Meanwhile, there are indications that the earlier estimates of around ten thousand million barrels should be raised—perhaps to about five times as much. There has moreover been a great increate also in the known and probable gas reserves in northern Canada—particularly in the Arctic Archipelago. In spite of planned automation, people will be needed for development—including Eskimos and Indians, whose interests will be widely protected under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of December 1971. The International Biological Programme ‘Tundra Biome’ projects have accumulated much new information, including the results to be expected from disturbing the tundra seriously, and means of preventing or repairing damage to it. There is much interest in Alaska and Canada in protection of the northern environment, and in the former the US National Environmental Policy Act is already leading to stricter control of some developments.

","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0006-3207(72)90054-7","issn":"00063207","usgsCitation":"Reed, J., 1972, Oil development and conservation in Arctic America: Biological Conservation, v. 4, no. 5, p. 369-371, https://doi.org/10.1016/0006-3207(72)90054-7.","productDescription":"3 p.","startPage":"369","endPage":"371","numberOfPages":"3","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":219117,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"4","issue":"5","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a6cf3e4b0c8380cd74eb8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Reed, J. For passive spreading, it is likely that the ridges and transforms adjust to a configuration offering minimum resistance to plate separation. This leads to a simple geometric model which yields conditions for the occurrence of transform faults and an aid to interpretation of structural patterns in the sea floor. Under reasonable assumptions, it is much more difficult for diverging plates to spread a kilometer of ridge than to slip a kilometer of transform fault, and the patterns observed at spreading centers might extend to lithospheric depths. Under these conditions, the resisting force at spreading centers could play a significant role in the dynamics of plate-tectonic systems.

","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0012-821X(72)90051-9","issn":"0012821X","usgsCitation":"Lachenbruch, A., and Thompson, G.A., 1972, Oceanic ridges and transform faults: Their intersection angles and resistance to plate motion: Earth and Planetary Science Letters, v. 15, no. 2, p. 116-122, https://doi.org/10.1016/0012-821X(72)90051-9.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"116","endPage":"122","numberOfPages":"7","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":219000,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"15","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a6c9be4b0c8380cd74cfd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lachenbruch, A.H.","contributorId":76737,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lachenbruch","given":"A.H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":358315,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Thompson, G. The results are those from \"mass-movement lines\", which consist of a series of pins or iron rods, 10 inches (25 cm) long driven vertically into the ground along a straight line-of-sight, secured at each end with stiff iron posts. Microearthquakes are few and scattered in zones where elastic energy is being stored. Changes in the rate of strain, as recorded by tiltmeter arrays, have been observed before several earthquakes of about magnitude 4. Changes in fluid pressure may control timing of seismic activity and make it possible to control natural earthquakes by controlling variations in fluid pressure in fault zones. An experiment in earthquake control is underway at the Rangely oil field in Colorado, where the rates of fluid injection and withdrawal in experimental wells are being controlled.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0040-1951(72)90080-7","issn":"00401951","usgsCitation":"Healy, J.H., Lee, W., Pakiser, L.C., Raleigh, C., and Wood, M., 1972, Prospects for earthquake prediction and control: Tectonophysics, v. 14, no. 3-4, p. 319-332, https://doi.org/10.1016/0040-1951(72)90080-7.","productDescription":"14 p.","startPage":"319","endPage":"332","numberOfPages":"14","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":219297,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"San Andreas Fault","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -122.29980468749999,\n 35.06597313798418\n ],\n [\n -117.24609374999999,\n 35.06597313798418\n ],\n [\n -117.24609374999999,\n 42.13082130188811\n ],\n [\n -122.29980468749999,\n 42.13082130188811\n ],\n [\n -122.29980468749999,\n 35.06597313798418\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"14","issue":"3-4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a8f57e4b0c8380cd7f6e6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Healy, J. The sonde is 7.3 cm in diameter and about 2.2 m in length and weighs about 16 kg. The lithium-compensated germanium semiconductor detector is stabilized at −185 to −188°C for as much as ten hours by a cryostatic reservoir containing melting propane. During periods when the sonde is not in use the propane is kept frozen by a gravity-fed trickle of liquid nitrogen from a reservoir temporarily attached to the cryostat section. A 252Cf source, shielded from the detector, may be placed in the bottom section of the sonde for anlysis by measurement of neutron-activation or neutron-capture gamma rays. Electron microprobe analyses (104) of spinels and their associated phases include 58 of pleonaste which show Mg/(Mg + Fe) 0.44–0.62 and Cr/(Cr + Al) 0.017–0.134 (atomic), plus minor amounts of other ions, and differ greatly from almost all previously recorded lunar spinels; almost no spinels of intermediate composition were found. Two types of compositional zoning exist: a diffuse primary one with cores lower in Ti, and a narrow secondary one from reaction with matrix yielding rims higher in Cr, Ti, and Mn. At contacts with breccia matrix there is a narrow corona of almost pure plagioclase (An80-An94), free of opaque minerals and pyroxene. Two types of solid inclusions found in the pleonaste are calcic plagioclase, and tiny spherical masses of nickel-rich sulfide.

