The two-dimensional finite-difference model of Trescott, Pinder, and Larson was used with slight modification. The way ground-water evapotranspiration varies with depth was modified, and a minimum transmissivity was used to prevent the model from \"going dry\" during water-table simulations.
\n
Tests of the model showed good correlation with field data, but also showed that certain additional types of information would be useful to make the model more reliable. Particularly helpful would be more water-level and evapotranspiration data, synoptic base-flow measurements in the subbasins, and better information on the variation of permeability and specific yield with depth.
\n
Predictive simulations made by the model show the effects of imposing various changes on the hydrologic system. Residential development was simulated in 1 square mile of the basin by combinations of the following conditions: 1-acre, 1/2-acre, and 1/4-acre lot size; wastewater disposal by septic systems or by public sewers; domestic wells or public-supply wells for water supply; and 0, 1, and 5 percent reduction in recharge in the developed area. Where water is supplied locally by wells, decreased lot size and reduced recharge result in increased drawdowns and reduced base flow. When wastewater is exported by sewers, these effects are magnified. The simulations by the model show the relative severity of the effects of various development schemes.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological During the 16-year period 1963-78 lake evaporation exceeded rainfall by 0.4 inches. Drainage from Lake Deaton and its surrounding area goes into Chitty Chatty Creek and on the Hogeye Sink when the altitude of the potentiometric surface of the Floridan aquifer is low. During a higher altitude of the Floridan potentiometric surface, Hogeye Sink may discharge water; this water, along with the normal runoff, goes into Lake Okahumpka. Average lake fluctuation is 1.5 to 2.0 feet per year. Lake Deaton supports a large population of blue-green algae and Lake Okahumpka is choked with aquatic plants. The water quality of the two lakes differ, with Lake Deaton having a sodium chloride water and Lake Okahumpka having a calcium bicarbonate water. Analysis of water and bottom material samples showed that only cadmium and mercury exceeded the Florida Department of Environmental Regulation 's criteria for Class III waters; however, the amounts detected were at or slightly above the limits of the analytical method. The measurements were made in mid-winter, mostly in January, when pumping was minimal and water levels had recovered from the effects of pumping during the previous irrigation season. This report also provides basic hydrologic data for relating water-level changes from a \"base-reference year\" (pre-development year), a year of abnormally high rainfall and minimum pumpage (1966), and the previous year (1979). The \"base-reference year\" i s designated as 1950 for the northwestern and west-central areas, 1940 for the southwestern area, and 1944 for the south-central area. Water-level data in the south-central area also are compared with data for 1974. \"Base-reference-year\" water levels are based on measurements made during that year and on interpretation of water-table-contour maps.

Tables in the report show the depths to water level in 1940, 1944, or 1950 (pre-development years), 1966, 1974, 1979, and 1980; water-level changes from 1940-80,1944-80,1950-80,1966-80,1974-80, and 1979-80; and the average annual changes from 1940-80, 1944-80, 1950-80, 1966-80, and 1974-80. Also shown are saturated thicknesses of the deposits in 1940, 1944, or 1950, and in 1980, as well as the percentage change in saturated thickness from 1940-80, 1944-80, or 1950-80.

Maps in the report, drawn by digital plotter, show the location of observation wells where water-level measurements are made. The water-level rise or decline, 1979-80, is given to the nearest 0.01 foot; two values at the same location indicate separate wells in the same 10-acre tract.

The annual water-level measurements are made by personnel of the Division of Water Resources of the Kansas State Board of Agriculture and of the U.S. Geological Survey. State-agency support for this program is provided through the Kansas Geological Survey.

Wells in this report are numbered according to the Bureau of Land Manage- ment's system of land subdivision. In this system, the first set of digits of a well number indicates the township; the second set, the range east or west of the sixth principal meridian; and the third set, the section in which the well is situated. The first letter denotes the 160-acre tract within the section; the second, the 40-acre tract, and the third, the 10-acre tract. The letters, A, B, C, or D, are designated in a counterclockwise direction beginning in the northeast quadrant. Because there may be more than one well in a 10-acre tract, consecutive numbers, beginning with \"1\", are added in the order in which the data from the wells are collect.

