In order to measure the magnitude and rate of this deformation, three networks of precise geodetic control were established in 1977-78, as part of an international agreement between Mexico and the United States. This report gives the background data for one of these survey nets--a local network of precise horizontal control designed to monitor the horizontal component of ground movement in the area of geothermal production. It represents the first year's effort of a 3-year investigation by the U.S. Geological Survey. It is anticipated that the network of horizontal control will become part of the monitoring program of the Mexican Comision Federal de Electricidad (C.F.E.) for periodic surveys.

Fifty-nine lines of precise horizontal control comprising the Cerro Prieto horizontal-control net were established and measured for the first time during January-March 1978. The net encompasses the area of geothermal interest, and spans many of the active local and regional faults. By repeated measurement of the lines in the network, magnitudes and rates of relative ground movement can be calculated. Surveyed control lines of the net tie stations in the geothermal area to bedrock reference stations on Cerro Prieto volcano and four peaks of the Cucapas Mountains. Thus, measured ground movement in the geothermal area can eventually be correlated with regional changes in western Mexicali Valley. To measure accurately the deformation caused by geothermal production and to differentiate this deformation from changes due to other causes are among the challenges of this research program.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr79204","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Department of Energy","usgsCitation":"Lofgren, B.E., and Massey, B.L., 1979, Monitoring crustal strain, Cerro Prieto geothermal field, Baja California, Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-204, Report: i, 33 p.; 2 Plates: 29.36 x 19.66 inches and 21.20 x 19.45 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr79204.","productDescription":"Report: i, 33 p.; 2 Plates: 29.36 x 19.66 inches and 21.20 x 19.45 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":422868,"rank":4,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0204/figure-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":422867,"rank":3,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0204/figure-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":422866,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0204/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":152747,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0204/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Mexico, United States","otherGeospatial":"Baja California","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -119.22846846416604,\n              32.62514651994512\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.22846846416604,\n              22.192219408579774\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.3545906119748,\n              22.192219408579774\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.3545906119748,\n              32.62514651994512\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.22846846416604,\n              32.62514651994512\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b04e4b07f02db69917b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lofgren, Ben Elder","contributorId":52973,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lofgren","given":"Ben","email":"","middleInitial":"Elder","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":181647,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Massey, Bruce L.","contributorId":74001,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Massey","given":"Bruce","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":181648,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

During 1970-75, there was little annual variation in the thickness, dissolved oxygen, and specific conductance of the hypolimnion near Flaming Gorge Dam. Depletion of dissolved oxygen occurred simultaneously in the bottom waters of both tributary arms in the upstream part of the reservoir and was due to reservoir stratification. Anaerobic conditions in the bottom water during summer stratification eventually results in a metalimnetic oxygen minimum in the reservoir.

The depletion of flow in the river below Flaming Gorge Dam due to evaporation and bank storage in the reservoir for the 1963-75 period was 1,320 cubic hectometers, and the increase of dissolved-solids load in the river was 1,947,000 metric tons. The largest annual variations in dissolved-solids concentration in the river was about 600 milligrams per liter before closure of the dam and about 200 milligrams per liter after closure. The discharge weighted-average dissolved-solids concentration for the 5 years prior to closure was 386 milligrams per liter and 512 milligrams per liter after closure. The most significant changes in the individual dissolved-ion loads in the river during 1973-75 were the increase in sulfate (0.46 million metric tons), which was probably derived from the solution of gypsum, and the decrease in bicarbonate (0.39 million metric tons), which can be attributed to chemical precipitation.

The maximum range in temperature in the Green River below the reservoir prior to closure of the dam in 1962 was from 0°C in winter to 21°C in summer. After closure until 1970 the temperature ranged from 2° to 12°C, but since 1970 the range has been from 4° to 9°C.

