River Basin, Texas, 1970","docAbstract":"The U.S. Soil Conservation Service is actively engaged in the installation of flood- and soil-erosion reducing measures in Texas under the authority of \"The Flood Control Act of 1936 and 1944\" and \"Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Act\" (Public Law 566), as amended. The Soil Conservation Service has found a total of approximately 3,500 floodwater-retarding structures to be physically and economically feasible in Texas. As of September 30, 1970, 1,439 of these structures had been built.
This watershed-development program will have varying but important effects on the natural surface- and ground-water resources of river basins, especially where a large number of the floodwater-retarding structures are built. Basic hydrologic data under natural and developed conditions are needed to appraise the effects of the structures on the yield and mode of occurrence of runoff.
Hydrologic investigations of these small watershed study areas were begun by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1951 and are now being made in 12 areas (fig. 1). These investigations are being made in cooperation with the Texas Water Development Board, the Soil Conservation Service, the San Antonio River Authority, the city of Dallas, and the Tarrant County Water Control and Improvement District No. 1. The 12 study areas were chosen to sample watersheds having different rainfall, topography, geology, and soils. In five of the study areas (North, Little Elm, Mukewater, Little Pond-North Elm, and Pin Oak Creeks), streamflow and rainfall records were collected prior to construction of the floodwater-retarding structures, thus affording the opportunity for analyses of the conditions 'before and after\" development. Structures have now been built in four of these study areas. A summary of the development of the floodwater-retarding structures in each study area as of September 30, 1970, is shown in table 1.

Internataional Decade of Ocean Exploration (IDOE), the United states Geological Survey is participating in an investigation of the geologic framework and resource potential of continental margins and small ocean basins in the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and west African continental shelf areas. These studies are funded through the National Science Foundation. Legs 1 and 2, completed June 22 and July 8, respectively, were concerned with subbottom features of the Bay of Campeche and with the tectonic framework of the continental margin east of the Yucatan Peninsula. Leg 3, described in this report was conducted in the Antilles region of the northeastern Caribbean between July 17 and August 4, 1971.
This report presents the unedited records of the approximately 5840 km of acoustic reflection profiling made during Leg 3. Magnetic and gravity data were collected also but are being reported elsewhere in conjunction with the results of the study.

These studies are funded through the National Science Foundation. Acoustic-reflection profiles of Leg 1, described in this report concern mainly a 200 X 250 kilometer project area in the Bay of Campeche in the southwestern part of the Gulf of Mexico. The cruise leg began at Corpus Christi, Texas, and ended at Veracruz, Mexico. Other geophysical records collected during the cruise include magnetometry, gravimetry, and bathymetry.
Visiting scientists from the Institute of Geophysics of the National University of Mexico, the Oceanographic Commission of the Mexican Navy, and the Mexican Institute of Petroleum joined the research vessel UNITEDGEO I throughout the cruise in the Bay of Campeche. The cruise offered an excellent opportunity for scientific interchange between investigators from Mexico and the United States and permitted collaboration in the instrumentation, operational techniques, and interpretation of acoustic-reflection records aboard the research vessel.

The morphology and ultrastructure of three North American salmonid pathogens, Oregon sockeye salmon, chinook salmon and infectious hematopoietic necrosis viruses, were examined by thin sectioning and negative staining after growth in fathead minnow cells at 10 ° C. The viruses matured at the plasma membrane of these cells. They were approximately 170 nm in length, 70 nm in width and had internal striations with a periodicity of 5.5nm. They were rounded on one end and planar on the other (i.e., bullet shaped). By morphological criteria, these viruses are rhabdoviruses with dimensions and ultrastructural features similar to vesicular stomatitis virus.

We studied the ceca of normal adult rats by light and electron microscopy to determine whether any specific bacterial population localizes in this area. All rats studied showed that the crypt was packed with organisms whose morphological character differs from those of the cecal lumen. Organisms localized in the crypt were often identified topographically close to the microvilli of the epithelial cells. These organisms could be differentiated into three types according to their characteristic ultrastructure. Type 1 was a thin spiral-shaped microbe that resembled a Borrelia. Type 2 possessed helically coiled fibers and flagella-like appendages. Type 3 was spiral-shaped but lacked axial fibers. Types 1 and 2 were both capable of penetrating through the crypt epithelium into the lamina propria where they were found in either phagocytes or extracellular locations. These observations are discussed in relation to other host-microflora localization patterns.
This paper describes a method using elevated levels of penicillin, streptomycin, and nystatin instead of filters to control bacteria and mold contaminants in specimens processed for virus isolation. Filters were shown to significantly reduce the virus concentration. Virus and tissue cultures were not affected by this procedure. In field tests nearly three times more specimens were positive for virus with this method than with the widely used filter technique. Moreover, the cost of materials was less. This method is recommended for inspection and certification purposes.

