As pond size increased, total pair and brood use per pond increased. Pairs used ponds as small as 0.1 acre in size, but broods were seldom seen on ponds of less than 1.0 surface acre. Dam-type ponds larger than 1.0 surface acre comprised only 29% of all man-made ponds on the study area but received 65% of the pair use and 87% of the brood use. Utilization of fenced ponds by pairs and broods was not significantly different from utilization of unfenced ponds. Grazing rates of 2 to 3 acres per AUM and lower rates permitted the development of grassy shoreline cover preferred by pairs and brushy and emergent shorelines preferred by broods. Duck pairs were significantly more numerous on older ponds and ponds with grassy shorelines but less numerous on ponds that had heavy deposits of sediment or were isolated from other wetlands. Broods were significantly more numerous on ponds with brushy shorelines and emergent vegetation than on those without. Broods were less numerous on turbid and newly constructed ponds. The most suitable stock-watering units for maximum waterfowl production were dam-type ponds of 1.5 surface acres, or larger, built in gentle to rolling terrain away from major sources of siltation.","language":"English","publisher":"Allen Press","doi":"10.2307/3896686","usgsCitation":"Lokemoen, J.T., 1973, Waterfowl production on stock-watering ponds in the northern plains: Journal of Range Management, v. 26, no. 3, p. 179-184, https://doi.org/10.2307/3896686.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"179","endPage":"184","costCenters":[{"id":480,"text":"Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":133802,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"26","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b28e4b07f02db6b1394","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lokemoen, J. The newly determined value of the lead isotopic composition of Canyon Diablo troilite is as follows:<span>&nbsp;</span><sup>206</sup>Pb/<sup>204</sup>Pb = 9.307,<span>&nbsp;</span><sup>207</sup>Pb/<sup>2O4</sup>Pb = 10.294, and<span>&nbsp;</span><sup>208</sup>Pb/<sup>204</sup>Pb = 29.476. The leads of Angra dos Reis, Sioux County, and Nuevo Laredo achondrites are very radiogenic, the<span>&nbsp;</span><sup>206</sup>Pb/<sup>204</sup>Pb values are about 200, and the uranium-thorium-lead systems are nearly concordant. The ages of the meteorites as calculated from a single-stage<span>&nbsp;</span><sup>207</sup>Pb/<sup>206</sup>Pb isochron based on the newly determined primordial lead value and the newly reported<span>&nbsp;</span><sup>235</sup>U and<span>&nbsp;</span><sup>838</sup>U decay constants, are 4.528 x 10<sup>9</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>years for Sioux County and Nuevo Laredo and 4.555 x 10<sup>9</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>years for Angra dos Reis. When calculated with the uranium decay constants used by Patterson, these ages are 4.593 x 10<sup>9</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>years and 4.620 x 10<sup>9</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>years, respectively, and are therefore 40 to 70 x 10<sup>6</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>years older than the 4.55 x 10<sup>9</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>years age Patterson reported. The age difference of 27 x 10<sup>6</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>years between Angra dos Reis and the other two meteorites is compatible with the difference between the initial<span>&nbsp;</span><sup>87</sup>Sr/<sup>86</sup>Sr ratio of Angra dos Reis and that of seven basaltic achondrites observed by Papanastassiou and Wasserburg. The time difference is also comparable to that determined by<span>&nbsp;</span><sup>129</sup>1-<sup>129</sup>Xe chronology. The ages of ordinary chondrites (H5 and L6) range from 4.52 to 4.57 x 10<sup>9</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>years, and, here too, time differences in the formation of the parent bodies or later metamorphic events are indicated. Carbonaceous chondrites(C2 and C3) appear to contain younger lead components.</p></div></div><span id=\"related-urls\"></span></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>","language":"English","publisher":"AAAS","doi":"10.1126/science.180.4092.1279","issn":"00368075","usgsCitation":"Tatsumoto, M., Knight, R.J., and Allegre, C., 1973, Time differences in the formation of meteorites as determined from the ratio of lead-207 to lead-206: Science, v. 180, no. 4092, p. 1279-1283, https://doi.org/10.1126/science.180.4092.1279.