It will divert floodwater from the Hillsborough River at points upstream from Tampa through a canal system to McKay Bay. The U.S. Geological Survey began a hydrologic data program in 1974 to provide data needed to identify existing hydrologic conditions and to evaluate the effects of canal construction. A network of surface-water and ground-water sites was designed to monitor changes in nutrients, trace metals, major inorganic constituents, pesticides, and benthic invertebrates along the canal system; to monitor changes in trace elements, common constituents, nitrates, specific conductance, and chlorides in the Floridan aquifer; and to monitor changes in the potentiometric surface of the Floridan aquifer.</p><p>In 1974-75, the monitoring program consisted of drilling 12 monitor wells and initiation of the surface-water sampling program. In 1976, the program consisted of drilling five additional wells, continuation of the surface-water sampling, initiation of ground-water sampling program, and monitoring of discharge from springs.</p><p>Water-quality data for nine surface-water sites in the basin were collected at each of the control structure sites, in the tidal portion of the canal, and at each of the major tributaries to the canal system.</p><p>Fifteen ground-water sites were sampled annually to provide information on ground-water quality. Ten wells were sampled semiannually for dissolved chloride concentrations to provide information on the freshwater-saltwater interface. Ground-water levels were collected at 34 wells in the areas adjacent to the canal to monitor changes in the potentiometric surface in the Floridan aquifer.</p><p>Discharge measurements from springs along the canal system were made in 1969-73 and 1976 to provide data on the quantity of ground water entering the canal. State and local officials in the greater Denver area may find these data useful in planning for residential, commercial, and industrial development. A digital model calibrated to conditions in East Fork White River was used to develop alternatives for future waste loadings that would be compatible with Indiana stream water-quality standards defined for two critical hydrologic conditions, summer and winter low flows.</p><p>The model indicates that benthic-oxygen demand and the headwater concentrations of carbonaceous biochemical-oxygen demand, nitrogenous biochemical-oxygen demand, and dissolved oxygen are the most significant factors affecting the dissolved-oxygen concentration of East Fork White River downstream from the Columbus wastewater-treatment facility. The effect of effluent from the facility on the water quality of East Fork White River was minimal.</p><p>The model also indicates that, with a benthic-oxygen demand of approximately 0.65 gram per square meter per day, the stream has no additional waste-load assimilative capacity during summer low flows. The research will concentrate on three areas: (1) Developing methods to analyze flood peaks in foothill areas by using gaging-station records to obtan annual arrays of snowmelt and rainfall peaks; (2) investigating techniques for flood informatin transfer, using physical and climatic characteristics; and (3) testing and, if required, verifying hydrologic models. The available gaging-station data consists of records from 81 active and 43 discontinued gaging stations. The National Weather Service operates 53 recording and 70 non-recording precipitation gages, and has 476 storm observers within the project boundaries. The Soil Conservation Service is installing a network (SNOTEL) of 46 automated snowpack monitors. A data-collection network will be established in areas of data deficiencies, consisting of streamflow stations , crest-stage gages, and precipitation stations. The network comprises 565 sites, 8 of which will require construction of new wells. Frequencies of sampling at the different sites are assigned at quarterly, semiannual, annual, and 5 years. Selected characteristics of the water will be monitored by both laboratory- and field-analysis methods. The network is designed to: (1) Enable water managers to keep abreast of the general quality of the State 's ground water, and (2) serve as a warning system for undesirable changes in ground-water quality. Data were compiled for hydrogeologic conditions, ground-water quality, cultural elements, and pollution sources. A ' hydrologic unit priority index ' is used to rank 84 hydrologic units (river basins or segments of river basins) of the State for monitoring according to pollution potential. Emphasis for selection of monitoring sites is placed on the 15 highest ranked units. The potential for pollution is greatest in areas of privately owned agricultural land. Other areas of pollution potential are residential development, mining and related processes, and hazardous waste disposal. Data are given for laboratory and field analyses, number of site visits, manpower, subsistence, and mileage, from which costs for implementing the network can be estimated. Suggestions are made for data storage and retrieval and for reporting changes in water quality.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological A digital model calibrated to conditions in Silver Creek was used to develop alternatives for future waste loadings that would be compatible with Indiana stream water-quality standards defined for two critical hydrologic conditions, summer and winter low flows. Effluents from the Sellersburg and Clarksville-North wastewater-treatment facilities are the only point-source waste loads that significantly affect the water quality in the modeled segment of Silver Creek.