Data were collected at 9 springs, 9 lakes and 22 stream sites.</p><p>Using slope-conveyance methods based on field evidence, estimates of bankfull and maximum evident flood-peak discharges were made for 20 selected streams. Maximum evident flood peak discharges ranged from 7.0 to 80.8 (ft3/s )/mi2 and averaged 30.1 (ft<sup>3</sup>/s)/mi<sup>2</sup>. These estimates bore no obvious relation to either drainage basin physiography or climatalogical characteristics. Both the bankfull and maximum evident flood-peak discharges were generally less than the 50-year flood and greater than the 2-year flood estimates made using regression relations developed from Alaska stream gaging records and drainage basin characteristics.</p><p>Springs were found only in the foothills of the Brooks Range. Their discharge ranged from 1.42 ft<sup>3</sup>/s at the Eli River spring to 13.0 ft<sup>3</sup>/s at North Fork Squirrel River spring. Water temperatures of springs sampled ranged from 0.00C at the Omikviorok spring to 3.50C at the Kavrorak Springs near Kivalina. The nine springs were found by noting the locations of the associated icings on Landsat imagery of the previous year.</p><p>Eleven stream sites were sampled under winter conditions; all were on the Arctic Slope. No winter streamflow was found at any of the streams. It appears that the streamflow on the Arctic Slope ceases in late winter except for limited local zones of ground-water discharge that form icings.</p><p>Ice thickness on most lakes was 6 ft except at Teshekpuk Lake where the ice was 8 ft thick. Three of the nine lakes examined were frozen to the bottom.</p><p>Winter water quality of the lakes and of standing water at stream sites was characterized by higher specific conductivity values than in summer. At three of the five lakes where specific conductance was measured, it was equal to or greater than 700 micromhos per centimeter at 25<strong>°</strong>C; at four of the five rivers where standing water was found, it&nbsp;was more than 400 micromhos per centimeter at 25<strong>°</strong>C.</p><p>Biological sampling was done to identify the widest range of benthic invertebrates likely to be present in a representative reach of a stream. A total of nine spring sites was sampled using drift nets in April 1976. Twenty-one stream sites and one spring were sampled in August 1977 by dip nets. Total numbers of organisms collected using drift net sampling in April 1976 ranged from 0 to 480. Total numbers of organisms collected by dip net sampling in August 1977 ranged from 0 to 776.</p><p>A hydrologic reconnaissance of the eastern Alaskan Arctic Slope was completed in 1975. Principal drainages are Citico Creek and Doublecamp Creek. Rocks of the study area include greenschist-facies arkosic metasandstone, metagraywacke, slate, and metaconglomerate of the Great Smoky Group of late Precambrian age. Minor deposits of unconsolidated Quaternary alluvium locally mantle the bedrock. Deformation is shown by asymmetric and overturned folds and by several major faults.</p><p>More than 500 sample s of soil, rock, and stream sediment were collected and analyzed for 31 major, minor, and trace elements by semiquantitative spectrographic, atomic absorption, and fire assay methods No significant metal anomalies were detected. Concentrations of Cu, Co, As, Pb, and Zn slightly higher than background are found within sulfidic parts of a distinctive stratigraphic unit composed of graphitic slate and metagraywacke. Pyrite and pyrrhotite are the chief sulfide minerals, with traces o f accessory sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena, and arsenopyrite occurring as microscopic intergrowths. A reconnaissance ground radiometric survey and subsequent neutron activation analyses of selected radioactive rock samples show that the sulfidic parts of the graphitic slate unit have a relatively high content of Th and U, but are not potentially economic.</p><p>No metallic mineral resources appear to exist within the Citico Creek Wilderness Study Area. Resources of slate, silica, and stone are present, but they display no special qualities to differentiate them from other such material throughout the region. Ceramic evaluation tests on selected samples of slate indicate that the slate would have only marginal use for structural clay products such as brick and tile. Minor sand and gravel deposits occur along a few streams but are present in larger quantities and are more easily recovered in other areas.