Gair and John F. Slack, assisted by Andrew Grosz, Richard Ketelle, Donald Henry, Thomas Hanley, Ann Stevens, and Gregory R. Morley. The spectrographic and atomic absorption analyses were done in laboratories of the Branch of Exploration Research, U.S. Geological Survey, Denver. The spectrographic analyses were done by David F. Siems and Elwin L. Mosier; the atomic absorption analyses, by Allen L. Meier. Data retrieval from the computerized storage file of the U.S. Geological Survey was made by Nancy A. These declines are the result of pumping for the irrigation of alfalfa. The lowering of water levels has caused many shallow domestic wells to go dry. </p><p>Well yields in the valley generally are between 10 and 1,000 gallons per minute. About 240,000 acre-feet of ground water was extracted between 1950 and 1976. About 1,750,000 acre-feet remains in storage. </p><p>Water of poor quality underlies the valley around Lucerne Lake. There was no definable movement of this water from 1954 to 1976, but the possibility exists for future movement toward centers of pumping. </p><p>Lucerne Valley may be hydrologically suitable for artificial-recharge operations. Preliminary data suggest an area in T. 4 N., R. 1 E. as suitable for artificial recharge that would benefit most of the areas affected by the water-level declines. Locations for all 453 samples are given in Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinates. Rocks analyzed include metasandstone, metaarkose, metagraywacke, metaconglomerate, slate, phyllite, and vein quartz. The under-ice surface would serve as a trap for pollutants such as oil and gas released from the sea bed. A knowledge of the morphology of the undersurface of the ice is a first step in understanding the sea-bed interactions and in evaluating the quantities, configuration, and dispersal patterns of sub-ice pollutants. Investigations show thicker sea-ice correlates with a thin snow cover and thin sea-ice underlies elongate snow ridges.</p><p>In early May, 1978, the relationships between under-ice morphology, sea bed morphology, tidal currents, and variations in snow thickness were studied. At three sites representing three different environments--protected bay, deep, open lagoon, and narrow tidal channel--trenches were cut through the ice. The trenches were parallel and perpendicular to the sastrugi-sculptured northeast-southwest trending snow ridge pattern. Snow depth, ice thickness, and ice drafts were measured and an upward-directed side-scanning sonar was towed to examine the morphology of the under-ice surface in an area 100 m square.</p><p>Snow depth and ice thickness vary about 30-40 cm and exhibit a negative correlation--thin ice coinciding with a thicker insulating snow cover. The areal snow and ice morphology patterns reinforced the correlation. Elongate ridge and trough patterns on the under-ice surface parallel the surface snow ridge patterns on wavelengths typically 10 m wide, yielding sub-ice voids of 25 to 47 x 10<sup>3</sup>m<sup>3</sup>/km<sup>2</sup> (600-1200 barrels per acre). Diving observations indicate a smaller set of depressions 5 cm or less in depth, oriented parallel to the ice crystal fabric, and an escape of sub-ice released air to the snow-ice interface.</p><p>The results imply that there is a seasonal stability to the snow ridge pattern and that oil concentrations under the ice would be indicated by surficial snow morphology in the fast ice zone. Spreading directions would be enhanced in the elongate dimensions of the under-ice ridges and troughs, that is, upwind and downwind. Ages of sized and magnetic fractions of zircon concentrates show variable degrees of discordance, which seem to result from a very young disturbance that produces linear arrays in the Concordia plot. Model age calculations based on a statistically and geologically reasonable lower intercept produce very consistent internal relationships. The Pan African Orogeny, considered to be responsible for loss of radiogenic argon and strontium from minerals of many rocks, does not appear to have affected the zircon data, even though uplift had exposed the rocks of the Arabian Shield at that time.</p><p>Tonalite, granodiorite, and crosscutting leuco-adamellite bodies in the southern part of the An Nimas batholith yield ages in the time range 820-760 m.y. A narrow time range of 660 to 665 million years was indicated for ages of widely separated and compositionally different intrusive bodies all to the east of the An Nimas batholith. Eighty-three stream sites were selected for sampling in Eagle, Grand, Jackson, Pitkin, Routt, and Summit Counties. Also included are data from 28 sites in Routt County collected for a U.S. Geological Survey cooperative study on the Yampa River basin. A summary of data collected prior to this study, results of current chemical and biological sampling, and needs for future water-quality monitoring are reported for each county.