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"1279","endPage":"1283","numberOfPages":"5","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":221705,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"180","issue":"4092","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505bb399e4b08c986b325eb3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Tatsumoto, M.","contributorId":76798,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tatsumoto","given":"M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":359895,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Knight, R. The Fra Mauro&nbsp;Formation, as a whole, consists of unwcldcd, porous ejecta, slightly less&nbsp;porous than the regolith. It contains hand-specimen and larger size&nbsp;clasts of strongly annealed complex breccias, partly to slightly annealed&nbsp;breccias, basalts, and perhaps spherule-rich breccias. These clasts are&nbsp;embedded in a matrix of porous aggregate dominated by mineral and&nbsp;breccia fragments and probably largely free of undevitrified glass. All&nbsp;strongly annealed hand-specimen-size breccias are clasts in the Fra&nbsp;Mauro Formation. To account for the porous, unwelded state of the&nbsp;Fra Mauro Formation, the ejecta must have been deposited at a&nbsp;temperature below that required for welding and annealing. Large&nbsp;boulders probably compacted by the Cone crater event occur near the&nbsp;rim of the crater. They probably consist of a similar suite of fragments,&nbsp;but are probably less porous than the formation. The geochronologic&nbsp;clocks of fragments in the Fra Mauro Formation, with textures ranging&nbsp;from unannealed to strongly annealed, were not reset or strongly&nbsp;modified by the Imbrian event. Strongly annealed breccia clasts and&nbsp;basalt clasts are pre-Imbrian, and probably existed as ejecta mixed with&nbsp;basalt flows in the Imbrium Basin prior to the Imbrian event. The plagioclase arkose near&nbsp;Gualala contains little or no K-feldspar, and the conglomerate is&nbsp;characterized by quartz-bearing mafic rocks that lack K-feldspar&nbsp;volcanic rocks, diabase, and diorite to gabbro. Hornblendes from these&nbsp;clasts yield K/Ar ages of 141&plusmn;4,175&plusmn;7, and 186&plusmn;7 m.y. The arkose and&nbsp;conglomerate appear to have been eroded from a chert-poor ophiolite&nbsp;(oceanic crust) sequence that, according to paleocurrent evidence, lay east of the present San Andreas fault. Near Eagle Rest Peak, 350 miles<br />southeast of Gualala, similar mafic quartz-bearing volcanic rocks,&nbsp;diabase, and gabbro are exposed in a small structurally isolated area<br />that abuts the San Andreas fault on the southwest. In the first study, 36 of 60 flightless adult and juvenile ducks held on eight 0.1-acre experimental ponds disappeared between 10 July and 4 August 1969. Available evidence indicated that all were killed by a large adult mink. The mink selected recently released incubator-hatched ducklings, females in the process of incubating, and adults and juveniles on a marginal food supply.In the second study, 152 wood duck ducklings (<i>Aix sponsa</i>) were released on a 76-acre marsh during 1971. Half of the ducklings, when 24 to 27 days old, were placed at weekly intervals in four floating pens and allowed to escape after 4 days. Each time birds were placed in the floating pens, a comparable group was placed in a predator-proof shoreline pen. Birds in the shoreline pen escaped as they learned to fly when approximately 60 days old. The shoreline of the marsh was periodically searched, and the remains of 21 (28%) of the floating-pen birds were identified in food remains found at 16 mink dens. No remains of birds from the shoreline pen were found at the dens. Coots (<i>Fulica americana</i>) were also taken commonly. Wild ducklings appeared to have been almost totally consumed, but the legs and feet of the wood ducks were often left uneaten because of bands and tags.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"University of Notre Dame","doi":"10.2307/2424149","usgsCitation":"Sargeant, A.B., Swanson, G.A., and Doty, H.A., 1973, Selective predation by mink, Mustela vison, on waterfowl: American Midland Naturalist, v. 89, no. 1, p. 208-214, https://doi.org/10.2307/2424149.