Two of the sites, AMCOR (Atlantic Margin Coring Project) 6002 and AMCOR 6011, contained good Miocene assemblages: a small Pleistocene assemblage occurred at the top of AMCOR 6002. A Late Miocene to Early Pliocene assemblage was encountered in AMCOR 6007B. AMCOR 6013, 6019, and 6021 contained Pleistocene assemblages. In addition to the AMCOR cores, 3 additional Atlantic Margin cores were studied. These were the JOIDES 1 (Caldrill) core, and Atlantic Slope Project (ASP) cores 10 and 22. JOIDES 1 contains a Middle Miocene assemblage similar to AMCOR 6002. ASP 10 contains a Lower Pliocene assemblage and ASP 22 contains a Middle to Late Oligocene and a Pleistocene assemblage. Siliceous assemblages at all sites consisted mainly of shallow shelf species, including brackish and marine benthics and occasionally freshwater forms. Although planktonic forms were present, they were few and most were extant cosmopolitan species. This makes it difficult to correlate the biostratigraphy of the sediments with siliceous microfossil zonations from other oceans. The complexes are characterized by undeformed to gneissic granitic intrusions, gneissic to phyllonitic xenoliths and wall rocks derived mainly from Precambrian granitic rock, shallow-dipping foliation, and remarkably uniform directions of lineation. Parts of this zone have been recognized and studied extensively for more than 30 yr, but there remains a divergence of opinion about the age, depth of emplacement, and origin of the complexes. Field relations indicate that host rocks as young as or younger than Mesozoic were involved in cataclasis. K-Ar and fission-track ages indicate that the complexes were at temperatures uniformly in excess of 400°C in the middle Tertiary (20 to 30 m.y. ago) and that the bedrock between and very near the complexes was not thermally affected. Tertiary plutons characteristically associated with the high-grade metamorphic rocks are also cataclastically deformed, and stratigraphic depths to the top of metamorphic terranes were no more than 6 km and possibly less than 3 km. These and other data suggest to some that the complexes developed during intrusion of composite batholiths at shallow depth in an anisotropic stress field during the middle Tertiary. On the other hand, Rb-Sr and U-Th-Pb techniques yielded older ages (≥44 m.y.) for some samples. The texture changes from sandy at the mouth of the bay to muddy in its upper parts. In any part of the bay , sediment is coarsest in the channel bottoms, where lag deposits accumulate. The sediment tends to fine in an upslope direction and is finest in supratidal flat deposits of silt and clay. </p><p>The nature of sedimentary structures depends on the combination of physical and biological processes and sediment textures. Bedforms exist wherever the bed is sandy. In the main tidal channels sandwaves and dunes up to 4 meters high occur. In tributary channels and at the margins of the main channel, at shallower depths and under less intense currents , the structures are generally less than a meter high. Current ripples occur in t he sandy bed of all of the tidal channels and in runoff channels cross the tidal flat. Symmetric long-crested ripples are produced by wave action over the sandy intertidal flat. </p><p>Internal structures in the bay's sediment depend not only on the nature of the bedform but also on the rate of bioturbation relative to physical processes. Under fields of large sandwaves or dunes, medium- to large-scale tabular and trough crossbedding predominates. This crossbedding generally is unidirectional, reflecting the locally dominant current (ebb or flood). Ripple bedding predominates elsewhere in sandy sediment within the channels. Where sand transport is diminished, as on the floor of the upper tributary channels, bioturbation exceeds the rate of production of physical structures and bedding is destroyed. The depositional banks in such areas tend to be sites of rapid sediment accumulation and bedding in the form of interlayered sand (commonly ripple bedded) and mud persists. On intertidal flats the sediment accumulates slowly and bioturbation erases nearly all physical structures. Bedding is preserved only where deposition is locally rapid , as in topographic depressions or on the depositional banks of runoff channels, or where faunal activity is inhibited, as beneath mounds of blue-green algae. The rate of sedimentation is slower still on the supratidal flats, but the general paucity of faunal activity allows the preservation of thin alternations of fine sand , silt or clay.