</p><p>The kinds of data collected were site specific depending upon land-use activities. Data collected at selected sites included temperature, pH, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen, and stream discharge. Chemical data collected included nutrients, inorganics, organics, and trace elements. Biological data collected included counts and species composition of total and fecal-coliform bacteria, fecal-streptococcus bacteria, benthic invertebrates, and phytoplankton. Most of the sites were sampled three times: in April-June 1976, August 1976, and January 1977.</p><p>The major water-quality problems at the 17 sites sampled in Eagle County are related to mining, recreation, and geology. The Eagle River and Cross Creek in the vicinity of Minturn have concentrations of trace elements that exceed water-quality standards. Gore Creek is influenced by winter recreational use and the water during the winter has total bacteria counts as great as 72,000 per 100 milliliters and concentrations of un-ionized ammonia greater than 0.02 milligrams per liter downstream from the sewage-treatment plant. Mineralized water in the downstream reaches of the Eagle River results from natural chemical processes. The water-quality problems in Grand County, especially on the Fraser River, are related to recreation and urban activities. Ammonia and organic nitrogen, phosphorus, total organic carbon, chemical oxygen demand, and bacteria increased considerably during storm runoff, probably due to livestock wastes. Nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations are probably high enough to cause the proposed lake to be eutrophic. Minor-element concentrations were at or near normal levels in Center and Jones Creeks. The only pesticides detected were 0.01 micrograms per liter of 2, 4, 5-T in one base-flow sample and 0.02 to 0.04 micrograms per liter of 2, 4, 5-T and 2, 4-D in all storm-runoff samples. Fecal coliform and fecal streptococcus densities ranged from 2 to 650 and 2 to 550 colonies per 100 milliliters, respectively, during base flow , but were 17,000 to 45,000 and 27,000 to 70,000 colonies per 100 milliliters, respectively, during storm runoff. Water in Center Creek about 2.5 miles downstream from the proposed damsite is similar in quality to that upstream from the damsite except for higher concentrations of sodium, sulfate, chloride, fluoride, nitrogen, and phosphorus. These higher concentrations are caused by fertilizer industry wastes that enter Center Creek about 1.0 mile downstream from the proposed damsite. Although surface-water characteristics are known, little information is available regarding the ground-water hydrology of the Maxey Flats area. If transport of radionuclides from the burial site were to occur, water would probably be the principal mechanism of transport by natural means. Most base flow in streams around the burial site is from valley alluvium, and from the mantle of regolith, colluvium, and soil partially covering adjacent hills. Very little base flow is due to ground-water flow from bedrock. Most water in springs is from the mantle, rather than from bedrock. Rock units underlying the Maxey Flats area are, in descending order, the Nancy and Farmers Members of the Borden Formation, Sunbury, Bedford, and Ohio Shales, and upper part of the Crab Orchard Formation. These units are mostly shales, except for the Farmers Member, which is mostly sandstone. Total thickness of the rocks is about 320 feet. All radioactive wastes are buried in the Nancy Member. Most ground-water movement in bedrock probably occurs in fractures. The ground-water system at Maxey Flats is probably unconfined, and recharge occurs by (a) infiltration of rainfall into the mantle, and (b) vertical, unsaturated flow from the saturated regolith on hilltops to saturated zones in the Farmers Member and Ohio Shale. Data are insufficient to determine if saturated zones exist in other rock units. The upper part of the Crab Orchard Formation is probably a hydrologic boundary, with little ground-water flow through the formation. The units most affected are mudstones, siltstones, and sandstones of the Fort Union Formation. Ground instability generally is indicated by landslides, soil slides, or subsidence. \r\n\r\nLandslides are mostly of the slump-earthflow type and are localized along the flanks of the high buttes in southwestern North Dakota, including HT (Black) Butte, Chalky Buttes, Sentinel Butte, and East and West Rainy Buttes, and along parts of the valleys of the Des Lacs, Missouri, Little Missouri, and Heart Rivers. Landslides are sparse elsewhere. \r\n\r\nSoil slides are common in the areas south and southwest of the maximum position of the Pleistocene glacial ice margin on slopes of 15 degrees or more, and have taken place on some slopes as gentle as five degrees. The weathered, exposed surface of the Fort Union Formation seems to be especially susceptible to soil slides. Soil slides constitute the major type of ground instability in southwestern North Dakota. \r\n\r\nSubsidence is of two types: (1) subsidence over old underground mine workings, and (2) subsidence over naturally ignited and burned underground coal beds. Major subsidence has taken place over old, underground workings near Beulah, Wilton, Lehigh, Haynes, and Belfield, and lesser subsidence near Scranton, and west and north of Bowman. Thickness of overburden above the coal in all these areas is believed to be less than 30 m (100 ft).
