Frames were individually scaled for a best fit to the Transverse Mercator projection. Computer processing was performed by the Image Processing Laboratory (IPL) of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), California Institute of Technology. Processing included contrast enhancement and high-pass filtering which accentuates topographic features while subduing albedo variations. Recharge into the area is almost exclusively from precipitation in the San Bernardino and Little San Bernardino Mountains. About 500 acre-feet per year of recharge enters the western part of the area as underflow through Pipes Wash. Little direct recharge occurs as a result of precipitation directly on the unconsolidated deposits. \r\n\r\nPresently about 11,000 persons reside in the area and current gross pumpage is about 1,600 acre-feet annually. By the year 2000 the population is estimated to be 62,000 and annual gross pumpage is expected to be nearly 11,000 acre-feet. Although over 1,200,000 acre-feet of ground water are presently in storage, most of the population is centered in the southern part of the area around the towns of Yucca Valley and Joshua Tree. About 70 percent of the population resides in the vicinity of Yucca Valley and is supplied by ground water pumped from the Warren Valley basin. Of the 96,000 acre-feet of ground water in storage in that basin in 1969, about 80,000 acre-feet will be necessary to sustain projected growth there until 2000. Assuming negligible recharge and only about 50 percent recovery of the ground water in storage, if imported water from northern California is not available before about 1990, additional local supplies will have to be developed, possibly in the adjacent Pipes subbasin to the north. \r\n\r\nGround water in the southern part of the study area generally contains less than 250 mg/l (milligrams per liter) dissolved solids and 1.0 mg/l fluoride. A general degradation of ground-water quality occurs northward toward the dry lakes where the concentrations of dissolved solids and fluoride approach 2,000 and 5.0 mg/l, respectively. In Reche subbasin some isolated occurrences of fluoride exceeding 1.5 mg/l were noted. ,{"id":24047,"text":"ofr72269 - 1972 - Potential transport of sediment from Enloe Reservoir by the Similkameen and Okanogan rivers, Washington","interactions":[],"lastModifiedDate":"2015-03-13T17:31:03","indexId":"ofr72269","displayToPublicDate":"1994-01-01T00:00:00","publicationYear":"1972","noYear":false,"publicationType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"publicationSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"seriesTitle":{"id":330,"text":"Open-File Report","code":"OFR","onlineIssn":"2331-1258","printIssn":"0196-1497","active":true,"publicationSubtype":{"id":5}},"seriesNumber":"72-269","title":"Potential transport of sediment from Enloe Reservoir by the Similkameen and Okanogan rivers, Washington","docAbstract":"<p>This study was undertaken to determine the probable effects on the Similkameen and Okanogan Rivers of the removal, transport, and deposition of sediment now deposited behind Enloe Dam on the Similkameen River, if the dam were removed.</p>\n<p>Under existing conditions of sediment transport, the average annual suspended-sediment discharges at three streamflow-measuring sites are calculated to be 134,000 tons for the Similkameen River near Nighthawk, 175,000 tons for the Okanogan River near Tonasket, and 175,000 tons for the Okanogan River at Malott.</p>\n<p>The volume of sediment in Enloe Reservoir was computed&nbsp;to be 1.79 million cubic yards (about 2.4 million tons). The sediment is largely sand. If the dam were removed the maximum amount of reservoir sand transportable (in addition to normal sediment discharge), under stated conditions of velocity and depth during any average 10-year period, would range from about 17,000 to 580,000 cubic yards per year, with about 320,000 cubic yards being transported during a year of average water discharge. These volumes represent a range of 32 to less than 1 percent of the volume of sediment now deposited in the reservoir.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>The reservoir deposits not carried to the mouth of the Okanogan River (at Columbia River) would be deposited largely in a 17-mile reach of the Okanogon River immediately downstream from its confluence with the Similkameen River. Deposition of the reservoir sediment would tend to reduce the capacity of the channel of the Okanogan River in this reach; also there possibly would be some long-tern adjustments of the stream course to the temporary increase in the sediment load. Locally, the reduction in the channel cross section probably would increase the depth of the&nbsp;water and area of inundation during&nbsp;floods. The flood, on many major streams were the highest known since the river valleys were settled. Maximum discharges were as much as twice the discharge of a 50-year flood. In southern New York, large areas in Corning, Elmire, Wellsville, Salamanca, and in many smaller communities were inundated to depths of several feet. Snow cover, 150 percent of average, in the mountains on May 1 caused local snowmelt floods from mid-May to mid-July. The peak discharge of 265,000 cfs (cubic feet per second) on July 15 at Copper River near Chitina was the highest in 22 years of record.