While no lives were lost, 21,700 homes were affected and 96 million dollars of damage resulted.

General geology and chronology of pre-late Miocene Cenozoic sedimentary rocks","docAbstract":"This study focuses attention on Cenozoic sedimentary rocks in the Basin and Range Province of Arizona. The known occurrences of uranium and anomalous radioactivity in these rocks are associated with sediments that accumulated in a low energy environment characterized by fine-grained clastics, including important tuffaceous materials, and carbonate rocks. Most uranium occurrences, in these rocks appear to be stratabound. \r\n\r\nEmphasis was placed on those sedimentary materials that pre-date the late Cenozoic Basin and Range disturbance. They are deformed and crop out on pedimented range blocks and along the province interface with the Transition Zone. Three tentative age groups are recognized: Group I - Oligocene, pre-22 m.y., Group II - early Miocene - 22 m.y. - 16 m.y., and Group III - middle Miocene - 16 m.y. to 13--10 m.y. Regionally, these three groups contain both coarse to fine-grained red clastics and low energy lighter colored 'lacustrine' phases. \r\n\r\nEach of the three groups has been the object of uranium exploration. Group II, the early Miocene strata, embraces the Anderson Mine - Artillery region host rocks and also the New River - Cave Creek early Miocene beds-along the boundary with the Transition Zone. \r\n\r\nThese three groups of rocks have been tectonically deformed to the extent that original basins of deposition cannot yet be reconstructed. However, they were considerably more extensive in size than the late Cenozoic basins the origin of which deformed the former.\r\n\r\nGroup II rocks are judged to be of prime interest because of: (1) the development and preservation of organic matter in varying lithologies, (2) apparent contemporaneity with silicic volcanic centers, (3) influence of Precambrian crystalline rocks, and (4) relative outcrop continuity near the stable Transition Zone. Rainfall in excess of 30 inches was unofficially reported at several locations, while the highest 24-hour amount recorded by the National·Weather Service was 29.05 inches at Albany in Shackelford County.
\nMajor flooding occurred on the Medina River and triputaries above Medina Lake and on the Guadalupe River and tributaries above Canyon Lake. Minor to severe flooding occurred on the tributaries of the Nueces River, on the Clear Fork Brazos River and tributaries, and on the Llano and Pedernales Rivers, which are tributaries of the Colorado River.
\nPeak discharges at several streamflow stations exceeded the historic peaks, and the flood magnitude and frequency data for the Guadalupe River above Canyon Lake, the Medina River near Pipe Creek, and Clear Fork Brazos River indicate that the August 1978 flood had a recurrence interval in excess of 100 years. The highest unit discharge observed during this flood was 3,010 cubic feet per second from a 14.1-square-mil.e drainage area of Spring Creek, which is tributary to the Pedernales River.

Samples were collected over the period 1969-1976 at approximately six-week intervals at 36 stations. The stations were located along the axis of the Bay from Calaveras Point in South San Francisco Bay to the town of Rio Vista on the Sacramento River. On most cruises vertical profiles of the water properties were taken at 12 of the 36 stations. The samples were analyzed for the following core parameters: salinity, temperature, light transmission, chlorophyll a fluorescence, dissolved oxygen, orthophosphate, nitrate+nitrite, nitrite, ammonia, and silicate. Other analyses performed on selected samples included: particulate organic carbon, alkalinity, pH, pCO2, and suspended particulate weight. The results of these analyses and the analytical methods used are documented in this report.

The average annual streamflow through the area was less than 600 acre-feet (0.7 cubic hectometer), and the water carried little sediment except during floods which result from intense local storms. Most of the surface water seeps into the ground or is diverted for irrigation downstream from the study area.
Ground-water data were insufficient to define the potentiometric surface in most of the area. The water level in each of the three observation wells in the study area is above the coal layer in the immediate area of the well. A larger network of wells is needed to define the potentiometric surface throughout the area and to show its relation to surface water and the location of the coal layers.
The short period of this investigation coincided with a drought in southern Utah. Hydrologic data should be collected continuously to establish a hydrologic base before mining begins, and data collection should be continued through the periods of mining and reclamation.

