The margin of the watershed, particularly the southwestern and northwestern parts, is higher and has local relief often exceeding 150 feet. The higher areas contain numerous lakes and, in the extreme north and east parts of the watershed, are heavily forested.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Mex. ; (2) determine whether mining of the peat will affect the stability of three manmade features near the deposits; (3) determine whether peat mining will affect springs. \r\n\r\nPeat deposits with organic-matter contents between 15 and 35 percent are generally 1- to 2-feet thick and occur within 8 feet of land surface. The deposits underlie an area of about 26 acres. These sediments grade valleyward from coarse colluvial deposits along the edges of the valley to fine-grained deposits and then to coarse channel deposits of the ancestral Bitterroot River near the center of the valley. Beneath the flood plain and low terraces of the present Bitterroot River, about 40 feet of Quaternary alluvium overlies the Tertiary sediments. \n\nEach spring and summer, at rates greatly exceeding discharge, water infiltrates to the ground-water reservoir in the Tertiary and Quaternary rocks. During the fall and winter, water is released from storage. Net recharge in the spring of 1958 and 1959 was about 90,000 and 82,000 acre-feet, relatively. Net discharge during the rest of each year was about 90,000 and 76,000 acre-feet, respectively. \n\nSome surface water available for recharge during high runoff each rejected. During the 1958 and 1959 water years, total surface-water inflow about 1.7 million and 2.0 million acre-feet, respectively. Consumptive use during these water years was about 450,000 and' 400,000 acre-feet, respectively. Move pumping from the ground-water reservoir would provide additional storage space for peak runoff and would increase the potential consumptive use in the valley. \n\nAdditional wells, capable of yielding more than 250 gpm (gallons per minute), can be constructed on the flood plain of the Bitterroot River and on some of the adjacent low terraces, especially those east of the river. Near Corvallis, on a low terrace, wells capable of yielding 1,000 gpm or more can be constructed. Wells capable of yielding 50 to 250 gpm can be constructed on many of the alluvial fans of the tributary streams. In the remaining area, wells will generally yield only enough water for domestic and stock use. \n\nFrom the hydrologic standpoint, the best use of ground water for irrigation is conjunctive use with surface water. Surface water is adequate early in the season and can be distributed throughout the area. As shortages occur, ground water can be used in areas where it is available in sufficient quantity, allowing the surface water to be used in areas of shortage where ground water is not available.\n\nWater in the Bitterroot Valley is of satisfactory chemical quality for domestic, stock, municipal, and most industrial uses. Surface water is softer, as a rule, and contains less dissolved solids than the ground water. Streams heading in the Sapphire Mountains are more mineralized than those heading in the Bitterroot Mountains. Frames were individually scaled for a best fit to the Transverse Mercator projection. Computer processing was performed by the Image Processing Laboratory (IPL) of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), California Institute of Technology. Processing included contrast enhancement and high-pass filtering which accentuates topographic features while subduing albedo variations. Data on the quality of surface water (chemical, microbiological, temperature, and sediment) were collected from designated sampling sites at predetermined intervals such as once daily, weekly, monthly, or less frequently. Records are given for 66 sampling stations of which 9 are partial-record stations, and 52 are miscellaneous sites. Records of chemical analyses are given for 46 ground-water sites. Locations of surface water-quality stations are shown in Figure 1, page 2. Records for pertinent water-quality stations in bordering States are also included. The records were collected by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey under the direction of C. W. Lane, district chief. These data represent that portion of the National Water Data System collected by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in Kansas.</p><p>The Geological Survey has published records of chemical quality, suspended sediment, and water temperatures since 1941 in annual series of water-supply papers entitled, \"Quality of Surface Waters of the United States.\" Beginning with the 1964 water year, water-quality records also have been released by the Geological Survey in annual reports on a State-boundary basis. Distribution of these reports is limited; they are designed primarily for rapid release of data shortly after the end of the water year to meet local needs. The well provides information on aquifer characteristics in this area which are not available from existing deep irrigation wells. The well was drilled by air-rotary methods and penetrates eight aquifer zones (A through H); the upper 75 feet of the well is cased, and the remainder of the hole is open in basalt.</p><p>Test pumping during drilling showed that the well had specific capacities of (1) 4-8 gpm (gallons per minute) per foot of drawdown when at the 255-foot depth and open to aquifers A through D, (2) 5.6 gpm per foot of drawdown when at the 640-foot depth and open to aquifers A through G, and (3) 76 5 gpm per foot of drawdown when at the full 750-foot&nbsp;depth and open to all eight aquifers. The tests indicate that most of the water available to the well is from the deepest aquifer (zone H).&nbsp;</p><p>Borehole geophysical logging supplemented the drillers log of the well and provided information on natural gamma radiation, water temperature and resistivity, and borehole diameter. In the completed well each aquifer zone is isolated by cement seals, and piezometer pipes installed to zones B through H allow a basis for defining the vertical hydraulic gradient and ground-water movement in the area. The pipes also permit chemical quality monitoring of water in the various aquifer zones. An additional pipe, installed for providing thermistor access, allows recording of the geothermal gradient in the well which provides a basis for estimating vertical ground-water movement in the area.