</p><p> The lateral migration of the tidal channels produces vertical sequences in which topographically higher facies are superposed on one another. Near the mouth of the estuary the upward sequence: lag deposit — crossbedded sand — ripple or planar-bedded sand is typical. The crossbedding shows a general upward decrease in thickness and a progression from trough to tabular units. In the main tidal channel - in the central estuary and in sandy tributary channels, the typical vertical sequence resembles that near the mouth , with the exception that the sequence is capped by bioturbated sandy or muddy tide flat deposits. They are mostly in young orogenic belts, but some are in areas of rifting continental platforms. Analyses of<span>&nbsp;</span></span><sup>13</sup><span>C content indicate that much of the CO</span><sub>2</sub><span><span>&nbsp;</span>is derived from the mantle and that other important sources are the metamorphism of marine carbonate‐bearing sedimentary rocks and the degradation of organic material. The presence of calc‐silicate minerals, such as pumpellyite in metagraywacke, is evidence of former conversion of carbonate‐bearing rocks into calc‐silicate minerals and release of CO</span><sub>2</sub><span>. The CO</span><sub>2</sub><span><span>&nbsp;</span>pressure in fractured rocks of a fault zone reduces the effective normal stress and, if it is sufficiently great, allows the fault to slip. If the pressure were maintained at a sufficiently high level, the fault behavior might be characterized by frequent small earthquakes and aseismic creep such as occur along active segments of the San Andreas system. The presence of CO</span><sub>2</sub><span>‐rich springs may indicate a potentially hazardous seismic region. Until the last decade or so, hydrology was a laggard science. The science was also fragmented among surface‐water hydrology, agricultural hydrology, groundwater hydrology, oceanology, hydrometeorology, and hydrogeochemistry. Chalcedony collected from and directly beneath thick accumulations of rhyolite ash contain as much as 250 ppm uranium in a pre-ash topographic low and lesser concentrations (10 to 160 ppm) elsewhere. Differences in the U concentration of chalcedony collected from approximately the same stratigraphic horizon reflect the enrichment of uranium in ground water as it percolated downward and basinward through the overlying rhyolite ash. Uranium is homogeneously distributed as a uranyl species within the chalcedony and reflects coprecipitation of dissolved uranium and colloidal silica in a uraniferous silica-gel. Laboratory measurements of the partitioning of uranium between various solutions and silica-gel precipitates indicate that, for ranges of pH and dissolved carbonate typical of ground water, dried silica-gel contains about 400 to 1,000 times the uranium concentration of the solution from which it forms. Uranium is postulated to be incorporated as an adsorbed uranyl-silica-hydroxyl complex. A 20-m.y.-minimum apparent age for uraniferous chalcedony was obtained by U-Pb isotope dating. Reported minimum ages for nearby sedimentary uranium deposits generally lie between this age and the age of rhyolite which hosts the silica (32.4 + or - 2.6 m.y.). This research is aimed at reducing the subjectivity and increasing the reliability by designing an improved method that depends largely on geological data and their statistical frequency of occurrence. This progress report outlines a genetic approach to modelling the geological factors that controlled uranium mineralization in order to evaluate the favourability for the occurrence of undiscovered uranium deposits of the type modeled. A genetic model is constructed from all the factors that describe the processes, in chronological sequence, that formed uranium deposits thought to have a common origin. The field and laboratory evidence for the processes constitute a geologic occurrence base that parallels the chronological sequence of events. The genetic model and the geologic-occurrence base are portrayed as two columns of an interactive matrix called the \"genetic-geologic model\". For each column, eight chronological stages are used to describe the overall formation of the uranium deposits. These stages consist of (1) precursor processes; (2) host-rock formation; (3) preparation of host-rock; (4) uranium-source development; (5) transport of uranium; (6) primary uranium deposition; (7) post-deposition modification; and (8) preservation. To apply the genetic-geological model to evaluate favourability, a question is posed that determines the presence or absence of each attribute listed under the geologic-occurrence base. By building a logic circuit of the attributes according to either their essential or non-essential nature, the resultant match between a well-documented control area and the test area may be determined. The degree of match is a measure of favourability for uranium occurrence as hypothesized in the genetic model. However, band loss has long been recognized as a potential problem, (Hickey, 1952; Ludwig, 1967).  Recently, Brownie et al. (1978) presented 14 models based on an array of explicit assumptions for the analysis of band recovery data.  Various estimation models (assumption sets) allowed survival and/or recovery rates to be (a) constant, (b) time-specific, or (c) time- and age-specific.  Optimal inference methods were employed and statistical tests of critical assumptions were developed and emphasized.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>The methods of Brownie et al. (1978), as with all previously published methods of which we are aware, assume no loss of bands during the study.  