Mapping on seven Landsat images in an area of about 100,000 km2 reveals that lineaments are best developed along azimuths of N. 60° E. to N. 90° E. and N. 30° W. to N. 60° W. Although their exact structural nature and origin are not known, these features are visualized as major zones of weakness that subdivide the crystalline Precambrian basement into discrete blocks. Several of the most prominent surface lineaments can be related to basement faults. The blocks bounded by these lineaments constitute low-relief uplifts that define the southern margin of the Williston Basin.
During deposition of the Upper Cretaceous Pierre Shale, lineaments were the sites of tectonic activity. Members of the Pierre are relatively continuous throughout the area and are well dated by biostratigraphic zonation. The base of the Mobridge Member is the highest structural datum available for regional mapping. Northeast-trending surface lineaments near the White and Cheyenne Rivers have a clear expression on a subsurface structural map of this horizon. The Ardmore Bentonite Bed lies approximately 300 m (980 ft) below the Mobridge; subsurface structure contours on this datum show the active lineaments trending northwest. Isopach maps of two rock-stratigraphic units between the Ardmore and Mobridge reflect the shift in tectonic activity from early northwest sets of lineaments to later northeast trends.
The Kimbeto EMRIA study site, an area of about 20 square miles (52 km2), is located on the south margin of the San Juan Basin on the gently northward-dipping strata of the Upper Cretaceous Fruitland Formation and the Kirtland Shale. The coal beds are mainly in the lower 150 feet (45 m) of the Fruitland Formation. Coal resources--measured, indicated, and inferred--with less than 400 feet (120 m) of overburden in the site are 69,085,000 short tons (62,660,100 metric tons), 369,078,000 short tons (334,754,000 metric tons), and 177,803,000 short tons (161,267,000 metric tons) respectively. About 68 percent of these resources are overlain by 200 feet (60 m) or less of overburden. The apparent rank of the coal ranges from subbituminous B to subbituminous A. The average Btu/lb value of 14 core samples from the site on the as-received basis is 8,240 (4580 Kcal/kg), average ash content is 23.4 percent, and average sulfur content is 0.5 percent. Analyses of coal from the Kimbeto EMRIA study site show significantly higher ash content and significantly lower contents of volatile matter, fixed carbon, carbon, and a significantly lower heat of combustion when compared with other coal analyses from the Rocky Mountain province.

includes establishing limits for wastewater effluents discharged into Indiana streams. A digital model calibrated to conditions in West Fork Blue River was used to predict alternatives for future waste loadings that would be compatible with Indiana stream water-quality standards defined for two critical hydrologic conditions, summer and winter low flows.
Alternative waste loads that would permit instream dissolved-oxygen concentrations of at least 5.0 milligrams per liter for West Fork Blue River in Washington County, Ind., were determined. All point-source waste loads that potentially impact West Fork Blue River are in the town of Salem. The Salem municipal wastewater-treatment facility is the only facility in the modeled reach that has a National Pollution Discharge Elimination System permit to discharge organic waste.
In-stream dissolved-oxygen concentration averaged 96.5 percent of saturation at selected sites on West Fork Blue River during two 24-hour summer surveys. This high dissolved-oxygen concentration reflects small carbonaceous and nitrogenous waste loads, adequate dilution of waste by the stream, and natural reaeration. Nonpoint source waste loads accounted for an average of 53.2 percent of the total carbonaceous biochemical-oxygen demand and 90.2 percent of the nitrogenous biochemical-oxygen demand.
Waste-load assimilation was studied for both summer and annual 7-day, 10-year low flow. Natural streamflow for these conditions was zero, so no benefit from dilution was provided. The projected reaeration capacity of the stream was not sufficient to maintain at least 5 milligrams per liter dissolved oxygen in the stream with current waste-discharge restrictions. Consequently, during low flows, advanced waste treatment (nitrification-denitrification) or some other form of ammonia removal may be necessary to meet current Indiana stream water-quality standards for ammonia and dissolved oxygen. During winter low flow, ammonia toxicity, rather than dissolved-oxygen concentration, was the limiting water-quality criterion downstream from the Salem wastewater-treatment facility.

supply at Kipahulu District, Haleakala National Park, Maui, Hawaii","docAbstract":"Kipahulu Valley drains an area of 12.7 square miles on the southeast side of the island of Maui, Hawaii. The aquifer underlying the lower reaches of the valley comprises recent lava flows. Fresh groundwater occurs in the aquifer as a thin basal lens, which discharges as diffuse seeps along the shore. Measured basal-water heads were 1.3 and 2.4 feet at respective distances of 600 and 3,500 feet from the shore. Chemical analyses of groundwater samples indicate that the water is potable. Wells to develop the basal water should be located at least 1,000 feet from shore. Well penetration should be limited to the upper half of the basal lens, and drawdown caused by pumping should not be greater than half of the head above sea level in order to avoid the risk of contamination by underlying saline water.

Near-surface water from a depth of 2 m is sampled continuously while the vessel is underway or water at depths to 100 m can be collected with an in situ pump, in which case the sampling depth and temperature are measured by an in situ probe. The system is comprised of commercially available instruments, equipment, and components, and of specialized items designed and fabricated by the authors. Data can be read from digital displays and analog strip-chart recorders. Tables and figures describing specialized items are included.