</p><p>Model simulations indicate that nitrification is the most significant factor affecting the dissolved-oxygen concentration in Silver Creek during summer and winter low flows.</p><p>Natural streamflow in Silver Creek during the summer and annual 7-day, 10-year low flow is zero, so no benefit from dilution is provided. A new international program is being formulated to promote cooperative development of the concepts required to solve proliferating problems created by intensifying human use and misuse of the land and its resources. A tentative title suggested by the U.S. Geodynamics Committee for this program for the decade of the 1980's is \"Crustal Dynamics: A Framework for Resources.\" The needs are pressing at both the national and international levels. Many reasons cited for undertaking this international program are akin to the justifications for forming, maintaining, or enlarging governmental geological surveys. Thus, the U.S. Geological Survey has an obligation to participate in the Crustal Dynamics Program to meet its expanding responsibilities to serve the nation effectively.</p><p>A U.S. Geological Survey workshop was convened near Denver on September 20-23, 1978, to consider appropriate roles that might be played in the Crustal Dynamics decade. Some 60 Survey geologists, geophysicists, geochemists, and hydrologists participated. Principal questions addressed were: 1) What are the major earth-science problems that should be investigated during the next decade? 2) What are their implications to society? 3) What competence can be brought to bear on these problems and what further competence and tools need to be developed? 4) What roles are appropriate for the USGS within the broader national and international earth-science communities?</p><p>This report presents some responses to these questions. Readers may recognize some defects. The report was prepared by several committees and its sections remain uneven despite editing. Insufficient time was available for either lengthy consideration or discussions, and no opportunity was provided for communication with colleagues in other organizations. Types of problems for which models have been, or are being developed, include categories such as the following: (1)specialized hydraulics, (2)flow routing in streams, estuaries, lakes, and reservoirs, (3) sedimentation, (4) transport of physical, chemical, and biological constituents, (5) surface exchange of heat and mass, (6) coupled stream-aquifer flow systems, (7) physical hydrology for rainfall-runoff relations, stream-system simulations, channel geometry, and water quality, (8) statistical hydrology for synthetic streamflows, floods, droughts, storage, and water quality, (9) management and operation problems, and (10) miscellaneous hydrologic problems. Following a brief review of activities prior to 1970, the current status of surface-water modeling is given as being in a developmental, verification, operational, or continued improvement phase. Ground-water levels ranged from 0.3 foot above to 0.1 foot below average. The highest and lowest ground-water levels for the year were 1 foot below and 1 foot above their long-term average. In the Hialeah-Miami Springs area , water levels in wells near the centers of the heaviest pumping ranged from 7.2 to 11.9 feet below mean sea level, 1929; and in the Southwest well-field area, ground-water levels near the centers of pumping ranged from 1.0 foot above to 1.5 feet below mean sea level. In 1977 the combined average daily discharge from nine major streams and canals that flow eastward into tidal waters was 1,712 cubic feet per second (cfs), 46 cfs above the combined average daily flow for 1976. The combined average daily flow through the Tamiami Canal outlets was 582 cfs, 201 cfs above that of 1976. The 1977 position of the salt front in the coastal part of the Biscayne aquifer was about the same as in 1976, except south of Homestead Air Force Base where the salt front had encroached farther inland. Part of the concern is related to the possible impacts that mining and processing of lignite will have on water resources. Not only will the disturbance caused by excavating affect the quantity and quality of surface and ground water but, the mining, processing, and conversion processes will require the use and consumption of significant quantities of water.</p><p>In order to assess the magnitude of the effects of strip mining upon both surface and ground water, baseline conditions (hydrologic conditions in the area prior to mining) must be well defined. A thorough data file and literature search was made so that baseline conditions in the area could be defined. In addition, data-collection networks have been established for the collection of quantitative and qualitative information on streamflow and water levels in the aquifers. Data collected to date at these sites are included in the report. Collection of data at these sites will continue through at least September 1979.