The estimates, compiled by specialists of the U.S. Geological Survey, are generally made on geologic projections of favorable rocks and on anticipated frequency of the energy resource in the favorable rocks. Accuracy of the estimates probably ranges from 20 to 50 percent for identified-recoverable resources to about an order of magnitude for undiscovered-submarginal resources. \r\n\r\nThe total coal resource base in the United States is estimated to be about 3,200 billion tons, of which 200-390 billion tons can be considered in the category identified and recoverable. More than 70 percent of current production comes from the Appalachian basin where the resource base, better known than for the United States as a whole, is about 330 billion tons, of which 22 billion tons is identified and recoverable. Coals containing less than 1 percent sulfur are the premium coals. These are abundant in the western coal fields, but in the Appalachian basin the resource base for low-sulfur coal is estimated to be only a little more than 100 billion tons, of which 12 billion tons is identified and recoverable. \r\n\r\nOf the many estimates of petroleum liquids and natural-gas resources, those of the U.S. Geological Survey are the largest because, in general, our estimates include the largest proportion of favorable ground for exploration. We estimate the total resource base for petroleum liquids to be about 2,900 billion barrels, of which 52 billion barrels is identified and recoverable. Of the total resource base, some 600 billion barrels is in Alaska or offshore from Alaska, 1,500 billion barrels is offshore from the United States, and 1,300 billion barrels is onshore in the conterminous United States. Identified-recoverable resources of petroleum liquids corresponding to these geographic units are 11, 6, and 36 billion barrels, respectively. \r\n\r\nThe total natural-gas resource of the United States is estimated to be about 6,600 trillion cubic feet, of which 290 trillion cubic feet is identified and recoverable. In geographic units comparable to those for petroleum liquids, the resource bases are 1,400, 3,400, and 2,900 trillion cubic feet, and the identified-recoverable resources are 31, 40, and 220 trillion cubic feet, respectively. \r\n\r\nUranium resources in conventional deposits, where uranium is the major product, are estimated at 1,600,000 tons of U3O8, of which 250,000 tons is identified and recoverable. A potential byproduct resource of more than 7 million tons of U3O8, is estimated for phosphate rock, but none of this resource is recoverable under present economic conditions. \r\n\r\nThe resources of heat in potential geothermal energy sources are poorly known. The total resource base for the United States is certainly greater than 10 22 calories, of which only 2.5 ? 10 18 calories can be considered identified and recoverable at present. \r\n\r\nOil shale is estimated to contain 26 trillion barrels of oil. None of this resource is economic at present, but if prices increase moderately, 160-600 billion barrels of this oil could be shifted into the identified-recoverable category.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/cir650","usgsCitation":"Theobald, P., Schweinfurth, S.P., and Duncan, D.C., 1972, Energy resources of the United States: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 650, iii, 27 p. :illus. ;26 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir650.","productDescription":"iii, 27 p. :illus. ;26 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":30382,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1972/0650/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":124683,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1972/0650/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a13e4b07f02db6022a2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Theobald, P. It is a compilation of notes from work in progress, and supersedes an earlier report prepared by the Apollo Lunar Geology Investigation Team.

The information in this report was obtained from the Air-to-Ground transcript from the astronaut crew, from lunar surface television, from 60 mm Hasselblad camera photographs, and from available LRL \"mugshot\" photographs of the samples. The sample descriptions are based on these sources of data, and do not reflect the more detailed examination that is presently underway in the LRL.

The report is still a preliminary study due to the short time available to review the rather copious data. The rocks have yet to be examined under collimated light and checked against the lunar surface photographs to make identification certain in all cases. The original orientation of the samples will, in time, as ascertained and photographically documented, and will be the subject of a final report on sample documentation.

