Three tectonic regimes are recorded; orthogonal high-angle subduction, oblique low-angle subduction, and transform slip. During the first, regionally extensive forearc basins developed; during the second and third, borderland settings formed as a consequence of wrench faulting. In the forearc basins, sedimentological facies constitute regional belts that persist for hundreds of kilometres, with stratigraphic sequences that are 1–15 km thick. Shorelines are relatively straight, shelf facies are broad and well developed, and basin fill is composed of shallow marine, shelf and coalescing submarine-fan facies. Sediment transport in the deeper water facies commonly is parallel to the basin axis. Borderland basins reflect tectonic instability. A principal effect of wrench tectonics is the vertical reciprocation of crustal blocks. Shorelines are generally irregular, and narrow shelves pass abruptly into deep basins. Lithofacies change dramatically along strike, and stratigraphic thicknesses are variable from basin to basin, from tens of metres up to 6 km. Basin-margin facies are marked by unconformities, slump aprons, lithological pinch-outs and submarine canyon channels. Penecontemporaneous slip along the basin-margin faults complicates these lithofacies patterns. Borderland type palaeogeography is most extensively developed in the transform tectonic regime, and therefore the more seaward offshore basins are relatively depleted of terrigenous debris owing to transport barriers.

","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Sedimentation in Oblique-Slip Mobile Zones","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":15,"text":"Monograph"},"language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.1002/9781444303735.ch4","usgsCitation":"Howell, D.G., Crouch, J.K., Greene, H.G., McCulloch, D.S., and Vedder, J.G., 1980, Basin development along the Late Mesozoic and Cainozoic California Margin: A plate tectonic margin of subduction, oblique subduction and transform tectonics, chap. 4 of Sedimentation in Oblique-Slip Mobile Zones, v. 4, p. 43-62, https://doi.org/10.1002/9781444303735.ch4.","productDescription":"20 p.","startPage":"43","endPage":"62","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":407566,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -123.134765625,\n 32.84267363195431\n ],\n [\n -116.103515625,\n 32.84267363195431\n ],\n [\n -116.103515625,\n 38.13455657705411\n ],\n [\n -123.134765625,\n 38.13455657705411\n ],\n [\n -123.134765625,\n 32.84267363195431\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2009-04-20","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Howell, David G.","contributorId":12091,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Howell","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":853232,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Crouch, James K.","contributorId":56645,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Crouch","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":853233,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Greene, H. Comparisons of the magnetic and subglacial topographic profiles illustrate the usefulness of this combination of methods in studying bedrock geology beneath ice-covered areas. Magnetic anomalies range in peak-to-trough amplitude from about 50 nanoteslas over the lowermost exposed portion of the section in the Dufek Massif to about 3600 nanoteslas over the uppermost part of the section in the Forrestal Range. Theoretical magnetic anomalies, computed from a model based on the subice topography fitted to the highest amplitude observed magnetic anomalies, required normal and reversed magnetizations ranging from 10-3 to 10-2 electromagnetic units per cubic centimeter. Grizzly bear distribution, movements, and behavior and human behavior were examined. Because grizzlies utilized areas with elevations much in excess of the study area's average trail elevation, he likelihood of the off-trail party observing a grizzly bear was 3-4 times greater than that of a trail-traveling party. During the hiking season, grizzliess exhibited an elevational migration. The frequencies of on-trail and combined on- and off-trail observations and sign discoveries per party tended to peak during those periods that grizzlies were found at low elevations. Activitiy patterns of grizzlies at the point of first observation or after the bears had become aware of the human presence did not indicate behavioral traits likely to accentuate the possibilities of human-bear confrontations. Some backcountry travelers engaged in activites that could increase detrimental encounters with grizzly bears.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Bears: Their biology and They thrive best where disturbance by man is minimal. It is not a coincidence that the two major grizzly bear populations in the lower 48 states exist in large wilderness systems closely associated with two large national parks and a relatively large game preserve. If management objectives for these areas do not change, and man-bear interactions can be kept low, viable grizzly bear populations can be maintained. Outside of parks and wilderness areas, the picture is less clear. Grizzly bears adapt to some habitat modifications. the extent of their adaptability to habitat modification or human interaction is largely unknown. Answers to many pertinent questions will be slow in coming. In the meantime, management policies based on common sense rather than on adversary reactions among agencies are the best insurance of the grizzlies' survival.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Bears: Their biology and management","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"conferenceTitle":"Fourth International Conference on Bear Research and Management","conferenceDate":"February 1977","conferenceLocation":"Kalispell, MT","language":"English","publisher":"International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources","publisherLocation":"Morges, Switzerland","doi":"10.2307/3872833","usgsCitation":"Knight, R.R., 1980, Biological considerations in the delineation of critical habitat, chap. of Bears: Their biology and management, v. 4, p. 1-3, https://doi.org/10.2307/3872833.","productDescription":"3 p.","startPage":"1","endPage":"3","numberOfPages":"3","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":481,"text":"Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":319392,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"56f66134e4b07d796bf76ff8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Knight, Richard R.","contributorId":68660,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Knight","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":623854,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Previous studies show that their amplitude and wavelength vary greatly, but little is known about their shape in plan. A detailed survey of a 30-km2 area of abyssal-depth sediment waves associated with the levee of the Monterey fan valley shows a pattern of sinuous crests and troughs with parallel, well-bedded internal structure. Material in the upper 1 m of sediment consists predominantly of bioturbated, muddy coccolith ooze. A single thin, silty horizon can be correlated between adjoining waves.

