This report provides information about the current quality of ground waters in southeastern Idaho and discusses the natural and manmade environmental controls on that quality. This information will be useful in planning and monitoring the development and use of the ground-water resources of southeastern Idaho.
The southeastern corner of Idaho, as described in this report, encompasses an area of about 4,000 mil in Bannock, Bear Lake, Caribou, and part of Power Counties. The popu- lation of the area in 1975, based on best estimates by the Idaho Division of Budget, Policy Planning, and Coordination (1976) was 75,200. About 80 percent of the population is in and near the city of Pocatello, which is the second largest population center in the State.
Pocatello's economy depends largely on manufacturing and industrial processing, which includes chemicalfertilizer plants. The econ- omy in the rural areas depends largely on agriculture--both dry and irrigated farming are practiced. Mining is important and expected to dominate the economy in the eastcentral part of the area in the future.
Natural resources include phosphate ore, which makes up about 35 percent of the U.S. reserves (U.S. Department of Interior and U.S. Department of Agriculture, 1977); ground water, which mostly underlies the several intermontane valleys that dissect the area; and hot springs, which indicate that geothermal energy sources may underlie part of the area. Also, current (1978) speculation is that petroleum reserves may be present in the vicinity of Bear Lake. Development of more sprink- ler-irrigated lands, increases in population, and growth of phosphate mining are expected to place stress on the ground-water resources, both in quality and quantity.
The purpose of this report is to present the results of a study whose primary objectives were (1) to provide current waterquality data representative of the water in several different aquifers (water- bearing formations) in the study area, and (2) to relate these data to natural and manmade environmental controls. The wells sampled during this study establish a quasi-network, which could be resampled in the future to document and analyze changes (if any) in ground-water quality. Based on this information, planners and water managers could better understand the causeand-effect relations controlling water quality and could better manage land and water-resource development.
The report is designed for ease of reading and presentation. It uses maps, tables, and abbreviated text to describe geology, hydrology, and ground-water quality and how they are interrelated. Some practical ways for improving water quality are discussed for the benefit of individual water users. The field data collected in making the study are contained in the Data Section of this report.
The authors gratefully acknowledge the many individual well owners, municipal officials, and private industries that provided well information and allowed access to their properties and collection of water samples. Without their help, this work could not have been done. Water samples were collected at 103 well sites. Waterlevel measurements were made at 98 of these sites during July, August, and September of 1976.
This study was made by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Idaho Department of Water Resources. A similar study is being made (1978) in north Idaho. Other studies are planned, specifically to obtain ground-water-quality data in areas where land and water-resource development is expected or accelerating.

The dissolved-oxygen reduction is due only in part to the municipal-waste discharges which enter the river. In addition, concentrations of pesticides have been reported consistently at one long-term station on the river, and trace metals have been reported at two long-term monitoring sites.
The U.S. Geological Survey conducted an intensive study of the L'Anguille River basin during the summer and fall of 1978. This study was done in cooperation with the Arkansas Department of Pollution Control and Ecology to fulfill the requirements of section 208 of Public Law 92-500. An assessment of the general water quality was made, the causes of stream-dissolved-oxygen reductions were determined, and the occurrence of pesticides and trace metals in the basin was documented. A steady-state, segmented, dissolved-oxygen model was calibrated and used to project simulated dissolved-oxygen profiles.
Pesticides are used extensively in the basin and their occurrence in streams throughout the basin is documented. Concentrations of DDT from the river were as high as 110 micrograms per kilogram in streambed material, whereas 1,600 micrograms per kilogram of DDE and 530 micrograms per kilogram of DDD were found in bottom-feeding fish. In addition, toxaphene concentrations of 45 micrograms per kilogram were found in streambed material and concentrations of 3,400 micrograms per kilogram were found in fish.
Concentrations of iron and manganese, at times, exceeded recommended limits for human consumption. Also, dissolved solids, chloride, and sulfate occasionally exceeded the water-quality standards set by the State.
Streambed materials consist of deposited sand, silt, clay, and organic matter. The respiration of bacteria, fungi, and benthic invertebrates, which feed on the organic matter, accounts for most of the dissolved-oxygen reduction in the river. The sources of the streambed materials include municipal wastes, agricultural fertilizers, fluvial sediment, and natural organic matter. Model projections indicate that a reduction of 60 percent in the streambed-oxygen demand would allow the stream-dissolved-oxygen concentrations to remain at or greater than 5.0 milligrams per liter.