The reader will find inconsistencies in the format throughout the report (and probably some errors). The major events of each cycle were eruption of a voluminous ash-flow sheet and formation of a large collapse caldera. Lesser events of each cycle were eruption of precaldera and postcaldera rhyolitic lava flows and marginal basaltic lavas. The three major ash-flow sheets are named and designated in this report as formations within the Yellowstone Group. The lavas are assigned to newly named formations organized around the three ash-flow sheets of the Yellowstone Group to represent the volcanic cycles.\r\n\r\nRocks of the first volcanic cycle comprise the precaldera Junction Butte Basalt and rhyolite of Broad Creek; the Huckleberry Ridge Tuff of the Yellowstone Group; and the postcaldera Lewis Canyon Rhyolite and basalt of The Narrows.\r\n\r\nRocks of the second volcanic cycle do not crop out within Yellowstone National Park, and only the major unit, the Mesa Falls Tuff of the Yellowstone Group, is named here.\r\n\r\nThe third volcanic cycle is represented by the precaldera Mount Jackson Rhyolite and Undine Falls Basalt; the Lava Creek Tuff of the Yellowstone Group; and the postcaldera Plateau Rhyolite and five post-Lava Creek basaltic sequences. Collapse to form the compound and resurgent Yellowstone caldera was related to eruption of the Lava Creek Tuff. The Plateau Rhyolite is divided into six members - the Mallard Lake, Upper Basin, Obsidian Creek, Central Plateau, Shoshone Lake Tuff, and Roaring Mountain Members; all but the Mallard Lake postdate resurgent doming of the caldera. The basalts are divided into the Swan Lake Flat Basalt, Falls River Basalt, basalt of Mariposa Lake, Madison River Basalt, and Osprey Basalt.\r\n\r\nSediments are intercalated in the volcanic section below the Huckleberry Ridge and Mesa Falls Tuffs and within the Junction Butte Basalt, sediments and basalts of The Narrows, Undine Falls Basalt, Plateau Rhyolite, and Osprey Basalt.","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"Geology of Yellowstone National Park (Professional Paper 729)","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Most of the area is underlain by Upper Jurassic to Cretaceous limeston and siltstone, early Tertiary sedimentary rock, and remnants of younger volcanic rocks and lacustrine deposits. The northeastern part of the area, however, is formed of serpentinite, of possible Cretaceous age, unconformably overlain by Upper Cretaceous conglomerate and siltstone that crop out extensively east of the area.\r\n\r\nThe regional structure changes direction in the area. Folds and faults change across a northerly striking hinge line from northeast trends on the west to northwest trends on the east. A north-trending regional fault zone is a little east of the hinge line. The northern part of this fault zone and a northwest-striking fault, a possible thrust, east of it form the boundary between the two stratigraphic provinces. The area northeast of this boundary is cut by a series of vertical northwest-trending faults that are downdropped on the southwest. A large northeast-trending fault that is part of a broad fault zone that extends from the Mediterranean Sea northeastward to Divrigi is in the northwest corner of the area. Some thrust faults cut the Cretaceous rocks in the western part of the area; the Upper Jurassic limestone may be allochthonous.\r\n\r\nThe only economic deposit known in the area is at the Otlukilise Iron Mine where iron is present in a sedimentary filling of sinkholesand as secondary replacement deposits in limestone at their borders. Minor deposits of chrome, copper, and coal also occur in the area.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr7225","usgsCitation":"Barosh, P.J., Sermin, S., Gencel, I., Sengun, M., and Ekren, F., 1972, Geology of the Konakpinar--Sarica area, Sivas Province, Turkey: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 72-25, iii, 58 leaves :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7225.","productDescription":"iii, 58 leaves :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":150938,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1972/0025/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":46319,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1972/0025/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":46320,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1972/0025/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":46321,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1972/0025/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":46322,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1972/0025/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4abde4b07f02db6742fe","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Barosh, Patrick James","contributorId":42184,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Barosh","given":"Patrick","email":"","middleInitial":"James","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":175270,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Sermin, Salim","contributorId":82722,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sermin","given":"Salim","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":175273,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Gencel, Ilker","contributorId":69174,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gencel","given":"Ilker","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":175272,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Sengun, Metin","contributorId":50915,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sengun","given":"Metin","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":175271,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Ekren, Frank","contributorId":99166,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ekren","given":"Frank","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":175274,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}
