These plans are based on a review of the needs of Federal Government agencies, State and local government agencies, engineers and scientists engaged in consulting and research, professional organizations and societies, model code groups, and others.\r\n\r\nThe Earthquake Hazards Reduction Act provided an unprecedented opportunity for participation in a national program by representatives of State and local governments, business and industry, the design professions, and the research community. The USGS and the NSF (National Science Foundation) have major roles in the national program. The ultimate goal of the program is to reduce losses from earthquakes. Implementation of USGS research in the Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program requires the close coordination of responsibility between Federal, State and local governments.\r\n\r\nThe projected research plan in national seismic hazards and risk for fiscal years 1980-84 will be accomplished by USGS and non-USGS scientists and engineers. The latter group will participate through grants and contracts. The research plan calls for (1) national maps based on existing methods, (2) improved definition of earthquake source zones nationwide, (3) development of improved methodology, (4) regional maps based on the improved methodology, and (5) post-earthquake investigations. Maps and reports designed to meet the needs, priorities, concerns, and recommendations of various user groups will be the products of this research and provide the technical basis for improved implementation.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/cir816","usgsCitation":"Hays, W., 1979, Program and plans of the U.S. Geological Survey for producing information needed in National Seismic hazards and risk assessment, fiscal years 1980-84: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 816, iv, 40 p. :ill., maps ;26 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir816.","productDescription":"iv, 40 p. :ill., maps ;26 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":124559,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1979/0816/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":30891,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1979/0816/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9be4b07f02db65e0e1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hays, Walter W.","contributorId":66669,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hays","given":"Walter W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147673,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Data items included: profiles of temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and specific conductance; physical, biological, nutrient, and organic characteristics; major and minor constituents; and physical and chemical data associated with major inflows.

Light penetration (secchi disk) was greatest (21 feet) in Mogadore Reservoir and least (0.8 foot) in Stonelick Lake. Seasonal thermal gradients developed in most lakes greater than 17 feet in depth.

Dissolved-oxygen saturation ranged from 220 percent in Summit Lake to zero percent in the bottom waters of all lakes having stable thermal gradients. Five-day BOD ranged from 0.3 milligrams per liter im Michael J. Kirwan Reservoir to more than 17 milligrams per liter in Nimisilia Reservoir. Anaerobic zones were frequently characterized by hydrogen sulfide and high concentrations of ammonia.

All lakes had moderately hard to very hard waters. Calcium, bicarbonate, and sulfate were the principal constituents. Specific conductance ranged from 130 micromhos (Lake Logan) to 1250 micromhos (Summit Lake). Because of nutrient uptake and recycling, significant chemical and physical differences developed in different thermal strata. Pesticide residues and trace elements were not above the limits recommended by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.

All counts of fecal colifrom bacteria were within State standards. Blue-green algae (Cyanophyta) dominated the phytoplankton communities of 18 lakes in spring and 26 lakes in summer. Algal counts from euphotic-zone composite samples ranged from 180 cells per milliliter in Killdeer Reservoir to 3,400,000 cells per milliliter in Kiser Lake. Maximum algal counts were greater than 100,000 cells per milliliter in 19 lakes.

