This effect is believed to be due to the increased radiation in the ore coupled with the faster rate of fading of low-temperature thermoluminescence compared to high-temperature thermoluminescence. Both the ratios of thermoluminescent responses from any of a variety of temperature ranges and glow curves (plots of intensity of thermoluminescence versus temperature) can be used to detect the increased importance of high-temperature thermoluminescence relative to low-temperature thermoluminescence of previously mineralized samples. Both ratios and glow curves present a systematic pattern around this deposit; these patterns may have application in uranium prospecting.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr79774","usgsCitation":"Spirakis, C.S., 1979, Interpretation of thermoluminescence patterns around a Wyoming roll-type uranium deposit: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-774, ii, 22 p. :graphs ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr79774.","productDescription":"ii, 22 p. :graphs ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143267,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0774/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39088,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0774/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49dae4b07f02db5e00df","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Spirakis, Charles S.","contributorId":97111,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Spirakis","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162869,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Phytoplankton concentrations in cells per milliliter (cells/mL) were generally higher downstream from Atlanta than upstream. The highest concentrations, mostly blue-green algae, occurred in West Point Lake with an average of 90,000 cells/mL for the sampling period. The lowest concentrations, 1,000 cells/mL, occurred upstream of Lake Sidney Lanier. Dissolved orthophosphate and nitrite plus nitrate concentrations were highest in the river reaches and upper reaches of the two lakes and were lowest at the dam pools of both lakes. The high nitrite plus nitrate concentrations downstream from Atlanta were primarily a result of nitrification by Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter bacteria. Algal growth potential was highest downstream from Atlanta, 25 milligrams per liter (mg/L) at Whitesburg, and was the lowest in the headwaters and at the dam pools of Lake Sidney Lanier and West Point Lake. The rate of nitrification in the Atlanta to Franklin reach of the river was comparatively low, 0.02 mg/L per hour. Nitrification was an important cause of dissolved-oxygen consumption in a 45-mi reach of the river downstream from the Atlanta wastewater treatment facilities. Dissolved-oxygen consumption as a result of nitrification may be greatest during low flow. Three types of fluid inclusions were found, brine, compressed gas, and oil (in decreasing volume percent abundance). The total amount of such fluids is small, certainly < 0.1 vol. % and probably in the range 0.01 to 0.001 volume %, but the inclusions are highly erratic in distribution. Unlike many bedded salt deposits, the brine inclusions in this salt contain fluids that are not far from simple NaCl-H2O solutions, with very little of other ions. One of three possible explanations for such fluids is that fresh water penetrated the salt at some unknown time in the past and was trapped; if such entry of fresh water has occurred in the past, it might also occur again in the future.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr791675","usgsCitation":"Roedder, E., and Belkin, H., 1979, Fluid inclusions in salt from the Rayburn and Vacherie domes, Louisiana: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1675, 26 p. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791675.","productDescription":"26 p. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143042,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1675/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38672,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1675/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49d6e4b07f02db5de6f2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Roedder, Edwin","contributorId":25571,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Roedder","given":"Edwin","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162166,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Belkin, H. The quadrangle is dominantly a complex terrane of greenschist- to amphibolitefacies metamorphic rocks that have been intruded by Mesozoic and Tertiary dioritic to granitic rocks and are overlain by Tertiary sedimentary and volcanic rocks. Serpentinized peridotite and associated greenstone, graywacke, and chert crop out in some places. \r\n\r\nThe quadrangle is bisected by the northeastward-trending Shaw Creek fault, which, on the basis of aeromagnetic interpretation and geologic data, is postulated to have left-lateral offset of as much as 48 km. On the northwest side of the Shaw Creek fault, metamorphic rock units have a northwesterly regional trend, and the oldest rocks could be Precambrian in age. Gneiss and schist in the southwestern part of the quadrangle are derived from both igneous and sedimentary protoliths, some of which may be as old as Precambrian. Other rock units, which include calcareous schist and thin-layered marble, black quartzite, semischist, and cataclastic