The measured hydrocarbons are likely to have been derived from deep in the Neogene sedimentary section of the Eel River Basin. Their presence at the surface may indicate migration along fractures in or bordering the diapiric feature and seepage into unconsolidated sediments that are ponded locally within structural and bathymetric depressions. Realizing that potential, Pinellas County entered into a cooperative investigation with the U.S. Geological Survey to determine background water-quality conditions, and to evaluate the potential effects of landfill leachate on the quality of ground water at a landfill site in Pinellas County (fig. 1). The investigation started in May 1975 and landfill operation began in November 1975.</p><p>The purpose of this report is to make available well records, logs of wells, and surface- and ground-water quality data for planning purposes, and to provide basic data for a subsequent interpretive report.</p><p>From May 1975 to October 1977, surface- and ground-water samples were collected periodically to obtain information on certain background water-quality conditions at the landfill site. Specific conductance and pH were determined in the field. The purpose of the conference was to acquaint participants in the NAWDEX program with the systems, data resources, and services available throughout the membership, to establish improved personal relationships within the membership, and to serve as a forum for the exchange of ideas and expertise on matters relating to improving the operation of NAWDEX and identifying the needs of the water-data community. Sixteen papers were presented at the conference which describe data systems of member organizations, needs of the data community, and programs of national interest. These papers are published in their entirety in this proceedings volume. Four working panels were also conducted dealing with (1) Program Administration, Management, and Coordination; (2) Recommended Standards for the Handling and Exchange of Water Data; (3) Water Data Indexing and Technical Systems Development; and (4) Request, Response and Service Activities. The reports and conclusions of these panels are included also. Multiple-regression analyses were used to define the relationship between the flood-discharge frequency of annual peak discharges for streams draining 0.1 to 1,000 square miles and 10 climatological and physical basin characteristics. The analyses indicate that the drainage area of the basin is the most significant characteristic. Five regions having distinct flood-discharge frequency characteristics are delineated. Individual relations of flood magnitude and frequency to drainage area are given for parts of the main stems of the major rivers without significant regulation draining more than 1,000 square miles. Several Paleogene nonmarine arkosic sandstone units fringe and in part occur within the complex crystalline core. The early to middle Eocene Chuckanut Formation is present on the west side of the crystalline core in the western foothills of the Cascades. The early to middle Eocene Swauk Formation partially encircles the Mt. Stuart massif of the central Cascades. In the western foothills of the Cascades, between the main body of Chuckanut Formation near Bellingham and the main outcrop area of the Swauk Formation south of Mt. Stuart, many smaller bodies of arkosic sandstone have variously been referred to either the Swauk or Chuckanut Formations. The early Eocene Manastash Formation occurs locally in an area south of the Yakima River. The middle to late Eocene Chumstick Formation is mostly confined to the Chiwaukum graben within the crystalline core and is separated from the Swauk Formation on the southwest by the Leavenworth Fault. The Oligocene Wenatchee Formation unconformably over lies the Chumstick Formation near Wenatchee. The middle to late Eocene Roslyn Formation crops out north of the Yakima River and is underlain by the Teanaway Basalt which separates the Roslyn from the older Swauk Formation. The middle Eocene to early Oligocene Naches Formation forms a north-trending body that crosses the Yakima River and is in fault contact with both the Swauk and Manastash Formations. The middle to late Eocene Puget Group underlies the Quaternary deposits of the Puget Lowland southeast of Seattle on the western flank of the Cascades.\r\n\r\nThe various formations are all composed predominantly of fine- to medium-grained sandstones with lesser amounts of interbedded shale, conglomerate and coal. Compositionally, the units are predominantly either feldspathic or litho-feldspathic subquartzose sandstones. Volcanic rocks are important constituents of the Puget Group, the \r\nChumstick and Naches Formations, and the isolated arkosic bodies. The three older units, however, contain relatively less volcanic lithics to total lithics than do younger units, indicating perhaps the initiation of more widespread volcanic activity in middle Eocene time. Ratios of framework grain parameters show that the terrestrial sandstone units were derived from a mixed plutonic and tectonic source terrane of continental block tectonic provenance with an overprint of magmatic arc provenance. \r\n\r\nModal analysis was performed on samples from the various sedimentary units to establish petrologic compositions, and to provide data with which to compare the different units and discuss clast provenance and tectonic regimen. Although the arkosic sandstones have generally uniform framework clast compositions, minor yet significant differences do exist between the units. Basal or basement-onlap portions of the units in particular are locally derived and differ markedly from the overall compositions of the individual units. Many coincidences of composition, age, structure, and bedrock indicate that the Chuckanut and Swauk may have originally been deposited as a single unit that since has been offset approximately 160 kilometers by right lateral strike slip motion starting about 48 Ma. An explanation of sampling, preparation, and analytical procedures, and geochemical raw data for all samples are discussed by O'Leary and others (1976). &nbsp;The -80 mesh (177 micrometers) stream-sediment medium was used in this study because, given the rather restrictive time and manpower constraints, this medium combined with panned concentrates was determined to be the most economical and adequate medium in this area of the north-central Brooks Range where clastic sediments are derived from local bedrock.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>The study area is generally one of high relief with short fast moving streams and broad glacial valleys. All samples were taken from active streams, as close to the center channel as possible. All sediments were considered to be locally derived. Care was taken, when sampling an obviously glaciated terrane, to sample above or upstream from morainal material, wherever possible.