The under-ice surface would serve as a trap for pollutants such as oil and gas released from the sea bed. A knowledge of the morphology of the undersurface of the ice is a first step in understanding the sea-bed interactions and in evaluating the quantities, configuration, and dispersal patterns of sub-ice pollutants. Investigations show thicker sea-ice correlates with a thin snow cover and thin sea-ice underlies elongate snow ridges.
In early May, 1978, the relationships between under-ice morphology, sea bed morphology, tidal currents, and variations in snow thickness were studied. At three sites representing three different environments--protected bay, deep, open lagoon, and narrow tidal channel--trenches were cut through the ice. The trenches were parallel and perpendicular to the sastrugi-sculptured northeast-southwest trending snow ridge pattern. Snow depth, ice thickness, and ice drafts were measured and an upward-directed side-scanning sonar was towed to examine the morphology of the under-ice surface in an area 100 m square.
Snow depth and ice thickness vary about 30-40 cm and exhibit a negative correlation--thin ice coinciding with a thicker insulating snow cover. The areal snow and ice morphology patterns reinforced the correlation. Elongate ridge and trough patterns on the under-ice surface parallel the surface snow ridge patterns on wavelengths typically 10 m wide, yielding sub-ice voids of 25 to 47 x 103m3/km2 (600-1200 barrels per acre). Diving observations indicate a smaller set of depressions 5 cm or less in depth, oriented parallel to the ice crystal fabric, and an escape of sub-ice released air to the snow-ice interface.
The results imply that there is a seasonal stability to the snow ridge pattern and that oil concentrations under the ice would be indicated by surficial snow morphology in the fast ice zone. Spreading directions would be enhanced in the elongate dimensions of the under-ice ridges and troughs, that is, upwind and downwind. In spring, gases will leak to the surface.

It extends across the boundary between, and includes parts of, the Piedmont and Atlantic Coastal Plain physiographic provinces. The rocks in the Piedmont are mainly intensely folded sericite schist and granite gneiss containing irregular masses of amphibolite and feldspathic biotite gneiss and scattered igneous intrusive rocks. Most of the crystalline rocks are thought to be of Paleozoic age, but some of the intrusive rocks may be younger. The crystalline rocks are cut by a major unconformity and are overlain by sedimentary formations ranging in age from Cretaceous to Miocene. The valuable kaolin deposits occur in the Cretaceous beds, undivided, and in the Huber Formation which is of Paleocene to middle Eocene age. The resources of kaolin in the district are estimated in millions of metric tons as follows: reserves, 100; subeconomic resources, 700 to 900; undiscovered resources, probably 700 to 1,000. \r\n\r\nIn addition to kaolin, the leading mineral commodity mined in the district, crushed stone and sand are now being produced, and fuller's earth and a minor amount of limestone were formerly produced. The crushed stone is quarried from igneous rocks in the Piedmont province. The sand is washed from the Cretaceous beds, undivided. This report complements the previous reports by providing new petrographic and geochemical data for samples from St. Paul and St. George Islands and from two dredge hauls near St. George Island (Fig. 1).
The geologic setting of the Pribilof Islands region is given by Barth (1956), Hopkins and Einarsson (1965), Cox and others (1966), Hopkins and others (1969), Marlow and others (1976), and Hopkins and Silberman (1978). Quaternary basalt (Table 1) (Cox and others, 1966; Hopkins, 1976; Simpson and others, 1979) is extruded onto the structurally high Pribilof Ridge (Marlow and others, 1976) which consists of rocks as old as late Jurassic (Vallier and others, 1979). Barth (1956) recognized the structural implication of alkalic volcanism in back-arc environments. We plan to interpret alkalic volcanism in the Pribilof Islands within the context of recent tectonic and petrologic findings in the southern Bering Sea.