rocks, are considered to be of probable Paleozoic age, although no fossils have yet been found in these rocks. Radiolarians and conodonts in chert associated with greenstone and ultramafic rocks indicate that the chert is of Permian age. \r\n\r\nPotassium-argon ages on igneous rocks of the Big Delta quadrangle fall into two groups: those with biotite, muscovite, hornblende, and sanidine ages between 50 to 69 m.y.; and those with biotite, hornblende, and sanidine ages between 88 to 105 m.y. The younger of these two groups appears to indicate the time of a plutonic event marked by intrusion of mostly small, isolated plutons, including hypabyssal stocks, and the eruption of silicic volcanic rocks. Most of the plutons are quartz monzonite to granite. \r\n\r\nThe older group of ages (88 to 105 m.y.) on igneous rocks includes ages on the largest plutons of the Yukono-Tanana Upland. The rocks range from diorite to quartz monzonite in composition. The potassium-argon ages on the metamorphic rocks of the Big Delta quadrangle, like those obtained elsewhere in the Yukon-Tanana Upland, appear to have been partly or completely reset by subsequent thermal events. \r\n\r\nVein and placer gold deposits have been mined in the Big Delta quadrangle, and although indications of mineralization are widespread, no other mineral deposits have yet been identified. The geologic, geochemical, and geophysical data are compatible with several types of deposits, including porphyry copper, massive sulfide, and skarn deposits. In certain aspects, the geology of the quadrangle is similar to areas in the eastern part of the Yukon-Tanana Upland and Canada where mineral deposits are known.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/cir783","usgsCitation":"Foster, H.L., Albert, N.R., Griscom, A., Hessin, T., Menzie, W., Turner, D.L., and Wilson, F.H., 1979, The Alaskan Mineral Resource Assessment Program: Background information to accompany folio of geologic and mineral resource maps of the Big Delta quadrangle, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 783, iii, 19 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir783.","productDescription":"iii, 19 p.","costCenters":[{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":31342,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1979/0783/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":139243,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1979/0783/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":391117,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_23992.htm"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Big Delta quadrangle","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -147,\n 64\n ],\n [\n -144,\n 64\n ],\n [\n -144,\n 65\n ],\n [\n -147,\n 65\n ],\n [\n -147,\n 64\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b06e4b07f02db69a276","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Foster, Helen Laura","contributorId":21936,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Foster","given":"Helen","email":"","middleInitial":"Laura","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":148472,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Albert, N. Inhabitants of the oases have been aware of the troublesome property for many decades and early investigators mention it in their reports concerning the area. Introduction of modern well-drilling techniques and replacements of native wood casing with steel during the 20th century increased corrosion problems and, in what is called the New Valley Project, led to an intense search for causes and corrective treatments. This revealed that extreme corrosiveness results from combined effects of relatively acidic waters with significant concentrations of destructive sulfide ion; unfavorable ratios of sulfate and chloride to less aggressive ions; mineral equilibria and electrode potential which hinder formation of protective films; relative high chemical reaction rates because of abnormal temperatures, and high surface velocities related to well design. \r\n\r\nThere is general agreement among investigators that conventional corrosion control methods such as coating metal surfaces, chemical treatment of the water, and electrolytic protection with impressed current and sacrificial electrodes are ineffective or impracticable for wells in the Western Desert's New Valley. Thus, control must be sought through the use of materials more resistant to corrosion than plain carbon steel wherever well screens and casings are necessary. Of the alternatives considered, stainless steel appears to. be the most promising where high strength and long-term services are required and the alloy's relatively high cost is acceptable. Epoxy resin-bonded fiberglass and wood appear to be practicable, relatively inexpensive alternatives for installations which do. not exceed their strength limitations. Other materials such as high strength aluminum and Monel Metal have shown sufficient promise to. merit their consideration in particular locations and uses. The limited experience with pumping in these desert wells leaves uncertainties concerning the durability of conventional pump designs. \r\n\r\nEgypt's New Valley Project provides an excellent opportunity for continuing study of the corrosion problems that concern ground-water developers in many parts of the world.