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"208","endPage":"214","costCenters":[{"id":480,"text":"Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":133311,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"89","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e2e4b07f02db5e4c1e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sargeant, Alan B.","contributorId":89185,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sargeant","given":"Alan","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":310802,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Swanson, George A.","contributorId":49654,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Swanson","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":310804,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Doty, Harold A.","contributorId":17565,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Doty","given":"Harold","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":310803,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Application of this numerical model to the Wairakei geothermal field demonstrates that hot-water geothermal fields can be simulated using numerical techniques currently available and under development.</p></div></div></div><ul id=\"issue-navigation\" class=\"issue-navigation u-margin-s-bottom u-bg-grey1\"></ul>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0375-6505(73)90011-4","issn":"03756505","usgsCitation":"Mercer, J., and Pinder, G., 1973, Galerkin finite-element simulation of a geothermal reservoir: Geothermics, v. 2, no. 3-4, p. 81-89, https://doi.org/10.1016/0375-6505(73)90011-4.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"81","endPage":"89","numberOfPages":"9","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":218841,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"2","issue":"3-4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a14aae4b0c8380cd54ae1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mercer, J.W. The beds are about 1000 m stratigraphically above rocks of the Grand Canyon Series for which paleomagnetic poles have been reported. All specimens were subjected to stepwise thermal (200°–700°C) or alternating field (25–5000 Oe) demagnetization for the determination of characteristic magnetization. The pole for two flows and an intercalated sandstone bed of the Cardenas Lavas of Ford, Breed and Mitchell (upper Unkar Group), is at 174.6W, 0.4N (<i>N</i><span>&nbsp;</span>= 10,<span>&nbsp;</span><i>K</i><span>&nbsp;</span>= 50, α95<span>&nbsp;</span>= 6.9°). The pole for a weathered zone developed across the Cardenas Lavas is at 167.8W, 49.4N (<i>N</i><span>&nbsp;</span>= 5,<span>&nbsp;</span><i>K</i><span>&nbsp;</span>= 79, α95<span>&nbsp;</span>= 8.6°). The pole for directly overlying sandstone of the Nankoweap Formation of Maxson is at 174.4E, 12.5N (<i>N</i><span>&nbsp;</span>= 6,<span>&nbsp;</span><i>K</i><span>&nbsp;</span>= 105, α95<span>&nbsp;</span>= 6.6°). These poles lie on or near, and appear to follow, part of an apparent polar wandering path recently proposed for the Precambrian of North America by Spall. If the fit is not accidental, little or no rotation has occurred between north-central Arizona and parts of the North American continent used to define the proposed path.</p></div></div></div><ul id=\"issue-navigation\" class=\"issue-navigation u-margin-s-bottom u-bg-grey1\"></ul>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0012-821X(73)90064-2","issn":"0012821X","usgsCitation":"Elston, D.P., and Robert, S.G., 1973, Paleomagnetism of some Precambrian basaltic flows and red beds, Eastern Grand Canyon, Arizona: Earth and Planetary Science Letters, v. 18, no. 2, p. 253-265, https://doi.org/10.1016/0012-821X(73)90064-2.","productDescription":"13 p.","startPage":"253","endPage":"265","numberOfPages":"13","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":218842,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Arizona","otherGeospatial":"Eastern Grand Canyon","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -112.445068359375,\n 35.64836915737426\n ],\n [\n -111.29699707031249,\n 35.64836915737426\n ],\n [\n -111.29699707031249,\n 36.43454191900892\n ],\n [\n -112.445068359375,\n 36.43454191900892\n ],\n [\n -112.445068359375,\n 35.64836915737426\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"18","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a7427e4b0c8380cd77493","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Elston, D.
