In very recent years these studies have emphasized the relations between the 'state of health' of bottom-living invertebrates (the benthos) and the levels of pollutants in the bay. Benthic organisms, generally sessile, are unable to escape deleterious environmental changes, and they reflect these changes in alterations of normal species composition of assemblages and species abundance. Data that expands understanding of these relations in urbanized areas such as San Francisco Bay are critical. Because of the implications of such data in control of water quality, the U.S. Geological Survey undertook a review of the results and major conclusions of San Francisco Bay benthic surveys. The size and species composition of faunal assemblages are largely controlled by the salinity of the water, the texture of the bottom sediments, and locally by wastes discharged into the bay. Efforts to describe the structure and function of benthic communities of the bay and to quantify the effects of waste discharge on them have been hampered by inconsistent and often faulty sampling methodology and species identification. Studies made show a lack of information on the normal life processes of the organisms concerned. The diversity index (a mathematical expression of the number of kinds of organisms present at a location), commonly used to describe the 'health' of the benthic community, has been employed without regard for the need for standardizing methodology and species identifications or for understanding natural biological processes that affect such mathematical indices. There are few reliable quantitative data on the distribution of benthic organisms in San Francisco Bay with which future assessments of the 'health' of the benthic community might be compared. That part of the ground-water basin underlying the valleys consists of three subbasins each of which contains two or more ground-water subunits. The subbasin and subunit boundaries are formed by known or postulated faults, folded sedimentary rocks, and igneous rocks. \r\n\r\nThe principal water-bearing units are lenticular beds of sand and gavel interbedded with clay, silt, sand, and gravel, or their locally consolidated equivalents, which range from Pliocene to Holocene, in age.\r\n\r\nGround water occurs mainly under artesian or semiartesian conditions but also under unconfined (water-table) conditions in areas adjacent to most surface streams and, locally, under perched or semiperched conditions.\r\n\r\nIn 1968 the depth to water in wells ranged from approximately 20 feet above land surface to more than 200 feet below land surface. The Washington-Baltimore metropolitan area is used as a case study. The method of free-flow electrophoresis obviates, the problem of adsorption upon a supporting medium and permits the use of high potential gradients and currents because of an efficient cooling system. Separations were monitored by determining organic carbon concentration with a dissolved carbon analyzer, and color was measured by absorbance at 400 nanometers. Organic materials from waters and soils were purified by filtration, hydrogen exchange, and dialysis and were concentrated by freeze drying or freeze concentration. In electrophoretic fractionations of natural organic materials typically found in surface waters and soils, color was found to increase with the charge of the fraction.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. Many test wells were drilled from 1900 until Humble Oil and Refining Company developed Florida's first producing well (Gulf Coast Realties Corp. No. 1) in September 1943 at Sunniland. (See fig. 1.) The first production well was drilled to 11,626 feet below sea level and had an initial production of 97 barrels of oil per day. Since this first well was developed many more have been drilled in the Sunniland field, and at this time (1973) 17 wells are producing about 50,000 barrels of oil per month (W. R. Oglesby, written commun., 1972). The Sunniland field, in north central Collier County, remained the chief oil producing field in Florida until 1966 when the Sunoco-Felda field, about 20 miles north of the Sunniland field, began producing more oil (Babcock, 1970). Oil produced in both fields is transported by pipeline to Port Everglades, on the east coast.</p><p>Anticipation of oil exploration in the Big Cypress area (fig. 1) aroused concern the effects a producing field would have on the quality of surface water in the area. The Florida Department of Natural Resources requested the U.S. Geological Survey to determine whether there have been any such effects. The 29-year old Sunniland oil field was chosen for this preliminary evaluation. A second phase of the investigation was to monitor the effects of building roads, drilling operations and other exploratory activities related to development of an oil field, on the quality of surface water in the areas of proposed exploration.
