The bedrock was mapped and samples collected during the summers of 1969, 1970, and 1971 as part of a continuing U.S. Geological Survey project to map basement rocks in the western Chugach Mountains.
\nMost of the early work on the bedrock geology of the Anchorage A-6 quadrangle was done by Capps (1916 and 1940), who studied the geology of the Turnagain-Knik region, and by Park (1933), who studied the Girdwood gold mining district, most of which is in the Anchorage A-6 quadrangle. Recent studies of bedrock in the quadrangle and nearby areas are described in papers by Clark and Bartsch (1971a, b) and Clark (in press, a, b).

The two main units in this belt are the Jurassic (?) and Cretaceous Valdez (?) Group composed of flysch deposits and the McHugh Complex composed of oceanic metavolcanic sequences tectonically mixed with metaclastic rocks derived from a continental magmatic arc. Deformation of the McHugh Complex is characterized by pervasive, closely spaced shear fractures and is melange-like in some areas. Deformation of the Valdez (?) Group is characterized by tight folding that was initiated before the sediments were completely lithified. The folds have steeply dipping axial surfaces that are overturned to the northwest in some areas and to the southeast in other areas. The Jurassic and(or) Cretaceous McHugh Complex is separated from the Valdez (?) Group by the Eagle River thrust fault. The Valdez (?) Group was probably deposited primarily on oceanic crust that was collapsed against the continental margin in latest Cretaceous to early Tertiary time.
An accurate belt of upper Paleozoic to lower Mesozoic rocks to the north and west had been deformed, accreted to the continental margin, and intruded by plutons prior to the deposition of the Jurassic (?) and Cretaceous sediments. Rocks of the continental terrane that underlie the Wrangell and Talkeetna Mountains and the Alaska Range are locally exposed in the map area north and west of the Knik fault zone. Near the village of Eklutna, the junction between the two terranes is marked by an ophiolitic assemblage.

The information is of value to the State of Washington Department of Ecology in its management decisions in this area where heavy ground-water withdrawals have resulted in increasing annual water-level declines.
\nThe 10-inch well is 750 feet deep and penetrates six aquifer zones (A through F) in basalt. The upper 60 feet of the well is cased while the remainder of the hole is open in the basalt. The well was test pumped during drilling and showed specific capacities of (1) 0.65 gpm (gallon per minute) per foot of drawdown when at the 258-foot depth and open to aquifers A and B. (2) 0.62 gpm per foot of drawdown when at the 540-foot depth and open to aquifers A through D, and (3) 22 gpm foot of drawdown when at full 750-foot depth and open to all six aquifers.
\nTo supplement the driller's log of the well, borehole geophysical logging provided information on natural gamma radiation, water temperature and resistivity, downhole movement (via flowmeter) of the water, and borehole diameter (via caliper log). Upon completion of the well each aquifer zone was isolated from the others by cement seals, and piezometer pipes were installed to each zone to allow definition of the vertical hydraulic gradient and an estimate of the vertical ground-water movement in the area, along with chemical-quality sampling of the various zones and monitoring of any changes in water quality with time. The initial measurements of water levels showed that the levels generally decrease with aquifer depth, with about 200 feet of head difference existing between the uppermost and lowermost aquifer zones. Another pipe, installed for providing thermometer access, permits recording the geothermal gradient with depth in the well, and provides another basis for estimating vertical ground-water movement in the area.
\nPrior to isolation of the various aquifer zones, the composite water level was recovering from the cessation of pumping at the end of the 1970 irrigation season. On April 6, 1971, this composite water level had begun declining, presumably as a result of p[umping of an irrigation well 1 mile to the northwest, By May 6, after the aquifer zones had been isolated and piezometer pieces installed, water levels in aquifers E and F had declined 11 feet in 15 days, in response to pumping for irrigation in the area. Water levels in aquifers B, C, and D declined somewhat, but mostly in response to the draining of these aquifers to deeper aquifers down the many deep-well boreholes in the area.

