shelf flow field and (2) to identify and describe the essential kinematical and dynamical processes governing wind‐driven circulation on the continental shelf.</p><p>A variety of models exist for the wind‐forced response of continental shelf waters. The salient differences among these models lies in the assumed balances between terms in the governing equations. For example,<span>&nbsp;</span><i>Gill and Schumann</i><span>&nbsp;</span>[1974] in a barotropic model assume a geostrophic cross‐shelf momentum balance but include the time‐dependent and surface and bottom stress terms in the along‐shelf momentum balance.<span>&nbsp;</span><i>Csanady</i><span>&nbsp;</span>[1978] in his arrested topographic wave model involving bottom friction assumes a quasisteady alongshelf response neglecting advective terms and retaining the geostrophic cross‐shelf balance. Various shelf wave models assume inviscid dynamics and other models assume a simple balance between surface and bottom stress in shallow water. The slumping is believed to be related to the liberation of free gas by clathrate decomposition and consequent weakening of unconsolidated sediments above the clathrate. This report will describe the areas of algorithm development that are occurring in applications, research, and operational environments. Included is an overview of image processing activities at institutions which are generally regarded as leaders in IP algorithm development and implementation. Finally, this report addresses directions in IP algorithm development that are being proposed for the EROS Data Center (EDC). On the basis of regional considerations and the work of investigators in the early 1900s, an Ordovician age for the Quantico seems likely. Also, the Dale City pluton is not intrusive into the Quantico but is unconformable beneath it. The phosphorite consists primarily of carbonate-fluorapatite, some calcite, minor quartz and other minerals. Drilling and other evidence show that the phosphorite is a lag derived from Miocene strata correlatable with phosphatic M Tertiary sediments on the continent. It has undergone variable cycles of erosion, reworking, partial dissolution and reprecipitation. Its present form varies from phosphatized carbonate debris, loose pellets, and pebbles, to continuous pavements, plates, and conglomeratic boulders. Virginia. These diatoms are mostly cosmopolitan marine forms, but some species suggest deposition in brackish water that had a freshwater inflow. The regional stratigraphy, as well as the pelecypods and foraminifers, indicates that the beds may have been laid down in a lagoonal or estuarine environment. Beam scans with an electron microprobe indicate that no intermediate minerals of the solid-solution series alunite-jarosite occur in these crystals. (million years) ago. Peak activity was at about 3.0-2.5 m.y., both on the central andesite-rhyolite shield volcano and on the surrounding alkali basalt-trachyte volcanic plateau, and occurred concurrently with an episode of NNE-trending basin-range faulting. The K-Ar dates also indicate that the regional Ortiz pediment surface, graded to the ancestral Rio Grande, existed in the Mount Taylor area as recently as 3 m.y. ago and that 250-400 m of erosional downcutting has occurred in subsequent time. Within this succession, three lithotectonic units, or sequences of rock that were deformed semi-independently of each other, have somewhat different structural characteristics. Both the Alleghenian and Taconic orogenies have left their imprint on the rocks. Wind and water gaps are structurally controlled, thus placing doubt upon the hypothesis of regional superposition. Wisconsinan deposits and erosion effects are common. We will examine these geologic features as well as some of the economic deposits in the area. </p><p>Figure 1 is an index map of the field-trip area, showing the trip route and quadrangle coverage. The complex consists of the following subdivisions: Lac La Croix Granite, granite-rich migmatite, schist-rich migmatite, quartz-feldspar gneiss, hornblende quartz diorite and diorite, granodiorite and trondhjemite, amphibolite and amphibolite migmatite, older migmatite, biotite schist, Burntside Gneiss, and pegmatite. Because the name Vermilion Granitic Complex is proposed as a more inclusive group term, the more restricted name Vermilion Granite (Grout, 1923) is hereby abandoned. The new name Lac La Croix Granite is proposed for the uniform, light-pink biotite granite that occurs widely in the eastern and central parts of the complex. It is denned as having less than 5 percent of schistose or gneissic inclusions and is therefore more restricted than the Vermilion Granite of Grout (1926), which included substantial amounts of migmatitic rocks. The name Burntside Gneiss is adopted as a replacement for the older term Burntside Granite Gneiss, originally named by Grout (1926). Two thousand meters of andesite and basalt flows, lahars, and volcaniclastic rocks of late Eocene age, and of basaltic andesite, tuff, and flood basalts of Eocene to middle Miocene age were structurally domed by the piston-like intrusion of a large body of rhyolite. The eruption of rhyolite flows at 14.3±2 million years followed the structural doming, and upper Miocene tuffs and basalt flows lapped against the dome and the rhyolite. A felsitic rhyolite ring intrusion 3 km in diameter, emplaced during the doming, is now exposed in the deeply eroded core of the dome. The rhyolites range in Si02 content from 69 to 76 percent and are peraluminous. The nonporphyritic ring intrusion is more silicic than the flows erupted later, which contain up to 23 percent phenocrysts of plagioclase, hypersthene, biotite, clinopyroxene, and quartz. They suggested that uranium was lost both during crystallization, perhaps as the volatile hexafluoride, and/or later through the action of ground water. Similar results have been obtained by Shatkov et al. (1970) and Kovalev and Maylasova (1973).</p><p> Zielinski (1978) compared the uranium contents of paired nonhydrated glassy and primarily devitrified phases of a number of subalkaline rhyolitic lavas and tuffs from various localities in the western United States. He found a generally smaller degree of uranium loss than had been observed by Rosholt et al. (1971) for peralkaline materials. Both are ophiolite complexes. Palladium, platinum, and rhodium were found in concentrations of up to 170, 200, and 22 parts per billion, respectively. Average concentrations for both complexes and all rock types collected are 28 ppb palladium, 33 ppb platinum, and 9 ppb rhodium. The Pt:Pt+Pd ranges from 0.41 to 0.67 and averages 0.57. Some of the tuffs consist largely of glass or have been partly or completely altered to calcium montmorillonite; many of them have been almost completely zeolitized or contain a zeolite and some clay. Only three zeolitized specimens contain a little glass. With four exceptions, the zeolitie is clinoptilolite; the exceptions are one altered to chabazite, one to mordenite, one to erionite, and one to erionite, clinoptilolite, and chabazite. The tuffs are mostly of airfall origin and of rhyolitic or probable rhyolitic composition and generally contain negligible percentages of crystal and lithic fragments. Two specimens are tuffaceous sedimentary rocks, and two are ash-flow tuffs. The tuffs range in age from early Pliocene or late Miocene to Oligocene. Some were deposited in lacustrine or playa environments; others were deposited in freshwater alluvial environments. All the beds examined in the lower Miocene and older formations have been zeolitized. Zeolitization of beds in younger formations depends on the environment of deposition.