Streams ate a major source of macronutrients in Ohio lakes. The estimated discharge-weighted mean concentration for nitrite and total phosphorus in 62 inflow samples was 1.22 milligrams per liter as N and 0.12 milligrams per liter as P.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri78109","usgsCitation":"Tobin, R.L., and Youger, J.D., 1979, Chemical and biological quality of selected lakes in The beds dip to the south at an average rate of about 6 feet per mile. The unconfined aquifers are used mostly for domestic and farm use but also supply water to several municipalities and industries. The average saturated thickness of the aquifers is about 45 feet. This physically limits drawdown space and, although specific capacities are high, yields generally do not exceed a few hundred gallons per minute. Water levels have not declined significantly because withdrawals are small. Water quality is generally good although in some places there are objectionally high concentrations iron and in some the water is acidic.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri78131","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Mississippi Board of Water Commissioners, Jack W. One process cited by many investigators is that uncontrolled dissolving of salt or other soluble evaporites can create or enlarge underground cavities, thereby increasing the span of the unsupported roof to the strength limit of the overlying rocks. Downwarping results when spans are exceeded, or collapse of the undermined roof leads to upward sloping or chimneying of the overburden rocks. If underground space is available for rock debris to collect, the void can migrate to the surface with the end result being surface subsidence or collapse. \r\n\r\nIn North America natural solution subsidence and collapse features in rocks ranging in age from Silurian to the present are found in evaporite terranes in the Great Plains from Saskatchewan in the north to Texas and New Mexico in the south, in the Great Lakes area, and in the southeastern States. Man-induced subsidence and collapse in evaporites are generally associated with conventional or solution mining, oilfield operations, and reservoir and dam construction, and can be especially hazardous in populated or built-up areas.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr791666","usgsCitation":"Ege, J.R., 1979, Surface subsidence and collapse in relation to extraction of salt and other soluble evaporites: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1666, ii, 37 p. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791666.","productDescription":"ii, 37 p. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143397,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1666/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36294,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1666/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afce4b07f02db696812","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ege, John R.","contributorId":69534,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ege","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":158205,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The monitoring systems that have been developed are compatible with standard monitoring systems such as snow, stream, and rain gages; wind, temperature and humidity measuring instruments; tiltmeters and seismic event counters. Supported by appropriate power, radios and antennae, remote stations can be left unattended for at least 1 year and consistently relay local information via polar orbiting or geostationary satellites. These data, in conjunction with timely Landsat images, can provide a basis for more accurate estimates on snowfall, water runoff, reservoir level changes, flooding, drought effects, and vegetation trends and may be of help in forecasting volcanic eruptions. These types of information are critical for resource inventory and development, especially in developing countries where remote regions are commonly difficult to access. \r\n\r\nThis paper introduces the reader to the systems available, describes their features and limitations, and provides suggestions on how to employ them. An extensive bibliography is provided for those who wish more information.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/cir803","usgsCitation":"Carter, W.D., and Paulson, R.W., 1979, Introduction to monitoring dynamic environmental phenomena of the world using satellite data collection systems, 1978: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 803, iii, 21 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir803.","productDescription":"iii, 21 p.","costCenters":[{"id":222,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":125129,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1979/0803/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":31184,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1979/0803/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aafe4b07f02db66cf9c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Carter, William Douglas","contributorId":93892,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Carter","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"Douglas","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":148162,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Paulson, Richard W.","contributorId":106861,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Paulson","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":148161,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Rocks of the Mineral Mountains range from Precambrian to Quaternary in age, but mostly consist of Tertiary granitic rocks. The range lies with the Wah Wah-Tusher mineral belt. Lead, silver, gold, and tungsten have been mined commercially. \r\n\r\nDuring a geochemical survey conducted in the summer of 1978, 30 water samples and 29 stream-sediment samples were collected from the Mineral Mountains area. The interpretation of simple plots of uranium concentrations and the results of a Q-mode factor analysis indicate that potential exists for uranium mineral deposits within the Mineral Mountains. The most favorable areas are in the granitic pluton near its contacts with sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. The most likely source of the uranium anomalies is uraninite-bearing epigenic veins along faults and fractures within the pluton. Three hypothetical models are proposed to account for the uranium mineralization.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr791354","usgsCitation":"Miller, W.R., McHugh, J., and Ficklin, W.H., 1979, Possible uranium mineralization, Mineral Mountains, Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1354, iii, 48 p. :ill., maps ;29 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791354.","productDescription":"iii, 48 p. :ill., maps ;29 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143378,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1354/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38202,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1354/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad5e4b07f02db683b13","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Miller, W. Person, personal communication, 1979) occurred beneath the Chugach and St. Elias mountains of southern Alaska (fig. 1). This is a region of complex tectonics resulting from northwestward convergence between the Pacific and North American plates. To the east, the northwest-trending Fairweather fault accommodates the movement with dextral slip of about 5.5 cm/yr (Plafker, Hudson, and others, 1978); to the west, the Pacific plate underthrusts Alaska at the Aleutian trench, which trends southwestward (Plafker 1969). The USGS has operated a telemetered seismic network in southern Alaska since 1971 and it was greatly expanded along the eastern Gulf of Alaska in September 1974. The current configuration of stations is shown in Figure 9. Technical details of the network are available in published earthquake catalogs (Lahr, Page, and others, 1974; Fogleman, Stephens, and others, 1978). Preliminary analysis of the data from this network covering the time period September 1, 1978 through March 10, 1979, as well as worldwide data for the main shock will be discussed in this paper.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr79670","usgsCitation":"Lahr, J.C., Plafker, G., Stephens, C., Foglean, K.A., and Blackford, M.E., 1979, Interim report on the St. Elias, Alaska earthquake of 28 February 1979: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-670, 23 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr79670.","productDescription":"23 p.","onlineOnly":"Y","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":140230,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr_79_670.gif"},{"id":259117,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0670/of79-670.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":259293,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0670/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":407802,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_75015.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"St. Elias Mountains, Chugach Mountains","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -142,\n 59.75\n ],\n [\n -139.5,\n 59.75\n ],\n [\n -139.5,\n 61\n ],\n [\n -142,\n 61\n ],\n [\n -142,\n 59.75\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49dbe4b07f02db5e0a4d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lahr, John C.","contributorId":20328,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lahr","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154931,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Plafker, George","contributorId":3920,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Plafker","given":"George","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154929,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Stephens, C.D.","contributorId":18752,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stephens","given":"C.D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154930,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Foglean, K. Preliminary reports of a paleomagnetic investigation have been reported by Hillhouse and Gromme (1977), and a more complete analysis of the results is in preparation. The aeromagnetic survey was flown at a nominal height of 300 m above the surface and flight lines were spaced about 1.7 km apart. Total magnetic field was measured by a proton-precession magnetometer. The International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF), updated to 1976, was removed, and the residual values were computer-contoured to produce the aeromagnetic map (sheet 1). Detailed aeromagnetic maps at scale 1:63,360 and a map at scale 1:250,000 have been released as Open File Reports 78-1080 through 1083 (U.S. Geological Survey, 1978).

