deep. Pumping-test data show that the fracture system is interconnected to distances more than 1,000 feet from the wells. Recharge occurs through overlying clayey till, and continuous pumping may induce recharge from surface-water sources. Chemical analyses indicate no water-quality problems. Systematic collection of data on pumpage , water level, and chemical quality could help to determine the long-term adequacy of the aquifer system. The aquifer system crops out in a band 5 to 10 miles wide, that trends southeast across the State from the Warren-Yazoo County line to northeastern Wayne County. In the northwest part of the area, the formations dip to the southwest at 12 feet per mile. At the southeastern end of the outcrop, the dip is 42 feet per mile. The average dip for the entire area is 30 feet per mile. The aquifers are of primary importance for domestic and farm use. Total withdrawal in 1977 was about 1.4 million gallons per day. Since 1963 water levels have declined an average of between 0.05 and 2 feet per year. Water quality is generally good although in some places there are objectionably high concentrations of iron and color. Also included are descriptions of Cretaceous and/or Tertiary lavas of the Yemen Volcanics, Miocene(?) alkali granite, Pliocene caprock of the Guma salt dome, and late Pleistocene and Holocene basalts of the Aden Volcanic Series (?). The petrographic studies permitted the selection of 11 samples of rock for future use in obtaining isotopic analyses for age determinations. Analyses of these rock specimens for trace amounts of gold, indium, mercury, selenium, and thallium completed the geochemical studies. Results of these analyses are interpreted to show that regional geochemical exploration should be undertaken for base and precious metals near Jibal Hufash, the Manakhah area, the region around Al Bayda, the Sa'dah-Majadh area, and the Wadi Jawf area. Additional studies of trace elements in commercial salt deposits of the YAR should be made to evaluate the amounts of mercury and selenium in this industrial raw material.
Waters from geysers, hot springs, and pools of Yellowstone National Park have been analyzed by numerous investigators extending back nearly ten decades. Large compilations of complete major ion analyses of the thermal waters have been reported by Gooch and Whitfield (1888) 38 analyses; Allen and Day (1935) 94 complete and 127 partial major ion analyses, Rowe and others (1973) 166 analyses including many previous chemical analyses of the same feature; and Thompson and others (1975) 242 complete and 299 partial major ion analyses. Smaller compilations of the thermal water chemistry have been reported by Douglass (1939) 12 analyses; White and others (1963) 6 analyses; and Scott (1964) 10 analyses. Partial chemical analyses have been reported by White and others (1956) and by Morey and others (1961) for dissolved silica; Noguichi and Nix (1963) for dissolved silica and major anions; Araki and Noguichi (1969) for dissolved silica, molybdenum, vanadium, and major anions. Here we report 422 complete major ion analyses from 330 different locations of geysers, hot springs, and pools, collected from 1974 to 1978. Many of the analyses from Upper, Midway, Lower, and Norris Geyser Basin are recollections of features previously reported.

The test well was drilled to determine the feasibility of disposing of liquid waste from the city's secondary treatment plant. Drilling of the test well began in July 1973 and was completed in November 1974. A conventional circulation mud-rotary drilling method was used to a depth of 1,146 feet below land surface and a reverse circulation air-lift method was used to a depth of 3,513 feet. The greatest chloride concentration of water withdrawn from the test well was 31,000 milligrams per liter. The test well, uncased and open to dolomitic limestone between 2,006 and 3,513 feet, yielded 392 gallons per minute with a drawdown of approximately 100 feet.