Similar pleonaste occurs in crystalline rock clasts, mainly with plagioclase; one clast (A) consists only of coarse olivine, plagioclase, and pleonaste, with granulated grain boundaries suggestive of deformation. From composition and texture, this clast is one possible candidate for the mafic cumulate counterpart of the “anorthositic” crust. Another clast (B), also made solely of olivine, plagioclase and pleonaste, is itself a breccia. These data suggest a two-stage brecciation process: 1) disruption (probably pre-Imbrian) of a deep-seated pleonaste-bearing source rock like A and reconsolidation to form a breccia without addition of pyroxene, ilmenite or other minerals; and 2) disruption of this breccia to yield breccia clast B which was then incorporated into the Fra Mauro formation.

","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0012-821X(72)90038-6","issn":"0012821X","usgsCitation":"Roedder, E., and Weiblen, P., 1972, Occurrence of chromian, hercynitic spinel (\"pleonaste\") in Apollo-14 samples and its petrologic implications: Earth and Planetary Science Letters, v. 15, no. 4, p. 376-402, https://doi.org/10.1016/0012-821X(72)90038-6.","productDescription":"27 p.","startPage":"376","endPage":"402","numberOfPages":"27","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":219216,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"15","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a6bd8e4b0c8380cd7490b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Roedder, E.","contributorId":100986,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Roedder","given":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":358100,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Weiblen, P.W.","contributorId":31884,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Weiblen","given":"P.W.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":358099,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Major contributing factors have been intensive selective fisheries, extreme modification of the drainage, invasion of marine species, and progressive physical–chemical changes of the lake environments. Lake Ontario was the first to be affected as its basin was settled and industrialized earliest, and it was the first to be connected by canals to the mid-Atlantic where the alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus) and sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) which ultimately became established in the Great Lakes were abundant. Oligotrophic fish communities were successively disrupted in Lakes Erie, Huron, Michigan, and Superior as the affects of population growth, industrialization, and marine invaders spread upward in the Laurentian drainage.The degree and sequence of response of families offish and species within families differed for each factor, but the sequence of change among families and species has been the same in response to each factor as it affected various lakes at different times. The ultimate result of the disruption of fish communities has been a reduction of productivity of oligotrophic species that ranges from extreme in Lake Ontario to moderate in Lake Superior, and which has reached a state of instability and rapid change in the upper three Great Lakes by the rnid-1900s similar to the situation in Lake Ontario in the mid-1800s. Since oligotrophic species (primarily salmonines, coregonines, and deepwater cottids) are the only kinds of fish that fully occupied the entire volume of the deepwater Great Lakes (Ontario, Huron, Michigan, and Superior), the fish biomass of these lakes has been reduced as various species declined or disappeared. In Lake Erie, which is shallow, and in the shallow bays of the deep lakes, oligotrophic species were replaced by mesotrophic species, primarily percids, which have successively increased and declined. All oligotrophic species are greatly reduced or extinct in lakes Ontario and Erie, and are in various stages of decline in lakes Huron, Michigan, and Superior, from greatest to least, respectively. The percids appear to be near the end of their sequence of succession in lakes Erie, Ontario, and Huron (primarily Saginaw Bay) where only the yellow perch (Perca flavescens) remains abundant. The yellow perch appears to be on the brink of decline in Lake Erie, which has been more severely influenced by water quality change than the other lakes.
","language":"English","publisher":"NRC Research Press","doi":"10.1139/f72-117","usgsCitation":"Smith, S.H., 1972, Factors of ecologic succession in oligotrophic fish communities of the Laurentian Great Lakes: Journal of the Fisheries Research Board of Canada, v. 29, no. 6, p. 717-730, https://doi.org/10.1139/f72-117.","productDescription":"14 p.","startPage":"717","endPage":"730","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":133372,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"29","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49ffe4b07f02db5f7a50","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Smith, Stanford H.","contributorId":86711,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Smith","given":"Stanford","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308489,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