It is an area long used for outdoor recreation and includes a part of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.
Water resources in the county are derived from precipitation. The Lehigh and Delaware Rivers, bordering the northwestern and southeastern parts, respectively, are the drains for surface-water and ground-water discharge and are essentially unused for water supply.
Water budgets were calculated for average conditions when annual precipitation is 45 in. Sixty percent of this or 27 in. runs off and 65 percent of that runoff or 17 in. moves through the ground-water reservoir. Evapotranspiration varies little between wet and dry years and averages 18 in.
Bedrock consists of Silurian and Devonian sedimentary rocks, which are intensely deformed by folding in the southeastern third of the county and are moderately deformed in the remainder. During the Pleistocene Epoch, glaciers repeatedly advanced across most of the county. The last of these advances deposited a terminal moraine that extends across the southwestern part of the county. The glaciers eroded pre-existing deposits, veneered the upland, and filled valleys with unconsolidated deposits that changed surface-water drainage and altered ground-water gradients.
Water occurs in fractures and solution openings in the consolidated rocks and in intergranular openings in the unconsolidated rocks and weathered calcareous sandstones. Water that reaches the water table moves down the hydraulic gradient to points of discharge, moving both laterally and vertically away from ground-water divides and toward streams. The thickness of the fresh-water system is 800 ft or more, but little water is yielded to wells by aquifers more than 500 ft below land surface. Ground-water recharge is 600 to 650 (gal/min)/mi2; and about 1.6 billion gallons per square mile is stored in the ground-water reservoir.
Currently the most productive wells are in consolidated-rock aquifers; however, specific-capacity data suggest that wells in the unconsolidated deposits have potentially larger yields. Well yield is affected primarily by the distribution, size, and interconnection of the water-bearing openings and by topographic location, available recharge, well-depth, location within the flow system, pumping rate and duration of pumping, and interference from other pumping wells. Potential yields of properly located, drilled, and developed wells have been calculated for the aquifers. The median yields calculated from specific capacity data from the unconsolidated deposits, are 200 gal/min; from the Bloomsburg Formation, 100 gal/min; and from the Poplar Gap Member of the Catskill Formation, 70 gal/min. Median yields of the other units range from 15 to 40 gal/min. In general, enough water for domestic use can be obtained throughout the county. Large-scale development and consumptive use of the ground water will diminish baseflow of the streams.
The temperature of water measured in wells ranges from 44° to 57°F and is largely dependent on altitude of the land surface and depth to the producing zone. Hardness of water in the noncarbonate rocks averages 3 to 4 grains per gallon, or about half that of the carbonate rocks. Water from most of the bedrock aquifers is low in dissolved solids, acidic, and soft. In carbonate rocks, the water tends to be hard and slightly alkaline. Excessive amounts of iron and manganese are encountered in water from the unconsolidated deposits and, locally, from the Catskill and Shawangunk Formations.

The spatial distribution of the aftershocks in the first 15 days and the focal mechanism of the main shock and selected aftershocks suggest that faulting took place primarily to the southeast of the main shock along a 25-km segment of the Calaveras fault zone at a depth of 4 to 12 km. The motion was right-lateral strike-slip along a nearly vertical fault plane. Discontinuous surface rupture was observed along a 14.4-km length of the recently active trace of the fault southeast of Coyote Lake, but no surface faulting was seen in the epicentral area. A maximum 5-mm fault offset was recorded near San Felipe Lake, about 16 km south of the main shock.
There was no prominent foreshock activity. The cumulative number of aftershocks (N) versus magnitude (M) could be described by the equation log N= 3.33 - 0.75 M, in the magnitude range between 1 and 3.5. The number and size of aftershocks appeared to be much less than that expected for a main shock of magnitude 5.7.

Passage of some of these materials is recognized by a sudden increase in turbidity over background levels and the presence of white particulate matter. Water samples taken during these events are usually extremely high in organic content. During a 4-day reconnaissance of water quality in May 1977, white-to-brown extremely turbid water crossed the border on three occasions. On one of these occasions , the water was intensively sampled. The total organic-carbon concentration ranged from 80 to 161 milligrams per liter (mg/l); dissolved organic carbon ranged from 34 to 42 mg/l, and the chemical oxygen demand was as high as 510 mg/l. River profiles showed a dissolved-oxygen sag, with the length of the zone of depressed dissolved-oxygen concentrations varying seasonally. During the summer months, dissolved-oxygen concentrations in the river were lower and the zone of depressed dissolved-oxygen concentrations was longer. The largest increases in dissolved-oxygen concentration from reaeration occurred at the three drop structures and the rock weir near Seeley. The effects of oxygen demanding materials crossing the border extended as far as Highway 80, 19.5 miles downstream from the international boundary at Calexico. Fish kills and anaerobic conditions were also detected as far as Highway 80. Standard bacteria indicator tests for fecal contamination showed a very high health-hazard potential near the border. Flood inundation maps can be prepared from flood data presented in this report.

(other than mineral fuels and construction materials) mineral occurrences in the Anchorage quadrangle, Alaska. All references to most reports of the Geological Survey, the U.S. Bureau of Mines, and the State of Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys and its predecessor State and Territorial agencies released before January 1, 1979, are summarized. Certain, mainly statistical, reports such as the annual Minerals Yearbook of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the biennial and annual reports of the State of Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys and its predecessor State and Territorial agencies are not included. Also not included are data on many claims about which little more than their locations is known (for example, MacKevett and Holloway, 1977 (0F77-169A), p. 8-10). These omissions should not be interpreted as a judgment on my part that the claims are not valid mineral occurrences, but only that there are insufficient data to describe any mineral deposit that might be present.
This report is divided into three parts: a section made up of summaries of references arranged alphabetically by occurrence name; a section that lists synonyms for names in the first section, claim names, and the names of operators and owners of mines and prospects; and a section that lists, by author, all references summarized in the first section.
