This program was initiated to delineate and assess geologic hazards that could be particularly detrimental to major constructions, especially nuclear reactors. Faults are of principal interest to the program because earthquakes associated with them can cause major damage in short periods of time.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Prior to 1970, very little was known about Cenozoic faulting in the eastern United States. the most abundant data were available in the western gulf Coastal Plain where oil exploration had generated a considerable amount of subsurface stratigraphic information. The Atlantic coastal Plain was considered to be generally devoid of faults, although scientists such as McGee (1888) and Darton (1891, 1951) had proposed major faulting or uplift along the Fall Line. The Piedmont and Blue Ridge Provinces of the eastern United States contained numerous mapped faults, abut the recency of fault movement was unknown because of the absence of Cenozoic strata.</p>\n<p>One of the initial efforts of the Reactor Hazards Program was a compilation and evaluation of Cretaceous and younger faults in the East. Topical studies were initiated in areas of particular interest, and these studies in turn generated a broader scientific interest in the problem of Cenozoic deformation. A preliminary literature investigation of Cretaceous and younger faulting was published by York and Oliver (1976), and was followed by an interpretive map of young faults by Howard and others (1978).</p>\n<p>The data in this report represent the presently available knowledge of fault characteristics and distribution. Clearly, as current investigations progress and as geologists become more aware of the evidence for Cenozoic faulting, the number of known Cenozoic faults will increase substantially. Until such time, the data that are shown here must be viewed conservatively because I believe they are not a totally representative collection of information at this scale. the data are useful in characterizing basic fault patterns in the region, but certain factors limit the usefulness of the map. Limitations of this information are discussed in the following text, and the reader should give them major consideration when using the map and fault table.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/mf1269","usgsCitation":"Prowell, D.C., 1983, Index of faults of Cretaceous and Cenozoic age in the eastern United States: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1269, 2 Plates: 33.97 x 47.57 inches and 46.18 x 37.79 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1269.","productDescription":"2 Plates: 33.97 x 47.57 inches and 46.18 x 37.79 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":179879,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf1269.PNG"},{"id":327432,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1269/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":327431,"rank":1,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1269/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -73.388671875,\n              45.02695045318546\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.279296875,\n              45.1510532655634\n            ],\n            [\n              -69.9169921875,\n              43.03677585761058\n            ],\n            [\n              -69.9609375,\n              42.42345651793833\n            ],\n            [\n              -69.60937499999999,\n              41.64007838467894\n            ],\n            [\n              -69.9609375,\n              40.91351257612758\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.89453125,\n              40.58058466412764\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.564453125,\n              39.774769485295465\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.0146484375,\n              37.75334401310656\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.498046875,\n              36.24427318493909\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.322265625,\n              34.92197103616377\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.3876953125,\n              34.016241889667015\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.0576171875,\n              32.80574473290688\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.2880859375,\n              31.989441837922904\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.298828125,\n              30.751277776257812\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.6064453125,\n              29.76437737516313\n            ],\n            [\n              -83.232421875,\n              29.38217507514529\n            ],\n            [\n              -85.341796875,\n              29.305561325527698\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.62695312499999,\n              29.305561325527698\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.72558593749999,\n              29.305561325527698\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.12109375,\n              29.267232865200878\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.791015625,\n              29.34387539941801\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.263671875,\n              31.203404950917395\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.12109375,\n              34.161818161230386\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.6708984375,\n              35.31736632923788\n            ],\n            [\n              -85.078125,\n              37.16031654673677\n            ],\n            [\n              -83.408203125,\n              38.89103282648846\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.2880859375,\n              40.51379915504413\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.40917968749999,\n              42.16340342422401\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.95898437499999,\n              43.004647127794435\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.4541015625,\n              44.49650533109348\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.388671875,\n              45.02695045318546\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49fae4b07f02db5f4300","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Prowell, David C.","contributorId":46956,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Prowell","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":264125,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Except for these two areas of identified and suspected resources, we did not observe indications of resource potential elsewhere in the Raywood Flat Roadless Areas.