The inflow and outflow discharges of the probable maximum flood were computed to be 23,600 and 23,100 cubic feet per second, respectively, and of the standard project flood, 9,400 and 8,800 cubic feet per second, respectively. A rating curve computed for the dam spillway indicates that water-surface elevations produced at the dam by runoff from both the standard project flood and the maximum probable flood would be above the top of the spillway abutments. The 10- and 100-year peak discharges at the Butternut Creek gaging station were computed by the HEC-1 program of the Corps of Engineers to be 2 ,160 and 3,450 cubic feet, respectively, as compared to 1,680 and 2,810 cubic feet per second computed by a log-Pearson type III analysis of the station data. The HEC-1 values are within the 5- and 95-percent confidence limits of the log-Pearson type III values. These findings are based on a water-quality reconnaissance of 129 treated public supplies throughout the State during the period November 1977 through February 1978. While primary drinking water regulation exceedences were infrequent, lead, selenium, and gross alpha radioactivity in a very few water supplies were above established maximum contaminant levels. Additionally, the secondary drinking water regulation parameters--dissolved solids , chloride, sulfate, iron, color, and pH--were occasionally detected in excess of the proposed Federal regulations. The secondary regulations, however, pertain mainly to the aesthetic quality of drinking water and not directly to public health aspects. Withdrawals of fresh water from all surface and underground sources are increasing; they may rise from the rate of 30 billion gallons per day in 1970 to about 60 billion gallons per day in 2020. By 1975 the withdrawal of ground water had increased 70 percent over the 1970 rate and accounted for 22 percent of total fresh-water withdrawal. Substantial increases in ground-water withdrawal must continue if projected water demands are to be met in the future.</p>\n<p>Large variations exist in the availability of and needs for ground water in the region, largely because of the great variety of landforms, climate, and earth materials. More than one-half the region is underlain by rock materials capable of yielding ground water to wells at moderate to large rates; six extensive areas are identified as major ground-water reservoirs. The most significant current problems pertaining to one or more of these ground-water reservoirs are: (1) Progressively declining water levels; (2) water-quality problems; (3) waterlogging; (4) inadequate information; and (5) competition for available supplies. In the future these same problems are expected to persist and generally worsen (especially water-quality deterioration) in most of the major reservoir areas.</p>\n<p>Management opportunities in the region include: (1) Development of new supplies and additional uses of ground water; (2) protection and enhancement of water quality; (3) reduction of waterlogging; (4) energy development from some ground-water reservoirs; (5) improving access to the ground water; (6) increased use of underground space for storage and disposal; and (7) greater use of advanced management and conservation techniques. Conjunctive use of surface and ground water to provide greater available supplies probably is the most promising water-management opportunity. Almost all this area is in the physiographic province known as the Gulf Coastal Plain. Three small areas on the northwest boundary of the region are in the Interior Highlands.</p>\n<p>The Lower Mississippi Region has an abundance of ground water. The geologic structure in that part of the region within the Coastal Plain is an elongated trough which has been filled with permeable materials, resulting in vast subsurface reservoirs. Except in local areas where continued large withdrawals have caused significant water-level declines, these reservoirs are full.</p>\n<p>Recharge to the region's aquifers is primarily from rainfall. Annual rainfall in most of the region is well distributed throughout the year and is sufficient to satisfy evapotranspiration requirements and still provide recharge to the aquifers.</p>\n<p>An estimated 844 billion cubic feet (24 billion cubic meters) of fresh ground water is available for withdrawal annually in the region. Only about one-third of this quantity is being utilized. Therefore, on this basis alone, the region still has much potential for ground-water development.</p>\n<p>The Coastal Plain aquifers within the Lower Mississippi Region contain large reserves of saltwater in the downdip limits of the aquifers. The quantity of saltwater in the region is several times that of freshwater. As desalinization techniques are developed and as more uses are found for saltwater, this reserve could become an important source of water for the region.</p>\n<p>At present (1976), the most productive and potentially productive aquifers or aquifer systems in the region are the Mississippi River valley alluvial aquifer of Quaternary age and the Sparta Sand and the Memphis aquifer (Memphis Sand in Tennessee) of Tertiary age. The Sparta Sand and the Memphis aquifer are heavily utilized and have shown significant water-level declines. However, selected well hydrographs indicate that water levels may be stabilizing under present pumping conditions. The Mississippi River valley alluvial aquifer is the most extensive high-yielding aquifer in the region; yields of several thousand gallons per minute may be obtained at depths of less than 200 feet (61 meters).</p>\n<p>To obtain maximum benefit from the vast quantities of ground water in the region, adequate attention must be given to the effects of proposed development upon the ground-water regime. Knowledge of the geologic structure and hydraulic properties of the aquifer systems is essential to an evaluation of the effects of such development. Some studies have been made in sufficient detail to provide this knowledge, but additional studies are needed.</p>\n<p>Activities that could cause significant changes in the groundwater regime should be undertaken only after all available information has been considered. Failure to seek out and use such information may result in inefficient development of the groundwater resource and, in some instances, degradation of the quality of the resource.</p>\n<p>Some changes always result from ground-water development. The possible changes can be grouped into three categories: hydraulic, water quality, and those affecting the physical framework of the aquifers. Generally, they are small in magnitude and areal extent. Because these changes occur below the ground surface, they are unknown to the ground-water user unless they noticeably affect the quantity or quality of water produced or cause obvious physical effects, such as land subsidence.