Regression equations for each station were derived by using data for an identical 5-year period; the remaining record served as independent test data for checking the adequacy of the functions on the basis of continued specific-conductance determinations as an index variable. </p><p>Daily solute concentrations and loads at a sampling site were simulated, and monthly and annual averages were computed by using daily records of specific conductance in conjunction with the regression equations. Simulated annual mean concentrations of most individual solutes and dissolved solids averaged within 10-20 percent of comparable concentrations determined from the composited chemical analyses, although systematic biases were detected in results for some of the relationships used in the simulation. Results of the evaluation of the 12 stations indicated that regression equations, using specific conductance as the independent variable, can be used as an alternative to composite analyses for calculation of solute concentrations and loads in Texas streams and is a flexible system that can be applied with sufficient accuracy to satisfy most anticipated needs for data. From Morris Run to Crooked Creek, a reach of 19 miles, the river bed is influenced by a smothering blanket of heavy metal precipitates and highly acidic water. Biologically, this reach of the river is devoid of fishlife and nearly devoid of benthic macroinvertebrates. Downstream from Crooked Creek the water quality and biota are slowly restored. About 7,500 acres of unlined channels and 2,590 acres in 60 off-channel recharge facilities are available for water spreading.</p><p>To estimate potential infiltration rates for the recharge facilities, 63 single-ring infiltrometer tests were conducted at 22 recharge facilities. Tests ranged from 1 to 14 hours and averaged about 14 hours. Measured infiltration rates ranged from about 0.1 foot per day at Patton basin to 106 feet per day at Lynwood basin. Grain-size distribution was determined on 25 soil samples collected at infiltrometer test sites. Regression analysis showed a direct relation between the logarithm of the infiltration rate and the logarithm of the 20th percentile particle diameter, corresponding to 20 percent finer on the grain-size graph. Regression analysis also showed an inverse relation between the logarithm of the infiltration rate and the logarithm of the sorting coefficient. Test sites were grouped into two geologic units--younger alluvium and older alluvium. Logarithmic plots of infiltration rates versus the ratio D20/30 yielded straight-line plots for both geologic units.</p><p>Silt clogging greatly affects infiltration rates. Some clogging was observed in nearly all facilities, and significant reduction of infiltration rates was measured in seven basins.</p><p>Drillers' logs, supplemented with data from 11 test holes augered during the investigation, were used to delineate low permeability horizons that might retard downward movement of recharged water. Low permeability zones were found within the upper 50 feet at five basins.</p><p>Unused storage capacity in underlying ground-water basins ranges from large in Chino basin to minimal in Oak Glen subbasin. Recharge operations in Bunker Hill, Lytle, Etiwanda, and Claremont Heights basins should be carefully monitored to guard against overfilling the aquifers.</p><p>Recharge capacity, which is the volume rate (cubic feet per second) of water that can be recharged for extended periods at a given site, was estimated for all unlined channels and off-channel recharge facilities. Recharge capacity of all off-channel facilities was estimated to be more than 3,200 cfs (cubic feet per second). Total recharge capacity for major stream systems seems to be adequate to handle floods of 5-year recurrence intervals, and most systems have sufficient capacity to handle 10-year floods.</p><p>Potential recharge rate, which is the infiltration rate (feet per day) that can be maintained over extended periods under normal operating conditions, was delineated throughout the study area on the basis of controlling geologic and hydrologic factors. The major events of each cycle were eruption of a voluminous ash-flow sheet and formation of a large collapse caldera. Lesser events of each cycle were eruption of precaldera and postcaldera rhyolitic lava flows and marginal basaltic lavas. The three major ash-flow sheets are named and designated in this report as formations within the Yellowstone Group. The lavas are assigned to newly named formations organized around the three ash-flow sheets of the Yellowstone Group to represent the volcanic cycles.\r\n\r\nRocks of the first volcanic cycle comprise the precaldera Junction Butte Basalt and rhyolite of Broad Creek; the Huckleberry Ridge Tuff of the Yellowstone Group; and the postcaldera Lewis Canyon Rhyolite and basalt of The Narrows.\r\n\r\nRocks of the second volcanic cycle do not crop out within Yellowstone National Park, and only the major unit, the Mesa Falls Tuff of the Yellowstone Group, is named here.\r\n\r\nThe third volcanic cycle is represented by the precaldera Mount Jackson Rhyolite and Undine Falls Basalt; the Lava Creek Tuff of the Yellowstone Group; and the postcaldera Plateau Rhyolite and five post-Lava Creek basaltic sequences. Collapse to form the compound and resurgent Yellowstone caldera was related to eruption of the Lava Creek Tuff. The Plateau Rhyolite is divided into six members - the Mallard Lake, Upper Basin, Obsidian Creek, Central Plateau, Shoshone Lake Tuff, and Roaring Mountain Members; all but the Mallard Lake postdate resurgent doming of the caldera. The basalts are divided into the Swan Lake Flat Basalt, Falls River Basalt, basalt of Mariposa Lake, Madison River Basalt, and Osprey Basalt.\r\n\r\nSediments are intercalated in the volcanic section below the Huckleberry Ridge and Mesa Falls Tuffs and within the Junction Butte Basalt, sediments and basalts of The Narrows, Undine Falls Basalt, Plateau Rhyolite, and Osprey This supplementary list, for 1968-1971, includes geologic and earth-science reports of investigations in 33 countries, as well as several having regional significance. Only reports written solely by U. S. Geological Survey personnel or in collaboration with their local counterparts are included.</p><p>The reports are listed alphabetically by author for each country or region. Most of the area is underlain by Upper Jurassic to Cretaceous limeston and siltstone, early Tertiary sedimentary rock, and remnants of younger volcanic rocks and lacustrine deposits. The northeastern part of the area, however, is formed of serpentinite, of possible Cretaceous age, unconformably overlain by Upper Cretaceous conglomerate and siltstone that crop out extensively east of the area.\r\n\r\nThe regional structure changes direction in the area. Folds and faults change across a northerly striking hinge line from northeast trends on the west to northwest trends on the east. A north-trending regional fault zone is a little east of the hinge line. The northern part of this fault zone and a northwest-striking fault, a possible thrust, east of it form the boundary between the two stratigraphic provinces. The area northeast of this boundary is cut by a series of vertical northwest-trending faults that are downdropped on the southwest. A large northeast-trending fault that is part of a broad fault zone that extends from the Mediterranean Sea northeastward to Divrigi is in the northwest corner of the area. Some thrust faults cut the Cretaceous rocks in the western part of the area; the Upper Jurassic limestone may be allochthonous.\r\n\r\nThe only economic deposit known in the area is at the Otlukilise Iron Mine where iron is present in a sedimentary filling of sinkholesand as secondary replacement deposits in limestone at their borders.
