Surface-water studies were made to analyze long-term records of streamflow, basin and stream-channel characteristics, relations of rainfall and runoff , frequency of low flows and floods, interrelation of ground and surface water, and the effects of stream regulation on the quantity, quality, and availability of water supplies. Geohydrologic studies were made to determine the source, availability, quantity, and quality of water in the principal aquifers; evaluate long-range effects of irrigation, industrial, and municipal withdrawals; determine the potential for storage of liquid wastes; and prepare digital models for evaluating plans of aquifer development and management. Water-quality studies were made to define the physical, chemical, and biological character of surface and ground water; the origin transport, and character of solutes and sediment in streams; the areal and temporal changes in water quality; and the suitability of water for municipal, industrial and agricultural use.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Local, State, and Federal officials need data and information to evaluate, coordinate, and manage programs concerned with floods and flood losses. Because of a need to document stream discharges, elevations, and sediment concentrations, current-meter and indirect measurements were made at 34 gaging stations during or immediately after the floods. This report summarizes some of the hydrologic data collected. Peak discharges of record occurred at 20 gaging stations. Frequency of peak discharge equaled or exceeded the 100-year recurrence interval at 11 stations. The Federal Benchmark gaging station on the North Fork Whitewater River was destroyed. Five people died as a result of the floods, and property damages were estimated to exceed $114 million. The model, as described, applies specifically to the Skokomish, Nisqually, and Cowlitz Rivers, in Washington State, and more generally to streams in other regions that derive seasonal runoff from melting snow. Thus the techniques demonstrated for these three drainage basins can be used as a guide for applying this method to other streams. Input to the computer program consists of daily averages of gaged runoff of these streams, and daily values of precipitation collected at Longmire, Kid Valley, and Cushman Dam. Predictions are based on estimates of the absolute storage of water, predominately as snow: storage is approximately equal to basin precipitation less observed runoff. A pre-forecast test season is used to revise the storage estimate and improve the prediction accuracy. To obtain maximum prediction accuracy for operational applications with this model , a systematic evaluation of several hydrologic and meteorologic variables is first necessary. Six input options to the computer program that control prediction accuracy are developed and demonstrated. Predictions of streamflow can be made at any time and for any length of season, although accuracy is usually poor for early-season predictions (before December 1) or for short seasons (less than 15 days). The coefficient of prediction (CP), the chief measure of accuracy used in this manual, approaches zero during the late autumn and early winter seasons and reaches a maximum of about 0.85 during the spring snowmelt season. The data, in tabular and graphic form, consist of water-quality analyses of selected constituents and geohydrologic-site, water-treatment, and sewage-treatment data for 609 wells and 48 springs; water-quality analyses for 102 of the wells and 9 of the springs; water-quality analyses of streamflow from 34 sites; and specific conductance and water-temperature measurements of streamflow from 3 sites. State and local officials in Boulder County may find these data useful in planning for residential, commercial, and industrial development. The investigations spanned several years when precipitation was below normal in most of southern California.</p>\n<p>Surface-water records were collected for a 6-year period at 21 sites, and continuous precipitation records were obtained at four sites. Ground-water levels were tabulated from historical data at selected wells for 1941, 1968, and 1970. Water quality was monitored at several wells in the valley, and sediment data were collected at three surface-water gages. These investigations are now in progress in several major metropolitan areas including Austin, Dallas, Dallas County, Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio.</p><p>In October 1968, the Geological Survey, in cooperation with the city of Fort Worth, began a program of hydrologic investigations on several small streams in Fort Worth. The investigations are designed to evaluate factors affecting floods on small streams in the metropolitan area. Studies of additional streams were added to the program in October 1969. Seven geographic regions and 71 countries are represented. A few titles published prior to 1975 have been found that are not included in Bulletins 1263 or 1426. Only reports authored solely or in part by USGS members, or jointly by USGS and counterpart staff members, are listed.</p><p>The reports are listed alphabetically by author, under the appropriate country; reports of wider scope are given under the continent or geographic region, for example, Africa, Central and South America, or CENTO region. Reports not classifiable by geographic location are listed separately under the heading \"General.\" All references to reports on water resources and hydrology were provided by J. R. Jones or R. M. Beall, USGS.