(2) the complex Tempe province, which comprises a number of younger volcanic and sedimentary blanket deposits over an ancient, highly cratered crust forming a plateau in the southwestern quadrant; and (3) a plains province, consisting of northern wind-swept, cratered plains and some younger subpolar deposits in the northeast corner of the quadrangle, plus less cratered plains surrounding much of the Tempe and Alba regions. The plateau, informally named the Tempe Plateau and part of the proposed formal term Tempe Terra, is separated from the main regions of cratered martian highlands to the south by Kasei Vallis, appearing at the extreme southeast corner of the map, which slopes northeastward onto Chryse Planitia.

For the study, usable ground water is considered to be that which contains less than 10,000 mg/L dissolved solids. Using a group of geohydrologic parameters derived from or combining 21 categories of basic data, established from study and interpretation of well cuttings and geophysical logs, a series of 32 regional maps and 8 stratigraphic cross sections was constructed. For each of the eight geologic units delineated in the subsurface, the maps illustrate the distribution of waste-storage potential in terms of areal extent, depth below land surface, sand-shale geometry, and the approximate sodium chloride concentration of a unit 's nonusable ground water. In areas where the geologic units contain nonusable ground water, the depth below land surface and the thickness of potential waste-storage reservoir and reservoir-seal combinations are variable. The range in variability appears to be broad enough to meet the need for a wide choice among the geologic requirements that would normally be considered in selecting specific waste-storage sites for detailed examination. The models give the Susquehanna River Basin Commission tools to estimate effects of water-resource developments upstream from Waverly upon four gaged sites and two ungaged sites within the study reach. The models were used to simulate a 32-year record of daily flows at the two ungaged sites. Low-flow frequency curves for simulated flows at these sites were used to estimate 7-day low-flows at the 10-year recurrence interval of 540 and 770 cubic feet per second, respectively.
\nThe model errors, differences between model results and observed streamflow at gaged sites, are considered to be within reasonable limits and overall quality of simulated streamflow and low-flow frequency curves is considered good. (Woodard-USGS)

Scholl and Hopkins (1969) report that a sedimentary basin underlies the offshore area. More recent data, which form the basis of part of this report, show the basin is deepest beneath Norton Sound; also, the basin has sufficient depth and areal extent that the basin may be a target for development of hydrocarbon resources after Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Lease Sale 57. The informal, but widely used, name for the basin is Norton Basin.
The following discussion includes regional geology, geologic history, and offshore structure and stratigraphy as background data to discussion of the hydrocarbon potential and resource appraisal of the offshore area. Sections on environmental geology and on the technology and manpower needed and available for development of offshore resources are also included.