The maximum range in temperature in the Green River below the reservoir prior to closure of the dam in 1962 was from 0°C in winter to 21°C in summer. After closure until 1970 the temperature ranged from 2° to 12°C, but since 1970 the range has been from 4° to 9°C.During September 1975, a massive algal bloom was observed in the upstream part of the reservoir. The bloom covered approximately 16 kilometers of the lower part of the Blacks Fork arm, 23 kilometers of the lower part of the Green River arm, and 15 kilometers of the main reservoir below the confluence of the two arms. By October 1975 the algal bloom had disappeared. Nutrient loading in the reservoir was not sufficient to maintain a rate of algal production that would be disastrous to the reservoir ecosystem. However, should the nutrient loading increase substantially, the quality of the reservoir water could probably deteriorate rapidly, and its use for recreation and water supply could be severely limited.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/wsp2058","usgsCitation":"Bolke, E., 1979, Dissolved-oxygen depletion and other effects of storing water in Flaming Gorge Reservoir, Wyoming and Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 2058, iv, 41 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp2058.","productDescription":"iv, 41 p.","numberOfPages":"46","costCenters":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":137910,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2058/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":25711,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2058/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah, Wyoming","otherGeospatial":"Flaming Gorge Reservoir","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae9fa","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bolke, E.L.","contributorId":52151,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bolke","given":"E.L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143088,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Total recharge was 530 acre-feet. Recharge was intermittent during the first 2 months, but was virtually continuous during the last 4 months. Buildup of the water level in the recharge well was 17 feet. The rate of buildup indicates that the well could have accepted water by gravity flow at more than 3,000 gallons per minute for at least 1 year. The cause of a continuing slow rise in water levels in the recharge well in contrast to nearly stable water levels in observation wells as close as 10 feet from the recharge well is as yet uncertain. The recharge water and the native ground water appeared to be chemically compatible.

Infiltration rates from 24-foot-diameter surface impoundments ranged from 0.04 to 0.66 feet per day. The higher rates may have resulted in part from leakage down incompletely sealed holes that were drilled to install monitoring equipment.

The investigation, including a report on the entire project, is scheduled for completion by 1980.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr791492","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with Old West Regional Commission, Nebraska Water Resources Center, Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, The University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Nebraska Natural Resources Commission","usgsCitation":"Lichtler, W.F., Stannard, D.I., and Kouma, E., 1979, Artificial-recharge investigation near Aurora, Nebraska: 2-year progress report: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1492, v, 58 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791492.","productDescription":"v, 58 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143903,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1492/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":389433,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1492/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Nebraska","city":"Aurora","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -98.07083129882812,\n              40.8210843390845\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.8936767578125,\n              40.8210843390845\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.8936767578125,\n              40.94671366508002\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.07083129882812,\n              40.94671366508002\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.07083129882812,\n              40.8210843390845\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4abae4b07f02db671e9c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lichtler, William F.","contributorId":17612,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lichtler","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160701,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Stannard, David I. distanna@usgs.gov","contributorId":562,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stannard","given":"David","email":"distanna@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"I.","affiliations":[{"id":438,"text":"National Research Program - Western Branch","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":160700,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Kouma, Edwin","contributorId":54597,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kouma","given":"Edwin","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160702,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The investigations spanned several years when precipitation was below normal in most of southern California.
\n
Surface-water records were collected for a 6-year period at 21 sites, and continuous precipitation records were obtained at four sites. Ground-water levels were tabulated from historical data at selected wells for 1941, 1968, and 1970. Water quality was monitored at several wells in the valley, and sediment data were collected at three surface-water gages. Organic materials associated with ore from the Texas coastal plain, Tertiary basins of Wyoming, Grants mineral belt of New Mexico, and the Uravan mineral belt of Utah and Colorado vary widely in physical appearance and chemical composition. Partial characterization of organic materials is achieved by chemical analyses to determine atomic hydrogen-to-carbon (H/C) ratios and by gas chromatographic analyses to determine the molecular fragments evolved during stepwise pyrolysis. \r\n\r\nFrom the pyrolysis experiments the organic materials can be classified and grouped: (a) lignites from Texas and Wyoming and (b) hydrogen poor materials, from Grants and Uravan mineral belts and Wyoming; (c) naphthalene-containing materials from Grants mineral belt and Wyoming; and (d) complex and aromatic materials from Uravan, Grants and Wyoming. \r\n\r\nThe organic materials analyzed have atomic H/C ratios that range from approximately 0.3 to at least 1.5. The samples with higher H/C ratios yield pyrolysis products that contain as many as 30 carbon atoms per molecule. Samples with low H/C ratios are commonly more uraniferous and yield mostly methane and low-molecular-weight gases during pyrolysis.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr79942","usgsCitation":"Leventhal, J.S., 1979, Uranium and organic matters: use of pyrolysis-gas chromatography, carbon, hydrogen, and uranium contents to characterize the organic matter from sandstone-type deposits: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-942, i, 11 p. :ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr79942.","productDescription":"i, 11 p. :ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143856,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0942/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37860,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0942/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae0e4b07f02db687ed4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Leventhal, Joel S.","contributorId":36529,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Leventhal","given":"Joel","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160688,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The alteration extends over an area of 1.5 km by 4 km. The geothermal system is probably along a north-south range fault between the Precambrian gneiss and the Tertiary gravels. The scalar resistivities also indicate a northwest trend that may be an intersecting fault.