The test wells provide information on ground-water conditions where large-scale pumping from wells is rapidly increasing or ids expected to increase, but where data available from existing wells are incomplete and fail to provide adequate guidance for management of the area;s ground-water resources.
\nThe upper 60 feet of the Almira well has a 10-inch casing below this depth the well is uncased in basalt. Four major aquifer zones are penetrated by the well. Geophysical logging during drilling provided data on hole diameter, water resistivity (mineralization) and temperature, and natural radiation of the rock units. These data supplemented the driller's log as a basis for final selection of the aquifers to be monitored. Two pumping tests showed that (1) when the well was 546 feet deep and was pumped at a rate of about 510 gpm (gallons per minute) for 9 1/2 hours, the specific capacity was 92 gpm per foot of drawndown; and (2) at the final 750-foot depth, with all four aquifers contributing water and the well being pumped at a rate of 525 gpm for 24 hours, the specific capacity was 96 gpm per foot of drawdown. Water from the well when drilled to its final depth of 750 feet is slightly warmer and somewhat more mineralized than when the well was only 546 feet deep.
\nFour piezometer pipes were installed in the well so that\neach reflected the head in a specific aquifer zone that is\nhydraulically isolated from the other aquifer zones by cement\nseals. The maximum difference in water levels between the\nuppermost and lowermost aquifers after the zones were isolated\nwas 180 feet; the difference may increase somewhat as the\nheads in the aquifers continue to adjust after isolation.\nAn access pipe also was provided for an instrument to measure\nthe geothermal gradient.
\nThe data that have been obtained from the test-observation\nwell and that which will be available from it in the\nfuture are expected to provide invaluable guidance for management of the ground-water resources.

Withdrawals have resulted in a water-level decline of 27 feet, which adversely affects the discharge rate of individual wells. Furthermore, excessive pumpage has resulted in progressive deterioration of water quality. Over a 20-year period, hardness has increased from 70 milligrams per liter to 135 milligrams per liter and dissolved-solids content has increased from 250 milligrams per liter to 370 milligrams per liter.
\nTwo new supply wells were drilled in the southern part of the Depot and were tested to determine aquifer properties and probable production rate. The hydraulic conductivity determined from these tests ranged from about 350 to nearly 600 gallons per day per square foot. The transmissivity for the full thickness of the aquifer is in the range of 7,500 to 12,000 gallons per day per foot.<.p>\n

The two new supply wells can be pumped at a combined rate of about 140 gallons per minute. If pumpage in the existing well field is reduced by the same amount, some recovery of water levels in the field will occur and the trend in water quality deterioration may slow or even reverse.

Combined with the records from gaging stations located at some of the sites, the data are sufficient to describe some of the channel and flow characteristics typical of each of two major hydrologic areas, the Yukon River Region and the South-Central Region. Although each region follows general hydrologic trends, least squares relations indicate each exhibits its own particular deviations.
Average values of the hydraulic and geometric properties of rivers were used to illustrate their application to practical engineering problems, namely the computation of depth of channel scour and of bedload discharge. For design purposes, caution is recommended when making computations based on average values. In the absence of other data, however, the average data become useful predictive tools.
Floods and high water occurred throughout the summer of 1971 in south-central Alaska. Snow cover, 150 percent of average, in the mountains on May 1 caused local snowmelt floods from mid-May to mid-July. The peak discharge of 265,000 cfs (cubic feet per second) on July 15 at Copper River near Chitina was the highest in 22 years of record.
However, the major flood period was August 8-11. Precipitation totals of 3 to 9 inches during August 5-11 were recorded in an area extending northeastward from Iliamna Lake to Palmer, Talkeetna, and Paxson Lake. The principal flood areas were the upper Copper, Matanuska, Susitna, Chakachatna, and Kvichak River basins. Flooding in the Anchorage area was not severe. Total damage caused by the August flood is estimated to be 8 to 10 million dollars of which 6 million dollars occurred in the Matanuska Valley.
Extreme floods occurred in the Matanuska Valley. A lake near Sutton on an unnamed tributary to Granite Creek breached its embankment, which released a peak discharge in Granite Creek on August 10 of 58,600 cfs, 23.4 times the probable 50-year flood. Other streams near Sutton, tributary to the Matanuska River, had peak discharges 1.8 to 8.9 times the probable 50-year flood. The Matanuska River at Palmer had a peak discharge of 82,100 cfs, 1.2 times the probable 50-year flood. Downstream near Bodenburg Butte, an area was inundated when the Matanuska River overtopped a dike. Another extreme flood occurred at the Chakachatna River near Tyonek on August 11 where the peak discharge was estimated to be 470,000 cfs. The peak was caused by lateral erosion of a channel constriction formed by Barrier Glacier at the outlet of Chakachamna Lake.
Hydrologic data for planning, discussions of antecedent conditions, and meteorology along with a description of the floods and flood damage are included. Tables of storm precipitation, peak discharge data, sediment data, and discharge for the June-August period are also included.