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. The potentiometric surface of the shallow aquifer is about 45 feet higher than the potentiometric surface of the Floridan aquifer; hence water flows by gravity from the shallow aquifer to the Floridan aquifer through the well ' connecting ' the two aquifers. Continuous flow measurement over 10 months shows the well discharge varies seasonally and averages slightly more than 50 gallons per minute. Observation wells show that, except for seasonal variation water levels within the area of influence have reached steady state within measurable limits. Vertical anisotrophy in the shallow aquifer is apparently caused by the shape and (or) arrangement of the sand grains that comprise the shallow aquifer , rather than distinct confining layers of different lithology. Transmissivity of the shallow aquifer at the site is about 600 square feet per day. Extensive dewatering of wetlands in east Orange County by connector wells alone is probably not feasible. Nevertheless, large amounts of water could be channeled to the Floridan aquifer by connector wells. The results of the connector well experiment imply that water is being captured from evapotranspiration and runoff in the vicinity of the connector well. Rocks of the study area are greenschist-facies metasandstone, meta-arkose, metagraywacke, and dark slate of the Ocoee Supergroup of late Precambrian age. A major thrust fault, correlated with the Greenbrier Fault, separates fine-grained slaty rocks of the Snowbird Group on the northwest side, from coarse clastic sediments and interbedded slates of the Great Smoky Group on the southeast. North- and northeast-trending folds are common in the map area. Minor deposits of Quaternary sand and gravel occur locally in the lower parts of large streams.

Semiquantitative spectrographic, atomic absorption, and selected fire assay analyses were done on more than 200 samples of rock, soil, and stream sediment. No significant metal anomalies were found for 31 major, minor, and trace elements. In many places, metasiltstone and metasandstone contain trace amounts of chalcopyrite and sphalerite as microscopic intergrowths with the chief sulfide minerals, pyrite and pyrrhotite. Sulfides make up as much as 5 to 10 percent of some rocks and provide concentrations of Cu, Zn, and As slightly higher than background in samples of rock and soil. Rocks containing these disseminated base-metal sulfides are of insufficient grade to have current economic potential, however.

No metallic mineral resources are known within the proposed Big Frog Wilderness. Nonmetallic resources, including slate and phyllite, stone, and sand and gravel are present locally, but are not presently a value because similar resources exist closer to markets outside the study area. These deposits therefore would have only marginal use in the region.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr791209","usgsCitation":"Slack, J.F., Gazdik, G.C., and Dunn, M., 1979, Mineral resources of the Big Frog Wilderness Study Area, Polk County, Tennessee and Fannin County, Georgia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1209, iv, 39 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791209.","productDescription":"iv, 39 p.","costCenters":[{"id":245,"text":"Eastern Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":144688,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1209/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":422792,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1209/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Georgia, Tennessee","county":"Fannin County, Polk County","otherGeospatial":"Big Frog Wilderness Study Area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -84.5580,\n              34.9830\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.4850,\n              34.9830\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.4850,\n              35.058104573869024\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.5580,\n              35.058104573869024\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.5580,\n              34.9830\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b08e4b07f02db69b2f5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Slack, John F. 0000-0001-6600-3130 jfslack@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6600-3130","contributorId":1032,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Slack","given":"John","email":"jfslack@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[{"id":243,"text":"Eastern Geology and Paleoclimate Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":387,"text":"Mineral Resources Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":245,"text":"Eastern Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":162697,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Gazdik, Gertrude C.","contributorId":56220,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gazdik","given":"Gertrude","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162699,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Dunn, Maynard L.","contributorId":40225,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dunn","given":"Maynard L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162698,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Mex.

Cochiti Dam began impounding water in November 1973. Because the dam will trap virtually all of the sediment load originating upstream and water discharge will be controlled, it is expected that equilibrium values of channel width, depth, slope and sediment-transport capability in the existing main stem of the Rio Grande will change.