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The most permeable of the geologic units is the alluvium that occurs at low elevations along the John Day River and most of the smaller streams. Wells in the alluvial deposits can be expected to yield adequate water supplies for recreational areas; also, wells completed in the underlying bedrock at depths ranging from 50 to 200 feet could yield as much as 10 gallons per minute. Pumping tests on two unused wells indicated yields of 8 gallons per minute and 2 gallons per minute. Nine of the ten springs measured in and near the monument area in late August of 1978 were flowing 0.2 to 30 gallons per minute. Only the Cant Ranch spring and the Johnny Kirk Spring near the Sheep Rock unit had flows exceeding 6 gallons per minute. Chemical analyses of selected constituents of the ground water indicated generally low concentrations of dissolved minerals. Although cloudbursts in the Painted Hills unit could generate a flood wave on the valley floors, flood danger can be reduced by locating recreational sites on high ground. The campground in Indian Canyon of the Clarno unit is vulnerable to cloudburst flooding. About 80 percent of the proposed campground on the John Day River in the Sheep Rock unit is above the estimated level of 1-percent chance flood (100-year flood) of the river. The 1-percent chance flood would extend about 120 feet from the riverbank into the upstream end of the campground. The objective of this study was to establish baseline concentrations and provide data for the \"natural variability\" curve for the mid-Atlantic region.</p><p>Concentration levels (<span>μ</span>g/g) have been determined for the total lipids recovered by liquid column chromatography, and hexane-soluble fraction (aliphatics) benzene fraction (aromatics) as resolved by gas chromatography for each composite sediment sample. Several geochemical parameter values were also determined among which were: 1) n-alkane odd-even ratio; 2) isoprenoid alkane/ n-alkane ratio; 3) pristine/phytane ratio; 4) pristane/n-C<sub>17</sub> ratio; and 5) phytane/n-C<sub>18</sub> ratio. Summary analyses of the concentrations and geochemical 18 parameters are included in this report.</p><p>Surface sediments examined from the mid-Atlantic shelf contained very low concentrations of resolved aliphatic hydrocarbons, less than 5.0 <span>μ</span>g/gm sediment, and very low concentrations of resolved aromatic hydrocarbons, usually less than 1.0 <span>μ</span>g/gm sediment. Mass spectral analyses of selected hexane eluates confirmed the presence of a series of normal aliphatic alkanes ranging from to n-C<sub>16</sub> to n-C<sub>31</sub> as well as the isoprenoids pristane and phytane. A series of three hydrocarbon peaks in the n-C<sub>20</sub> to n-C<sub>21</sub> range were tentatively identified as n-C<sub>25</sub>unsaturated, branched homologs, The aromatic fractions contained a number of polynuclear aromatics including phenanthrenes, methylphenanthrenes, fluoranthene and pyrcne, benzofluoranthene, and alkyl benzenes.</p><p>Data accumulated in the second year of the program, coupled with data from the first year's investigations (Miller et al., 1977), have provided the basis for establishing a preliminary natural. \"variability curve\" for the hydrocarbon concentration levels and distribution in these selected mid-Atlantic shelf samples. Considering the increased agricultural development of the area, this report documents the chemical character of the ground water prior to water-level declines that could result from extensive pumping for irrigation or to changes caused by extensive use of imported surface water. Chemical analyses of samples from 222 wells show that most of the area is underlain by ground water of a quality suitable for most agricultural and domestic purposes. Ninety-five percent of the water sampled has dissolved-solids concentrations of less than 700 milligrams per liter. The general water type for the area is a calcium and magnesium bicarbonate water and there are negligible amounts of toxic trace elements. The potential for water-quality problems exists in the area south of Yuba City along the west bank of the Feather River. There, concentrations of chloride, sulfate, and dissolved solids are higher than in other parts of the area, and they could limit future agricultural activities if chloride- and sulfate-sensitive crops are grown. Because the area is within or near the artillery ranges of the U.S. Army, the existing water resources of the study area are almost undeveloped.