Explanation of geologic units in tables 1 and 2 are: QA, Quaternary alluvium; QU, undifferentiated Quaternary deposits; TO, Ogallala Formation; KN, Niobrara Formation; KU, undifferentiated Lower Cretaceous rocks; KJ, undiffer-rentiated Lower Cretaceous and Upper Jurassic rocks.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr80958","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Pabst, M., Geologic and topographic features that control the movement and regional availability of ground water are explained and illustrated. Five aquifer systems beneath the most populous areas are described. Estimates of ground-water yield were determined for the region by using ground-water data for the populated areas and by extrapolating known subsurface conditions and interpreting subsurface conditions from surficial features in the other areas. Area maps of generalized geology, Quaternary sediment thickness, and general availability of ground water are shown. Surface-water resources are summarized by describing how basin characteristics affect the discharge in streams. Seasonal trend of streamflow for three types of streams is described. Regression equations for 4 streamflow characteristics (annual, monthly minimum, and maximum discharge) were obtained by using gaging station streamflow characteristics and 10 basin characteristics. In the 24 regression equations presented, drainage area is the most significant basin characteristic, but 5 others are used. Maps of mean annual unit runoff and minimum unit yield for 7 consecutive days with a recurrence interval of 10 years are shown. Historic discharge data at gaging stations is tabulated and representative low-flow and flood-flow frequency curves are shown. Regression analysis between estimated and measured precipitation at the lake showed that the accuracy of regionalization techniques is dependent on the closeness of the data network to the lake. For individual storms, the average-value method was found to be better than either the weighted average or isohyetal methods of determining precipitation, but it was least accurate in estimating 14-day average precipitation. The amount of evaporation calculated by the mass-transfer method ranged from 2 to 7 inches per month from July to October 1978, depending on the method used to determine the mass-transfer coefficient. Test drilling indicated that 30 to 150 feet of sand and gravel overlies till in the Williams Lake watershed. A sand lens about 50 feet thick occurs within the till.
\n
The configuration of the water table and vertical-head gradients measured from July to December 1978 indicate that ground water moves into the lake from the south and east and moves from the lake into the ground-water reservoir to the west. Preliminary numerical models indicate that the sand lens within the till is effectively isolated from the flow system interacting with the lake and that both inseepage and outseepage were about 1.4 inches from mid-July to mid-October 1978. Parts of the area have undergone rapid population growth in recent years due to an increase of winter sports activities. This rapid growth has resulted in a demand for additional domestic, recreational, and municipal water supplies. Maximum yields of 100 gallons per minute are available from wells completed in the alluvial aquifers while as much as 60 gallons per minute may be obtained from wells completed in the Dakota and Entrada Sandstones. The hydrologic budget for this period showed a perennial yield of about 9,800 acre-feet per year and an annual ground-water discharge of about 11,400 acre-feet per year, comprising net pumpage of 7,100 acre-feet, phreatophyte evapotranspiration of 3,000 acre-feet, and base streamflow of 1 ,300 acre-feet. The base flow in San Antonio Creek could diminish to zero when net pumpage reaches 13,500 acre-feet per year. The environmentally sensitive marshland area of Barka Slough may then become stressed as water normally lost through evapotranspiration is captured by pumpage. The aquifer consists of alluvial valley fill that ranges in thickness from 0 to 3,500 feet. Ground water moves seaward from recharge areas along mountain fronts to a consolidated rock barrier about 5 miles east of the Pacific coast. Upwelling of ground water just east of the barrier has resulted in the 550-acre Barka Slough. Transmissivity of the aquifer ranges from 2,600 to 34,000 feet squared per day, with the lowest values occurring in the central part of the valley where the aquifer is thickest but probably finer grained. The salinity problems are increasing in the agricultural parts of the valley, which is east of the barrier. West of the barrier, stream and ground-water quality is poor, owing to seepage of saline water from the marine shale that underlies the area at shallow depths. A proposed basinwide monitoring program includes 17 water-level sites, 12 water-quality sampling sites, 3 streamflow measuring sites, and periodic infrared aerial photography of Barka Slough. A computer model of the ground-water flow system could be developed to assess the impact of various water-management alternatives.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr80750","usgsCitation":"Hutchinson, C.B., 1980, Appraisal of ground-water resources in the San Antonio Creek Valley, Santa Barbara County, California (WRI/OFR): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-750, iv, 48 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr80750.","productDescription":"iv, 48 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":52752,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0750/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":157478,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0750/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":405235,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_11757.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Santa Barbara County","otherGeospatial":"San Antonio Creek Valley","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -120.646,\n 34.678\n ],\n [\n -120.112,\n 34.678\n ],\n [\n -120.112,\n 34.853\n ],\n [\n -120.646,\n 34.853\n ],\n [\n -120.646,\n 34.678\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","edition":"WRI/OFR","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac6e4b07f02db67a394","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hutchinson, C. The attempt to improve the quality of river water with this experiment was not successful because brine leakage from Anderson Lake to the nearby Pecos River through permeable subsurface rocks was greater than the previous natural spring inflow. Brine leakage from Anderson Lake from July 22, 1963, through September 30, 1968, was estimated by evaporation-pan, salt accumulation, and dissolved-constituent methods. The leakage values given by these three methods are in good agreement with each other and indicate that between the dates given, leakage from the lake was about 2 ,300 acre-feet, compared with a brine inflow to the lake of about 3,690 acre-feet. Other data indicate that pumping from the brine aquifer greatly reduced the natural inflow from brine springs to the Malaga Bend reach. The rate of brine leakage from Anderson Lake is probably greater than might be expected from other brine lakes in the area because the cavities in the bottom of the lake apparently are in hydrologic connection with the Pecos River.
