Nitrogenous and carbonaceous oxygen consumption were separated by using an inhibitor of nitrification 1-allyl-2-thiourea. The comparison was conducted in the laboratory using samples collected from the water column. Nitrification accounted for 38 to 52 percent of the total oxygen consumption. Nitrifying bacteria were enumerated from the same reach of the river. The population of Nitrosomonas ranged from 10 to 1,000 per milliliter in the water column and 100 to 100,000 per gram of benthic sediment. The nitrobacter population ranged from 10 to 100 per milliliter in the water column and 100 to 1,000 per gram in the benthic sediment. The concentration of ammonium, nitrite, and nitrate as N was determined from water samples collected throughout the study reach. The average rate of ammonium disappearance and of nitrate appearance was 0.02 milligram per liter per hour of flow time. Organic materials associated with ore from the Texas coastal plain, Tertiary basins of Wyoming, Grants mineral belt of New Mexico, and the Uravan mineral belt of Utah and Colorado vary widely in physical appearance and chemical composition. Partial characterization of organic materials is achieved by chemical analyses to determine atomic hydrogen-to-carbon (H/C) ratios and by gas chromatographic analyses to determine the molecular fragments evolved during stepwise pyrolysis. \r\n\r\nFrom the pyrolysis experiments the organic materials can be classified and grouped: (a) lignites from Texas and Wyoming and (b) hydrogen poor materials, from Grants and Uravan mineral belts and Wyoming; (c) naphthalene-containing materials from Grants mineral belt and Wyoming; and (d) complex and aromatic materials from Uravan, Grants and Wyoming. \r\n\r\nThe organic materials analyzed have atomic H/C ratios that range from approximately 0.3 to at least 1.5. The samples with higher H/C ratios yield pyrolysis products that contain as many as 30 carbon atoms per molecule. The inflow and outflow discharges of the probable maximum flood were computed to be 23,600 and 23,100 cubic feet per second, respectively, and of the standard project flood, 9,400 and 8,800 cubic feet per second, respectively. A rating curve computed for the dam spillway indicates that water-surface elevations produced at the dam by runoff from both the standard project flood and the maximum probable flood would be above the top of the spillway abutments. The 10- and 100-year peak discharges at the Butternut Creek gaging station were computed by the HEC-1 program of the Corps of Engineers to be 2 ,160 and 3,450 cubic feet, respectively, as compared to 1,680 and 2,810 cubic feet per second computed by a log-Pearson type III analysis of the station data. The HEC-1 values are within the 5- and 95-percent confidence limits of the log-Pearson type III values. The location of the headwater of each is given with reference to cultural and topographic features. ' Headwater ' in this report is defined as the first site downstream from which the average streamflow is 5 cubic feet per second. The site locations were determined from drainage areas as indicated on topographic maps. The size of the drainage area required to produce an average flow of 5 cubic feet per second was determined from equations, developed separately for each State by regression techniques, that define the relation between streamflow and hydrologic factors of the region. Drainage area and precipitation were factors in the equations for all three States: forest cover was found to be significant in Ohio. Sedimentary rocks beneath this area range in age from Cambrian to Holocene and attain a maximum thickness of about 12,000 feet. Rocks exposed in the study area range in age from Late Cretaceous to Holocene.</p><p>Water for domestic, stock, and public use in the southern Powder River area is available from the Fox Hills-lower Hell Creek aquifer and the upper part of the Hell Creek Formation, both of Late Cretaceous age, and the Fort Union Formation of Paleocene age. Water for industrial use might be available from the Madison Group of Mississippian age. Where adequate quantities are available, water from the Madison Group is suitable for irrigation. Water from alluvium of Holocene and Pleistocene age along the Powder River is marginally suitable for irrigation, and surface water from the Powder River is suitable for irrigation, except during periods of low flow.</p><p>The Madison Group is a sequence of carbonate rocks that underlies the entire study area and ranges in thickness from 800 to 1,500 feet. Depth to the top of the group is about 4,000 feet in the southeastern part of the area and as much as 9,000 feet in the southwestern part. Water-supply wells at the Bell Creek oil field in the southeastern part of the study area flow as much as 1,300 gal/min (gallons per minute). Oil-field water from this area contains calcium, magnesium, and sulfate as major ions, and contains less than 1,000 mg/L (milligrams per liter) dissolved solids.