Phytoplankton concentrations in cells per milliliter (cells/mL) were generally higher downstream from Atlanta than upstream. The highest concentrations, mostly blue-green algae, occurred in West Point Lake with an average of 90,000 cells/mL for the sampling period. The lowest concentrations, 1,000 cells/mL, occurred upstream of Lake Sidney Lanier. Dissolved orthophosphate and nitrite plus nitrate concentrations were highest in the river reaches and upper reaches of the two lakes and were lowest at the dam pools of both lakes. The high nitrite plus nitrate concentrations downstream from Atlanta were primarily a result of nitrification by Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter bacteria. Algal growth potential was highest downstream from Atlanta, 25 milligrams per liter (mg/L) at Whitesburg, and was the lowest in the headwaters and at the dam pools of Lake Sidney Lanier and West Point Lake. The rate of nitrification in the Atlanta to Franklin reach of the river was comparatively low, 0.02 mg/L per hour. Nitrification was an important cause of dissolved-oxygen consumption in a 45-mi reach of the river downstream from the Atlanta wastewater treatment facilities. Dissolved-oxygen consumption as a result of nitrification may be greatest during low flow. Well-log data and 18 surface-resistivity measurements at four localities indicate that the thickness of the alluvial aquifer is as much as 60 feet thick only near Burlington and Otto. The most favorable area for development of ground water from the alluvial aquifer is near Burlington and Otto where relatively large amounts of water can be obtained from the Greybull terrace deposits and the flood-plain alluvium. For the equation Q = aWAb, where Q is mean discharge and WA is active-channel width, it is proposed that the exponent, b, should be of fixed value for most natural, perennial, alluvial stream channels and that the coefficient, a, varies with the characteristics of the bed and bank material.</p><p>Three groups of perennial stream channels with differing characteristics were selected for study using consistent procedures of data collection. A common feature of the groups was general channel stability, that is, absence of excessive widening by erosive discharges. Group 1 consisted of 32 channels of gradient exceeding 0.0080, low suspended-sediment discharge, high channel roughness, and low discharge variability. Group 2 consisted of 13 streams in Kansas having at least 70 percent silt and clay in the bed material and having similar discharge variability, climate, gradient, and riparian vegetation. Group 3, in southern Missouri, consisted of discharge channels of 18 springs having similar conditions of very low discharge variability, climate and vegetation, but variable bed and bank material. Values for the exponent for the three groups of data are 1.98, 1.97, and 1.97, respectively, whereas values of the coefficients are 0.017, 0.042, and 0.011 when discharge is expressed in cubic meters per second and width is in meters. The relation for high-gradient channels (group 1) is supported by published data from laboratory flumes.</p><p>The similarity of the three values of the exponent demonstrates that a standard exponent of 2.0, significant to two figures, is reasonable for the width-mean discharge relation of perennial, alluvial stream channels, and that the exponent is independent of other variables. Using a fixed exponent of 2.0, a family of simple power-function equations was developed expressing the manner in which channel sediment affects the width-discharge relation.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7915","usgsCitation":"Osterkamp, W.R., 1979, Variation of alluvial-channel width with discharge and character of sediment: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 79-15, iv, 11 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7915.","productDescription":"iv, 11 p.","numberOfPages":"19","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":158359,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1979/0015/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":349806,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1979/0015/report.pdf"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49a0e4b07f02db5bd7d0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Osterkamp, W. Rocks of the study area are greenschist-facies metasandstone, meta-arkose, metagraywacke, and dark slate of the Ocoee Supergroup of late Precambrian age. A major thrust fault, correlated with the Greenbrier Fault, separates fine-grained slaty rocks of the Snowbird Group on the northwest side, from coarse clastic sediments and interbedded slates of the Great Smoky Group on the southeast. North- and northeast-trending folds are common in the map area. Minor deposits of Quaternary sand and gravel occur locally in the lower parts of large streams.</p><p>Semiquantitative spectrographic, atomic absorption, and selected fire assay analyses were done on more than 200 samples of rock, soil, and stream sediment. No significant metal anomalies were found for 31 major, minor, and trace elements. In many places, metasiltstone and metasandstone contain trace amounts of chalcopyrite and sphalerite as microscopic intergrowths with the chief sulfide minerals, pyrite and pyrrhotite. Sulfides make up as much as 5 to 10 percent of some rocks and provide concentrations of Cu, Zn, and As slightly higher than background in samples of rock and soil. Rocks containing these disseminated base-metal sulfides are of insufficient grade to have current economic potential, however.