However, some band loss is certain to occur and this potentially biases the estimates of annual survival rates whatever the analysis method.  A few empirical studies have estimated band loss rates (a notable exception is Ludwig, 1967); consequently, for almost all band recovery data, the exact rate of band loss is unknown.  In this paper we investigate the bias in estimates of annual survival rates due to varying degrees of hypothesized band loss.  Our main results are based on perhaps the most useful model, originally developed by Seber (1970), for estimation of annual survival rate. Roosting social organization and related activities and behavior are described. ♂♂ held diurnal roosting territories where ♀♀ gathered in small and compositionally labile groups, attracted to the most vocal ♂♂. Annual variation in population-wide aspects of social organization follows predictable seasonal changes in climate and predator abundance. Variability between individuals follows a common mammalian pattern: high male competition for ♀, variance in presumed male reproductive success, and a mating system resembling one based on resource defense polygyny. The sequence of historic eruptions along the southwest rift zone, beginning in 1868, shows a general pattern of uprift migration and increasing eruptive volume, culminating in the great 1950 eruption. No event comparable to 1950, in terms of volume or vent length, is evident for at least the previous 1000 years. Rates of lava accumulation along the zone have been subequal to those of Kilauea Volcano during the historic period but they were much lower in late prehistoric time (unpubl. Kilauea data by R. T. Holcomb). Rates of surface covering and volcanic growth have been markedly asymmetric along Mauna Loa's southwest rift zone. Accumulation rates have been about half again as great on the northwest side of the rift zone in comparison with the southeast side. The structures include closely spaced calcite-impregnated columns, tubes, and other configurations with subcylindrical to bizarre cross sections and predominantly vertical orientation in coarse, barely coherent pumice sands along the south shore of the lake. Many structures terminate upward in extensive calcareous layers of caliche and tufa. Locally they enter the bases of tufa mounds and towers. A common form superficially resembles root casts and animal burrows except that branching is mostly up instead of down. The geographical coincidence of the D,&nbsp;</span><sup>18</sup><span>O, and H</span><sub>2</sub><span>O</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;patterns with the present trace of the San Andreas fault leave little doubt that some kind of groundwater circulation system has operated in the vicinity of the fault in central California. Similar isotopic patterns exist in rocks along the Garlock fault. These water‐rock interactions probably took place at temperatures &lt;200°C, although depth, extent, and timing are not resolved. Stable isotope compositions of rocks from many localities of the earth have provided unambiguous proof that meteoric waters have descended to depths at least as great as 8 to 10 km when a heat source such as a cooling pluton was present. Massive circulation of groundwater is common in the upper crust of tectonically active areas and may affect the frictional stress state along major faults. The geochemical evidence for extensive deep circulation of groundwater and the relatively high permeabilities for most rocks of the upper crust recently compiled by Brace (1980) argues against nearly lithostatic fluid pressures as an ambient condition of the upper crust. There were no effects on eggshell thickness, number of eggs laid, young hatched, and young fledged from feeding a low level of Aroclor® 1248 to captive screech owls. The polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) residues found in the eggs of the dosed birds ranged from 3.9 ppm to 17.8 ppm. Investigation of Voyager 1 and 2 images has shown that bright terrain is grooved and separates dark polygons of cratered terrain. The grooved terrain contains alternating ridges and grooves in straight and curvilinear sets, which are locally interrupted by smooth patches and swaths. Cratered terrain, where 'it occurs in small wedges and slivers, has a pervasive grain of narrowly spaced furrows, and thus is transitional to grooved terrain. An analysis of the morphology of terrain types, and of superposition and cross-cutting relations, suggests that grooved terrain grew at the expense of cratered terrain, that tracts of cratered terrain were converted into grooved terrain&nbsp;</span><i>in situ</i><span>, and that vertical tectonism and shear movements dominated in the restructuring of Ganymede's surface. It is postulated that during a period in the planet's history when the lithosphere was thin, upwelling convection currents caused incipient rifting accompanied by intensive normal faulting; where rifting went to completion, crustal segments separated, locally spread apart, and sheared past one another. In places subduction and compression may have occurred, but the evidence is inconclusive.