</p>\n<p>The area having nonmetallic mineral resources is in the vicinity of the Mill Creek mine near the northeastern boundary of the further planning area (B5-187); there, we identified marginal reserves of marble suitable for the production of lime and construction stone. The reserves are marginal because of their remote location and poor accessibility. Geologic mapping did not reveal any additional marble occurrences within the study area.</p>\n<p>The area having moderate potential for base-metal resources forms a small zone in the eastern part of the recommended wilderness (A5-187). Within this zone, evidence provided by stream-sediment geochemistry suggests that crystalline bedrocks in several drainages contain concentrations of metallic elements. Because the terrain is inaccessible and covered with dense brush, most of the bedrock in the specific drainages containing the geochemical anomalies could not be examined. Thus, although we infer that mineral occurrences exist in the drainage basins, we have little data on which to base an estimate of their extent and quality. Locally, the crystalline rocks probably contain hydrothermal veins or disseminated occurrences where lead, copper, molybdenum, tin, cobalt, bismuth, and arsenic have been concentrated. However, the geochemical anomalies for these metals are small, and the stream drainages also are relatively small. Therefore, the inferred occurrences of metallic minerals probably are small scale, scattered, and low grade. There is only low probability that the inferred mineral occurrences are large scale.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/mf1563A","usgsCitation":"Matti, J.C., Cox, B.F., and Iverson, S.R., 1983, Mineral resource potential map of the Raywood Flat Roadless Areas, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, California: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1563, Report: 11 p.; Plate: 39.43 x 34.88 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1563A.","productDescription":"Report: 11 p.; Plate: 39.43 x 34.88 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":310531,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1563-A/report.pdf","text":"Report","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":310532,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1563-A/plate-1.pdf","text":"Plate","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":183122,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf1563A.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Riverside County, San Bernardino County","otherGeospatial":"Raywood Flat Roadless Area","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -117,33.916666666666664 ], [ -117,34.166666666666664 ], [ -116.58333333333333,34.166666666666664 ], [ -116.58333333333333,33.916666666666664 ], [ -117,33.916666666666664 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b28e4b07f02db6b15b3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Matti, Jonathan C. jmatti@usgs.gov","contributorId":3666,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Matti","given":"Jonathan","email":"jmatti@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":263353,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Cox, Brett F. bcox@usgs.gov","contributorId":5793,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cox","given":"Brett","email":"bcox@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":263354,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Iverson, Stephen R.","contributorId":73335,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Iverson","given":"Stephen","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":263352,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The region has a low potential for oil and gas and virtually no potential for other valuable minerals. The phosphate deposits are either slightly low in tonnage and P<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub> content, high in MgO and/or Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> + Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>, or the ratio of CaO to P<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub> is too high for deposits that can be mined profitably at the present time. A low potential for oil and gas is indicated by the numerous dry holes in the region and the absence of the formations that contain these hydrocarbons in southern and westernmost Florida. The only mineral material that has been produced in the study area is clayey sand, used in stabilizing Forest Service roads. This type of clayey sand has no particular value because there are virtually unlimited quantities in the surrounding region. The peaty material in the area is too high in ash content to be mined. Large quantities of limestone underlie the area but are too deeply buried to be quarried. Heavy-mineral and clay deposits, which are mined elsewhere in northern peninsular Florida, are not present in the study area.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/mf1572B","usgsCitation":"Cathcart, J.B., Patterson, S.H., and Crandall, T.M., 1983, Mineral resource potential map of the Natural Area Roadless Area, Baker County, Florida: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1572, Report: 16 p.; Plate: 50.96 x 32.49 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1572B.","productDescription":"Report: 16 p.; Plate: 50.96 x 32.49 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":183672,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf1572B.jpg"},{"id":310527,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1572-B/report.pdf","text":"Report","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":310528,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1572-B/plate-1.pdf","text":"Plate","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","county":"Baker County","otherGeospatial":"Natural Area Roadless Area, Osceola National Forest","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -82.41666666666667,30.333333333333332 ], [ -82.41666666666667,30.416666666666668 ], [ -82.33333333333333,30.416666666666668 ], [ -82.33333333333333,30.333333333333332 ], [ -82.41666666666667,30.333333333333332 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b23e4b07f02db6ae011","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cathcart, James B.","contributorId":51201,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cathcart","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":261441,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Patterson, Sam H.","contributorId":62996,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Patterson","given":"Sam","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":261442,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Crandall, Thomas M.","contributorId":56794,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Crandall","given":"Thomas","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":261440,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Summary descriptions of individual lode gold deposits and districts which include those occurrences in the&nbsp;Medford&nbsp;1<sup>o</sup>&nbsp;x 2<sup>o</sup>&nbsp;quadrangle have been published by Brooks and Ramp (1968) and Hotz (1971) and by others cited in the reference lists in these two publications. As part of the Medford CUSMAP project between 1974 and 1980, some of these deposits were examined in the field during geologic mapping and geochemical sampling and most of the available information on individual deposits was compiled into a CRIB computer file (Computerized Resource Information Bank). This report is a summary of the more pertinent geologic and economic characteristics of the lode gold deposits for use in the resource evaluation part of the Medford CUSMAP project. &nbsp;This data file has been recompiled and updated through 1980. &nbsp;Some revisions of epicenters and intensities in the original file have been made, and intensities have been assigned to earthquakes that previouly had none assigned. &nbsp;Only earthquakes that had epicenters within the boundary of the State are listed in table 2, even though earthquakes that had epicenters in bordering states or countries may have been felt or may have caused damage in the State. &nbsp;Intensity values were updated from data sources that were not available at the time of original compilation. &nbsp;Some epicenters were relocated on the basis of new information. &nbsp;The data shown in table 1 represent best estimates of the epicenter, magnitude, and intensity of each earthquake on the basis of historical and current informaiton. &nbsp;Some of the aftershocks from large earthquakes are listed, but not all, especially for the earthquakes that occurred before seismic instruments were universally used.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/mf1346","usgsCitation":"Reagor, B., Stover, C.W., and On several occasions their instability has resulted in serious damage. For example, the 1868 earthquake (m=7+), following a prolonged rainy period, caused a debris flow of hillside ash deposits that killed 31 people in Wood Valley (Bringham, 1869). The 1973 Honomu earthquake (m=6.2) resulted in more damage from shaking to areas underlain by ash deposits in the older part of Hilo than in other areas, and soil slips in ash, as well as rockfalls, were common along the roads north of town (Nielsen and others, 1977).&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Three geologic units are represented on the accompanying map: the ash deposits, a clay bed that locally underlies the ash, and the bedrock material.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/mf1499","usgsCitation":"Buchanan-Banks, J.M., 1983, Reconnaissance map showing thickness of volcanic ash deposits in the greater Hilo area, Hawaii: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1499, 28.40 x 28.25 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1499.","productDescription":"28.40 x 28.25 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":183148,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf1499.PNG"},{"id":327165,"rank":1,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1499/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"24000","country":"United States","state":"Hawai'i","city":"Hilo","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -155.16666666666666,19.700833333333332 ], [ -155.16666666666666,19.784166666666668 ], [ -155.08333333333334,19.784166666666668 ], [ -155.08333333333334,19.700833333333332 ], [ -155.16666666666666,19.700833333333332 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a6ce4b07f02db63e88d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Buchanan-Banks, Jane M.","contributorId":29421,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Buchanan-Banks","given":"Jane","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":261304,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The purpose of this report is to release a preferred set of correlations based upon marine mollusk biostratigraphy. The senior author, with the help of B. E. Law, has acquired, synthesized, compiled, and interpreted data from various sources. These include selected published documents (see \"References Cited\") and unpublished reports of fossil identifications by W. A. Cobban who examined collections made by the late J. R. Gill. Numerous measured sections of Gill's were also utilized. It must be emphasized that all interpretations on this chart are based on information obtained from these sources and the senior author has yet to substantiate these correlations in the field. Not all data from the area of this study is included herein because it is either repetitive in nature or its reliability is uncertain. This uncertainty is due to the ambiguity inherent in both fossil identification and stratigraphic interpretation. Questionable unpublished material has been omitted while published data which is inconsistent with the senior author's correlations may be found in the footnotes portion of this report. The rock units are assigned to a range of ammonites that have been related to an absolute time scale. The ammonite zonation and age boundaries are adapted from Obradovich and Cobban (1975). \"D\" numbers are provided for each geographic locality where fossils were collected and described by personnel of the U.S. Geological Survey.
