Water that is slightly turbid can be successfully injected for a period of time, but generally results in constantly declining yields and capacity for recharge. Redevelopment through pumping and surging significantly prolongs the life of recharge wells under some conditions. The island is mountainous, and slopes commonly exceed 35 degrees along a central ridge 800 to 1,200 feet high running the length of the island. The general appearance is a panorama of numerous steep interstream spurs and rounded peaks. \r\n\r\nThe island is made up of rocks of Cretaceous age, mostly volcanic flows and breccia s. A thin limestone and tuffaceous wacke complete the sequence of major rock types. All the rocks have been tilted and dip about 50 degrees north. \r\n\r\nWater in Charlotte Amalie, the capital, is supplied by sea-water desalting and water barged from Puerto Rico and is augmented by hillside rain catchments and individual roof catchments. Rainwater augmented by water hauling and a few wells is the source of water for the rural areas. \r\n\r\nStreamflow is meager--2 to 8 percent of the annual rainfall-and is predominantly storm runoff. Runoff after rainstorms seldom exceeds 5 percent of the rainfall. Runoff is rapid, however, and flash floods occasionally occur. \r\n\r\nTest drilling has shown that water can be obtained from fractured volcanic rocks in nearly all parts of the island. Wells will yield, generally, less than 1,000 gpd (gallons per day). In the upper Turpentine Run Valley and the Lovenlund Valley, short-term yields of individual wells are as great as 100 gallons per minute. \r\n\r\nEstimates of potential yield from these areas are 300,000 and 100,000 gpd, respectively. Two smaller areas--Long Bay and Lindberg Bay on the outskirts of Charlotte Amalie have estimated ground-water yields of 70,000 and 30,000 gpd, respectively. Fully developed, the surface- and ground-water resources of the island could yield 1.3 million gallons of water per day. \r\n\r\nGround water is slightly saline, commonly containing more than 1,000 milligrams per liter dissolved solids. The principal source of the minerals is bulk fallout of sea- and land-derived dust from the atmosphere. Solution of minerals from the rocks of the aquifers is the second largest contributor. For a low river-discharge period in August 1970, use of the model yielded an estimated residence time of wedge water to be 6.3 days in the present waterways estuary and 8.6 days in the wider and deeper proposed-waterways estuary--a 37-percent increase. Available data suggest that 0.2 to 0.9 foot (0.06 to 0.3 m) of subsidence probably has occurred from 1935-42 to 1964 in an extensive agricultural area of heavy ground-water pumping between Zamora and Davis, and that as much as 2 feet (0.6 m) of subsidence has occurred in at least two areas of pumping overdraft--east of Zamora, and west of Arbuckle. \r\n\r\nA comparison of maps showing long-term water-level decline and average annual ground-water pumpage indicates several other areas of probable subsidence. In six general areas--northwest of Sacramento; northeast of Sacramento; southeast of Yuba City; 10 miles (16 km) north of Willows; 20 miles (32 km) north of Willows; and especially in the Arbuckle area,ground-water declines have quite probably produced significant subsidence. In two areas of most intensive pumping, no long-term water-level declines have occurred, and no subsidence is indicated.\r\n\r\nIf problems of land subsidence are of concern in Sacramento Valley, and if estimates of historic subsidence or subsidence potential are needed, serious consideration should be given to a field program of basic-data collection. Ground-water storage increased by 320 acre-feet, and 360,860 acrefeet left the valley as surface- and ground-water outflow. \r\n\r\nGround-water recharge was approximately 26,170 acre-feet.The total inflow to .the lower Mesilla Valley in 197l was 282,880 acre-feet, of which 41,800 acre-feet was consumptively used by crops and phreatophytes and 4,500 acre-feet was lost by evaporation. Ground-water storage decreased by 3,970 acre-feet and 244,320 acre-feet left the valley as surface- and ground-water outflow. Ground-water recharge was approximately 33,500 acre-feet. \r\n\r\nThe average yearly inflow to the El Paso Valley in 1968-71 was 301,770 acre-feet. The average consumptive use by irrigated crops and phreatophytes was 138,870 acre-feet; the average evaporation loss was 27,000 acre-feet; the average change in ground-water storage was a decrease-of 3,225 acre-feet; and the average outflow from the valley was 96,640 acre-feet. M. Culbertson, hydraulic engineer, U.S. Geological Survey, Menlo Park, Calif., and preparatory work in Alaska (during June 1-18, 1971) was done with the cooperation of Harry Hulsing, district chief, Alaska District. Examination of river crossings between the Yukon River and Prudhoe Bay was done by helicopter, for the use of which I am indebted to Giles McDonald of the Bureau of Land Management. Most of the crossing sites described here were examined in the field, in too brief a time to permit quantitative measurements but long enough to be of much assistance in interpretation of the aerial photographs. Location of the earlier photographs with reference to the terrane was difficult because of the inaccuracy of existing index sheets, but it was greatly facilitated by Ray Krieg of the R &amp; M Engineering Geological Consultants in Fairbanks and by personnel of the Alyeska Pipeline System Office in Anchorage. This report was prepared at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., with support by Research Grant 8623-EN, Airphoto interpretation of the form and behavior of alluvial rivers, from the U.S. Army Research Office in Durham, N. The study also includes the adjacent Coastal Plain because it is a more accessible extension of the shelf. The total study area is about 324,000 sq km, of which the shelf and slope constitute about 181,000 sq km and the Coastal Plain constitutes 143,000 sq km. The shelf width ranges from about 30 km at Cape Hatteras to about 195 km off Raritan Bay and on Georges Bank. Analyses of bottom samples make it possible to construct a preliminary geologic map of the shelf and slope to a water depth of 2,000 m. The oldest beds cropping out in the submarine canyons and on the slope are of early Late Cretaceous age. Beds of Early Cretaceous and Jurassic age are present in deep wells onshore and probably are present beneath the shelf in the area of this study. Such beds are reported beneath the Scotian Shelf to the northeast where they include limestone, salt, and anhydrite. Preliminary conclusions suggest a considerably thicker Mesozoic sedimentary sequence than has been previously described.