</p><p>The reports and maps are available only through the listed source. These declines are the result of pumping for the irrigation of alfalfa. The lowering of water levels has caused many shallow domestic wells to go dry. </p><p>Well yields in the valley generally are between 10 and 1,000 gallons per minute. About 240,000 acre-feet of ground water was extracted between 1950 and 1976. About 1,750,000 acre-feet remains in storage. </p><p>Water of poor quality underlies the valley around Lucerne Lake. There was no definable movement of this water from 1954 to 1976, but the possibility exists for future movement toward centers of pumping. </p><p>Lucerne Valley may be hydrologically suitable for artificial-recharge operations. Preliminary data suggest an area in T. 4 N., R. 1 E. as suitable for artificial recharge that would benefit most of the areas affected by the water-level declines. During a short visit to the headquarters of the Interstate Commission for the Araguaia-Tocantins Valley and to several stream-gaging stations in June 1964, the author reviewed the status of the streamflow and meteorological data-collection programs in relation to the streamflow and meteorological data-collection programs in relation to the pressing needs of development project studies. To provide data for areal and project-site studies and for main-stream sites, an initial network of 33 stream gaging stations was proposed, including the 7 stations then in operation. Suggestions were made in regard to operations, staffing and equipment. Organizational responsibilities for operations were found to be divided uncertainly. The Brazilian Meteorological Service had 15 synoptic stations in operation in and near the basin, some in need of reconditioning. Plans were at hand for the addition of 15 sites to the synoptic network and for limited data collection at 27 other sites. The author proposed collection of precipitation data at about 50 other locations to achieve a more representative areal distribution. Temperature, evaporation, and upper-air data sites were suggested to enhance the prospective hydrometeorological studies. The average annual streamflow through the area was less than 600 acre-feet (0.7 cubic hectometer), and the water carried little sediment except during floods which result from intense local storms. Most of the surface water seeps into the ground or is diverted for irrigation downstream from the study area.</p><p>Ground-water data were insufficient to define the potentiometric surface in most of the area. The water level in each of the three observation wells in the study area is above the coal layer in the immediate area of the well. A larger network of wells is needed to define the potentiometric surface throughout the area and to show its relation to surface water and the location of the coal layers.</p><p>The short period of this investigation coincided with a drought in southern Utah. Millions of acre-feet of water is pumped from the system annually to support a large and expanding agribusiness industry. Since the 1950's, water levels have been steadily declining in many areas of the valley and concern has been expressed about the ability of the entire ground-water system to support agribusiness at current levels, not to mention its ability to function at projected expansion levels. At current levels of ground-water use, an estimated 1.5 to 2 million acre-feet is withdrawn from storage each year; that is, 1.5 to 2 million acre-feet of water is pumped annually in excess of annual replenishment. The U.S. Geological Survey has initiated a 4-year study to develop geologic, hydrologic, and hydraulic information and to establish a valleywide ground-water data base that will be used to build computer models of the ground-water flow system. Subsequently, these models may be used to evaluate the system response to various ground-water management alternatives. This report describes current problems, objectives of the study, and outlines the general work to be accomplished in the study area. A bibliography of about 600 references is included. It will divert floodwater from the Hillsborough River at points upstream from Tampa through a canal system to McKay Bay. The U.S. Geological Survey began a hydrologic data program in 1974 to provide data needed to identify existing hydrologic conditions and to evaluate the effects of canal construction. A network of surface-water and ground-water sites was designed to monitor changes in nutrients, trace metals, major inorganic constituents, pesticides, and benthic invertebrates along the canal system; to monitor changes in trace elements, common constituents, nitrates, specific conductance, and chlorides in the Floridan aquifer; and to monitor changes in the potentiometric surface of the Floridan aquifer.</p><p>In 1974-75, the monitoring program consisted of drilling 12 monitor wells and initiation of the surface-water sampling program. In 1976, the program consisted of drilling five additional wells, continuation of the surface-water sampling, initiation of ground-water sampling program, and monitoring of discharge from springs.</p><p>Water-quality data for nine surface-water sites in the basin were collected at each of the control structure sites, in the tidal portion of the canal, and at each of the major tributaries to the canal system.</p><p>Fifteen ground-water sites were sampled annually to provide information on ground-water quality. Ten wells were sampled semiannually for dissolved chloride concentrations to provide information on the freshwater-saltwater interface. Ground-water levels were collected at 34 wells in the areas adjacent to the canal to monitor changes in the potentiometric surface in the Floridan aquifer.</p><p>Discharge measurements from springs along the canal system were made in 1969-73 and 1976 to provide data on the quantity of ground water entering the canal. This study will investigate the potential effects of large-scale surface mining of peat on the hydrology and water quality of Upper Red Lake and the Tamarac River. The major aspects of the study are the characterization of the surface-water and groundwater hydrology and water quality, including the trace-metal content of the peat. Data will be collected to construct two- and three-dimensional digital models to simulate the movement of ground water and its relation to surface water in the peatlands, streams, and lakes.