Magnetic anomalies in the Seward-Blying Sound region are somewhat less complex than in other parts of south-central Alaska, primarily because of the huge volume of relatively nonmagnetic flysch that constitutes the Valdez and Orca Groups. Several rather isolated groups of mafic-ultramafic rocks are significantly more magnetic than the flysch assemblages, and cause distinctive patterns of magnetic anomalies. A few of the granitic plutons are magnetic, but most appear to have little or no magnetic expression.

","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/mf880D","usgsCitation":"Case, J.E., Tysdal, R.G., Hillhouse, J.W., and Grommé, C., 1979, Geologic interpretation of aeromagnetic map of the Seward and Blying Sound quadrangles, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 880, 2 Plates: 33.37 x 38.61 inches and 58.63 x 44.21 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf880D.","productDescription":"2 Plates: 33.37 x 38.61 inches and 58.63 x 44.21 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":417374,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/0880-D/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":417373,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/0880-D/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":183900,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/0880-D/report-thumb.jpg"}],"scale":"250000","country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Blying Sound Quadrangle, Seward Quadrangle","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -150,60 ], [ -150,61 ], [ -147,61 ], [ -147,60 ], [ -150,60 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b16e4b07f02db6a5508","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Case, J. The principal Middle Ordovician formations containing high-purity sands are the St. Peter Sandstone which crops out extensively from Minnesota to Arkansas; the Everton Formation principally of Arkansas; and the Oil Creek, McLish, and Tulip Creek Formations (all of the Simpson Group) of Oklahoma. The St. Peter and sandy beds in the other formations are commonly called \"sandstones,\" but a more appropriate term is \"sands\" for in most fresh exposures they are completely uncemented or very weakly cemented. On exposure to air, uncemented sands usually become \"case hardened\" where evaporating ground water precipitates mineral matter at the surface; but this is a surficial effect. This report summarizes the available information on the extent of exposures, range of grain size, and chemical composition of the Middle Ordovician sands.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/mf1097","isbn":"0607805838","usgsCitation":"Ketner, K.B., 1979, Map showing high-purity silica sand of Middle Ordovician age in the Midwestern states: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1097, Plate: 35.98 x 45.21 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1097.","productDescription":"Plate: 35.98 x 45.21 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":182295,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1097/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":278808,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1097/plate-1.pdf"}],"scale":"1000000","country":"United States","state":"Arkansas;Illinois;Iowa;Minnesota;Missouri;Oklahoma;Wisconsin","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -100.0,33.49 ], [ -100.0,45.92 ], [ -86.8,45.92 ], [ -86.8,33.49 ], [ -100.0,33.49 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b15e4b07f02db6a4ca4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ketner, Keith B.","contributorId":957,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ketner","given":"Keith","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":262804,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