<br></p><p>Information presented in this report can be used to estimate the quantities of water available for use and During a short visit to the headquarters of the Interstate Commission for the Araguaia-Tocantins Valley and to several stream-gaging stations in June 1964, the author reviewed the status of the streamflow and meteorological data-collection programs in relation to the streamflow and meteorological data-collection programs in relation to the pressing needs of development project studies. To provide data for areal and project-site studies and for main-stream sites, an initial network of 33 stream gaging stations was proposed, including the 7 stations then in operation. Suggestions were made in regard to operations, staffing and equipment. Organizational responsibilities for operations were found to be divided uncertainly. The Brazilian Meteorological Service had 15 synoptic stations in operation in and near the basin, some in need of reconditioning. Plans were at hand for the addition of 15 sites to the synoptic network and for limited data collection at 27 other sites. The author proposed collection of precipitation data at about 50 other locations to achieve a more representative areal distribution. Temperature, evaporation, and upper-air data sites were suggested to enhance the prospective hydrometeorological studies. The test well was drilled to determine the feasibility of disposing of liquid waste from the city's secondary treatment plant. Drilling of the test well began in July 1973 and was completed in November 1974. A conventional circulation mud-rotary drilling method was used to a depth of 1,146 feet below land surface and a reverse circulation air-lift method was used to a depth of 3,513 feet. The greatest chloride concentration of water withdrawn from the test well was 31,000 milligrams per liter. The model, as described, applies specifically to the Skokomish, Nisqually, and Cowlitz Rivers, in Washington State, and more generally to streams in other regions that derive seasonal runoff from melting snow. Thus the techniques demonstrated for these three drainage basins can be used as a guide for applying this method to other streams. Input to the computer program consists of daily averages of gaged runoff of these streams, and daily values of precipitation collected at Longmire, Kid Valley, and Cushman Dam. Predictions are based on estimates of the absolute storage of water, predominately as snow: storage is approximately equal to basin precipitation less observed runoff. A pre-forecast test season is used to revise the storage estimate and improve the prediction accuracy. To obtain maximum prediction accuracy for operational applications with this model , a systematic evaluation of several hydrologic and meteorologic variables is first necessary. Six input options to the computer program that control prediction accuracy are developed and demonstrated. Predictions of streamflow can be made at any time and for any length of season, although accuracy is usually poor for early-season predictions (before December 1) or for short seasons (less than 15 days). The coefficient of prediction (CP), the chief measure of accuracy used in this manual, approaches zero during the late autumn and early winter seasons and reaches a maximum of about 0.85 during the spring snowmelt season. Maps were prepared showing average precipitation, average streamflow, stream temperature, ground- and surface-water quality, sediment yield, and geology. Recommendations were made for additional study and suggested approaches for continued monitoring in the coal areas.<br></p><p>During the 1931-75 water years, the minimum discharges for the five major streams that head in the area ranged from about 12,000 to 26,000 acre-feet per year, and the maximum discharges ranged from about 59,000 to 315,000 acre-feet per year. Correlations indicate that 3 years of low-flow records at stream sites in the Wasatch Plateau would allow the development of relationships with long-term sites that can be used to estimate future low-flow records within a standard error of about 20 percent.<br></p><p>Most water-quality degradation in streams occurs along the flanks of the Wasatch Plateau and Book Cliffs. In the uplands, dissolved-solids concentrations generally ranged from less than 100 to about 250 milligrams per liter, and in the lowlands the concentrations ranged from about 250 to more than 6,000 milligrams per liter.<br></p><p>In the lowland areas, the Ferron Sandstone Member of the Mancos Shale appears to have the most potential for subsurface development of water of suitable chemical quality for human consumption. Three wells in the Ferron yielded water with dissolved-solids concentrations ranging from about 650 to 1,230 milligrams per liter.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The primary purpose of that investigation was to provide the geohydrological understanding needed to predict the impact of potential phosphate industry operations in the forest on the natural hydrologic system. The investigation involved test drilling, implementation of a hydrologic monitoring network, water-quality sampling, comprehensive aquifer tests, and literature study. The numerous data obtained from the field investigations, laboratory analyses, and published and unpublished sources were published in summary form in an interpretive report (Miller and others, 1978, Impact of potential phosphate mining on the hydrology of Osceola National Forest, Florida: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations 78-6, 159 p.). This report is an index to the type, source, location, and availability of the data used in the interpretive investigation. The report indexes the following water-resources data: geological, geophysical, ground water, surface water, quality of water, meteorological, climatological, aquifer tests, maps, photographs, elevations, and reference publications.