</p><p>No metallic mineral resources are known within the proposed Big Frog Wilderness. Nonmetallic resources, including slate and&nbsp; phyllite, stone, and sand and gravel are present locally, but are not presently a value because similar resources exist closer to markets outside the study area. These deposits therefore would have only marginal use in the region.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr791209","usgsCitation":"Slack, J.F., Gazdik, G.C., and Dunn, M., 1979, Mineral resources of the Big Frog Wilderness Study Area, Polk County, Tennessee and Fannin County, Georgia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1209, iv, 39 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791209.","productDescription":"iv, 39 p.","costCenters":[{"id":245,"text":"Eastern Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":144688,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1209/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":422792,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1209/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Georgia, Tennessee","county":"Fannin County, Polk County","otherGeospatial":"Big Frog Wilderness Study Area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -84.5580,\n              34.9830\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.4850,\n              34.9830\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.4850,\n              35.058104573869024\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.5580,\n              35.058104573869024\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.5580,\n              34.9830\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b08e4b07f02db69b2f5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Slack, John F. 0000-0001-6600-3130 jfslack@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6600-3130","contributorId":1032,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Slack","given":"John","email":"jfslack@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[{"id":245,"text":"Eastern Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":243,"text":"Eastern Geology and Paleoclimate Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":387,"text":"Mineral Resources Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":162697,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Gazdik, Gertrude C.","contributorId":56220,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gazdik","given":"Gertrude","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162699,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Dunn, Maynard L.","contributorId":40225,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dunn","given":"Maynard L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162698,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The quadrangle is dominantly a complex terrane of greenschist- to amphibolitefacies metamorphic rocks that have been intruded by Mesozoic and Tertiary dioritic to granitic rocks and are overlain by Tertiary sedimentary and volcanic rocks. Serpentinized peridotite and associated greenstone, graywacke, and chert crop out in some places. \r\n\r\nThe quadrangle is bisected by the northeastward-trending Shaw Creek fault, which, on the basis of aeromagnetic interpretation and geologic data, is postulated to have left-lateral offset of as much as 48 km. On the northwest side of the Shaw Creek fault, metamorphic rock units have a northwesterly regional trend, and the oldest rocks could be Precambrian in age. Gneiss and schist in the southwestern part of the quadrangle are derived from both igneous and sedimentary protoliths, some of which may be as old as Precambrian. Other rock units, which include calcareous schist and thin-layered marble, black quartzite, semischist, and cataclastic rocks, are considered to be of probable Paleozoic age, although no fossils have yet been found in these rocks. Radiolarians and conodonts in chert associated with greenstone and ultramafic rocks indicate that the chert is of Permian age. \r\n\r\nPotassium-argon ages on igneous rocks of the Big Delta quadrangle fall into two groups: those with biotite, muscovite, hornblende, and sanidine ages between 50 to 69 m.y.; and those with biotite, hornblende, and sanidine ages between 88 to 105 m.y. The younger of these two groups appears to indicate the time of a plutonic event marked by intrusion of mostly small, isolated plutons, including hypabyssal stocks, and the eruption of silicic volcanic rocks. Most of the plutons are quartz monzonite to granite. \r\n\r\nThe older group of ages (88 to 105 m.y.) on igneous rocks includes ages on the largest plutons of the Yukono-Tanana Upland. The rocks range from diorite to quartz monzonite in composition. The potassium-argon ages on the metamorphic rocks of the Big Delta quadrangle, like those obtained elsewhere in the Yukon-Tanana Upland, appear to have been partly or completely reset by subsequent thermal events. \r\n\r\nVein and placer gold deposits have been mined in the Big Delta quadrangle, and although indications of mineralization are widespread, no other mineral deposits have yet been identified. The geologic, geochemical, and geophysical data are compatible with several types of deposits, including porphyry copper, massive sulfide, and skarn deposits. In certain aspects, the geology of the quadrangle is similar to areas in the eastern part of the Yukon-Tanana Upland and Canada where mineral deposits are known.