The ultimate consequence has been a reduction of fishery productivity that has ranged from extreme in Lake Ontario to moderate in Lake Superior. If measures are not taken to alleviate the adverse effects of marine invaders and trends in environmental quality, a major reduction in fishery productivity can eventually be expected throughout the Great Lakes.Prospects for the next century will be improved if the lakes can be intensively managed. More stringent control of the sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus), and subsequent reduction of the alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus), by the reestablishment of populations of large piscivores, should permit the recovery of some of the previous predator and prey species, or the development of populations of new species that are more compatible with a reduced number of lampreys. Even if marine species can be reduced greatly, the full restoration of the former fishery productivity remains uncertain and will require a high degree of coordination among all management and research agencies that have responsibilities on the Great Lakes.Unfavorable trends toward progressive degradation of water quality pose the greatest threat to restoration of the fishery resources of the Great Lakes. Where changes in water quality have been the greatest, oligotrophic species have become scarce or absent, and in the deepwater regions no other species have reoccupied the vacated niches.

In 1967 they were decimated by a lakewide mass mortality, and have since been less abundant as \"adults\" (≥120 mm long), although numerous young were produced in 1967–70 and the adult population appeared to be gradually increasing. Alewives were studied intensively during 1962–70 on the basis of collections made primarily with bottom trawls. Principal considerations in the population study include effects of seasonal changes in distribution on length composition of young and adults, sex and maturity in relation to size and age at recruitment into adult stocks, and changes in age, growth, condition, and population structure that accompanied the drastic changes in abundance.A substantial increase in the age of adults in the bottom stocks and on the spawning grounds was among the important population changes after the 1967 die-off. Growth of older adults also increased appreciably immediately after the die-off, and a sharp increase in average weight (16–26%) over a standard range of lengths was maintained in 1968–70. Selective depletion of zooplankton by alewives was evidence that overabundance decreased the food supply, depressed growth, and caused the poor condition that made alewives vulnerable to excessive mortality in 1967. Although poor condition in fall undoubtedly increased winter and spring mortality in the mid-1960s, alewives apparently were stressed by below-average temperature in the winter of 1969–70, and experienced a light die-off through May 1970 despite their good condition and relatively low population density the preceding fall.The population upsurge that preceded the 1967 die-off was reflected by a fivefold increase of adults in the fall index catch (in trawls) from 1962 to 1965 and 1966. The index catch then dropped 70% in fall 1967. Mortality among the 1960–64 year-classes, as represented by annual losses from age III to age IV in the index catch during 1964–68, ranged from 40% in 1965 to 89% in 1967, and averaged 68%. Assessment of mortality from the index catches was difficult because the age of alewives at full recruitment into bottom stocks increased from III in the mid-1960s to IV or older in 1968–70, when alewives remained longer at midlevels, possibly because of a delay in sexual maturity. Annual mortality after the fifth year of life, on the basis of average percentage age composition of the trawl catches in 1964–70, was tentatively estimated as 79–80%. The number of alewives recruited to the adult population from the 1962–67 year-classes over several ages in the fall index catch was inversely related to the abundance of their parents in the fall immediately preceding the year in which each year-class was spawned. Annual commercial production in the 1960s (peak in 1967, 42 million lb) may not have exceeded 7.7–18.6% of the bottom stocks, on the basis of the estimated weights of alewives available to trawls in the spring of 1964 and 1969. Yield per recruitment to the commercial fishery was low because of slow growth and high natural mortality.

Carp and white suckers required shorter exposures to antimycin (6 hr) than to rotenone (18–24 hr) at field-use concentrations of 5 and 50 ppb respectively. Bullheads were killed by 3–10 hr exposure to 100–250 ppb rotenone at 17 C or higher. However, the long exposure time necessary in colder water (25 hr at 100 ppb in 12 C water) made elimination of bullheads with rotenone difficult in cold seasons. Exposure time was influenced more by water temperature than by the toxicant concentration. The effects of rotenone were often reversible even after fish had been on their sides in the toxicant solution for 4–5 hr but irreversible for antimycin after fish showed the first signs of distress.

In the summer of 1959 most walleyes of the year-class were in water 10 to 20 feet deep along the south and west shores of the western basin. By fall they averaged about 10 inches long and were rather widely distributed throughout the basin. By September 1960 most had reached legal length (then 13 inches in Ohio), and in October they made up nearly the entire commercial walleye production and made the highest monthly contribution during the life of the year-class. Walleyes of the 1959 year-class were cropped intensively and remained in the fishery for only a relatively short time. Estimated Ohio trap net production of the year-class was 261,000 fish in 1960, 168,000 in 1961, and 21,000 in 1962. Few fish survived beyond the spring of 1962. About 97% of the females of the year-class were caught before they had spawned once.
