In June 1972, tropical storm Agnes caused sever flooding in Pennsylvania and southern New York. The flood, on many major streams were the highest known since the river valleys were settled. Maximum discharges were as much as twice the discharge of a 50-year flood. In southern New York, large areas in Corning, Elmire, Wellsville, Salamanca, and in many smaller communities were inundated to depths of several feet. Levels of all of the Finger Lakes were higher than any previously recorded, and extensive flooding of lakeside properties resulted.

The thaw bulb produced by a heated pipeline buried in a stream channel may intercept water confined in shallow unfrozen zones beneath a seasonally frozen layer. Resulting movement of ground water through the thaw bulb might produce quick conditions in the pipeline foundation materials. A digital model showed that such conditions are not likely to occur. Test drilling along the proposed route of the pipeline confirms this conclusion. An exception may be the situation in which the pipeline is buried in fine sand overlying a highly permeable coarse sand or gravel.

The results of model studies demonstrate that the heated trench will focus ground-water discharge near the pipeline, especially in winter. Such discharge will increase the number and size of icings.

Explosive icing mounds apparently result from high crystallization pressures that develop within a closed talik. The thaw bulb close to the buried pipeline relieves the pressure that leads to such conditions.

Potential problems related to thaw-bulb enlargement by heat convection and thaw-instability of fine-grained materials are not treated in this analysis.

In southern New York, large areas in Corning, Elmire, Wellsville, Salamanca, and in many smaller communities were inundated to depths of several feet. Levels of all of the Finger Lakes were higher than any previously recorded, and extensive flooding of lakeside properties resulted.

Aquifer-performance tests and aquifer studies indicate that the limestone beneath the city of Adel and probably most of Cook County contains potable water to a depth of only about 400 to 500 feet and that \"deep\" wells that tap these limestones obtain most of their water from a few thin, highly permeable zones rather than from the entire thickness of the rocks. Below about 500 feet the water is mineralized and not potable without treatment. The yield of \"shallow wells\" is variable and the water generally is corrosive and at places contains appreciable dissolved iron.

The volume of ground water flowing through the Suwannee and Marianna Limestones in Cook County and available for development to properly spaced wells and well fields is estimated to be about 18,000,000 gallons per day. That in the Tampa Foundation is estimated to be about 1,500,000 gallons per day.

Water levels near the center of the Adel well field have declined 38 feet since 1890 and presently are declining at a rate of 1.6 feet per year.

County, about 30 miles north of Los Angeles. The area has two main aquifers, the alluvial aquifer and the underlying Saugus aquifer. These two aquifers are the subject of this investigation. \r\n\r\nThe alluvial aquifer consists of river channel alluvium as much as 200 feet thick with a transmissibility ranging from 50,000 to 325,000 gallons per day per foot and a storage coefficient of i0 to 20 percent. In 1945 about 210,000 acre-feet of recoverable ground water was in storage in the alluvial aquifer. The alluvial aquifer is the major source of ground-water pumpage and has supplied about 600,000 acre-feet of effective pumpage during the period 1945 through 1967. Ground-water pumpage and variations in the quantities of surface-water recharge have caused large fluctuations in the water levels in the alluvial aquifer. \r\n\r\nThe Saugus aquifer has. a maximum saturated thickness of about 3,500 feet and ranges in transmissibility from 2,000 to 200,000 gallons per day per foot. Based on limited available data, the Saugus aquifer may contain as much as 6 million acre-feet of ground water in storage under steady-state conditions. Meager available data indicate the water quality in some areas of the Saugus aquifer is poor so that only a fraction of the ground water in storage in the aquifer may be usable for domestic water supplies. \r\n\r\nFloodflow in the streams in the area is the major source of recharge to the alluvial aquifer and the underlying Saugus aquifer. The chemical quality of the ground water is largely dependent on the chemical quality of the surface-water recharge. Ground-water discharge occurs along the Santa Clara River below Castaic Junction.\r\n\r\nWater will be imported to supplement the existing water resources. Acid water from abandoned coal mines in the vicinity of Morris Run and Blossburg, Pa., severely alter the aquatic environment of the Tioga River. From Morris Run to Crooked Creek, a reach of 19 miles, the river bed is influenced by a smothering blanket of heavy metal precipitates and highly acidic water. Biologically, this reach of the river is devoid of fishlife and nearly devoid of benthic macroinvertebrates. Downstream from Crooked Creek the water quality and biota are slowly restored. At Presho, N.Y., the river again supports an abundant and diversified population of fish and bottom-dwelling organisms.

In June 1972, tropical storm Agnes caused sever flooding in Pennsylvania and southern New York. The flood, on many major streams were the highest known since the river valleys were settled. Maximum discharges were as much as twice the discharge of a 50-year flood. In southern New York, large areas in Corning, Elmire, Wellsville, Salamanca, and in many smaller communities were inundated to depths of several feet. Levels of all of the Finger Lakes were higher than any previously recorded, and extensive flooding of lakeside properties resulted.

The extent of flooding shown on the map was delineated by the U.S. Geological Survey from earlier photography and limited field survey.