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/cir783","usgsCitation":"Foster, H.L., Albert, N.R., Griscom, A., Hessin, T., Menzie, W., Turner, D.L., and Wilson, F.H., 1979, The Alaskan Mineral Resource Assessment Program: Background information to accompany folio of geologic and mineral resource maps of the Big Delta quadrangle, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 783, iii, 19 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir783.","productDescription":"iii, 19 p.","costCenters":[{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":31342,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1979/0783/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":139243,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1979/0783/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":391117,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_23992.htm"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Big Delta quadrangle","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -147,\n              64\n            ],\n            [\n              -144,\n              64\n            ],\n            [\n              -144,\n              65\n            ],\n            [\n              -147,\n              65\n            ],\n            [\n              -147,\n              64\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b06e4b07f02db69a276","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Foster, Helen Laura","contributorId":21936,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Foster","given":"Helen","email":"","middleInitial":"Laura","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":148472,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Albert, N. The quadrangle is underlain chiefly by Precambrian layered metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks that are intruded by plutons ranging in composition from gabbroic to granitic. The metasedimentary rocks include quartzite, phyllitic quartzite, phyllite, slate, argillite, granulite, schist, and marble. The metavolcanic rocks are mostly greenstone and greenstone tuff but include meta-andesite and metadacite. The rocks are in the greenschist and greenschist-amphibolite transition facies. \r\n\r\nThe major plutonic rocks are tonalite and quartz diorite, which form a large batholith in the western part of the quadrangle. Smaller bodies of diorite and gabbro, granite, and complexes of mixed rocks are also present. \r\n\r\nThe layered rocks are divided into sixunits that have been described in outcrop order, from east to west: 1) nearly all greenstone, 2) mixed metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks, 3) nearly all metasedimentary rocks, 4) greenstone in eastern part, metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks in western part, 5) nearly all metasedimentary rocks, and 6) metavolcanic rocks containing subordinate amounts of metasedimentary rocks. \r\n\r\nThe layered rocks have a northerly strike throughout the quadrangle except near the southwest corner where they strike northwest. The rocks are steeply dipping to vertical. Major deformation has produced isoclinal folds and shears, strike faults, and subordinate cross faults. A second stage of deformation resulted in local open folds. \r\n\r\nBasalt of Quaternary age covers the Precambrian rocks near the eastern margin of the quadrangle, and alluvium underlies major wadis and flats. \r\n\r\nThe main part of the Wadi Bidah mining district, including at least four ancient mining sites, is in the southeast part of the quadrangle. The district has produced gold from gold-quartz veins, and has some potential for producing, gold, silver, copper, zinc, and lead from massive sulfide deposits.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr791353","usgsCitation":"Greene, R.C., and Gonzalez, L., 1979, Reconnaissance geology of the Wadi Shuqub Quadrangle, sheet 20/41 A, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1353, ii, 34 p. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791353.","productDescription":"ii, 34 p. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141753,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1353/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36867,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1353/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36868,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1353/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36869,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1353/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b06e4b07f02db69a18b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Greene, Robert C.","contributorId":36108,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Greene","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159320,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Gonzalez, Louis","contributorId":36936,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gonzalez","given":"Louis","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159321,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