</p><p>However, the major flood period was August 8-11. Precipitation totals of 3 to 9 inches during August 5-11 were recorded in an area extending northeastward from Iliamna Lake to Palmer, Talkeetna, and Paxson Lake. The principal flood areas were the upper Copper, Matanuska, Susitna, Chakachatna, and Kvichak River basins. Flooding in the Anchorage area was not severe. Total damage caused by the August flood is estimated to be 8 to 10 million dollars of which 6 million dollars occurred in the Matanuska Valley.</p><p>Extreme floods occurred in the Matanuska Valley. A lake near Sutton on an unnamed tributary to Granite Creek breached its embankment, which released a peak discharge in Granite Creek on August 10 of 58,600 cfs, 23.4 times the probable 50-year flood. Other streams near Sutton, tributary to the Matanuska River, had peak discharges 1.8 to 8.9 times the probable 50-year flood. The Matanuska River at Palmer had a peak discharge of 82,100 cfs, 1.2 times the probable 50-year flood. Downstream near Bodenburg Butte, an area was inundated when the Matanuska River overtopped a dike. Another extreme flood occurred at the Chakachatna River near Tyonek on August 11 where the peak discharge was estimated to be 470,000 cfs. The peak was caused by lateral erosion of a channel constriction formed by Barrier Glacier at the outlet of Chakachamna Lake.</p><p>Hydrologic data for planning, discussions of antecedent conditions, and meteorology along with a description of the floods and flood damage are included. Tables of storm precipitation, peak discharge data, sediment data, and discharge for the June-August period are also included.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The area comprises two main stream drainage areas: that of Gulmesh Mandeh (ephemeral stream) to the east which includes mostly plains with low hills on the east and north slopes and a high limestone scarp on the west slope; and Baghni Rud to the west which drains a mountainous area to the north and spreads onto a large alluvial fan with distributaries leading both to Helmand Rud to the southeast and Musa Qala Rud to the west. Most of the cultivated lands in the Zamin Dawar area lie in the southern part of the Gulmesh plains and in the Baghni alluvial fan, as well as a ribbon of cultivation on the flood plain of Baghni Rud in the mountains. The southern end of the Zamin Dawar area with high terraces and sharply incised ephemeral stream valleys is uninhabited. \r\n\r\nKarezes provide the chief source of water in the plains. Some 80 were examined and inventoried during the course of the present investigation. Several springs and one large-yield well also contribute to the water supply on the plains. In Baghni valley, developed springs provide the main source of water supply. \r\n\r\nDuring the present investigation, conducted in 1971,. it was found that the karezes yield a total of about 20,000 ac-ft (acre-feet) (25 million cu m (cubic meters)) of water The springs on the plains yield about 3,000 ac-ft (4 million cu m) per year, and the wells yield about 300 ac-ft (375,000 cu m) per year. The inventoried springs in Baghni valley yield about 6,500 ac-ft (8 million cu m) per year, and probably supply about 70 percent of the total water used in the valley. Therefore,the total amount of water used in the Zamin Dawar area in 1971 was about 32,000 ac-ft (40 million cu m). This amount of water was used to irrigate about i0,000 jiribs (approximately 5,000 acres or 2,000 hectares) of cultivated land and served a population of about 40,000 people. \r\n\r\nTwenty years ago the water supply was more than double the 1971 flow from karezes and springs, and the population of the area was probably 60,000 to 70,000 people. During the past 10 years and particularly during the last 3 years, the water table has been declining as a direct result of a dry-weather cycle which has affected much of Afghanistan. Concurrently, the population of the area has declined. Rainfall, based on data from the Kajakai Camp weather station, has declined from a 27-year annual average of about 200 mm (millimeters) to about 160 mm per year, which is the annual average for the last 5 years and equivalent to a reduction of approximately 70,000 ac-ft (88 million cu m) of precipitation per year over the entire area.