</p><p>The only surface-water bodies of significance in the study area are Muck Creek, Nisqually Lake, and springs. The flow of Muck Creek as measured at a gaging station at Roy, east of the study area, ranged from no flow to a maximum discharge of 692 cubic feet per second during the period 1956-77. No flow occurred there about 9 percent of the time during the period 19.56-71. A large spring discharged from 0.12 to 4.56 cubic feet per second during the study period.</p><p>Development or diversion of Muck Creek near its mouth would provide sufficient water for a small- to medium-sized fish-rearing facility. The highest water temperature recorded at this site during the study was 14.0°C, in August 1977, with a stream discharge of 7.12 cubic feet per second.</p><p>Nisqually Lake, with a surface area of about 89 acres, is shallow with a flat bottom. The existing lake water is relatively high with dissolved solids, organic nitrogen and phosphorus, and biologically productive. Species of warm-water fish are probably best suited for the lake.</p><p>Ground water beneath the study area occurs in unconsolidated glacial drift or outwash of gravel, sand, silt, and clay. One of the permeable rock units is the Steilacoom Gravel of Pleistocene age. Yields to wells from this material in a nearby area are from 100 to 250 gallons per minute. Sulfide minerals include pyrite, sphalerite, galena, and minor chalcopyrite, and galena-rich samples contain substantial amounts of silver. These minerals occur in a quartz-carbonate gangue along northeast-trending faults and fractures that exhibit (left?) lateral and vertical slip. The sense of fault movement and the northeasterly strike are consistent with predicted conjugate fault sets of the present San Andreas fault system. The sulfide mineralization is younger than the Franciscan rocks of Point Delgada and King Range, and it may have accompanied or postdated the inception of San Andreas faulting. Mineralization largely preceded uplift, the formation of a marine terrace, and the emplacement of landslide-related debris-flow breccias that overlie the mineralized rocks and truncate the sulfide veins. These field relations indicate that the sulfide mineralization and inception of San Andreas faulting were clearly more recent than the early Miocene and that the mineralization could be younger than about 1.2 m.y. \r\n\r\nThe sulfide veins at Point Delgada may be of economic significance. The gaged watersheds have impervious areas that range from 19 percent for a residential watershed in north Tampa to nearly 100 percent for a downtown Tampa watershed. Land-use types, including roads, residential, commercial, industrial, institutional, recreational , and open space, have been determined for each watershed. Rainfall and storm runoff data collected since 1971 for one site and since 1975 for six other sites through September 1976, have been processed. These data are recorded at 5-minute intervals and are stored in the U. S. Geological Survey WATSTORE unit values file. Daily rainfall at 12 sites and daily pan evaporation at one site have been stored in the WATSTORE daily values file. Chemical and biological analyses of storm runoff for six sites, base flow for seven sites, and analyses of bottom material for seven sites are also stored in the WATSTORE water-quality files. Rainfall and storm runoff for selected storms, daily rainfall, and daily pan-evaporation data are summarized in this report. Water-quality analyses of all water-quality samples also are listed. It was preceded by 61 foreshocks that began on June 7, 1975, and was followed by thousands of aftershocks. Several studies have reported locations or analyses of various subsets of the Oroville sequence, including Morrison and others (1975), Savage and others (1975), Lester and others (1975), Toppozada and others (1975), Ryall and others (1975), Bufe and others (1976), Morrison and others (1976), and Lahr and others (1976). In this report arrival time data have been compiled from the original records at several institutions to produce a single catalog of the Oroville sequence from June 7, 1975, through July 31, 1976. Paleozoic rocks in the area consist mostly of beds of sandstone, shale, and limestone which dip about 30 feet per mile to the southwest. The potentiometric surface of the Paleozoic aquifer slopes generally to the west away from the area of outcrop and is strongly influenced by large ground-water withdrawals at Corinth. The water level at Corinth has declined about 140 feet since 1954. Pumping at Corinth has affected water levels in wells more than 10 miles from the center of pumping. Their presence at the surface may indicate migration along fractures in or bordering the diapiric feature and seepage into unconsolidated sediments that are ponded locally within structural and bathymetric depressions.