</p><p>The Fox Hills-lower Hell Creek aquifer is predominantly sandstone interbedded in part with sandy shale and siltstone. The aquifer crops out in the eastern part of the study area and dips generally westward beneath the land surface at about 40 to 200 feet per mile. Wells in the Fox Hills-lower Hell Creek aquifer range in depth from 25 feet in the outcrop area to 1,358 feet between the Powder and Little Powder Rivers. Measured well yields range from 3 to 200 gal/min. Many flowing wells along the principal rivers yield as much as 20 gal/min. The water contains calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonate or sulfate as major ions in the outcrop area. Downgradient, sodium and bicarbonate are predominant. The dissolved-solids concentration ranges from 261 to 2,230 mg/L.</p><p>The upper part of the Hell Creek Formation consists of interbedded shale, siltstone, claystone, and sandstone. Wells in the upper part of the Hell Creek are as deep as 1,045 feet. Flowing wells along the Powder and Little Powder Rivers yield as much as 40 gal/min, but pumped wells generally yield less. The water quality is similar to that of the Fox Hills-lower Hell Creek aquifer. The dissolved-solids concentration ranges from 236 to 1,580 mg/L.</p><p>The Fort Union Formation consists of interbedded sandstone, siltstone, shale, and coal. The formation crops out in the western three-fourths of the study area and is about 2,100 feet thick in the southwestern part. Wells tapping this unit range in depth from 120 to 1,100 feet. Wells and springs are reported to yield as much as 20 gal/min; many wells flow. The upper part of the formation is a major aquifer west of the Powder River valley. The water contains calcium, magnesium, sodium, bicarbonate, and sulfate as the major ions in most any relative proportion. The dissolved-solids concentration ranges from 541 to 2,160 mg/L.</p><p>Alluvium is unconsolidated deposits of interbedded clay, silt, sand, and gravel, mostly along the river valleys. Maximum measured thicknesses of these deposits were 62 and 55 feet along the Powder and Little Powder Rivers, respectively. Several irrigation wells drilled in the alluvium along the Powder River have reported yields of as much as 900 gal/min. Water contains calcium, magnesium, and sulfate as major ions. The dissolved-solids concentration of two water samples from the Powder River valley was 1,780 and 2,240 mg/L.</p><p>The only perennial streams are the Powder and Little Powder Rivers. Based on available streamflow records, the mean-annual discharge of the Powder River at Moorhead, in the southwestern part of the area, is 448 cubic feet per second; discharge varies from 0 to 23,000 cubic feet per second. Mean-annual discharge of the Little Powder River near Broadus, in the north-central part of the area, is 31 cubic feet per second; discharge varies from 0 to 2,440 cubic feet per second. Water from the Powder River normally contains calcium and sulfate as the major ions. Also included are descriptions of Cretaceous and/or Tertiary lavas of the Yemen Volcanics, Miocene(?) alkali granite, Pliocene caprock of the Guma salt dome, and late Pleistocene and Holocene basalts of the Aden Volcanic Series (?). The petrographic studies permitted the selection of 11 samples of rock for future use in obtaining isotopic analyses for age determinations. Analyses of these rock specimens for trace amounts of gold, indium, mercury, selenium, and thallium completed the geochemical studies. Results of these analyses are interpreted to show that regional geochemical exploration should be undertaken for base and precious metals near Jibal Hufash, the Manakhah area, the region around Al Bayda, the Sa'dah-Majadh area, and the Wadi Jawf area. Samples were collected from the Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet area; Mississippi River, South Pass; Baptiste Collette Bayou; Tiger Pass area; Bayou Long; Bayou Barataria and Barataria Bay Waterway area; Barataria Bay Waterway area (gulf section); Bayou Segnette Waterway; Lake Pontchartrain near Tangipahoa River mouth; Bayou Grand Caillou; Bayou la Carpe at Houma; Houma Navigation Canal and Terrebonne Bay; Bayou Boeuf, Bayou Chene, and Bayou Black; Atchafalaya River channel, Atchafalaya Bay; Old River Lock tailbay; Red River below mouth of Black River; Freshwater Canal; Mermentau River and Lake Arthur; Mermentau River outlet; and Calcasieu Ship Channel. The studies were initiated at the request of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to evaluate possible environmental effects of proposed dredging activities in those waterways.</p><p>The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Geological Survey collected 189 samples of native water and 172 samples of bottom (bed) material from 163 different sites. A total of 117 elutriates (mixtures of native water and bottom material) were prepared. The native water and elutriate samples were analyzed for selected metals, pesticides, nutrients, organics, and physical constituents. Of 25 test wells, 8 produced between 50 and 116 gallons per minute. The Gatlinburg area, located on the northern flank of the Great Smoky Mountains , is underlain by fractured, variably metamorphosed, sedimentary rocks. The most effective criteria for choosing well sites were valley areas with 7 percent or less land slope, presence of fracture traces, and deep overburden. Mapped faults were not a good indicator of ground-water occurrence. The largest amounts of ground water occur in irregularly shaped zones of deep and intense weathering in the rocks underlying broad, fracture-controlled valleys. Permeable zones along fractures at depths of 170 feet or less supply most of the water.
