These major ash-flows illustrate many features of ash-flow geology not generally exposed so completely. The Holy Joe Member, composed of a series of densely welded flows of quartz latite composition that make up a simple cooling unit. is a rare example of a cooling unit that has a vitrophyre at the top as well as at the base. The upper vitrophyre does not represent a cooling break. The Aravaipa Member. a rhyolite, is completely exposed in Aravaipa and other canyons and on Table Mountain. Remarkable exposures along Whitewash Canyon exhibit the complete change from a typical stacked-up interior zonation of an ash flow to a non welded distal margin. Vertical and horizontal changes in welding, crystallization, specific gravity, and lithology are exposed. The ash flow can be divided into six lithologic zones. \r\n\r\nThe Holy Joe and Aravaipa Members of the Galiuro Volcanics are so well exposed and so clearly show characteristic features of ash-flow tuffs that they could be a valuable teaching aid and a source of theses for geology students.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. Its base is marked by a transition from gray marine shale to red sandstone. The Sixtymile was deposited in the deepening trough of the north-trending Chuar syncline during and as a consequence of regional uplift, tilting, and large-scale block faulting. Folding to form the Chuar syncline occurred in response to faulting on the parallel-trending Butte fault, about 1 km to the east. About 3.2 km of structural relief was developed across the Butte fault, principally during deposition of the lower member of the Sixtymile Formation. Landslide debris shed from the upthrown block on the east constitutes a major part of the material in the lower member. Conglomeratic strata of the upper member of the Sixtymile were deposited after the last increment of subsidence on the Chuar syncline, indicating that deposition of the Sixty mile Formation spanned the time of the structural disturbance. The folding and faulting are part of a regional structural episode that here is called the Grand Canyon orogeny, an event that signaled the end of deposition of strata of the Grand Canyon Supergroup and the beginning of a long interval of erosion. \r\n\r\nThe age of the Grand Canyon orogeny is estimated at about 830 m.y., inferred from an evaluation of maximum and minimum reset K-Ar ages reported for the 1,100-m.y.-old Cardenas Lavas of the Unkar Group. In age and structural style, the Grand Canyon orogeny appears generally correlative with the East Kootenay orogeny of British Columbia, which separates the Purcell (Belt) and Windermere Supergroups. By analogy, strata of the Chuar Group below the Sixtymile Formation are correlated with strata of the upper part of the Belt Supergroup, and conglomeratic strata of the Sixtymile deposited after the structural episode are correlated with conglomeratic strata of the Windermere that unconformably overlie the Belt.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. The Silent Canyon volcanic center is a buried cauldron complex of Miocene age (13-15 m.y.). Black Mountain volcanic center is an elliptical-shaped cauldron complex of late Miocene age. \r\n\r\nThe lavas and tuffs of the two centers comprise a subalkaline-peralkaline association. Rock types range from quartz normative subalkaline trachyte and rhyolite to peralkaline comendite. The Gold Flat Member of the Thirsty Canyon Tuff (Black Mountain) is a pantellerite. \r\n\r\nThe major-element geochemistry of the Black Mountain-Silent Canyon volcanic centers differs in the total range and distribution of Si02, contents, the degree of peralkalinity (molecular Na2O+K2O>Al2O3) and in the values of total iron and alumina through the range of rock types. These differences indicate that the suites were unrelated and evolved from differing magma bodies. \r\n\r\nThe Black Mountain volcanic cycle represents a renewed phase of volcanism following cessation of the Timber Mountain-Silent Canyon volcanic cycles. Consequently, there is a small but numerically incalculable probability of recurrence of Black Mountain-type volcanism within the Nevada Test Site region. (See index map.) Most of the study area of 2,350 square miles is underlain by consolidated rocks of Tertiary age – the Wasatch, Green River, and Uinta Formations. The Green River Formation contains thick beds of oil shale, which are of considerable economic importance as a potential source of petroleum products. Cashion (1967, pl. 1) showed detailed structure contours on the top of the thickest of the oil-shale beds – the Mahogany bed. The generalized structure contours shoe=wn on sheet 1 for the tops of the Wasatch and Green River Formations were prepared to serve as a guide to further data acquisition. Structural high or low areas, which could affect the direction of ground-water movement, would be considered in planning future test wells. The generalized map of the Green River formation (sheet 2) could be an indication of changes in aquifer thickness, and this would also serve as a guide for future test drilling.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/i1156","usgsCitation":"Holmes, W.F., 1979, Maps showing generalized structure contours on the tops of the Wasatch and Green River Formations, geologic sections, and contours of thickness of the Green River Formation, southeastern Uinta Basin, Utah and Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey IMAP 1156, 2 Plates: 39.17 x 42.66 and 37.98 x 42.08 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/i1156.","productDescription":"2 Plates: 39.17 x 42.66 and 37.98 x 42.08 inches","costCenters":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":255703,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/1156/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":255705,"rank":300,"type":{"id":8,"text":"Cover"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/1156/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":405261,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_8997.htm"},{"id":255706,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/1156/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":255704,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/1156/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"125000","country":"United States","state":"Colorado, Utah","otherGeospatial":"Uinta Basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -110.083,\n              39.083\n            ],\n            [\n              -108.833,\n              39.083\n            ],\n            [\n              -108.833,\n              40.217\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.083,\n              40.217\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.083,\n              39.083\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a19e4b07f02db605857","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Holmes, Walter