Hydrologic investigations of urban areas in Texas were begun by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1954. These studies are now in progress in Austin, Houston, Dallas, Dallas County, Fort Worth, San Antonio, and Bryan. To determine, on the basis of historical data and hydrologic analyses, the magnitude and frequency of floods. 2. To document and define the areal extent of floods of greater than ordinary magnitude. 3. To determine the effect of urban development on flood peaks and volume. 4. To provide applied research facilities for studies at Texas A & M University at College Stations. This report, the first in a series of reports to be published annually, is primarily applicable to objectives 2, 3, and 4. The report presents the basic hydrologic data collected in two study areas during the 1969 water year (October 1, 1968, to September 30, 1969) and basic hydrologic data collected during part of the 1968 water year (April 5, 1968, to September 30, 1968). The locations of the two basins within the study area, Burton Creek and Hudson Creek, are shown on figure 1.

From calculations of the sediment yields in \nother nearby drainage basins in Santa Clara County, it was determined \nthat 24 to 38 acre-feet of sediment would have been transported to \nWilliams Reservoir between 1961 and 1971 under natural conditions. The area comprises two main stream drainage areas: that of Gulmesh Mandeh (ephemeral stream) to the east which includes mostly plains with low hills on the east and north slopes and a high limestone scarp on the west slope; and Baghni Rud to the west which drains a mountainous area to the north and spreads onto a large alluvial fan with distributaries leading both to Helmand Rud to the southeast and Musa Qala Rud to the west. Most of the cultivated lands in the Zamin Dawar area lie in the southern part of the Gulmesh plains and in the Baghni alluvial fan, as well as a ribbon of cultivation on the flood plain of Baghni Rud in the mountains. The southern end of the Zamin Dawar area with high terraces and sharply incised ephemeral stream valleys is uninhabited. \r\n\r\nKarezes provide the chief source of water in the plains. Some 80 were examined and inventoried during the course of the present investigation. Several springs and one large-yield well also contribute to the water supply on the plains. In Baghni valley, developed springs provide the main source of water supply. \r\n\r\nDuring the present investigation, conducted in 1971,. it was found that the karezes yield a total of about 20,000 ac-ft (acre-feet) (25 million cu m (cubic meters)) of water The springs on the plains yield about 3,000 ac-ft (4 million cu m) per year, and the wells yield about 300 ac-ft (375,000 cu m) per year. The inventoried springs in Baghni valley yield about 6,500 ac-ft (8 million cu m) per year, and probably supply about 70 percent of the total water used in the valley. Therefore,the total amount of water used in the Zamin Dawar area in 1971 was about 32,000 ac-ft (40 million cu m). This amount of water was used to irrigate about i0,000 jiribs (approximately 5,000 acres or 2,000 hectares) of cultivated land and served a population of about 40,000 people. \r\n\r\nTwenty years ago the water supply was more than double the 1971 flow from karezes and springs, and the population of the area was probably 60,000 to 70,000 people. During the past 10 years and particularly during the last 3 years, the water table has been declining as a direct result of a dry-weather cycle which has affected much of Afghanistan. Concurrently, the population of the area has declined. Rainfall, based on data from the Kajakai Camp weather station, has declined from a 27-year annual average of about 200 mm (millimeters) to about 160 mm per year, which is the annual average for the last 5 years and equivalent to a reduction of approximately 70,000 ac-ft (88 million cu m) of precipitation per year over the entire area. An investigation was begun in 1965 by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Philadelphia District to meet the Corps’ need for information on sediment transport in the Delaware River basin in relation to the maintenance of navigable channels in the river 's estuarine areas.

\n

 Sediment records were needed by the Corps to identify the principal sources and amounts of suspended sediment transported by New Jersey tributary streams into these estuarine areas. In order to meet the project's objective, a daily sediment sampling program at streamflow- gaging stations on Crosswicks Creek, Cooper River, Maurice River, and Raccoon Creek was established.

\n

Because of protracted drought, which resulted in unusually low sediment discharges, the period of data collection at these daily stations was extended. Upon reviewing these records, three partial-record stations were established on the Pennsauken, Big Timber, and Mantua Creeks in 1970 to complete the areal coverage. Records at two additional stations, Delaware River at Trenton and McDonalds Branch in Lebanon State Forest, collected as part of other cooperative projects were available also for use in this study.

The purpose of this report is to summarize sediment data collected at selected stream-sampling sites in southern New Jersey. Computations of excepted average annual yields at each sampling site were made and utilized to estimate the annual yield at ungaged sites. Similar data currently are being compiled for streams draining Pennsylvania and Delaware. It is planned to report on the combined information at a later date in the Geological Survey's Water-Supply Paper series.

In June 1972, tropical storm Agnes caused sever flooding in Pennsylvania and southern New York. The flood, on many major streams were the highest known since the river valleys were settled. Maximum discharges were as much as twice the discharge of a 50-year flood. In southern New York, large areas in Corning, Elmire, Wellsville, Salamanca, and in many smaller communities were inundated to depths of several feet. Levels of all of the Finger Lakes were higher than any previously recorded, and extensive flooding of lakeside properties resulted.