</p>\n<p>Great advances have been made in hydrologic technology in recent years. Predictive models have been developed that make it possible for the hydroiogist to simulate aquifer responses to proposed development or other stresses. These models would be invaluable tools in progressive water-resources planning and management.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, The objectives of this program are (1) to provide long-term records of water-level fluctuations in representative wells, (2) to facilitate the prediction of water-level trends and indicate future availability of ground-water supplies, and (3) to provide information for use in basic research.</p><p>Water-level data in table 1 are from wells that are measured annually, prior to the irrigation season, to achieve the most natural representation of the static water level. Water-level measurements listed in the column under 1976 may have been made during December 1975 or January, February, March, April, or May, 1976. Measurements listed in the column 1977 may have been made during December 1976 or January, February, March, or April 1977. Figure 1 shows the counties and number of wells therein, where data were obtained for this report.</p><p>Records of water levels in Oklahoma are collected through a cooperative program by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Oklahoma Water Resources Board. The records are tabulated and published by the U.S. Geological Survey on an annual basis.</p><p>The stratigraphic nomenclature and age determinations used in this report are those accepted by the Oklahoma Geological Survey and do not necessarily agree with those of the U.S. Geological Survey except for the Cheyenne Sandstone which is considered to be Purgatoire Sandstone by the Oklahoma Geological Survey (Robert 0. Also included are conventional and normalized partition coefficients for trace elements in each of the coexisting mineral phases and mesostasis from San Francisco Mountain lavas.</p><p>The San Francisco Mountain lavas are from the upper portion of the southeast slope of Humphreys Peak which is composed of three petrographically distinct types: (1) a lower series of hornblende pyroxene andesites, (2) a middle group of hypersthene dacites, and (3) an upper series of olivine andesites. The sequence of volcanic flows was measured and analyzed for the major elements and fifteen trace elements Sc, V, Cr, Cq Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, La, Ce, and Yb) in each of the coexisting mineral phases, groundmass and bulk rock. A pumping depression exists upgradient from the reservation, and water levels have declined an average of 1.0 to 1.5 feet per year since the 1940's. This decline in the water level has led to the cessation of perennial flow in Zanja de Cota Creek that traverses the reservation. In the past this creek was fed by the natural discharge of water from the ground-water basin. Water-bearing rock beneath the reservation is limited in thickness and may become unusable as a water supply source in the near future if water levels continue to decline.</p><p>The chemical quality of water beneath the reservation is generally acceptable for both irrigation and domestic use; however, large-scale pumping could induce the flow of contaminated water from an area just upgradient.</p><p>Declines in ground-water levels and the existence of fecal contamination upgradient from the reservation make the successful development of a groundwater supply for the reservation In addition, there is </span><span>excessive shoaling in some navigation channels, saltwater intrusion into </span><span>usually fresh estuarine reaches, too-high or too-low salinities in </span><span>nursery areas for various estuarine species, and flood damage due to </span><span>hurricanes. </span></p><p><span>The Cape Fear River is the only major North Carolina estuary having a direct connection to the sea. Short-term flow throughout most of its length is dominated by ocean tides. The estuarine reaches of the Neuse-Trent, Tar-Pamlico, Chowan, and Roanoke River systems are at least partly shielded from the effects of ocean tides by the Outer Banks and the broad expanses of Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds. With the probable exception of the Roanoke River, winds are usually the dominant short-term current-producing force in these estuaries and in most of Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds. </span></p><p><span>Freshwater entering the major estuaries is, where not contaminated, of acceptable quality for drinking with minimum treatment. However, iron concentrations in excess of 0.3 milligrams per liter sometimes occur and water draining from swampy areas along the Coastal Plain is often highly colored, but these problems may be remedied with proper treatment. Nuisance-level algal blooms have been a recurring problem on the lower estuarine reaches of the Neuse, Tar-Pamlico, and Chowan rivers where nutrients (compounds of phosphorous and nitrogen) are abundant. The most destructive blooms tend to occur in the summer months during periods of low freshwater discharge and relatively high water temperatures. </span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. The average annual streamflow through the area was less than 600 acre-feet (0.7 cubic hectometer), and the water carried little sediment except during floods which result from intense local storms. Most of the surface water seeps into the ground or is diverted for irrigation downstream from the study area.</p><p>Ground-water data were insufficient to define the potentiometric surface in most of the area. The water level in each of the three observation wells in the study area is above the coal layer in the immediate area of the well. A larger network of wells is needed to define the potentiometric surface throughout the area and to show its relation to surface water and the location of the coal layers.</p><p>The short period of this investigation coincided with a drought in southern Utah. The primary purpose of that investigation was to provide the geohydrological understanding needed to predict the impact of potential phosphate industry operations in the forest on the natural hydrologic system. The investigation involved test drilling, implementation of a hydrologic monitoring network, water-quality sampling, comprehensive aquifer tests, and literature study. The numerous data obtained from the field investigations, laboratory analyses, and published and unpublished sources were published in summary form in an interpretive report (Miller and others, 1978, Impact of potential phosphate mining on the hydrology of Osceola National Forest, Florida: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations 78-6, 159 p.). This report is an index to the type, source, location, and availability of the data used in the interpretive investigation. The report indexes the following water-resources data: geological, geophysical, ground water, surface water, quality of water, meteorological, climatological, aquifer tests, maps, photographs, elevations, and reference publications.