F.","contributorId":31737,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Holmes","given":"Walter","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":274185,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The water analyses included the common anions and cations, oxygen-18, deuterium, and several minor elements. Actual temperatures of the sampled thermal waters ranged from 23° to 49°C. Estimated aquifer temperatures, as derived from geochemical thermometers, ranged from 45° to 145°C based on silica concentrations and 45° to 205°C based on sodium-potassium-calcium ratios. Using the cation thermometer, two analyses indicated aquifer temperatures that were lower than the actual measured temperatures. Estimated temperatures using a mixing-model method ranged from 205° to 320°C, the higher temperature being of questionable value. The different methods used to estimate aquifer temperatures showed little correlation. On the basis of isotope data, the warm waters may be of local meteoric origin and have not been heated enough to react significantly with the aquifer rocks, or they originated as precipitation at high altitude and great distance from the area.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr79687","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy","usgsCitation":"Crosthwaite, E., 1979, Chemical analyses of ground water related to geothermal investigations in the Teton River area, eastern Idaho: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-687, i, 14 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr79687.","productDescription":"i, 14 p.","costCenters":[{"id":343,"text":"Idaho Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":403546,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0687/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":141705,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0687/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho","otherGeospatial":"Teton River","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -111.912434,43.755291 ], [ -111.912434,43.962399 ], [ -111.591358,43.962399 ], [ -111.591358,43.755291 ], [ -111.912434,43.755291 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e2e4b07f02db5e4a9c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Crosthwaite, E. Measurements of thermal gradient in the upper few tens of meters generally are sufficient to outline the major anomalies, but it is always desirable to combine these gradients with reliable estimates of thermal conductivity to provide data on the energy flux and to constrain models for the heat sources responsible for the observed, near-surface thermal anomalies. The major problems associated with heat-flow measurements in the geothermal exploration mode are concerned with the economics of casing and/or grouting holes, the repeated site visits necessary to obtain equilibrium temperature values, the possible legal liability associated with the disturbance of underground aquifers, the surface hazards presented by pipes protruding from the ground, and the security problems associated with leaving cased holes open for periods of weeks to months. \r\n\r\nWe have developed a technique which provides reliable 'real-time' determinations of temperature, thermal conductivity, and hence, of heat flow during the drilling operation in unconsolidated sediments. A combined temperature, gradient, and thermal conductivity experiment can be carried out, by driving a thin probe through the bit about 1.5 meters into the formation in the time that would otherwise be required for a coring trip. Two or three such experiments over the depth range of, say, 50 to 150 meters provide a high-quality heat-flow determination at costs comparable to those associated with a standard cased 'gradient hole' to comparable depths. The hole can be backfilled and abandoned upon cessation of drilling, thereby eliminating the need for casing, grouting, or repeated site visits.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr79593","usgsCitation":"Sass, J., Kennelly, J., Wendt, W., Moses, T., and Ziagos, J., 1979, In situ determination of heat flow in unconsolidated sediments: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-593, v, 71 p., 4 sheets :ill., map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr79593.","productDescription":"v, 71 p., 4 sheets :ill., map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":160335,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0593/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":59576,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0593/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49fae4b07f02db5f41ce","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sass, J.H.","contributorId":70749,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sass","given":"J.H.","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":204162,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kennelly, J.P.","contributorId":16051,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kennelly","given":"J.P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":204159,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Wendt, W.E.","contributorId":60248,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wendt","given":"W.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":204161,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Moses, T.H.","contributorId":24344,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moses","given":"T.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":204160,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Ziagos, J.P.","contributorId":77931,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ziagos","given":"J.P.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":204163,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

Other deposits mapped, but virtually nonwater yielding, are the older (dissected) alluvial-fan, pediment, and terrace deposits. Terraces are capped by gravel and form levels at 30-40, 45-100, 120-150, 200-260, and 280-330 feet above the Nowood River. The thickness of the alluvial aquifer indicated from the sparse well-log data and 42 surface resistivity measurements is between 25 and 50 feet along the Nowood River and more than 60 feet along Tensleep and Paint Rock Creeks. The resistivity measurements indicate a buried bedrock ridge below the boulder-fan gravel between Paint Rock and Medicine Lodge Creeks and a buried channel filled by alluvium along Tensleep Creek. Well yields from the alluvial aquifer are estimated to be low. The most favorable areas for ground-water development are from the flood-plain alluvium along Tensleep Creek and from the boulder-fan gravel and adjoining flood-plain alluvium along Paint Rock and Medicine Creeks. Along the Nowood River the flood-plain alluvium, although its yields are small, has the best potential for ground-water development.