On the basis of measured wave dimensions and an estimate of flow velocity we use a simple two-layer model for water movement to infer approximate flow parameters. The sediment waves are considered to be formed most likely by low-velocity (10 cm/s), low-concentration turbidity flows approximately 100–800 m thick. This interpretation emphasizes the role of low-speed, low-concentration turbidity currents in the downslope movement of fine-grained material. This type of transport—deposition regime explains the formation of sediment waves very well except for certain waves occurring on depositional ridges in the deep ocean.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0025-3227(80)90009-2","usgsCitation":"Normark, W.R., Hess, G.R., Stow, D., and Bowen, A., 1980, Sediment waves on the Monterey fan levee: a preliminary physical interpretation.: Marine Geology, v. 37, no. 1-2, p. 1-18, https://doi.org/10.1016/0025-3227(80)90009-2.","productDescription":"18 p.","startPage":"1","endPage":"18","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":222399,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"37","issue":"1-2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505b89f0e4b08c986b316f53","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Normark, William R.","contributorId":69570,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Normark","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":363001,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hess, Gordon R.","contributorId":102119,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hess","given":"Gordon","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":362999,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Stow, D.A.V.","contributorId":35441,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stow","given":"D.A.V.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":363000,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Bowen, A.J.","contributorId":87292,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bowen","given":"A.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":363002,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

Sample sizes were small, and the differences associated with sex and reproductive condition were not signficant. Molluscs, Isopods, ephemeropteran and odonate nymphs, and coleopteran, trichopteran, and dipteran larvae contributed 74% of the dry weight and 64% of the gross energy ingested. Data from proximate analyses of 9 invertebrate and 9 plant foods were combined with food habits data to estimate the nutrients available to breeding hens. Males predominated among young alligators from wild populations, whereas females were much more abundant than males in the farm population, where resources were superabundant. These results and other considerations lead us to hypothesize that environmental factors influence sex determination in alligators. During favorable environmental conditions natural selection is expected to favor a preponderance of the sex whose individuals exhibit the greater environmentally associated variation in relative fitness. We hypothesize that environmentally associated variation in age at sexual maturity of females produces sufficient variation in relative fitness of females to result in selection for low sex ratios during periods of resource abundance.","language":"English","publisher":"University of Chicago Press","doi":"10.1086/283615","usgsCitation":"Nichols, J.D., and Chabreck, R.H., 1980, On the variability of alligator sex ratios: American Naturalist, v. 116, no. 1, p. 125-137, https://doi.org/10.1086/283615.","productDescription":"13 p.","startPage":"125","endPage":"137","numberOfPages":"13","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":193388,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"116","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4af3e4b07f02db691ae5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nichols, James D. 0000-0002-7631-2890 jnichols@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7631-2890","contributorId":140652,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nichols","given":"James","email":"jnichols@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":334192,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Chabreck, R. (U.S. Fish and Wildl. Serv., Resource Publ. 131, 1978) presented 14 models based on an array of explicit assumptions for the study of survival in avian populations. These methods are replacing the life table methods previously used to estimate survival rates (e.g., Burnham and Anderson, J. Wildl. Manage., 43: 356-366, 1979). The new methods allow survival or recovery rates, or both, to be constant, time-specific, or time- and age-specific.
\n
\n
In studies to estimate survival rates for birds the data are often from recoveries of birds shot or found dead during the hunting season and reported to the Bird Banding Laboratory by sportsmen, conservation agency employees, or the general public. This note examines the bias in estimating annual survival due to a proportion of the recoveries being incorrectly reported a year late. Specifically, a few recoveries each year of, for example, adult male American Widgeon (Anas americana) banded in California are reported as being recovered in year i + 1 when in fact they were actually recovered the previous year i. Delayed reporting might typically be caused by people finding a band in their health clothing in the fall of the year and, being embarrassed about their failure to report the band when it was taken, report it a year late not mentioning the actual year of recovery. Heuristically, delayed reporting should bias estimated annual survival rates upwards because it appears from the data that the birds corresponding to the \"delayed\" recoveries actually lived an additional year.
","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of Field Ornithology","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Northeastern Bird-Banding Association","publisherLocation":"Ipswich, NH","usgsCitation":"Anderson, D.R., and Burnham, K.P., 1980, Effect of delayed reporting of band recoveries on survival estimates: Journal of Field Ornithology, v. 51, no. 3, p. 244-247.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"244","endPage":"247","numberOfPages":"4","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":291991,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"51","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53eb2a68e4b0461e447649f6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Anderson, David R.","contributorId":92722,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Anderson","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":497875,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Burnham, Kenneth P.","contributorId":95025,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Burnham","given":"Kenneth","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[{"id":189,"text":"Colorado Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":497876,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

