Eighteen elements--scandiurn, manganese, iron, zinc, rubidium, cesium, barium, lanthanum, cerium, samarium, europium, terbiurn, dysprosiurn, ytterbiurn, hafniurn, tantalurn, thorium and uranium--were selected as most suitable for purposes of chemical correlation on the basis of their natural variability in silicic tuffs and the precision obtainable in analysis. Stratigraphic relations between tuffs and replicate chemical analyses on individual tuffs make it possib1e to calibrate a quantitative parameter, the similarity coefficient, which indicates the degree of correlation for the tuffs studied. The highest similarity coefficient (0.99) was obtained for analyses of two tuffs (potassium-argon dated at about' 6.0 m.y.) exposed in the Merced(?) and Petaluma Formations of Sonoma County, which represent different paleoenvironments, shallow-water marine and fresh water or brackish marine, respectively. Corre1ation of these formations on the basis of criteria other than tephrochronoloqy would be difficult. Results of neutron activation analysis in general confirm earlier correlations made on the basis of analysis by X-ray fluorescence but also make it possible to resolve small compositional differences between chemically simi1ar tuffs in stratigraphic proximity. The Lawlor Tuff (potassium-argon dated at about 4.0 m.y.) is identified at two new localities: in a core sample obtained from a bore hole east of Suisun Bay, and from the Kettleman Hills of western San Joaquin Valley. This identification permits correlation of the uppermost part of the marine Etchegoin Formation in the San Joaquin Valley with the continental Livermore Gravels of Clark, the Tassajara Formation, and the upper part of the Sonoma Volcanics in the cel1tral Coast Ranges of California. A younger tuff near the top of the marine San Joaquin Formation in the Kettleman Hills has been identified at both new 1oca1ities .","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"for sale by the Supt. of Docs., U.S. Govt. These data include areal flood-frequency relations and flood heights for the 2-, 2.33-, 5-, 10-, 25-, 50- , 100-, 200-, and 500-year recurrence intervals. Flood profiles are provided for the 2.33-, 5-, 10-, 100-, and 500-year recurrence intervals. Study results indicate that flood discharges in the study area are highly variable and are one-third to one-half of regional estimates. Differences between study area and regional estimates are due to large quantities of flood-water drainage to the regional aquifer system in the upper basin, a large karst area of about 138 square miles. Graded roads and bridges located at three sites along the upper study reach will be inundated by various frequency floods. In this investigation seawater was detected in the Guayanilla-Yauco and Tallaboa areas.</p><p>Since 1968, water level and quality-of-water data have been collected from selected wells in the south coastal areas between Guanica and Patillas. The 1968-77 study indicated two additional areas of possible seawater intrusion in the Ponce-Santa Isabel area. This report complements the previous reports by providing new petrographic and geochemical data for samples from St. Paul and St. George Islands and from two dredge hauls near St. George Island (Fig. 1).</p><p>The geologic setting of the Pribilof Islands region is given by Barth (1956), Hopkins and Einarsson (1965), Cox and others (1966), Hopkins and others (1969), Marlow and others (1976), and Hopkins and Silberman (1978). Quaternary basalt (Table 1) (Cox and others, 1966; Hopkins, 1976; Simpson and others, 1979) is extruded onto the structurally high Pribilof Ridge (Marlow and others, 1976) which consists of rocks as old as late Jurassic (Vallier and others, 1979). Barth (1956) recognized the structural implication of alkalic volcanism in back-arc environments. We plan to interpret alkalic volcanism in the Pribilof Islands within the context of recent tectonic and petrologic findings in the southern Bering Sea.</p><p>Funds for this project were provided jointly by the U.S. Geological Survey and Bureau of Land Management. Certain, mainly statistical, reports such as the annual Minerals Yearbook of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the biennial and annual reports of the State of Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys and its predecessor State and Territorial agencies are not included. Also not included are data on many claims about which little more than their locations is known (for example, MacKevett and Holloway, 1977 (0F77-169A), p. 8-10). It extends across the boundary between, and includes parts of, the Piedmont and Atlantic Coastal Plain physiographic provinces. The rocks in the Piedmont are mainly intensely folded sericite schist and granite gneiss containing irregular masses of amphibolite and feldspathic biotite gneiss and scattered igneous intrusive rocks. Most of the crystalline rocks are thought to be of Paleozoic age, but some of the intrusive rocks may be younger. The crystalline rocks are cut by a major unconformity and are overlain by sedimentary formations ranging in age from Cretaceous to Miocene. The valuable kaolin deposits occur in the Cretaceous beds, undivided, and in the Huber Formation which is of Paleocene to middle Eocene age. The resources of kaolin in the district are estimated in millions of metric tons as follows: reserves, 100; subeconomic resources, 700 to 900; undiscovered resources, probably 700 to 1,000. \r\n\r\nIn addition to kaolin, the leading mineral commodity mined in the district, crushed stone and sand are now being produced, and fuller's earth and a minor amount of limestone were formerly produced. The crushed stone is quarried from igneous rocks in the Piedmont province. The sand is washed from the Cretaceous beds, undivided. First, recovery of material from depth will permit determination of the composition and constitutive properties of both solid and fluid phases. Second, it will enable measurements of the physical state of the fault zone to be made (that is, the state of in-situ stress, pore pressure, and temperature). Finally, it will allow emplacement of instruments at depth in the fault zone as part of experiments related to earthquake prediction.</p><p>This report briefly describes the drilling history and preliminary analysis of fault zone materials from site Dry Lake Valley (DLV) No. 1 (Fig. 1). The site is located at Lat. 36028.09'N, Long. 12103.32'W. This site was chosen in an attempt to drill a 1 km deep well that would reach earthquake foci. Although the entire central section of the San Andreas fault is characterized by moderate seismicity and aseismic creep, Dry Lake Valley has particularly shallow earthquakes as well as a fairly high creep rate (18-20 mm/year, S. Schultz, pers. comm.). Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section along the San Andreas fault showing high precision locations of magnitude one or greater earthquakes that occurred in 1973-1975 (from W. Ellsworth, per. comm.). The depth accuracy of the earthquakes shown is about <span>±</span> 0.5 km, and it is obvious from Figure 2 that Dry Lake Valley earthquakes are extremely shallow.</p><p>As shown in Figure 1 the general geology of the central section of the San Andreas fault consists of Tertiary to Jurassic sedimentary and volcanic rocks overlying Cretaceous age Gabilan granite of the Salinian Block on the west side of the fault and Cretaceous-Jurassic sedimentary assemblages of the Franciscan Complex to the east of the fault. Dibblee (1979) summarizes the geology along the central San Andreas fault. At the Dry Lake Valley site as much as 2 km of Pliocene-Miocene marine sediments (Etchegoin and Santa Margarita formation) overlie Franciscan rocks on the northeast side of the San Andreas fault.
