Every effort has been made in this study to evaluate the probable occurrence, quantity, and quality of the coal deposits in southeastern Massachusetts but unfortunately it is impossible from surface observations alone to ascertain adequately the coal resources of this area. Only by means of widespread and systematic underground exploration, accomplished best by core drilling, can the coal resources be determined. All the available data concerning the coal resources is analyzed in this report in order to indicate the feasibility of such an exploration program and where it is most likely to be Multiple-regression equations relating peak discharge magnitude and frequency to climatic and physical characteristics of 260 gaged basins were determined in order to estimate average recurrence interval of floods at ungaged sites. These equations are for 1.25-, 2-, 5-, 10-, 25-, and 50-year average recurrence intervals. In this report, Alaska was divided into two regions, one having a maritime climate with fall and winter rains and floods, the other having spring and summer floods of a variety or combinations of causes. Average standard errors of the six multiple-regression equations for these two regions were 48 and 74 percent, respectively. Maximum recorded floods at more than 400 sites throughout Alaska are tabulated. Maps showing lines of equal intensity of the principal climatic variables found to be significant (mean annual precipitation and mean minimum January temperature), and location of the 260 sites used in the multiple-regression analyses are included. Little flood data have been collected in western and arctic Alaska, and the predictive equations are therefore less reliable for those areas. The low-flow characteristics are the annual minimum 7-day mean flow below which the flow will fall on the average of once in 2 years (Q<sub>7,2</sub>) and the annual minimum 7-day mean flow below which the flow will fall on the average of once in 10 years (Q<sub>7, 10</sub>).</p><p>The low-flow characteristics at most sewage-treatment and industrial plants (project stations) were determined by correlating base-flow measurements at the project stations with the concurrent daily mean flow at continuous-record gaging stations in the area. The Q<sub>7, 2</sub> and Q<sub>7,10</sub> discharges determined by a frequency analysis at the continuous-record gaging stations were used to estimate the Q<sub>7,2</sub> and Q<sub>7,10</sub> at the project stations. For some project stations the low-flow characteristics also were determined by frequency analysis at nearby continuous-record gaging stations or correlation analysis at nearby low-flow partial-record stations. The Q<sub>7, 2</sub> values ranged from 0 to 3,770 ft<sup>3</sup>/s and Q<sub>7, 10</sub> values ranged from 2,790 ft<sup>3</sup>/s.</p><p>The accuracy of the estimated low-flow characteristics is evaluated according to the type and amount of data used to determine the low-flow characteristics. The accuracy determined by the standard error of estimate for the 10-year low flow (SE<sub>7, 10</sub>)) ranged from an average of 18 percent at continuous-record gaging stations to an average of h6 For the equation Q = aWAb, where Q is mean discharge and WA is active-channel width, it is proposed that the exponent, b, should be of fixed value for most natural, perennial, alluvial stream channels and that the coefficient, a, varies with the characteristics of the bed and bank material.</p><p>Three groups of perennial stream channels with differing characteristics were selected for study using consistent procedures of data collection. A common feature of the groups was general channel stability, that is, absence of excessive widening by erosive discharges. Group 1 consisted of 32 channels of gradient exceeding 0.0080, low suspended-sediment discharge, high channel roughness, and low discharge variability. Group 2 consisted of 13 streams in Kansas having at least 70 percent silt and clay in the bed material and having similar discharge variability, climate, gradient, and riparian vegetation. Group 3, in southern Missouri, consisted of discharge channels of 18 springs having similar conditions of very low discharge variability, climate and vegetation, but variable bed and bank material. Values for the exponent for the three groups of data are 1.98, 1.97, and 1.97, respectively, whereas values of the coefficients are 0.017, 0.042, and 0.011 when discharge is expressed in cubic meters per second and width is in meters. The relation for high-gradient channels (group 1) is supported by published data from laboratory flumes.</p><p>The similarity of the three values of the exponent demonstrates that a standard exponent of 2.0, significant to two figures, is reasonable for the width-mean discharge relation of perennial, alluvial stream channels, and that the exponent is independent of other variables. Past mineral production has been limited to gold from the Yentna district, but the quadrangle contains potentially significant resources of tin and silver and possibly a few other commodities including chromite and copper. The results of the mineral resource assessment are given in a folio of maps which are accompanied by descriptive texts, diagrams, tables, and pertinent references. This Circular provides background information on these investigations and integrates the component maps. Pumping rates in the valley are expected to increase from 24,000 acre-feet per year in 1968 to an ultimate rate of 38,500 acre-feet per year. The model was calibrated for the period 1940-51 and tested by simulating water-level changes from 1951 to 1968. Model-generated water levels were generally within 15 feet of observed water levels for the calibration period. For the testing period, computed and observed water levels differed by as much as 35 feet in parts of the study area. Discrepancies in the test results may be caused by errors in historical pumpage data or by unidentified faults or local semiconfined conditions. Under one proposed development scheme, model-predicted water levels to the year 2020 declined up to 170 feet in previously undeveloped areas. For developed areas near the city of Hollister, water-level declines of 100 to 125 feet were predicted for the same period. The Fort Union conformably overlies the Cretaceous Lance Formation, which is marine in its lower units and nonmarine in its upper part. \r\n\r\nThe formations dip steeply along the western margin of the study area and are nearly horizontal in the central and eastern portions. Simulated water-resources use in the basin included private development of ground water for irrigation, Federal development of surface-water systems for irrigation, and development of ground water to supply municipal demands of Lincoln and Omaha.</p><p>Simulated future conditions indicate that significant permanent declines in ground-water levels and streamflows may occur as a result of private development of ground water for irrigation. The largest simulated declines in ground-water levels were more than 80 feet by the year 2020 in upland areas in the Elkhorn and Middle Platte subbasins under conditions of rapid development of all irrigable lands. Simulated depletion of perennial streamflows by ground-water withdrawals indicated that future surface-water supplies may be limited in parts of the basin. Simulated depletions to major streams exceeded 60 percent of average perennial flow in the Elkhorn subbasin under conditions of rapid private development of ground water for irrigation.</p><p>Simulations that evaluated the effects of combined private groundwater development with proposed Federal development of surface water for irrigation showed that in the project areas, ground-water level declines were reduced compared to \"without project\" conditions. In some project areas, simulated ground-water levels rose with the application of surface water in excess of consumptive-use requirements and soil-moisture storage capacities.