A mainland continental source is subordinate. Most sediment in the marine environment was transported to the depositional sites by longshore currents, debris flows, and turbidity currents during times when sea level was near the outermost continental shelf. Fluctuations of sea level are ascribed both to worldwide glacio-eustatic effects and to regional vertical tectonics. Large drainage systems, such as the Yukon and Kuskokwim Rivers, had little direct influence on sedimentation along the continental slope and Unmak Plateau in the southern Bering Sea. Sediments from those drainage systems probably were transported to the floor of the Aleutian Basin, to the numerous shelf basins that underlie the outer continental shelf, and to the Arctic Ocean after passing through the Bering Strait. Environments of deposition at the sites along the outer continental margin have not changed significantly since the middle Miocene. The site on the Alaska Peninsula, however, is now emergent following shallow-marine and transitional sedimentation during the Neogene.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0025-3227(80)90091-2","usgsCitation":"Vallier, T., Underwood, M., Gardner, J., and Barron, J., 1980, Neogene sedimentation on the outer continental margin, southern Bering Sea: Marine Geology, v. 36, no. 3-4, p. 269-287, https://doi.org/10.1016/0025-3227(80)90091-2.","productDescription":"19 p.","startPage":"269","endPage":"287","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":222368,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Aleutian Islands, Bering Sea","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -171.0503880814034,\n              58.194831930920884\n            ],\n            [\n              -171.0503880814034,\n              53.58054380493613\n            ],\n            [\n              -159.07132553259655,\n              53.58054380493613\n            ],\n            [\n              -159.07132553259655,\n              58.194831930920884\n            ],\n            [\n              -171.0503880814034,\n              58.194831930920884\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"36","issue":"3-4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a644ee4b0c8380cd7297e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Vallier, T.L.","contributorId":69526,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Vallier","given":"T.L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":364057,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Underwood, M.B.","contributorId":47386,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Underwood","given":"M.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":364056,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Gardner, J.V.","contributorId":76705,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gardner","given":"J.V.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":364058,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Barron, J.A. 0000-0002-9309-1145","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9309-1145","contributorId":95461,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Barron","given":"J.A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":364059,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

Altered sections had been channelized or used by livestock. Channelization significantly reduced overhead cover, sinuosity, wetted area, and woody bank cover while increasing bank grasses. Total habitat area declined in altered areas. These impacts most damaged the quality of habitat for cutthroat trout (Salmo clarki) over 70 mm in length. Biomass of coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) did not decline significantly in altered sections except in areas severely damaged. Zero‐age trout (cutthroat and steelhead, Salmo gairdneri) suffered no loss of habitat quality, although larger trout did, except in areas of severe physical impact. Short‐term effects of machinery operation in the one stream for which data were obtained included biomass depletions of all salmonid species and size classes. Channelization and livestock use appeared to reduce quality of winter habitat for salmonids. In altered sections with stable bottoms, no recent damage history, relatively little silt and sand, and adequate riffle areas, the reduction in overhead cover appeared to lead to higher standing crops of salmonids, suggesting that fish production in many streams of the Puget Sound area may be light‐limited.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Fisheries Society","doi":"10.1577/1548-8659(1980)109<357:CALIOS>2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Chapman, D., and Knudsen, E., 1980, Channelization and livestock impacts on salmonid habitat and biomass in western Washington: Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, v. 109, no. 4, p. 357-363, https://doi.org/10.1577/1548-8659(1980)109<357:CALIOS>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"357","endPage":"363","costCenters":[{"id":106,"text":"Alaska Biological Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":131249,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Washington","otherGeospatial":"Puget Sound","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -122.83381799213461,\n              48.24666582500217\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.83381799213461,\n              47.325922659982325\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.25157761965484,\n              47.325922659982325\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.25157761965484,\n              48.24666582500217\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.83381799213461,\n              48.24666582500217\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"109","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e4e4b07f02db5e5ff7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Chapman, D.W.","contributorId":51694,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Chapman","given":"D.W.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":318540,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Knudsen, E.","contributorId":98264,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Knudsen","given":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":318541,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
